As most of you may notice from my DoB, I'm pushing 19 years old. I was there when Pokemon hit it big in the states, and I've been a fan ever sence.
Is is just me, or has these past couple generations of Pokemon been a bit... well, a joke? I loved the Gen 2 Pokes, they complimented the originals and expended the world of Pokemon a bit. But now... Well, most of them don't even look like Pokemon. I mean, look at the Regi's, WTF?? I guess I'm posting this for 2 purposes: 1.] Amirite?? 2.] If not, why? Am I missing something? In any case, I'm just curious. It is a discussion board, after all ;] -------------------- |

What is a pokemon supposed to look like? An animal or a bug?
I do admit that some pokemon look rather strange. The regi's for example. I like them, but they don't look like a creature that can be alive. I can try rapping my head around this, but it's not easy when you like nearly all of the pokemon. Magmortar for example. Not very many people like it, but I love it! Generation 4 is my favorite, and Generation 3 is at the bottom of the list for me. Gen 1 & 2 are both tied in the middle. I appreciate a lot of what the 3rd and 4th generation had to offer, but at the same time I see where you're coming from. Simiarly, I agree that generations 1 and 2 had the best pokemon, and even gameplay.
With each passing generation, it becomes more and more evident that they're just looking to cash in. I'll continue to enjoy them, though. Regardless. |

I agree, the first two generations were the best:3
The Pokčmon has started to get weirder over the years, that's a reason why originally I didn't want to buy a 4. gen game unless they remade any of the first two generations:3 (ironically I bought Platinum almost at the same time that SG and SS were announced XD I was tired of replaying the red version while waiting) Generation 3 was my least favorite. I'm having the hardest time picking starters there because...well I didn't particularly like either, Mudkip is weird, Treecko is weird and Torchick...okay its kind of cute but also a bit weird. That is what I normally end up with. But even there I don't like Blaziken. It also removed the clock-events like changing between day and night, making Umbreon and Espeon pretty much unobtainable. And the berries... okay this came back in generation 4 but they're quite annoying, picking one berry seems to take unnecessarily long time: You find berry- I am amazed... Pick berry? - well duh The berry was picked- oh rly?? The soil returned to the soft loamy state- wtf? Wanna plant a berry? - fine Planted a berry- ok.. its a planted berry- I know. I just planted it Want to water it with wailmer palm- yeeees You water it with wailmer palm- dumdidum The berry is happy- good And this I had to do about 3 times whenever I saw a berry-field At least in Gen 4 you can water all at once. This is why I tended to ignore the berries in generation 3, and I didn't even set the clock. When it comes to gameplay the 4 generation was the best, and 2. was best because of the Pokčmon. That of course makes me quite exited about a 4. gen remake of the 2. gen XD -------------------- Uxie Anitarig Daisuke Weasley Sceptile Rika |

3rd generation was my least favorite as well, all though I am replaying Sapphire right now. XD I liked all of the starters though. Except for Treeko. The Mudkip family as well as the Torchic family are among my favorites namean.

Lol, I know there's no set guideline as to what a Pokemon has to be, I'm just saying that when you set them side by side, Gen 1 and Gen 3, let's say, you can tell how drasticly different they are.
The Poke designs seem to be getting more and more farfetch'd [Haha, pun pun pun]. And Gen 3 and 4 seem to be having less and less in common with the previous generations. Well, just Gen 3, mostly. 4 did a good job in the department... but there was like 14 new legendaries, wtf?? That being said, I will admit that there are a few of the Gen 3 and 4 pokes that, if I were to have stumbled upon them wile playing my silver version back in the day, I would have been like "Ooooo, what's that? Let's find it's Dex info..." Some of them being; Zigzagoon Wingull Azurill Aron Wynaut and mayyyybe Jirachi. Ok, Jirachi As for Gen 4, I think they still did a sub-par job, but much better than 3. Some of the ones that seemed more like Pokemon, one's that could "fit in" easily with Gen 1 and 2 would be; Piplup's line Turtwigs line, in a way. Starly's line Mismagius Honchcrow, kinda. For that matter, all of the pre-evo's/evo's of a Gen 1 or 2 Poke. And Lucario [and Riolu]. If I were grading each Pokemon on how well it melted into the original Pokemon family, I'd have to give those two at least a 98% if not a 100%. Not sense Gen 2 have I seen something as good [not including Pokes related to and existing one] in relating back to the origin of Pokemon, Gen 1. Sorry for the rant... lol. My friends and I will debate this crap for hours, if you let us =P -------------------- |

I generally agree with you. =/ Seriously, the last generation SUCKS in my opinion. I mean, I like some of them, but you're right, they hardly look like the Pokemon we knew and loved from the beginning. They're all...ugly and futuristic and robotic. It's just stupid, really. The third generation I don't mind, but the last one? Ugggggggh. <___<

I really like gen 4 for the simple addition of wifi battling.
In terms of designs, sure some pokemon had horrible designs, but that does kinda apply to all generations, regardless of what anyone says. It's just an evolving art style really. -------------------- |

