Johto fandom is getting to me. In a bad way. In fact, if it weren't for the plot of Gold and Silver, Johto would be even more boring of a region than it already was! (Not to mention that 25-40% of the new Pokes that everyone is all "zomfg fanzor" over were found either in Kanto, or in Silver Cave.)
  • New Bark is just as Boring as Pallet and only slightly better than Twinleaf.
  • Cherrygrove... nothing significant here... at all. Unless you like Fishermen you can't get to for a long time. Viridian had this too... except he gave you Dream Eater. Also... no gym. This is the beginning of an awful trend- No Gym in the Second town.
  • Violet City, the first decent location in the game... still foreshadowed by far better locales, such as Pewter, which has it's museum and everyone's favorite, Brock, Petalburg, which has one of the more original gym concepts in the series, and finally Kotobuki/Jubilife which houses the GTS, the Poketch company, the TV station, AND it's a four-way. Sure, you can't go all four directions, but it makes a sort of a hub town for a while. Violet has Sprout tower, which was in dire need of Weepinbel... and the trainer school, if you find that garbage useful.
  • Azalea Town, the home of the Slowpoke Well and Kurt. This place is cool, so no comment. This is also where I'll start avoiding comparisons to other regions, as the layout becomes far less linear.
  • Goldenrod. Aye, the second most overhyped town in Johto. Game Corner is nice, but the machines in this game pretty much cheat you. Not quite as useless as the RSEFRLG slots, but still. Radio Tower... if it weren't for the Rocket takeover, this place would be seen for the boring place it is. The Magnet train is probably the only thing here I myself find useful in the least. Crystal Version changed this with the rooftop on the Dept. Store.
  • Ecruteak... I won't make a LOTR joke, but I was tempted. The clever members will figure it out. Apparently the (original) home of five legendary pokemon. Other than that... the Kimono girls, who were a fun batch of fights, but was easy since you didn't have to fight them consecutively. Because of this, I was far more interested in battling the man with the Surfing Rhydon. I guess the only reason the Kimono Girls are so popular is because of the "ZOMGEEVEEZ".
  • Olivine. Also a good place. Lighthouse was fun, but the idea of dropping down holes to save time made little sense, since it would hurt a lot. Almost as much sense as Lavaridge Gym... but that's another story.
  • Cianwood has to be the most boring place... ever. It's got a gym... and that's about it. Phails compared to other isolated towns, like Cinnabar and Sootopolis.
  • Mahogany Town. The bane of my existence. I knew from my friends (daycare center I attended) that Lickitung was found just past here... but that bloody F***ing candy salesman wouldn't let you through! Why couldn't he block the cave! Lake of Rage, which I consider a part of this town, was neat, though. Shining Gyarados was fun, as was the Ninja Hideout beneath the city.
  • Blackthorn City. The. Number. One. MOST. OVERRATED. TOWN. IN. JOHTO. The only thing this town has going for it is the "omgeezdraguns" factor. Which is crap, since (according to certain bits of character talk) you don't earn the right to use dragon types unless you can beat Clair. So basically, you can't start with a Dragon here. At all. No joke. It's also pretty humdrum for a final town. Nothing compared to Sunnyshore City and Sootopolis.
And so ends my OPINION of Johto and it's overrated-ness. Comments? Flames? Feel free.

I'd like someone to prove me wrong... at least try to. That way I can laugh when you fail, or praise you if you can turn me.

You forgot that GSC's Kanto is dull and boring.

Also, the US translation by NoA got raped.

Is this really all you can come up with? I wanted some compelling debate, not just two people shrugging my points off with just a translation complaint. I know you two can do better than this.

I just consumed over 3600 mg of sodium, I'm lightheaded.

But, seriously. I have a Japanese copy of Gold. You'd be surprised at some of the differences. Crystal got the worst of the three though.

I would have to agree with everything you said. Even though my first game was Silver it was just not that interesting of a game.

Well, I suppose the towns are pretty boring but I always find the towns semi-boring. I still really liked this game because of the length of it and of course it would be worse if it weren't for the plot - anything is boring without a plot!

I don't really know that much about Pokémon games though and I don't look into them as much as you guys do so I can't put up a good debate over this. I just enjoy playing them and that's all.

