Ivy grumbled: "Fine, we can use the roddy but when the fish get caught, we've got to battle!" She emphasised this with a swing of her fist which got her Pokemon all riled up as they began to bark and howl with excitement. Victor seemed to wither with exasperation for a moment but he recovered quickly and proceeded to show Ivy the details of setting bait to hook and the technique that was used to cast the line into the water. She watched with heightened curiousity, paying particular attention to the delicate movements of her teammate's fingers and wondered if her own would manage with such a task.

"Here, now you try." VIctor said, offering Ivy the rod and line. She balked, blushing and pushing it back towards him.

"No no! I'll do it wrong!" She protested, but Victor forced it into her hands.

"You won't if I'm here and we work together!" He announced, showing Ivy how to hold the rod. She delighted in the way that Victor was able to quickly teach her the basics and then reassuringly guide her through the motions of her new skill. She clumsily broke bait on the hook several times but with each attempt, he assured her that she was doing it right but just needed practise. She blushed even more - she had rarely ever been given compliments by humans in her lifetime and she didn't really know what to say.

"It's pulling me!" Ivy squealed, tensing her arms and setting her legs as the line suddenly jerked into the water.

"That's it!" Victor urged her, his messy hair looking particularly comical as he hopped up and down next to her. "Heave!"

With a roar, Ivy pulled back sharply on the rod and a glimmering Magikarp soard clear of the crystal lake and into the air. In an instant, Ivy forgot about the rod and dropped it as she and her Pokemon raced to battle with the fish.

"It's battle time! I'll show you how to do it, now!" Ivy giggled as Beta and Alpha leapt into the fray.

Victor caught the rod Ivy dropped with his other hand. "So eager to battle," Victor described his partner as she commanded her canine pals to execute a series of attacks, though it didn't take much to defeat a Magikarp. "Everything seems to be just fun and games for her." Victor watched Meowth play with reeds of cattails sticking out of the water. The cat was very careful not to get wet. "Oh! A bite!" He heaved on the rod and yanked the Magikarp right out of the water. It began flopping around on the ground.

"I caught it!" said Ivy, displaying another Aqua Ball. "Hey! Where did you come from?" she asked the new Magikarp.

"I just pulled it out," said Victor. "If we can keep up with each other we can have this done systematically. I'll fish them out and you can catch them. Got it?"

"Yessiree!" Ivy said enthusiastically.

"This is kinda fun!" Victor said after about thirty minutes of non-stop karp catching. "But my arm's getting pretty tired. Why don't we report to Fredward? I'm sure Alpha and Beta could use an ether or something."

"Okeydokers! But help me with these karpies!" Ivy said, pointing to a sack filled with Aqua Balls of Magikarp. "We sure caught a lot!"

They arrived at the tent they had set up and dumped the bag of Aqua Balls on the floor. Fredward's eyes widened when he saw how many Pokemon Victor and Ivy had caught together, but his excited expression was wiped clean off his face once they reported. "These are all Magikarp... sir," Victor said.

"Magikarp?! Those are just about the most useless Pokemon you can find! What the hell are we supposed to do with all these?! They can't be used in Aqua's operations! All they do is flop around and splash!" Fredward scolded them.

Magikarp may seem to be completely useless Pokemon at first, but when they undergo evolution, the end result is competitive battler's dream come true. Victor in his mind heard the words of his water-Pokemon-professor-in-training-friend Vitalis. Some Magikarp have been known to evolve right on the spot when put through enough emotional stress. "Magikarp aren't all that bad," Victor said sheepishly. "When they evolve-"

"And how do you expect to train so many Magikarp at once? You can't!" Fredward's face was a bright shade of red. "Get out and catch some useful Pokemon!"

"Get out and catch some useful Pokemon!"

"I did!!!" Ivy yelled back at him, her temper suddenly flaring dramatically. "And you stole him offa me! GIMME BACK MY BUIZEL!"

