So, Osama bin Laden was finally killed yesterday. He's been hunted for almost a decade, and well in the list of the world's top ten most wanted.
So, what are your opinions on this? Apparently, Al Qaeda and jihad websites want revenge on the U.S. What do you think? -------------------- |

For the curious, some opinions from around the world.
Hm. I'm not really sure. The top thought in my mind is essentially, yeah, it's great he's gone, but don't be fooled into thinking that this is the end. We'll see what happens, I think. -------------------- |

It's either going to knock the stuffing out of them or enrage them futher. I have no idea which... *shrugs*
Just curious, but why did they bury him at sea? The consipiracy theorists are gonna love that... -------------------- "The world spins on pain. I realised that if there is a supreme power, then it is our duty to become it's moral superior." -Lord Havelock Vetinari, Patrician of Ankh-Morpork "The sentient may perceive and love the universe, but the universe may not perceive and love the sentient. The universe sees no distinction between the multitude of creatures and elements which comprise it. All are equal. None is favored. The universe, equipped with nothing but the materials and the power of creation, continues to create: something of this, something of that. It cannot control what it creates and it cannot, it seems, be controlled by its creations (though a few might deceive themselves otherwise). Those who curse the workings of the universe curse that which is deaf. Those who strike out at those workings fight that which is inviolate. Those who shake their fists, shake their fists at blind stars."- Michael Moorcock, author. |

I would have to go look that up when I have some time. Muslim tradition requires people to be buried within 24 hours of their deaths, and, as the U.S. government didn't want his burial site to become a "shrine" where terrorists might meet, they gave him a funeral somewhere in the middle of the ocean. Many non-extremist Muslims are annoyed because they gave him the full honors.. it's been compared to burying a serial killer in Arlington. -------------------- |

I agree with Tatzelwyrm. This is far from the end. An organization like that is far from being dissolved, and would most likely still be able to function without a leader. Either another person will take Osama's place, or they'll just continue doing whatever they were doing before he died. A leader isn't required to do something as basic as place bombs on trains and kill people. :/

There are many leaders in Al Qaeda. One could easily step up to Osama's place.

I would have looked into it, but at the time of my previous post, I was getting ready to leave. -------------------- |

I cannot relate to the feeling of losing a loved one in the 9/11 tragedy; thus, my beliefs are not founded in personal experience. Being a disciple of the beliefs of Cesare Beccaria, however, I find it disturbing that the citizens of a modern civilized country would celebrate the death of anyone. I would agree that he should have been killed (it's up to God to forgive him for his crimes); though, that's just that. It was purely necessary in a tactical sense, and taking joy in his death in disconcerting.

Osama was not actually meant to be killed, and the whole thing is a bit gruesome, but this was the best option we had under the circumstances.

"The intentional death of al Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden early Monday morning Pakistan time at the hands of Navy SEALs who don't shoot to wound touched a national nerve of retribution and celebration." Yeah, I'd just heard that it was intentional (he got double-tapped in the side of the head). It could have been unintentional; however, I find such a presumption to be unlikely given the current information. -------------------- |

I thought those "yay osama is dead" were really morbid and terrible but that's because death is such an iffy subject for me that it would piss me off to see that attitude.
At any rate, Osama is pretty much useless to anyone at this point since he's in hiding (feel free to correct me on this I guess?)... what did we even accomplish here...? -------------------- |

Yeah, I don't know. What really struck me is the fact we can condemn others for celebrating someone's death but then this happens? Ngh..

I think people were just celebrating the fact that Osama is no longer a threat, and that their dead relatives were avenged.
But truthfully, I don't see a reason why we should celebrate. Yes, we were triumphant at kicking his ass, but that doesn't mean that we've won the war. In fact, there's a possibility that Al-Qaeda will strike back for revenge. (I've heard that they've already sent a threat... though I'm not quite sure.) -------------------- ayy

I think both the people celebrating his death and the people who find that morbid are partially right. I mean, it's not just the fact that he is dead, it's what comes with it.
On the one hand, it's a huge relief for the people and a sort of revenge for the people whose friends and family were killed in the 9/11 desaster and many other attacks. It's a sign that America is not sitting around doing nothing, too. And also, it might serve as a sort of warning for those who want to fallow in his footsteps. However, it is a morbid thing to celebrate the death of a person, as evil as they might have been. And it's far from over: There will always be people who choose to do what he did, and there are without a doubt many people to continue what he did. So well... I prefer to see this from a rather neutral point. |
