I've seen this about a lot, however I am surprised that it isn't here. Or at least if it is, I haven't seen it.
This little topic is something that interest me greatly. QUOTE The average tipper would pay roughly 10% - 25% of the meal, depending on the level and quality of service. Some argue that 15% or 20% is a minimum tip or that it is extremely rude to not leave at least Ł1/$1, even if the service was not up to standard. Personally I believe that it's every right that waiters/waitresses receive tips. Nothing extortionate, mind you. If I feel someone has given me great service; whether that be coming across as friendly, helpful and full of smiles or something. I feel obliged to give them something. Usually I give them a Ł10 tip. Ł10 on average, that is. It sometimes varies between Ł8 - Ł12, depending on the change I have. I understand the argument would be: "it's their job! They don't need tips!!11!" or something like that. That is true, that's their job. However, if you were serving at least 8 people at a time, don't you think they deserve something? After all it's not easy tending to roughly 8 tables at a time. Discuss. Do you think it's right that waiters/waitresses should get tips? If so how much would you give them? If you don't think it's necessary, why not? -------------------- Don't forget to love yourself. I tip drivers like 4 bucks, though if i make an order above 25 dollars i tend to boost it to like 6 bucks. I do tend to tip like 20% or more, cause jobs w/ tips make less than minimum wage.

I believe to tip waiters/waitresses...unless if they were rude or anything, then I wouldn't tip. As simple as that.

I believe in tipping, but I think instead of basing it on 15% of the check, it should be more based on the service/hospitality they give you.
Think about it like this, with Waiter A and Waiter B. Waiter A works at a casual restaurant and brings his customer a $20 steak. Waiter B works at a fancy restaurant and brings his customer a $70 steak. Both share the same level of hospitality, both put in the same amount of effort to bring that steak to the customer's table, and for the sake of argument, we'll assume both make the same hourly wages. Just because of the difference of the quality of restaurant, Waiter B gets a greater tip ($10.50) than Waiter A ($3.00) even though they both did the same work. I don't really think what you pay for the meal should decide what tip the waiter gets; the actual effort the waiter puts in should decide the tip. -------------------- |

Do you think it's right that waiters/waitresses should get tips? Eh, why the hell not? QUOTE If so how much would you give them? When my family goes to restaurants or somewhere, I usually don't bring money so I can't really tip anyone. If I DO bring money, I'll give about..... one dollar, a few cents, or none because I'm a cheap ass. But hey, what's better, one dollar or none? And if I don't give any cash, why should I? It's not like the waiter is expecting anything. QUOTE If you don't think it's necessary, why not? It depends on the customer. If he wants to give the waiter some cash, let him do it. If he doesn't want to, so be it. Waiters gain their money through salary. I'm not saying the don't need tips, If you really want to bring a smile to their face, a simple thank you is enough. It's the thought that counts. This post has been edited by Wings of Sorrow: May 21 2012, 10:08 PM -------------------- ayy

I always make a point to tip just because of the fact that they had to put up with the shenanigans of my friends and I. I haven't had very many servers who were rude, or gave painfully subpar service. There was one point, though, where we couldn't tip because it was either do that, or pay for gas to get everyone home. It just tore me up inside. I still don't understand half of why people say that servers shouldn't get tipped at all.

I give my waiter/waitresses tips based on service myself. I don't really care about the percents or whatever and usually hand them back the change. If the change is like a penny, I'll pull out a five dollar bill or something. Not much more complex than that. I do believe they deserve tips, and considering it's totally optional I don't see any sort of problem with it.

I'd much sooner receive a thank you than a dollar tip, working as a waiter for a short time myself. But that's just my opinion on a personal reason. -------------------- Don't forget to love yourself. The thing is, waiters get paid minnimum waige. hardly eight bux an hour and bad work time. The only reason this is true is because people are expected to tip the waiter/waitress. I can understand not tipping if it is a bad srvice, but otherwise you should tip or your just being cheap.

The thing is with most rich people is they look down on you as if you're not worth their time. It's infuriating yes, especially with that sort of money you'd think they'd at least give something. If I had the money, I would tip. However, I don't. I won't tip someone if I can barely afford to pay for a meal as it is. I actually don't think I've ever tipped... didn't realize it was so common.

If it's a situation where I'm being served my food or it's alcohol, I always tip. For restaurants,10% is as low as I'll go. If service was horrible, I'll either leave nothing or pocket change if they were an ass. I'm a pretty good tipper, though. I generally leave 20%+. For alcohol, at least a dollar per drink. For a situation where there's only a busser, I'll usually leave at least a dollar per person depending on how much service we get.
I think it's rude to leave nothing unless they deserve it. Their wages are lowered since they are expected to receive tips. The only exception would be bussers with no servers, such as at a buffet or something. They make minimum wage but no more so it's still expected to make a couple bucks in tips. I don't eat out if I don't think I can afford it including the tip. -------------------- |

I have honestly never met a waiter or waitress that has given me horrible service. I don't tip based on percentages. I would give them a simple $5 or $10 if I felt the service was excellent. And I always say thank you afterwards. I just love how their faces light up when I only have to say two words. It changes their attitude towards the rest of the customers completely.

I think they should get tips... I mean, they're working for us, they might as well be rewarded!

I tend to tip based on the service. If it's bad, I tend not to tip, if it's good, they can get anywhere from 10-25% the cheaper the meal the bigger the tip.

Tipping is something I'm not really used to. For me, it depends on the type of place I'm eating at - if it's just a chippie, no way. If it's at the Italian restaurant, then 15% of the bill is what I think it's acceptable to tip. Although I can count on one hand the number of times I've been anywhere that you'd tip.
I think it's a nice thing to do if you're in a classier joint than your local pub, but the idea that it's expected of you is wrong to me. Here we have the minimum wage, so everyone working gets paid a set amount for their work. In America, however... I'd be too scared to go eat anywhere because I've heard stories of people being assaulted, shouted at and chased for not tipping. If you want a tip, you should earn it by being helpful, polite and well-presented. I understand that jobs work differently over there, so can see why they rely more on tips, but I don't think that automatically gives them the right to expect more money off of customers |

Tipping, believe it or not, is not just a city in China. However, most people these days pay with either a credit or debit card while purchasing basically everything, so plastic is used for tips. Interchange fees and other things may prevent them from obtaining the total amount. Source for this article: best online payday loans i can call. Indeed, one should constantly make an effort to tip waiters with cash wherever possible.
