IF YOU HAVE DONE MULTIPLE RUNS OF A GENERATION, VOTE FOR EVERY STARTER YOU USED.

THANK YOU.

Anyway, please post what you voted for in this thread. To set an example, I'm posting mine.

Gen 1: Bulbasaur
Gen 2: Cyndaquil
Gen 3: Unplayed
Gen 4: Chimchar, Piplup
Gen 5: Oshawott
Gen 6: Froakie

Thanks! grin.gif

PS: For Hoenn, please do not vote for Torchic because you got the Mystery Gift in X/Y. I know you can't get it anymore, but I'm telling you that anyway. :P

PPS: If you haven't played the Gen 1 games OR their remakes (FireRed/LeafGreen), please put in the one you chose in X&Y. If you haven't played any of those games, select Unplayed.

Let Us In

Gen 1
Red Version

1st full playthrough: Squirtle
Subsequent plays: Bulbasaur and Charmander
Notes: I had the least success and fun with Charmander, so I only used it once. While I had the most success with Squirtle, Bulbasaur was a lot of fun because of the whole drain/chip damage strategy it forced me to use. I adore stall/drain and tank to this day because of both Bulbasaur and Squirtle, respectively.

FireRed Version
1st full playthrough: Bulbasaur
Subsequent plays: Squirtle and Charmander
Notes: This time, I had the most success with Bulbasaur due to the slightly expanded movepool. Muscling through with Squirtle this time was fine, but rang a bit hollow. Charmander was no fun, as usual. At least I completed a file with her, though. (I got a female first try, so I decided to stick the file out because of how rarely that happens.) It was during this game that I realized x4 Rock damage made me sadface, as it took me forever to get through Bruno of the E4 with Charizard. (I played this game before I knew/gave a crap about type coverage and complimentary team members.)

Gen 2
Silver Version

1st full playthrough: Totodile
Subsequent plays: Cyndaquil
Notes: The first time playing, I thought both Totodile and Cyndaquil were cool and I didn't know who to pick first, so I arbitrarily chose Totodile. He was a lot of fun, especially since alligators were my favorite animal back then. I choose Cyndaquil all the time now, though, because she grew on me and this is the only gen where I have ever liked the fire starter. EVER. (I soft reset for a female Cyndaquil every time, no matter what.) I never liked Chikorita because of the anime, so I never chose it.

SoulSilver Version

1st full playthrough: Cyndaquil
Subsequent plays: Totodile and Cyndaquil
Notes: Remembering how much I enjoyed Cyndaquil, I chose it first. It was as fun as I remembered. :) I chose Totodile on a subsequent playthrough, but it wasn't as fun, so I restarted again with Cyndaquil.

Gen 3
Emerald Version

1st full playthrough: Treecko
Subsequent plays: Mudkip and Treecko
Notes: Treecko was my favorite gen 3 starter. I thought Sceptile was so awesome looking. I never chose Torchic because I didn't like the Fighting type. (It's still my least favorite, just nowhere near as harshly as before thanks to gen 5's cute and imaginative Fighters.) I played with Mudkip on subsequent playthroughs because he had stronger moves and a wider movepool overall. It was kind of a downer that his Water and Ice moves had to be cued off of his lower Special Attack, though.

The problem I currently have with Sceptile is that he's special, but has an all physical movepool and no strategy I can really take advantage of since he's not built for statusing or draining. Worse, he gets Giga Drain only as Treecko, and at Lv.46. I can't remember where the gen 3 TM was, but it only had 60 power and 5 PP back then, which was way too impractical to truly consider. With Sceptile in general, you kinda can only whale on the enemy and hope it dies before you do. :/

If gen 3 gets remade, I hope they either switch his special and physical base stats, or overhaul his movepool so that he gets some better special moves, because currently he has Energy Ball...and that's it. BW2 was benevolent enough to give him Dragon Pulse through move tutor to make up for Dragon Claw turning Physical after gen 3, but XY took it away again. Dragon Breath is an egg move, but we're talking about the starter you choose at the beginning of the game. You shouldn't have to breed for a halfway decent movepool for your in-game starter, IMO. (I know this sounds weird, but I'm hoping gen 3 remakes get held off until gen 7 so that some more interesting moves can come into existence that he can use.)