I dislike the bright colors in gen 4. I liked how mellow the tones were in gen 3, but now it's a bit eye-burning. I was reeaally disappointed to see sableye's sprite's color change in gen 4. >>

I feel the same way - that the newer generations of Pokemon are just recycling old ideas (do we really need ANOTHER caterpillar that evolves into ANOTHER butterfly? Oh, we do? ... Ok, well, carry on - and while you're at it don't forget to make a new Pikachu, there's a good lad) while seeming to ignore already existing animals, creatures and ideas that have yet to be properly turned into Pokemon. It was this grizzled old fogey stance that stopped me from getting into the newer Gens until only very recently (and I must admit that I like them now that I played them). I like most of the new Legendary Pokemon. I even like the Regis - they almost fill me with a bit of fear of the unknown since, as someone else has said, it's a wonder that they're even alive (and plus finding them was fun). But now it almost feels like being a 'Legendary' is easier than tying your shoelaces. I mean, Shaymin is cute and all, but does it really need/deserve to be a Legendary?
Am I the only one who really doesn't like most of the new Starters? Gen 1, of course, are classics and Gen 2 are really something, but I kinda felt like Gen 3's were somewhat slapped together. And Gen 4's... well. Turtwig just feels like a lame combination of Squirtle and Venusaur that doesn't make any sense. Why would I want a walking bonsai garden for a Pokemon? I think they could do good business if they just made new games with new people, new regions, new E4s, new features, new attacks, new techniques, and the four hundred and something Pokemon that they already have. There are more than enough ways to find interesting new ways to use the old Pokemon, there's no need to just make more. That being said... I still like the new games and (despite not wanting to) I like a surprising number of the new Pokes. -------------------- |

I grew up on Kanto and think the newer gens are fine. Every generation has weird Pokemon in it.

I was glad I bought an Action Replay. As soon as I got my Pokeballs I caught a Mudkip and stashed my starter in the PC. He hasn't seen the light of day since. Yeah, with the new generation, being a Legendary doesn't seem to be that special, sadly. Lugia and Ho-Oh were neat, and I do kind of like Groudon. Giratina looks cool, but I think three legendaries a region is plenty... -------------------- |

lol
I love this kind of topic. I've also been with the series since the beginning and I too am nearing 19 years old, but I think the Pokemon and games are just getting better and better. Sinnoh, imo, is absolutely incredible. The main reason for why everyone thinks the Generation two Pokemon are good is because they've got the nostalgia thing going on. People, please, look at them again. A lot of them are freaking weird. :I Wobbuffet, for god's sake. THIS WAS THE WOBBUFFET GENERATION. I almost don't understand why the second generation gets so much "OMG THIS IS SO AWESOME YOU GUYS THIS IS THE BEST GENERATION EVAR" attention, when half the Pokemon are very, very forgettable or just useless, lol. But, hey, nostalgia is powerful amirite? The third/fourthgenners look as much like Pokemon as Mr. Mime/Jynx/Dunsparce do. :/ Jesus. Does everyone forget that every generation has some weird 'uns? Nosepass isn't THAT much more weird than Geodude; it's just another animate rock thing, it just happens to have a big nose for a compass instead of a pair of arms. I honestly think that's pretty awesome and VERY unique. We had a mass of vines with... a pair of shoes... for a pure Grass type back in Kantoland; now we get a Venus fly trap. And sorry but IMO, Garchomp beats Dragonite anyday because it actually looks like it belongs to the same family as its prevolutions. xD Thirdgen brought us kung-fu chickens, mudskippers, grass dinosaurs, Absol, piranha/shark, a badass snake, the Flygon line, freaking BANETTE (most badass of all Pokemon, I mean, just... come on), and the ever-beautiful Swablu/Altaria. The legendaries helped to flesh out the history of the Pokemon world rather than just being there and having questionable importance like previous legendaries. Fourthgen brought us adorable and spunky river otters, parrots (finally! <3), sand hippos, badass sharkheaded dragons, mysterious Pokemon that may possibly be related to the distant past or perhaps another world, penguins, skunks, fiery monkeys, the aura-sensing jackallike Lucario, awesome dinosaurs, electric lions, adorable bunnies, freaking GHOST BALLOONS THAT TRY TO STEAL CHILDREN (how is that not awesome and unique?!), the Grim Reaper... The legendaries finished fleshing out the Pokemon world; we now know what happened in the beginning. Each of them has some sort of role, except for maybe Heatran lol, even if there are BAWWW TOO MANY BAWWW. Also, Platinum has had one of the most solid plots of any Pokemon game, a much more memorable cast than previous games, and Cyrus is the most terrifying of any Pokemon villain, not to mention Team Galactic the most threatening of all organizations (blowing up a lake and leaving countless Magikarp to die, anyone?) But that's not what this topic is about. XD This post has been edited by Leander: Feb 7 2010, 05:33 PM -------------------- |

Well, as stated in some previous post, not all the Pokemon have to be based on some living real life animal. The Regis were based on golems, and it's a breath of relief to have *defensive* legendaries instead of ones based on attacking. Just a bit more variety, in my opinion, and that is fine.
