What do you guys think? Should Columbus Day be celebrated? He was a hoax after all. They all say that he discovered America, but the Native Americans were already there. And he didn't even land in America, he landed in the Bahamas, which he didn't even think was the Bahamas. He thought he landed in India.
Although I don't mind a day off from school, or the cool parades for Columbus Day, but should it still be celebrated? |

America in that sense does not refer to the United States, it refers to the Americas. That means North America, Central America, and South America. But I see your point. Why we celebrate some Spaniard that raped, pillaged, and killed various Native Americans is beyond me. |

Think of it as a day for everyone to collectively facepalm at such an epic failure. A failure so hard that you need to stay home and rest your mind from it. :V
Didn't he prove the Earth was round, though? If I'm remembering him right and am not mistakenly attributing the achievement, Columbus Day might be still being celebrated for that scientific and geographical milestone. -------------------- |

Let the Italians have their fun. They need something to look forward to every year.
And I refer to the Columbus Day Parade, they have them every year in NYC. -------------------- |

All in all, it might just be some sort of artifact over here, and nobody wanted to outrage any citizens who might be die hard Columbus Day fans (which I doubt exist) by removing the holiday from calendars, or they were lazy, etc. -------------------- |

No just plainly no.
Don't get me wrong, I love a day off from school as much as the next guy, but having a whole day in OUR country over someone who really didn't help us America at all... No I don't think so. In Oklahoma there is this thing called the heavener runestone and it may have been put here by the vikings in 1012 AD. So the theory that columbus should be celebrated in USA I just don't think so. Also Columbus did not discover the world was round... Get it right people XD This post has been edited by erichumshadow: Oct 8 2012, 04:27 PM -------------------- Wanna dance? (click to show ) |

It was widely accepted that the world was round long before Columbus.
In other words, yes it should. We should celebrate this monumental day by walking up to some stranger's house and insist on living there for the rest of our lives. |

I wonder no one posted this:
I wonder how it would be if the europeans didn't 'invade' america, instead could live with the natives. And even if they were hostile, it was their place. This post has been edited by Kontrazent: Apr 13 2013, 09:46 AM -------------------- |