Gen 4
Diamond/Platinum Version

1st full playthrough: Turtwig
Subsequent plays: Turtwig
Notes: This was a beautiful situation. Torterra was amazingly fun to use, had lots of fun moves to take advantage of, and wasn't hindered by them being cued off the wrong attacking stat. When I had first heard of gen 4, my plan was to use Chimchar, but then I heard he was Fighting, and I still didn't like Fighting at the time. All three of the starters looked fun, though, and I actually really like playing with Empoleon in Battle Towers or just goofing off in postgames. He's got a beautiful typing, too. I really wish it would get used again on a "regular" pokemon. Why didn't I ever use him in-game? Because it would mean that the rival would get my precious Torterra, that's all. XD

Gen 5
Black/2 Version

1st full playthrough: Snivy
Subsequent plays: Snivy
Notes: I didn't really like any of the starters this gen. Snivy was the the one I liked the most out of the three, but there have definitely been starters that I've loved more. Thankfully, Serperior was the most fun I've ever had using a starter pokemon. I was actually surprised when I learned that people hated it and cited that it had an atrocious movepool because I never noticed. Looking back, yes, it only has Grass and Normal, but I had made a successful strategy using this pokemon, and this was the first time I ever did anything of the sort. All of the gens above, I did most of those subsequent plays after I played gen 5 because I wanted to see if I could make strategies for starters in other games, too. My setup for Serperior was Leech Seed, Coil, Leaf Blade, and Giga Drain while holding Leftovers. I would open with Leech Seed, Coil several times, Giga Drain off any damage, then sweep with Leaf Blade. Leftovers wasn't available for in-game abuse in Black, but it didn't matter outside of a few occasions that forced me to switch.

Gen 6
Y Version

1st full playthrough: Froakie
Subsequent plays: N/A
Notes: I had fun using Greninja. I did "mess up" using him for the majority of the game, and would like to have another try at it. I used mostly physical moves, but his special attack was higher (not by any groundbreaking amount, but still). I prefer to use a pokemon as either all-special or all-physical so that I don't have to split EV's among both offensive stats and can just dump all effort into one, and have that one be really good so that I can invest the rest of the EV's into HP and Defenses.

I didn't bother with Super Training until postgame, which was a big mistake because I could have filled out his important stats to keep trash EV's from piling up. I never knew how much they could wreck what you intended for your build until I saw the Super Training graph after the E4. Everything was in freaking Speed, with another majority in Physical Attack and then negligible amounts in HP/D/SD. Bulbapedia and Serebii didn't have BST listings at the time IIRC, so I thought Greninja's Physical attack was naturally way higher. Then there was the whole debacle with the stupid mandatory HM's returning. The whole situation was a flat-out mess. His final moveset was Surf, Waterfall, Night Slash, and Extrasensory. (I've since re-tuned his EV's, and his current moveset is Surf, Ice Beam, Dark Pulse, and Extrasensory.)

Here's the kicker, though: even with such an aimless layout, he still performed really, really well. Between him and Furfrou, I almost didn't really need anyone else on my team. When I got to the Battle Maison, though, he was useless. Even after re-tuning and focusing, he could barely deal any damage and couldn't really take a hit. (I'm talking unevolved crap mons tanking his hits and besting him.) I took him to the IV checker, and after analyzing what he said and running the numbers through an IV calculator, He didn't have a single IV above 10. That sucks. The rest of my in-game team was the same. All of them had trouble in the Maison, and all of them came back with "Your pokemon is decent. It's [X] stat is very good." (read: "Your pokemon is utter shit.")

Too bad you can no longer start new temporary files, or I'd give the main game another shot. I really wish I had another SD Card. :( When the deluxe version(s) come out, I'll know exactly how to build him, and he'll be far more effective. Hopefully hacking will be available at that point, too, so I can view my starter's IV's from the outset to avoid having to trash it at the end and tear my hair out breeding a new one. Just so it isn't utterly useless at the local battle facility. Everyone parrots that breeding is easier in XY, but not as much as they think.

1. You need to have good pokemon to breed good pokemon. Everything -and I legitimately mean every single thing, without exaggeration or exception- that I caught during the game was "Lol decent all around". I hope that in future games, you'll get promised something like 1 or 2 perfect IV's on your starter.

2. Even with the 2-3 guaranteed 31 IV pokemon they added and the Destiny Knot, it still comes down to luck and a ton of tedium. "5 IVs are coded to carry over!" Good! Hey, did you know that there's a stupid loophole in that bit of programming? Your 5 IV's will carry over, but 2-3 of the other parent's IV's are still coded to carry over, too, so even if 5 31's from parent A get mapped down, if 3 of them overlap with the 3 from parent B that are scheduled to be mapped down, the perfect ones will be overwritten. "Put Destiny Knot on one and a Power Item on the other so that you get exactly what you want!" Only one IV tool works at a time. If you use both, the game will pick a random one to put in effect.

