Note: I don't know if this thread is appropriate here but since I'm talking about this site I hope it's okay.
I recently heard that Pixelmon http://pixelmonmod.com/ got a cease and desist from the Pokemon Company and it got me wondering, will this site eventually go through the same fate Pixelmon went through? I really hope not. |

I know these are Nintendo's assets and characters/items/whatever but god DAMN I wish they would stop being so anal over these things.
I get it, they're a company that needs to make money, but these are fanmade things that aren't even profiting off of their items. I'm sure I'm wrong about this somehow, but eh That said, Pixelmon(and Minecraft in general) is quite popular. GPX may have been popular back in the day, but its popularity has diminished over the years to the point where I don't think it's as known about. I'm not going to get my hopes up that Nintendo won't target us at some point, though. For all we know, they could have known about this site for years and have just been lazy about sending out the C&D. I mean, it's still popular, just not AS popular as it used to be. Most of that attributes to older members getting, well, older, and moving on in life. There are several people who have been here for 8+ years, though. -------------------- Light is a spectrum. Why limit yourself to a single hue? I've noticed that Nintendo usually only sends C&Ds to fan projects that are really making waves. Like, if you're getting mentioned by actual gaming news sites or something like that, that tends to be when they step in. Otherwise it seems like they're happy to live and let live.

Other Pokémon-based projects have gotten shut down over the last decade. The Pokémon Company tends to do it if it's an area they're planning or hoping to enter in to or, as the others have said, if the project is getting a lot of attention and they feel it's infringing on their product without having an official partnership.
Nintendo already partnered with Mojang to bring a Super Mario DLC pack to Minecraft, so it could go hand in hand with that. Maybe they're even planning on making a Pokémon DLC pack. Either way, we should be fine. We survived some VERY active years without ever hearing anything from them, and there's a certain other fansite out there doing far worse than us with their payment system. -------------------- Want a rotating avatar like mine? That Pokemon Uranium fangame also got a C&D order. But it's a small fry compared to Pixelmon, isn't it?

I believe Uranium was VERY anticipated and lots of people had waited years for it to finally be released, so not as small as you think.

GPX+ is far from a replacement for actually playing Pokemon. Those who play here who don't already own Pokemon games are unlikely to buy them if it closes down.
For now, Nintendo doesn't seem too interested. |

Yeah, Uranium was a special case. Uh, wow. I heard snippets of the whole escapade with Uranium, but I'd have no idea what I'd do if the project I'd spent 10 years developing was swiftly and suddenly taken down. I wonder if that was the media's fault, more than anything. Thanks for linking this, honestly. -------------------- Light is a spectrum. Why limit yourself to a single hue? One thing that keeps us fairly safe (at least for now) is that we don't do any for profit stuff (like a certain other site). Nothing on GPXPlus can be purchased; any donations are for server costs, so hopefully that would deter C&D stuff.
Now, I don't know how Pixelmon worked other than it providing Minecraft skins (?), and obviously people who do Pokémon-related commissions are often ignored. It could easily be a case of, as others said, the site not being big enough for Nintendo to care. It'd be nice for that to continue being the case. >_> -------------------- Check my GPXPlus journal to see what I contributed to the site! Interested in a commission? PM me. |

Pixelmon added wild Pokemon as mobs, craftable Poke Balls, etc. I imagine the problem with it is that it was a very popular mod, and there's like a bajillion people on YouTube who do Minecraft videos, including several who monetize. It's actually been around since '12 or '13, and I guess it just finally got big enough for Nintendo to notice.

I agree with the fact that Pixelmon // Uranium and such involve campaigns//story modes and such whilst GPX bases itself around hatching eggs. Although the Nintendo games involve hatching eggs, we focus around that and branch off into other additional and original ideas, which sets us far apart from the danger of being shut down.

The fact we don't have an official mobile app in the App & Play Stores helps us stay under the radar too.
It's possible that if Nintendo ever decides to release a mobile game based around hatching Pokémon eggs or raising Pokémon like a Tamagotchi, then they'd be more inclined to crack down on adoptable sites like ours. Given that they're finally jumping in to mobile games, it's not entirely out of the question. -------------------- Want a rotating avatar like mine? Check out my website: randimg!

Nintendo/TPC has to actively protect its copyrights/trademarks or else it loses those legal protections, so it generally targets high-profile fan-made content to create a public record of legal defense. I just can't see them bothering to go after GPX+ at this stage of its lifetime.

Pokefarm? i remember when this launched back in the day, we all sort of made fun of the guy because he treated the whole ordeal very publicly with the air of some sort of vendetta against GPX+. it was pretty funny, if i remember it was a bunch of petty things he didn't like about this site so he did his best to rip it off and "fix" it -------------------- |