Fredward's glaring eyes and crimson face became even more intense as Ivy hollered at him and with no warning, his arm snaked out and he back-handed the girl across the face. Being small and slight of frame, Ivy stumbled to her knees and tottered a bit as the force knocked her down. Vitalis gasped femininely and clapped his hands to his mouth in horror. Despite his initial reaction, he was quick to help Ivy to her feet and guide her towards the exit. Alpha and Beta growled menacingly at Fredward but he ignored them as Vitalis urged them all outside.

"Why's he got to be so stupid and Silly for?!" Ivy grumbled, a big red mark flaring up on her cheek. Her hair was in disarray as always but somehow knowing what had just happened seemed to make it look worse in Vitalis' eyes.

"Silly? He's down right crazy!?" Vitalis snorted, touching Ivy's face lightly. "You're going to get a nasty bruise but you should be OK. How do you feel?"

"Feel? This?" Ivy looked confused. "Oh, I've had worse. Mum nearly broke my arm once! That was pretty funny..." Ivy's anger had managed to fade almost completely after Vitalis had led her outside and it had been replaced with her sense of urgency to complete the mission. "What are we gonna do with these guys? Release 'em?" She asked, hefting a sack of Aqua Balls.

"Yes, I suppose so." Vitalis sighed. "And we worked so hard, too."

"Yeah, but this just means we have something more to give one hundred percent to now!" She grabbed a couple of balls and fired off their release mechanisms. "Bye bye karpies!" Flashes of blue light threw the discarded Magikarp back into the water with awkward splashies. "Get out of here, you useless fish monsters!"

Vitalis laughed and grabbed some more Aqua Balls. "Yeah, get lost you stupid dumb fish food!"

The pair giggled and laughed as they realesed the Magikarp en masse, insultiing each as it splashed manically to get away.
Ivy laughed harderas she threw the final Karp away. "Go home, stupid piles of fish bones and scabby scaled Sillies!"

The last fish crashed into the water with a strangled scream and was suddenly enveloped in a brilliant white light. Ivy, dazzled by the incandescent glare fell back on her behind while Vitalis shielded his eyes with dainty fingers.

"No... no..." He moaned quietly, backing away from the water.

"What's the matter, silly?" Ivy asked squinting into the growing, swirling light that was rising from the water. It was changing shape, too. Long and thin like the catlady's old Pokemon...

"It's evolving..." Vitalis whimpered, grabbing Ivy by the hand and pulling her to her feet. "We have to run!"

"Run? Run why? Why are you being so Silly?!"

"Because it's Gyarados!" Vitalis screamed, the ferocious sea monster's maw materialising out of the light. It let forth a mighty roar as the pair began to back away, true flight denied to them as their muscles were paralyzed with fear. Several more patches of light instantly began to glimmer around the same spot where the massive beast had come from. "And that Gyarados doesn't look very happy!"

"Holy-" Victor's sentence was cut off by a powerful roar of blatant fury. The Magikarp were evolving rapidly and the Gyarados truly were a competitive battler's dream come true... and Victor and Ivy's worst nightmare. There was another roar. It sounded nothing like the Pokemon's name; it only sounded like an angry battle cry. A bright beam of power was emitted from behind the fleeing partners.

"Hyper Beam?!?" Ivy said, shocked and panicked. "Since when did-" Victor let out an ear-piercing shriek as several trees came crashing down. Ivy gasped loudly. "Beta!" The little Electrike was standing at the water's edge, snarling with a nasty look on its face. Beta was ready to fight. Ivy ran towards her Pokemon. Alpha reappeared next to Beta and took on a fighting stance as well.

"Ivy! There's no way we-"

"Thunder Wave!" Ivy commanded.

"There's just no way to get her spirit down," Victor described his partner to himself. He ran to the lake's edge and faced the Gyarados as well. There were eight of them now, way too many for them to face. Victor swallowed the lump in his throat and let out his three Pokemon. "Meowth! Continually use Flash on as many Gyarados as you can! Trapinch! Do the same with Sand-Attack! Spoink! Use Psywave!" Victor commanded his Pokemon. His instincts must have been kicking in because he had never thought so quickly in a battle.

