Global PokédeX Plus Forums _ Member-hosted Contests _ Mismagius contest!

Posted by: Boblitt Aug 12 2011, 01:35 PM

Okay, so here's the deal. I really love Mismagiuses and I'd love to see art of them!
It might take me a while to respond to your entries and comments though, because pretty soon I'll be leaving for ~2 weeks.

Rules:
1. Submission has to be related to Mismagius (well, obviously).
2. Submission may also be literate, drawn, composed or otherwise! For example, plushies and stories are accepted, as well as sprite edits and fandubs.
3. Don't flame other people and their work, or groan if you don't win. That's rude.
4. Don't you dare steal work. I will personally come over and slap you.
5. Try and submit your entry before 14 September (the deadline has been extended by two days).
6. I am the judge.

Prizes:
First place - A feature in my signature for three months, a traditional or digital drawing of your choice and input.
Second place - A feature in my signature for three months, a traditional drawing of a single pokémon or character.
Third place - A feature in my signature for three months, a doodle of a pokémon of your choice.
There might also be originality awards or such, if enough entries. We'll see how it goes.

Entries:
1. CBD Beck's entry:
Mismagius gijinka (click to show)

2. Aperture'sentry:
Mismagius banner! (click to show)

3. Not A Moron's entry:
Mismagius gif in MS Paint (click to show)

4. Coordinator Lucy Usagi's entry:
Mismagius sprite edit (click to show)

5. Robin-Anne's entry:

Edit edit edit!: The contest is now officially over and the judging is done right now. Results should be out somewhere tomorrow probably and winners will receive a PM, as well as how they would like to claim their prize.

Could I take a spot please? Unless banners aren't allowed noes.gif

Thanks.

Alright, I have mine done. I'm sorry about the background, but I made this with MSPaint, and 83 frames is a lot to make transparent with iaza.

Mismagius Recoded. Or something. I just thought that sounded cool.

Eeep, I'll put you in the entries!
PS: I used Beneton Movie Gif, which asks to make the colour of the top left pixel (or a specified colour) transparent for the whole frame. Still a pain though, but hey, it's a decent program for freeware.

EDIT: After today I'll be gone for beforementioned ~2 weeks. Just warning!

A'right,I'll get started now.

I shall reserve a spot. As I will be entering something happy.gif Although, I will probably be entering a writing of some sort cat.gif

Posted by: Coordinator Lucy Usagi Aug 19 2011, 03:42 AM

I shall enter! *waves hand*

EDIT:
Mwahahhah! Lo and behold! I decided Mismagius would look better with a Mightyena-based tail, Mightyena ears(both recoloured of course, and the tail needed a little extending), extra markings on the rim of Mismagius's hat and animation.
Though the animating is a little fail.

EDIT 2:
When I said Mightyena ears I spliced them from Mightyena and put them on Mismagius's hat. So they're sort of not ears anymore. Maybe...very short ribbons?

Of course! There's still a week left. Would you like me to reserve a spot for you?

Posted by: Boblitt Sep 10 2011, 03:15 AM

There's only two days left before the ending of the contest, and a lot of people who have reserved a spot haven't handed in their entries yet. I am extending the contest by two days atop of that, in good hope that I'm still getting the entries and so that you guys have a little bit of extra time. It's not much, But I'd also like to get one with some other projects than a forum contest.

I'm also going to send entrants that have no entry yet another naggy PM tomorrow. Woo!

Sorry about the white outline, I'll try to fix that soon.

Silly silly you (you're past the deadline but it doesn't really matter)!
And with that, the contest is closed. Results will be out tomorrow (unless I get a lot of homework) and I will announce them here as well as PMing the winners.

Thanks to all those that participated!

Well, okay, I lied. That took a little longer than a day, didn't it?
I had a bit of trouble going on at school bla bla but it's time for the contest results now!

CDB Beck made a beautiful gijinka, replacing their earlier entry. Mismagius is a Pokémon that already quite looks like a lady with an enormous witch's hat, so I'm pleasantly surprised to see something unexpected! I love how Mismagius' key elements are translated into the gijinka (the colours, tufts, glittery gems, yellow eyes and undying grin), although the design does look a little flat to me. Other than that though, I can't really find any bad points.

Aperture made a lovely banner, which is pretty slick composition-wise. The gradient gives Mismagius its especially spooky look and the background matches its signature colours well. Again, I really can find only one bad point, which would be that the colours in the background look brighter than Mismagius' own colours, making its face stand out less against the background. It's not really a major point, though, and again, I really really love the composition.

Not A Moron did a smoothly animated sprite edit which features Mismagius' outline and the repetition of ones and zeroes. I don't know whether or not it was your intention, but it translates to the repetition of the letter 'a', like one, long scream. I like it. And bonus points for giving it a cool title.

Coordinator Lucy Usagi made an animated sprite edit which features parts from Mightyena! The colouring looks smooth, although Mightyena's ear's look just slightly out of place compared to the tafts Mismagius already had on her hat (it's like one of them is too far to the middle of the hat, if you catch my drift). The animation is indeed not very smooth, but I actually like it overall. It has a nice composition and you found a nice way to upgrade Mismagius' original sprite.

Robin-Anne's entry looks very cute compared to the other entries, being a moe little witch with big eyes and wide clothes. I can't say it looks very good anatomically or shading-wise, but I actually like the clothing design with the reoccurring red jewels. This is a bit of a pointless review as I know this entrant doesn't speak a word of English.

And that's it! I bet you're all very curious as to who won, right?
It was a pretty tough choice, as I really liked all of your works a lot (and they were nearly all in different mediums, so slightly difficult to compare), but I've chosen my picks.

Third place winner is... Coordinator Lucy Usagi!
While the splice was not all kinds of super-smooth, it was particularly nice anyway. Next time, try to keep symmetry and depth a bit more in mind; sizes do matter.

Second place winner is... Not A Moron!
While seemingly simple, their animation looks super-smooth and also has (perhaps unintentional) awesomeness to it. You can also really see that they put effort into it. Transparency would be nice for a next time though!

Bah-dum-tiss! And now it's really becoming tense! Out of the five contestants, there's only three left now, all of which have made lovely works for the contest. And the first-place winner, who made the very best piece is...

Exciting! (click to show)