This may seem like rambling, but it is all related to the experience of using a starter pokemon, albeit the more sentimental side. I shouldn't have to ditch my very first companion that was given to me by a friend because of a bad dice roll for a crappy game mechanic that makes said special companion completely unuseable for the part of the game that has the most replay value. That just feels wrong.

EDIT:
Mega Starter: Bulbasaur, but I never used it because:
a) I didn't give a hoot about megas.
b) I didn't like that, once again, an interesting region with a kindhearted and less than confident professor that I wanted to see more characterization from had Kanto's fat ass sitting all over it and hogging attention. (The first instance being Johto.)

On Blue and FireRed I always picked Squirtle and it would always have the trivial water starter nickname, such as "bubbles" or "stormy", but on XY I went with Bulbasaur and it was called Skkot. On Silver and SoulSilver I picked Cyndaquil also with a mediocre nickname like "flamey" or something, and on HeartGold I picked Chikorita. I've played Emerald more times than I can count and I'd always pick either Torchic "flamey" or Mudkip "kip". My first starter ever was Turtwig on Platinum, called "tortoise". On Black/Black 2 and White/White 2, I always went with Snivy. And on XY my starter is Froakie "Shaun" (I didn't even notice the girl rival was called Shauna so that was surprising to me)

Water Domination!

Back when it was only up to the 3rd Gen, I had all of the versions and chose different starters for each version. My votes for those gens were based on the first version of that gen I had (if that makes sense...).

Gen 1
Blue: Squirtle

Notes: Truthfully, I based the decision off of the show and absolutely loved Ash's spunky Squirtle. Plus, it was set in my mind that I had to use Squirtle since it evolved to the Pokemon that was on the cartridge. Years later when I did replay it I still chose Squirtle since it made more sense to me when battling Gym Leaders/Elite Four. Once evolved him to Blastoise, teaching it an Ice TM made it pretty easy to go through the Elite when accompanied with the team I'd built. Had I bought the FireRed or LeafGreen versions, it would have been hard to not pick Squirtle for my starter. Squirtle's my all-time favorite starter (Blastoise being my favorite Pokemon overall) and it's difficult to be impartial when your favorite is involved.

Gen 2
Silver Version: Chikorita

Notes: By the time the 2nd Gen was released, I was better equipped with battling/type-match ups. Had I known both Legendaries would be available, I probably would have gone with Totodile, but I chose Chikorita because I thought it would do well against Lugia.

SoulSilver: Chikorita
Notes: I thought maybe after playing for a while, I would remember what my original team for Silver had been(my Silver version was stolen back in 2002). So since Chikorita was on that team, I stuck with it.

Gen 3
Sapphire: Treeko

Notes: Mudkip and Torchic didn't appeal to me. Plus, this was in the brief period when I started basing which starter I "should" have when facing the Legendary the plot centered around. So Treeko made sense to me.

Gen 4
Diamond: Piplup

Notes: No logical thought went into this, and there probably should have since I heavily struggled with this starter. But I'm not one to quit, so I stuck it out. The only factor involved was the fact that Water-types are my favorite.

Gen 5
Black: Oshawatt

Notes: Again, blindly went with my favorite type without knowing what was ahead. This is actually the only Pokemon game I own where I haven't finished the main plot...so...yeah. This is in my DS Lite on my nightstand collecting dust.

Gen 6
Unplayed

Notes: I have yet to play with this Gen because I currently do not possess a 3DS or 2DS. Even though I'm dying inside from this, I cannot justify purchasing either of the handheld systems to play two games. Plus, I haven't found an emulator that doesn't slow down my already sluggish laptop.

Gen 1: Charmander (In both the originals, remakes, and X and Y)
Gen 2: Cyndaquil (In both the remakes and the original games)
Gen 3: Torchic
Gen 4: Chimchar
Gen 5: Tepig
Gen 6: Fennekin

I've never played the original Gen I and Gen II, however I've played FireRed/LeafGreen and Heart Gold.

Gen I: Squirtle - Nickname: SQURT - Ah SQURT, my first Pokemon. This guy's been with me from the start. He spent a little time in my brother's care, but eventually was returned. As much as I hate that I spelled his name wrong(I was five at the time), I still love using him in battle.

Gen II: Totodile - Nickname - Totodo - Totodo, a really plain name. I really don't know why I picked it for him, I mean HER. I actually had no idea my Totodo was female until the second rival battle. x(.gif Nonetheless, she is probably one of my favorite starters to use.

Gen III: Treecko - Nickname: Geico - Nickname is self-explanatory. Geico is probably my least favorite starter. Don't get me wrong, I like him, but I never really got around to using him all that much. He really doesn't know any good moves, besides Earthquake and Leaf Blade, and can't really defend against Ice types, a weakness my team shares.

