My favorite starter was Squirtle: easiest to raise and next to Bulbasaur is best for beating the first couple parts of the game.

My team was Blastoise, Hypno, Dugtrio, Raichu, Moltres, and Vileplume.

i cant decide between the starters because they were all fairly good starters for the time being and i raised them all at one point but i would have to say bulbasaur then charmander then squirtle

I've only played the remakes of those games. However, I must admit that out of the four mentioned, Squirtle and Pikachu seemed to be the best compared to the other two, with Squirtle being my favourite. (No offence, Flamer. ) On Leafgreen, I managed to clear the whole game using only my lv. 70+ Blastoise. How I miss him after losing my Leafgreen cartage. For some reason, I decided to ditch my starter on Firered (I think I picked Bulbasaur) and caught Pikachu. Trained it along with a Hypno and Nidoking to lv. 70 ish and faced down the elite four using only those 3 as my team. It was fun~

Charmander. Hands down.

I first started the game with Squirtle but restarted it with Charmander the following day and evolved him into Charizard on the same day.
Sure he's not the easies to start with, but he's the cutest, and the only one who STAYS cute-looking after evolving (Bulbasaur is never that cute (and if one's cuter, Ivysaur is cutest, Bulbasaur second and Venusaur not at all). Squirtle's kind of cute, Wartortle is adorable and cool and Blastoise...is freaking weird.) I guess one can argue if Charizard is "cute" but he looks good enough for me.
Pikachu got a bit boring because you can't evolve him without trading him to another game and then he won't follow you!

I really liked Charizard so I picked Charmander. My team ended up being Charizard, Dugtrio, Dewgong, Mewtwo, Pigeot and Kingler... with some changes depending on the battle... Gengar was in there quite a bit, too.

Charmander definately. Yeah the first few leaders were a pain in the backside due to me starting with a fire pokemon, but hey, the challenge was fun, and charmander is cute so I didn't really mind so much.

But when you get Pikachu on Yellow, I was even happier, because Pikachu and Charmander are my two favourite ever

I like Charmander, then Pikachu and Bulbasaur tied for second, followed by Squirtle. They're all actually decently cute, so I liked each of them. They were really strong too. Hmm...

Lvl 161 Missingno.
lvl 85 Mewtwo

I've only played Yellow, so I didn't get a choice of starter. However, of the three original starters that get given to you, Charmder is the only one I used on my team, which currently consists of: Pikachu, Nidorino, Pigeotto and Charmeleon. I'm not very far into the game. Only bought it a few months ago.

I've never played through the originals, but my team in FR is Charizard, Vaporeon, Raichu, and Pidgeot.
Recently I've taken to trying Yellow, and my team is Pikachu, as I am trying to beat it without any of the others.

Ahhhh, those three were certainly the greatest, the amount of nostalgia contained within them is of epic proportions.

It was usually a tie between Charmander and Bulbasaur. I'd always end up catching a Pidgey though, and then getting a Vaporeon or a Gyarados.

Bulbasaur, though I've no idea why. Maybe its because it was my very first, I chose it not due to it being most efficient in playing the game or anything.

But my strongest was Charmander, which, as a Charizard beat Gary up countless times, beat my cousin's lvl 100+ Blastoise and also the League people at the end of the game. The good ol' days...I miss my game. XD

My favorite starter was Bulbasaur, hands down. He is the best choice for the beginners because he can take down Brock and Misty easily and Surge can't do anything against a well trained Ivysaur.

My team is almost always Ivysaur (yes, I don't evolve my Ivysaur. Venasaur is big and uglay), Beedrill, Nidorina, Kadabra/Haunter, Hitmonlee/Hitmonchan and Kabutops/Omastar. It's a pretty random team but I like it ^^ ***

Charmander is my favorite. I always chose Charmander, regardless of how people said it was the hardest or whatever. When I was little I had so many Charizard stuffed animals and t-shirts. I was obsessed.

Bulbasaur is my second favorite because it's cute. Squirtle is cute too and all, but I never really cared much for it.

Bulbasaur was my starter in both blue and red the first times i played it, becasue i just ... like it. Though i can't for the life of me remember what my team was bar venasaur, but i think nidoqueen was in it.

Personally I loved using Bulbasaur back in the day, having him and Pikachu made my fight with Misty easy. Good way to blaze through the game. Sure I also liked Charmander as well, Squirtle ranks low on my list of Kanto Starters for some reason, I rarely used it for some reason. Pikachu was good for what it was worth. Personally I wished back then I could start with an Eevee instead of Pikachu, but oh well. At least my wish was granted in a way thanks to Gale of Darkness.

