I'm a little confused as to the new battle items. For the ones that say "that allows a Pokémon to fight as if they had the _____ type", does that mean that they battle as though they have those types of moves, or as though they ARE those types? 'Cause it makes a big difference.

I've been wondering this too. Can someone clear this up since it could be misleading?

Given that there are no 'moves' in the site, i think it's actually the same here.
Consider that your pokes use moves of their own type. So, holding a 'steel' item will make them 'steel' pokemons => with the resistances and weaknesses of the steel type. So, weaker against a 'fire' pokemon for example. -------------------- |

wait, how do you let the pokemon hold an item at all, I don't see how. When you enter the pokemon into the competition, it lets you give the pokemon an item, as well as choose the level of entry and the style of battle. -------------------- |

So, holding a 'steel' item will make them 'steel' pokemons => with the resistances and weaknesses of the steel type. So, weaker against a 'fire' pokemon for example. But then what is the benefit of it? If you wanted to battle with a Steel Pokemon, why not just battle with a Steel Pokemon? That's why I was wondering if it makes it so that your Pokemon stays the same type but battles with the hold item type. So like if I put in a steel type with a Mystic Water, it would be Steel but fight with Water, which in effect would help with Fire Pokemon. That's why I'm asking for clarification on this. -------------------- |

I think the items would add a second attack type. So a Steel type with Mystic Water would fight with both Steel and Water attacks, making it more effective against a greater variety of Pokemon.

The level of the pokemon affects the battle too... So people (who are too lazy) can change the type without training another pokemon up to whatever level they want. |

Lots of things matter, not just the type.
Level, as said jotur, but also the rarity and species of the pokemon. So you might want a specific pokemon, but with a different type since you can't give it moves to counter its natural weaknesses... -------------------- |

Still, I'm hoping there will be some definite clarification on this.

It gives them a bonus against all the types that type is effective against, however none of the weaknesses or penalties.