Gen IV: Torterra - Nickname: Octavian - Nicknamed by my brother, Octavian has proven himself to be an extremely reliable choice. He is able to withstand an Ice Gem/Ice Beam combo and take some of the most brutal Fire type attacks. He's actually a lot faster than I thought he would be. Definitely a favorite.

Gen V: Serperior - Nickname(s): Link & Holly - Link was the Serperior I had in my White version, which I eventually lost. Holly, on the other hand, is probably my favorite starter than even SQURT. Female Serperior are much harder to get than male ones, so I was lucky. She's powerful, fast, and knows f*ckin' Outrage! Along with Alduin, my shiny Haxorus, and my Keldeo, she can prove to be very difficult to take down.

Gen VI: Greninja - Greninja is. The most. Overpowered thing. I have ever seen. He was my first level 100 in the Kalos region and knocked out Pokemon that his moves were quadruply ineffective against. He just has over 300 speed, 301, and, along with my Lucario, is probably my favorite starter than even Holly.

Mystery Dungeon

I hate to admit that I started Pokemon in Gen III with Sapphire, but here are my starters:

Gen I:
When I played X, I chose Squirtle (because turtles). I also played a bit on my friend's FireRed and chose Charmander.

Gen II:
I have HeartGold, and I chose Cyndaquil. At first, I was stuck between him and Chikorita. But after using Cyndaquil and his evolutions, I decided that he is one of my favorite starters.

Gen III:
I picked Torchic in Sapphire. This was back when I thought it was a great idea to only train him and provide him with 3 fire type moves. I have replayed and I picked Mudkip.

Gen IV:
Turtwig! He was on Diamond, and I chose Piplup on Platinum.

Gen V:

Snivy in both White and White 2. I love Snivy, he would probably be my 2nd favorite starter.

Gen VI:
Do I even need to say anything?

Y Team (minus Gen 6)

Gen 1: Charmander, Squirtle (FireRed & X, Y)
Gen 2: Cyndaquil, Totodile (HeartGold, Soulsilver)
Gen 3: Treecko, Mudkip (Ruby, Sapphire)
Gen 4: Piplup (Pearl & Platinum)
Gen 5: Snivy (White & White 2, forgot to add Oshawott for Black & Black 2 ffff)
Gen 6: Fennekin, Froakie (Y, X)

I usually tend towards fire or water types, grass is more of an exception. I picked Snivy in Gen 5 because I had seen the rest of the evolution lines before and thought that the final ones looked awful for the other two...

Gen I: Charmander
Gen II: Chikorita
Gen III: Torchic
Gen IV: Piplup
Gen V: Snivy
Gen VI: Fennekin

Yeah, most of my starter picks were made with the final evolution theorized to be Flying types. Charizard was only thing spot on. I thought since Torchic and Piplup were, well, bird-looking, that they'd be Flying types in their final forms. I was wrong, obviously.

I chose Chikorita because she was cute and Snivy because he seemed like a gentleman scholar (XD). As for the sixth gen, Fennekin was adorable.

Gen 1: This was what I picked when I played Pokemon Leafgreen, I picked Squirtle and named him Sheldon, after my Squirtle in PMD: EOT

Gen 2: Pokemon Soul Silver, with one of my favourites, Lugia. I picked Cyndaquil and named it Blaze, he was helpful.

Gen 3: Hoenn! I played Pokemon Sapphire this time and picked Treecko and named him Blade, anyway, I can't wait till Pokemon Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby! cat.gif

Gen 4: I played Pokemon Platinum and chose Turtwig and named it Koopa (after one of Bowser's minions in the Super Mario series.).

Gen 5: When I played Pokemon Black I chose Tepig and named him Bacon, then when I played Pokemon Black 2 I picked Snivy I named it Ivy.

Gen 6: Pokemon X was fun, when I first played this game, I picked Chespin and named him Chestnut, and he kicked butt in my game, he even helped he beat Diancie's Mega Gardevoir when I was about to lost hope.

(Anyway, I picked Squirtle once again in Pokemon X and named it Sheldon like my Squirtle in Pokemon Leafgreen.)

Gen 1: Charmander. Always Charmander.
Gen 2: Cyndaquil, and I just realized after doing the poll that I'm using Chikorita in HeartGold. n_n
Gen 3: Torchic in RSE, Treecko in OR.
Gen 4: Chimchar in Pearl, Piplup in Platinum. Never evolved that Piplup either; it was forever a Piplup.
Gen 5: Oshawott & Snivy, but I forget which I used in Black and which I used in White 2.
Gen 6: Fennekin