Also, I REALLY didn't know much about Pokémon when G/S came out (I only had Yellow that I got at a flea-market) so I made my parents buy me both Gold and Silver because I actually thought there was a difference between them besides just exclusive Pokémon. Boy did I feel stupid. noes.gif

I love Johto. Nothing will sway my opinion. If they get a new GSC for DS or GBA I bet it will be better. I miss and love it. ='[ But yeah, you're right about Cianwood. >>;;

Eh, might as well reply to this thread again.

GSC has a ton of beta stuff that is fun to mess with. According to many discoveries, there was going to be a Safari Zone (no joke, I hacked my way there myself), and Ecruteak was originally gonna have A TON of stuff in it. You know the special medicine in Cianwood? That was originally going to be obtained in Ecruteak. Also, the Lake of Rage was gonna be a city. Explains the beta map somebody found with a huge lake in it and why you can fly to the Lake of Rage.

So, yeah. GSC can be a bunch of fun if you like learning about the beta stuff in it.

Yeah, Safari Zone used National Park's tileset, which actually confused me a bit. Lake of Rage being a city was actually shown in magazine scans before it's release. Didn't know the Secretpotion dealio, but it's odd.

The games were always the same. Start off with one of three Pokemon, try to get all eight gym badges, fight a criminal organization and eventually overthrow them, beat the elite four of your continent, make an attempt at catching all the Pokemon in the game, get bored of it, and sell it to an eight year-old. There really weren't many differences between the games. The thing that made GSC stand out was the fact that it was truly a sequel to the previous generation because you can see what happened three years after the events in the last game.

And this is where I leave the debate... *backs away with a water hose*

No, GSC had the best pokemon.

A LOT of the favorites everyone goes gaga over are in Kanto.

Chinchou and Lanturn: Mostly Kanto.
Murkrow is only in Kanto.
Misdreavus is technically in Johto, but since it requires Kanto routes to get to, it's KANTO. (Silver Cave)
Slugma and Magcargo: Kanto.
Houndour and Houndoom: Kanto.
Larvitar, Pupitar, and Tyrannitar: See Misdreavus. (Silver Cave only barely counts as Johto)
Although, I really should be thankful, it's the only region save Sinnoh that has wild Lickitung. <3

As for the sequel bit, I would LOVE to see that concept revisited. Hell, Gold and Silver were originally titled "Pokemon 2: Gold and Silver".

Anyway, this was really just to distract me while waiting for the RP. I think my point has been made, Johto is overrated, whether GSC was great or not... I'll request a lock later.

(Not to mention that 25-40% of the new Pokes that everyone is all "zomfg fanzor" over were found either in Kanto, or in Silver Cave.)

