In the census topic, I noticed that it said 'home region' (something that meant the same, anyway), then a list of the regions and numbers obviously of the trainers that come from said region. Does this mean that my trainer can come from one of the original regions, then get to Furoh, presumably by ferry?

That is correct. You can hail from a city in Furoh, or an EXISTING city in any of the CANON regions. (emphasis is because it has been asked before if people could come from a non-canon region, and I wish to avoid confusion. Thus, caps!). Kanto and Johto are popular regions to come from.

In theory, you could also come from Almia, Fiore, the Sevii, or Orange Islands.
But no one has really done that yet. (Plus Almia and Fiore don't really have trainers...) -------------------- |

Any region or city that has appeared int he games or anime is considered canon. The express exception is whatever region(s) the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games take place in, since they are kind of an alternate universe.