Ivy did the same for her Pokemon. "Beta! Parlalalyze as many as you can, then take 'em down with Thunder Fang! Alpha! Gain some stats with Howl, then chomp 'em!"

Meowth, Trapinch and Beta worked hard to diminish the Gyarados' abilities, but by doing so, they only made the situation more dangerous. The Gyarados fired attacks in any direction, having their accuracy inhibited, and the once beautiful Montague Point was being destroyed.

Just then, Victor's eye caught a Poliwag knocked out by the rampaging Gyarados. "No! Now's not the time!" Victor argued with himself aloud. "But it's so perfect!" After a quick debate with himself, he ran into the shallows and pulled out a Premier Ball. If I use an Aqua Ball, it'll be taken away. He threw the ball and it tapped the KO'ed Poliwag. "Yay! I caught it! And-" Victor stopped midsentence to make room for an even louder, more shrill screech. When he looked up, a huge, powerful blue tailfin was mere feet away from crushing his body.

"Victor!"

Just then, several Aqua bandana-clad figures arrived on the scene.

"Victor!" Ivy yelled just as the Gyarados's Aqua Tail slammed home. His breath caught in his throat before he had chance to scream and still had not found a way to escape his lips before the massive sea serpent's tail had flung him out and over the lake. He soared through the air like a tired Hoothoot before hitting the glass surface of the water with a cumbersome splash.

Ivy began to run towards the lake but firm hands held her still. She looked down at her shoulders to see large male hands trimmed by stylish black and blue cuffs rooting her to the spot. "Wha-?" She began but orders were already being barked from all around her.

"Frith! Watson! Clear the area! Team 19 engage the Gyarados! Team 12 hold back for support!"

Ivy was slowly released as awe overcame her, her wide eyes taking in the the upper Elites and their Pokemon as they did battle with the fearsome Gyarados. She looked up at the man who had been holding her and found herself face to face with Officer Crichton. His brilliant blue eyes were not cold like those that had glared at her back at the Maw's entrance but were shining soflty with an almost-frown of compassion. His bush-like moustache bristled as he spoke to her.

"Young recruit, you need to move to safety." He intoned, his voice commanding yet soft.

"But Victor is-"

"You mean Vitalis. Yes, I have men retrieving him now. You however, must move away from this area. Quickly!" He gave her a light shove with those massive hands and she stumbled away, backing off from the waterfront slowly.

"Blastoise! Skull Bash!"
"Get in there, Luxray!"

Fredward came running up from Ivy's side, puffing and panting like a Munchlax in summer. "Kylarian! Are you alright?"

"Fine." Ivy snorted, folding her arms and pouting. "But Victor is off in the water and I'm not allowed to help. he got hit by a Gyarados, you know. He was so brave - he didn't even scream or anything."

"Whatever." Fredward spat, three Pokeballs coming tohis hands. "I'm going in to help finish off this lot. Considering you and the boy found these Gyarados I'm sure you will get a reward out of it when we return." He didn't seem happy to be giving Ivy the good news, nor did she really care.

"Are you going to find Victor?" She asked before he could leave. "I want him to be OK."

"The Officer has everything under control." Fredward snapped impatiently, pulling out of Ivy's grip and trotting away. "Just keep out of trouble until I come back!"

Ivy sighed and sat down. The ferocious battle that lay before her went on unnoticed as she pondered what to do. Alpha and Beta came to join her, both licking her face and hands with worry but she comforted them with scratches to the chin as she thought about what to do next. She didn't like feeling helpless but in that particular instance she was nothing but! Her eyes searched the sky, the grass, the lake for ideas but none came until she noticed the little white ball that was sitting in the grass. Victor's Spoink was looking at it curiously and bouncing with excitement - probably wondering if he should swap it for his pearl. Meowth and Trapinch were nowhere to be seen.