this is the first time your rival stayed an asshole the whole game and is an actual CRIMINAL and STOLE the pokemon
  • New Bark is just as Boring as Pallet and only slightly better than Twinleaf.
All the beginning towns were boring, why single out johto for this?
  • Cherrygrove... nothing significant here... at all. Unless you like Fishermen you can't get to for a long time. Viridian had this too... except he gave you Dream Eater. Also... no gym. This is the beginning of an awful trend- No Gym in the Second town.
well...you couldn't ever battle the gym in the second town anyway until the end in r/b/y and besides that, the stuff you can't get to has always seemed(to me)to be a teaser that that's not all yet and theres way more stuff to do as you progress, and to keep you coming back and revisiting, plus you get to battle your rival for the first time here
  • Violet City, the first decent location in the game... still foreshadowed by far better locales, such as Pewter, which has it's museum and everyone's favorite, Brock, Petalburg, which has one of the more original gym concepts in the series, and finally Kotobuki/Jubilife which houses the GTS, the Poketch company, the TV station, AND it's a four-way. Sure, you can't go all four directions, but it makes a sort of a hub town for a while. Violet has Sprout tower, which was in dire need of Weepinbel... and the trainer school, if you find that garbage useful.
they didn't have gts back then, and you got the pokegear in the second town, and you added to it throughout the whole game just like in d/p with the poketch, and technology is advancing, you can't expect the past games to stand up to gts, heres your first gym, falkner, and sprout tower where you get HM05 flash, which is the biggest waste of an HM ever, they replaced it with de-fog in D/P which is worse, at least flash SHARPLY reduced the accuracy
  • Azalea Town, the home of the Slowpoke Well and Kurt. This place is cool, so no comment. This is also where I'll start avoiding comparisons to other regions, as the layout becomes far less linear.
this place was great, it makes me happy, it was one of the first towns that people constantly revisited because they never outlived their usefulness, everybody used Kurts balls(eewwww)
Store.
well, it was more realistic then, slot machines cheat, what do you want?
iirc the radio tower was where the lottery was, and it had the underground, that was always kinda fun, and way useful for happines evolutions, you get your bicycle here, the rocket takeover was cool, it kept you coming back, that and the chance to enter the bug catching contests.
I guess the only reason the Kimono Girls are so popular is because of the "ZOMGEEVEEZ".
how can you hate ecruteak, ecruteak owned, it had the burned&tin towers making it the only game ever to let you legitimately catch ho-oh and/or lugia without events XD, the dance hall had HM03 surf, and you battled the ONLY ghost type gym leader EVER
  • Olivine. Also a good place. Lighthouse was fun, but the idea of dropping down holes to save time made little sense, since it would hurt a lot. Almost as much sense as Lavaridge Gym... but that's another story.
well, you dropped through holes in several places in r/s/e and you don't complain, namely in sky tower to get to rayquaza, and in Flannery's gym...besides they got really screwed in translation In pokemon Crystal, the Battle Tower is located to the west of Olivine. In the Japanese version, players could use the mobile adapter to battle other players worldwide(sounds familiar). But the mobile adapter was removed in international releases, the US version just has a "Fight 'till you drop" system which has almost no relation with its Japanese counterpart.
  • Cianwood has to be the most boring place... ever. It's got a gym... and that's about it. Phails compared to other isolated towns, like Cinnabar and Sootopolis.
well...how much fun did you have in verdanturf? *lame voice*nuthin...yeah, didn't think so, you get an egg, repeated from g/s/c clearly, plus the contest hall, good idea, but contests suck after one or two anyway, at lest cianwood had something to do with the storyline
Shining Gyarados was fun, as was the Ninja Hideout beneath the city.
you're kidding right? this had more storyline in it than any other town, the ROCKET hideout, not ninja, and it's no wonder you hated it, if you quit after the candy salesman, you have no right to complain about the rest of the game cuz you haven't seen it, the red gyarados, Plus you team up with lance, that was fun, I bet they came || close to putting 2on2 battles in here

the first set shiny in the game, the red gyarados, which you could trade to r/b/y and it stayed shiny, proving the existrence of shinies in those games, most likely though everybody used missingno and thought the shinies were glitched graphics, and you complain?
  • Blackthorn City. The. Number. One. MOST. OVERRATED. TOWN. IN. JOHTO. The only thing this town has going for it is the "omgeezdraguns" factor. Which is crap, since (according to certain bits of character talk) you don't earn the right to use dragon types unless you can beat Clair. So basically, you can't start with a Dragon here. At all. No joke. It's also pretty humdrum for a final town. Nothing compared to Sunnyshore City and Sootopolis.
the first move deleter, extremespeed dratini, dark cave, and the first gym leader who refused to give you the badge(the old man forced her to in crystal, in g/s she made you go do a mission(get the dragon fang)), get over it, this town had tons of great things, you can't dis the move deleter, where would you be if you didn't have the move deleter?

And so ends my OPINION of Johto and it's overrated-ness. Comments? Flames? Feel free.

I'd like someone to prove me wrong... at least try to. That way I can laugh when you fail, or praise you if you can turn me.

No, GSC had the best pokemon.

No, I assure you, it has the best pokemon, they are the last of the original pokemon, everything from here on out is crappy remakes of existing pokemon, skitty and glameow=meowth, bidoof and zigzagoon=rattatta, starly=pidgey, everything else in 4th gen is post evos of existing pokemon, they went way overboard with hold item evos

A LOT of the favorites everyone goes gaga over are in Kanto.

Chinchou and Lanturn: Mostly Kanto.

so? your point? they were still in the g/s game, if you find one of those in r/b/y be sure and let me know.

As for the sequel bit, I would LOVE to see that concept revisited. Hell, Gold and Silver were originally titled "Pokemon 2: Gold and Silver".

yes, we should be able to go to kanto in that one, because the game maps are based on locations in Japan(I heard) and that johto is geographically close to kanto, sinnoh and hoenn are nowhere close...

Anyway, this was really just to distract me while waiting for the RP. I think my point has been made, Johto is overrated, whether GSC was great or not... I'll request a lock later.

why? the debate was just getting interesting.