I liked Bulbasaur, though my decision was based on the colour of my cartridge. (I had Green, my favourite colour.) :P I think I liked Squirtle the best when I first got Green but chose Bulbasaur anyway... Now I like Bulbasaur. :}

Charmander and Pikachu...though in Yellow you really don't get a choice. Pikachu/Raichu is still one of the most powerful electric types, imo, and just too darn cute to boot! Charmander was great simply because of the lack of good fire Pokemon mostly towards the first part of the game.

And I really just don't care for water or grass types. =P

Pikachu was cute in Yellow and I enjoyed the fact that it followed you around, a unique twist that sets it apart from the other games.

However, I have to cast my vote for Charmander, which I raised in Red. I never did play as Bulbasaur, opting instead for Squirtle in my Blue game

Ever since then, (with the exception of Silver, the first of the Second Generation games I got, where I started with a Chikorita), I've always tended to choose Fire types as my starter, though oddly enough the Grass Types have fallen to second choice, which I did not opt for in my First Generation games. Water has been left for last choice, though that is not to say I have necessarily anything against them.

I pick Bulbasaur, just because it's so darned cute, even though he's really not very good later on. Or in tournaments.

I've never liked Pikachu, so I didn't enjoy Yellow as much except that you get a full set of starters.

And real idiots! I bet I could easily do that, with a solid hour of cirling around the last area of grass in the forest, you can have a level twenty pokemon.

I did that yesterday and had a level 19 Warturtle and Level 3 Pikachu before even going to Brock.

I loved Bulbasaur. XD He was, and still is, my favorite starter.

And, Damn, I can't find the game.

What I do remember, though, is that I had Venusaur, Chancey, Cloyster, Electabuzz (or Magneton if I felt like it), Ninetails (or Rapidash if I felt like it) and Hypno. Sometimes I used Dragonite, too.

I loved all three. Pikachu, meh. It's the kind of Pokemon that got too popular and just became the sort of thing that made me roll my eyes when I saw it. All three of the real starters were amazing, and I don't think they've ever made a better set of starters.

Stategically a Bulbasaur, because it's an efficient choice for the first two Gyms (especially first Gym because otherwise your only other choice for a Pokemon to fight Brock is a Mankey, as most of the other types are weak vs. Ground or Rock) as well as Mt. Moon against Geodudes, but true favourite-wise i'd say Charmander.

First time I played I picked a Bulbasaur, because I'd heard it evolved to it's 3rd stage at the lowest level, which translated to me as easy to raise. It gave me a pretty easy time with the first couple of gyms, too. In all following replays (and in the remakes) I chose Charmander, because I like having a fire type, and good ones that I like aren't available until much later - Growlithe, because I played Red, so no Vulpix/Magmar for me. Water-type I covered with Gyarados - I've had one in every Pokemon game I've played. Literally. I remember having an Alakazam, a Raichu, and a Fearow/Pidgeot Last one was just a random filler, I think - the team wasn't super balanced but worked out fine for me.

I used to hate Pikachu because everyone just loved it to bits. I'm the sort who tends to eschew trend-following, because it seems so much like sheep behaviour (I'm sorry Mareep!).

Bulbasaur was always my pick. I never faired too well with Charmander and Squirtle. Maybe it's just because the grass type is my favorite. And in Yellow you don't get a choice huh? I liked Pikachu, but I don't think I ever raised it into a Raichu, I raised a Nidoran Male and Nidoking became my strongest pokemon.

lol i remember i used to hate pikachu because of that...

i never really liked any of the starters because everyone was always saying ZOMG they're SOO cute! and i hate cute XD so i chose charmander because it'd become charizard... then i noticed it was so tedious to train to beat brock, so i restarted and chose squirtle... what can i say, i'm a lazy person! XD of course, when i finished the game i restarted to beat it with charmander

I loved the first time I played the game and got Bulbasaur as my starter and getting him to Ivysaur in the first day and kept using him constantly for pretty much all my battles. But I gotta say I love Charmander more. Why? Cause Charizard can fly.

I tried all of the starters and my favorite was Bulbasaur. After he evolved into an Ivysaur I kept him that way.

I don't remember my final team but I'm sure that it included:
Raichu
Ivysaur
Gengar

Its also very likely that there was an Alakazam

I had them on my computer. But now they don't work because I can't use floppy disks anymore Too bad. But, I've said pikachu. And then my team was Charizard, Pidgeot, Squirtle and Bulbasaur (love it that you can get all of the starters in yellow<3) and then Abra I believe. But I'm not sure anymore..

My favourite is charmander cause it's FIRE and Charizard looks like a DRAGON wish they were easier to raise
my team in yellow was Charizard lv 80, Blastoise lv 70, Venusaur LV60 and LV 20 Pikachu.

For me Charmander always will win in the R/B/Y era. He ended up looking the coolest imo, but the first couple gyms were difficult. And for the team *tries to remember*
Charizard, Gyarados, Kangaskhan, Rhydon, Dragonite, and, the one I have trouble remembering, Jolteon.

I think the very first one I chose was Charmander, but ever since then I would pick Squirtle, mostly to deal with Brock and then to wall Misty. Not to mention Blastoise can tear the last two gyms to shreds.

Tbh i would have liked pika to have been my starter but considering i could you get the 3 others at the start of the game i had to go with squirty, i really only used him as my poke team, with the exceptions of the legends i caught

Charmander by far, not for practicality, but because he has always been my all-time favorite . Don't get me wrong the other two starters are cool as well, but Charmander is in a completely different league. I would say it goes Charmander-Squirtle-Bulbasaur, in order of awesomeness. The thing they did with this generation, was that they managed to pull off putting 3 awesome starters into the game, that gave you a hard time choosing which to pick ('cept for me of course ). They only managed to do it again in the second generation, but the second set of starters just didn't match up to the awesomeness of the first, and then the starters have deteriorated as the generations went on (excluding Treecko, who is my second all-time favorite, soooooo cute! ).

My team consists of Charizard, Blastoise, Venusaur, Beedrill, Nidoking, Dragonite, Scyther, Arbok, Marowak and Aerodactyl (yeh, I couldn't live without the other starters, so long ranger trainer exploit ftw ). I always had a selection of my favs from the generation.

Squirtle was my very first and I focused on him for the longest time, he was my first lv. 100 and is my baby I play my Crystal game just to see him.

Squirtle, I'm not 100% sure why I chose him, I suppose I watched a friend struggle with Brock because of his Charmander.

Now Squirtle is Nostalgia for me, and is usually my water type of choice

Jeez, I don't even remember my party from when I was 8... that was so long ago. I do remember walking around in the burned down mansion place next to the fire Gym Leader (I can't remember names or anything, sheesh). However, I know that Charmander was always my first pick. I thought Squirtle looked dumb, and I was like "What?? A PLANT type??" when I saw Bulbasaur and it was like, "yeah, no, I want something that can kick ASS."
So I got the Charmander. c:
And he DID kick ass. I beat the entire game with him and he was like level 80 when I finished it. I never really bothered with other Pokemon at first, but I did have a few to teach HM moves to.

Well all the pokemon games I've played are Crystal, Silver, and Leaf Green.

My favourite starter is definetely Charmander. But that kills me because I love the other 1st gen starters almost as much too xD I hate I cannot get them all to my team in Leaf Green.

Favorite starter is Charizard of course xD Though I do really like the other two ^.^ Apart from that my team use to always be the same playing the orignal blue, red, yellow games. With the occasional switch of a few Pokemon.

Well back in this generation I'm going with Pikachu on Pokemon Yellow version because it didn't stay in it's ball. XD
Of course I'm Red all the way on this one. Well sort of because I subbed his Espeon for Dragonite XD

Bulbasaur is so cute! But I own Yellow Cartridge... Pikachu Starter is bad beacuse it can't evolve into Raichu. I went to Mt.Moon with Pikachu then I caught Clefairy and Boxed Pikachu. I guess Clefairy is my starter

Actually, you can evolve your Pikachu in Yellow. Unfortunately, you'll have to sacrifice having him follow you. If I remember correctly, if you traded Pikachu to Red/Blue and traded him back, the game would treat him as a normal Pikachu and thus would let you evolve him. Still, it would've been nice having a Raichu follow me back then. It's a good thing the Gen 2 remakes allow that with any pokemon now.

To answer the topic question, I always picked Squirtle with two exceptions. One playthrough was with Bulbasaur and another was with Charmander. I grew up associating Bulbasaur as Easy Mode, Squirtle as Normal Mode, and Charmander as Hard Mode. At least . . . until Yellow came out. That was considered "Expert Mode" until I wised up to varying movesets. Having Charmander learn Metal Claw in FireRed/LeafGreen seemed to take away the "Hard Mode" aspect of starter choosing in my eyes.

Charmander was my pick in Red/Blue, and Pikachu was the obvious choice in Yellow. I can't remember what my teams were since it was so long ago, but I can say that they were most likely Pokemon I liked. xD

Bulbasaur! It's very cute even though I'm not a fan of Venusaur and probably never will be. Squirtle is also really awesome but overall I don't like any of the fully-evolved forms of these starters. Just.. not my thing. :'(

my first ever 1st gen game was blue version. I loved charmander hands down. Always worked on getting slash before i even started to move through the forest to pewter town.