"Oh! Silly Spoinkles!" She laughed, springing up and dashing to the pig Pokemon. "That's your Victor's Premier Ball, isn't it? Well, we had better hide it before anyone sees! We don't want it to be taken away like my Buizelkins, do we?"
Spoink looked at Ivy with some confusion but made no move to stop her from picking up the ball and slipping it into her own pocket.
"Now, let's go find Victor and your friends and go home, yes?" She said, picking up the Spoink and whistling for Alpha and Beta to follow her as she ran around the outskirts of the battle looking for the medical team and any evidence that her teammate had been brought in.

[Pumpkin King]

The Gyarados's powerful tailfin knocked the wind right out of Victor's lungs. Victor felt like his life was ending as he soared through the air. He slammed into the lake's surface on his back and the sound was enough to make any bystander cringe, that is, if they weren't busy controlling the enraged Gyarados. The elites did not seem to be having a very difficult time, but the blue serpents definitely held their attention. After the initial impact, Victor slowly started sinking into the freshwater. He was unsure if his paralysis was of nuerological damage or fear, but it kept him immobilized.

"Vapo!" A four-legged creature materialized before Victor's blurred vision. It clenched its jaw on Victor's shirt and swam, kicking almost violently with its four paws and tailfin. Every upstroke of the tailfin propelled Victor and the Pokemon he assumed to be some type of aquatic angel forward. "Oreon!" The Pokemon cried as they broke the surface.

"Th-thank... y-y-you..." Victor took large gulps of air and stumbled in the shallow water. The Gyarados were on the far side of the lake. That was some hit, he thought. He tripped and fell on his side, too exhausted to attempt to get up. His eyes drooped shut as the Vaporeon began pulling his hlaf-submerged body out of the lake. "Is... I-Ivy...o-o-ok?"

"Lagos is safe. Transporting grunt for medical examination now," was the last Victor heard before he blacked out.

Short, but I think it's sufficient.

Ivy stumbled into the Infirmary with one thing on her mind. Eggs!

"Viiiiictoooor!" She wailed, throwing herself upon her new friend's bed and shaking him violently awake. "Wake up you Silly Sleepy Head!!!!"

Victor, aka Vitalis, woke with a start and instantly let forth a guttural moan as pain wracked him from all sides. Nearly everything hurt and the sensation of throbbing all over his skin was nearly enough to make him vomit even without Ivy's annoying shakes of the bed.

"Ugh... what?!" He groaned, pushing Ivy away weakly and peering at her through slitted eyes. She grinned inanely and patted him on the head.

"Good boy! You're all better now! Well, Nursey says it will be a few days before you can walk again, but no biggie!" Victor gave Ivy a VERY dubious quirk of the eyebrow. Apparently, he thought it was a 'biggie'? "Anywho! Look what I brought!"

Ivy reached down and picked up Victor's Spoink, Meowth and Trapinch and placed them all on the bed where they fussed over their masters with wails of delight.

"They missed you before and I've been looking after them since we left the lake. Your Meowth is so Silly, though. He doesnt really like playing with my Alpha and Beta and he scratched on them a couple of times but they just chomped on him for fun. Ooooh and look what else!" Ivy reached into her pocket and fished out a gleaming white Premier Ball in its minimised state. "I found this up at the lake and thought it was yours since your Pokeballs are all white! I didn't want anyone to take it so, *swipe*!, I took it!"

Victor stared miraculously at the Premier as Ivy handed it over. "Th-thanks!" He stammered.

"No probs! Nosiree!" Ivy grinned. "You're my friend so I have to make sure I do the things that make you happy, see?"

"Friend?" Victor nearly had tears in his eyes as he gurgled the word.

"Well, duh!" Ivy knocked on her frizzy head with her knuckles. "I went up to my CO, I did, and I told him 'Me and Victor are on the same team! We work together!' and he told me that we can go on the next mission together! But you'll have to hurry up and get better - I'm all set to go... well... I would be but they've still got my new watery friend hidden away somewhere. I'm rambling! Argh!" Ivy shook her head to clear an imaginery daze. "Get better and we move out, right?!"

Victor just about managed to nod through his pain and smile.

"Right." He said, shaking Ivy's hand in their new pact and grinning the whole time as she left the Infirmary.
