PPS: If you haven't played the Gen 1 games OR their remakes (FireRed/LeafGreen), please put in the one you chose in X&Y. If you haven't played any of those games, select Unplayed.

Back when it was only up to the 3rd Gen, I had all of the versions and chose different starters for each version. My votes for those gens were based on the first version of that gen I had (if that makes sense...).

Gen 1
Blue: Squirtle
Notes: Truthfully, I based the decision off of the show and absolutely loved Ash's spunky Squirtle. Plus, it was set in my mind that I had to use Squirtle since it evolved to the Pokemon that was on the cartridge. Years later when I did replay it I still chose Squirtle since it made more sense to me when battling Gym Leaders/Elite Four. Once evolved him to Blastoise, teaching it an Ice TM made it pretty easy to go through the Elite when accompanied with the team I'd built. Had I bought the FireRed or LeafGreen versions, it would have been hard to not pick Squirtle for my starter. Squirtle's my all-time favorite starter (Blastoise being my favorite Pokemon overall) and it's difficult to be impartial when your favorite is involved.

Gen 2
Silver Version: Chikorita
Notes: By the time the 2nd Gen was released, I was better equipped with battling/type-match ups. Had I known both Legendaries would be available, I probably would have gone with Totodile, but I chose Chikorita because I thought it would do well against Lugia.

SoulSilver: Chikorita
Notes: I thought maybe after playing for a while, I would remember what my original team for Silver had been(my Silver version was stolen back in 2002). So since Chikorita was on that team, I stuck with it.

Gen 3
Sapphire: Treeko
Notes: Mudkip and Torchic didn't appeal to me. Plus, this was in the brief period when I started basing which starter I "should" have when facing the Legendary the plot centered around. So Treeko made sense to me.

Gen 4
Diamond: Piplup
Notes: No logical thought went into this, and there probably should have since I heavily struggled with this starter. But I'm not one to quit, so I stuck it out. The only factor involved was the fact that Water-types are my favorite.

Gen 5
Black: Oshawatt
Notes: Again, blindly went with my favorite type without knowing what was ahead. This is actually the only Pokemon game I own where I haven't finished the main plot...so...yeah. This is in my DS Lite on my nightstand collecting dust.

Gen 6
Unplayed
Notes: I have yet to play with this Gen because I currently do not possess a 3DS or 2DS. Even though I'm dying inside from this, I cannot justify purchasing either of the handheld systems to play two games. Plus, I haven't found an emulator that doesn't slow down my already sluggish laptop.
