I'm trying to figure out how I could battle and interact with my boyfriend who's out of state in college now. How would we be able to do that?

you need to go to the menu around the mystery gift is the wi fi settings thingy go to that set up your wi fi settings and now u can use wi fi

Basically you're going to go buy yourself a router and set up some wireless internet or you could use your phone as a hotspot, assuming it has the function to do so. Then you're going to exchange Pal Pad codes and whatnot with your boyfriend then you can trade.
