Global PokédeX Plus Forums _ Games _ Pokemon Yellow, Pikachu Following you?

Posted by: Professor X Nov 14 2009, 11:46 AM

How come, in Pokemon Yellow, you have a Pikachu following you, and they didn't include it in the future games, (G/S/C, R/B/E, etc), until HG/SS. I mean, there wasn't much space in the older games, so they coulda left it as ONLY your started follows you in those games. Opinions? Comments? Facts?

The original games came before the Anime. They made yellow after the anime, and made it more similar.
The rest of the games don't really fallow the story line like that, so no real NEED for a pokemon (pikachu in this case) fallowing you. I bet it took them a while to design all the sprites for ss hg

That's just my guess =)

Also note that in the first two generations whenever you see Pokèmon outside their pokeballs in random cities, yet they rarely look like each others at all.
The legendary birds all look the same (generic bird) almost any Pokèmon in the fairy egg group looked somewhat similar to Clefairies...only in the Yellow version Pikachu is distinct, and it wasn't untill generation III that each got their own overworld sprites.
Having a strange grey monster-thing that doesn't look like any known Pokèmon isn't quite the same as being followed by what is obviously a Mewtwo.

Why they couldn't just do it for Generation III and IV? Well GoldenMagikarp's guess is as good as any.
Maybe they just didn't have time to install the function too, after all, programing 3-500 Pokèmon into the game is hard enough if not every single one should start following you as well.

Yellow was based on the anime. It was just a gimmik at the time because Pikachu hangs out with Ash in the series.

In HG/SS pokemon can follow you, if that counts.

Yellow was a game that was based off of the anime, which is why the game (Gym Leaders, etc.) are what they are.
I think this is why a pokemon didn't follow you in between the games.

Man, didn't have a chance to play that game.
I need to get those games & try it out,
but it might end up boring since it's old.

Y'know, I always wondered why, too. I guess I learned something today.
Pikachu was but an anime gimmick. OH WELL.

If you get a chance to play, I assure you, it won't get boring.
I prefer the old games, despite the sprites being slightly bad and the color being drab, battles go a lot faster because the attacks arn't extremely slow and the text doesn't take five minutes to scroll down. The music is more upbeat and lively too. i find myslef falling asleep whenever I play Diamond, just because the battles take forever and the music sounds like it should be on an elevator.

Pikachu is yellow is awsome btw, It's a shame they didn't remake it for fire red and leaf green

I always wondered the same.

I played the second generation games before the first, so when I saw that you could have Pikachu behind you in the older games, and nothing at all in the newer games, I was like, "...wut?"

Like others have said, though, I think it was because Yellow was based off of the anime, unlike the other games. Good thing is that they are thinking outside the box now, so we can have our Pokémon buddies with us at all times. (:
