I had just gotten a Star Piece and sold it when I realized I had enough money to buy a fossil from the back room, so I did. But then I noticed that my new Helix Fossil isn't used like a summoning item, and got a little confused. How do fossils work; basically, what happens when I press the "Use" button in my inventory?

You click use, which turns the fossil into an ancient, fossil egg of a fossil pokemon. You can only do that if you have a free space in your party.
