Click for Pokedex page. Type: Grass/ Poison Trait: Overgrow: When Venusaur's HP Gets Low, It's Grass type attack's power is multiplied by 1.5 Strengths and Weaknesses Stats: 80 HP/ 82 Atk/ 83 Def/ 100 SpA/ 100 SpD/ 80 Spd Presumed Tier: Over Used/ Borderline Moveset 1: Tankish Annoyer Venusaur @ Black Sludge Nature: Bold/ Calm Trait: Overgrow EVs: [If Calm] 252 HP/ 72 SpA/ 184 SpD / [If Bold] 252 HP/ 192 Def/ 64 SpA - Sleep Powder - Leech Seed - Energy Ball / Grass Knot - Sludge Bomb / Substitute This is the standard Venusaur. Sleep Powder on the first turn. On the next turn your opponent will be forced to switch or continue their snooze. This is when you use Leech Seed to start sapping their health. Energy Ball can be used if you want a reliable form of attacking. Grass Knot hits Rhyperior, Tyranitar, and Swampert harder. However, Grass Knot has a measly base 20 power when used against Manaphy or Vaporeon. Sludge Bomb is another form of STAB and can sometimes poison your opponent, sapping even more HP. Substitute can be used to block status and attacks at the cost of 1/4th of your HP. The recovery gained by Black Sludge and Leech Seed is usually enough to slough of the damage caused by substitute within one or two turns depending on the seeded foe. Moveset 2: Choice Scarf Venusaur @ Choice Scarf Nature: Timid Trait: Overgrow EVs: 56 HP/ 252 SpA/200 Spd - Leaf Storm - Sludge Bomb - Sleep Powder - HP Ice/ Earthquake This set boosts Venusaur's average speed. Using Choice Scarf Venusaur reaches 405 speed, just enough to outrun Choice Scarf Heracross. Choice sets are usually hit and run, meaning you will most likely switch out after attacking. Leaf Storm is perfect for this. You will be switching out anyway, so the special attack drop will not effect you. Sludge Bomb is another STAB attack. Sleep Powder can be used to sleep a fast opponent that would cause trouble for your team. The last slot is up to preference. HP Ice can hit the dragons of OU (Dragonite/ Salamence/ Garchomp) for 4x super-effective damage. Earthquake can be used to stop Raikou and Jolteon who believe they can set up on you. Moveset 3: Choice Specs Venusaur @ Choice Specs Nature: Modest EVs: 236 HP/ 252 SpA/ 20 Spd - Leaf Storm - Sludge Bomb - HP Ice - Energy Ball/ Sleep Talk/ Grass Knot With Choice Specs equipped, Leaf Storm will hurt all Pokemon without a 4x resistance to Grass. Sludge Bomb is used as a STAB attack. HP Ice is once again for the OU Dragons. Energy Ball can be used if you want to keep Venusaur in for more than one turn. It deals damage without the special attack drop. Sleep Talk is a filler move, but can come in handy if you find yourself asleep. However, be wary that Sleep Talk can only be used once on a choice set before it fails. Grass Knot is used to take down heavier opponents. Moveset 4: Support Venusaur @ Black Sludge Nature: Bold/ Calm Trait: Overgrow EVs: [If Calm] 252 HP/ 72 SpA/ 184 SpD / [If Bold] 252 HP/ 192 Def/ 64 SpA - Sleep Powder/ Leech Seed - Reflect/ Light Screen - Energy Ball / Grass Knot - Charm/ Amnesia/ Sludge Bomb This set puts Venusaur's support capabilities in the limelight. The entire set is mostly up to preference and what suits your team the most. Other Options: There are almost zero other special options. HP Fire can be used to take down steel types. Synthesis can be used as a one turn recovery technique, but isn't encouraged because of the prevalence of Sandstorm in the current metagame. Swords Dance can be used for a surprising physical set, along with Seed Bomb/ Earthquake/ Double Edge. Toxic can be used if you want to apply more gradual damage to your opponent. Roar can be used if you need a phazer to get rid of stat-upping opponents. EVs: EVs for Venusaur are mainly focused in HP, Special Attack, and one of the defenses. On tanking sets, the majority of effort values are placed in a single defense and use a nature that boosts that defense. Max HP is always recommended for tanking sets, because it allows you to take hits from both the special and physical sides. On choice and special attacking sets a liberal amount of EVs should be placed in Special Attack. Counters: The majority of steel types including Metagross, Jirachi, Lucario, and Bronzong can come in on Venusaur and are immune to Poison and resist Grass. They can then begin setting up. However, steel types need to be wary of the random Earthquake and HP Fire. Poison types resist both moves, but many are slow and can be easily dealt with by Sleep Powder. Salamence and Dragonite can come in on choice grass attacks or Leech Seed and force you to retreat. Celebi also can make an appearance in a similar fashion and threaten you with Psychic, but fears Choice Specs Sludge Bomb. Opinion Venusaur is a great special or defensive tank. Leech Seed is always a great asset to the team. Venusaur can come in on the main physical attackers of this generation including Rhyperior, Gyarados, and Electivire and can punish them thoroughly. Venusaur can also come in on the majority of electric special attackers such as Zapdos, Jolteon, and Raikou. However, you do need to watch out for HP Ice and Zapdos's Drill Peck. -------------------- |
