Global PokédeX Plus Forums _ GPXPlus Discussion _ Do you nickname Pokemon?

Posted by: Leskychuchu Jan 9 2016, 03:46 PM

I noticed that whenever I looked through the daycare offspring of my Pokemon, nobody ever named any of them, so I was curious... Do you nickname your Pokemon on here? I always do, and I find it a little sad nobody named them.

Posted by: Letan Jan 9 2016, 06:28 PM

This sounds like it was meant for the GPX+ section. General Pokemon is meant for discussing the games.

Moved.

I nickname Shiny pokemons, special pokemons obtained from friends, unsummonable legendaries (if I dont have one yet) and the ones that are good in Vs. Seeker or Battle tower/subway.

Posted by: Dr Electric Jan 10 2016, 02:22 AM

I nickname those Pokemon which I'm sure I won't be abandoning within a year. tongue.gif These mostly include shiny mons, nice IV'd mons, favourite Legends and some Novelty mons.

Posted by: shadowlarvitar Jan 10 2016, 03:09 AM

Nope. I never nickname Pokemon. I can't come up with good unique names

Posted by: Easley Jan 10 2016, 01:13 PM

Named my shinies, pokemon I need in Battle Tower/Vs. Seeker, and pokemon which I will need to be on Daycare later. grin.gif

By naming them I feel like my fondness is growing in them, it's hard to do the exchange event with my shiny pokes, but I had to. :")

I nickname my shinies, and the Pokemon I use in the battle tower. I do keep one of every legendary I have, but I'm just not paying as much attention to them bucktooth.gif

I have pre-planned nicknames for every unique species I obtain, including all 28 Unown. This doesn't always include alternate forms, but sometimes it does.

Wow. I'd be interested to see that list noes.gif

I nickname a lot of my 'mons: all my shinies, legendaries and novelties. And some others, if I have a reason in my head for it. I describe them too, but I want to go back and redo a lot of those :V

Posted by: mimmi Jan 17 2016, 11:57 AM

I'm too lazy to nickname my pokemon >_> I did in the beginning (like, AALL of them) but now I'm like... aaahhh, I'll just realese them anyways >-<

But as people above me have stated, I do try to nickname pokemon I know I won't be releaseing ^^

Posted by: kieshara Jan 25 2016, 02:42 AM

i always nickname my favorite pokemon....

and i dont give them random names... like my charmander i named Lucky.... lucky to be alive... Ash's charmander

i name them due to certain episodes in the anime

Posted by: GengyGengar Jan 29 2016, 02:50 PM

Like most of the people that have replied, I only nickname shinies and Pokemon that I like, and sometimes novelties if I can think of a cute nickname for them~

Posted by: TimelordSnowy Jan 31 2016, 08:29 PM

I think i've only nicknamed my Froakie and a couple others..... I don;t normaly nickname things unless I can think of a good name :/

Posted by: Piyoh99 Mar 20 2016, 04:11 PM

I usually nickname Pokemon when I'm not on a hatching spree. Though I almost always name the ones I have in my party. But sometimes I try to give a name from on the tip of my hat. Like naming my Manaphy.... Marine.

Say has anyone else had trouble coming up with (good) names at the start? confused.gif

Posted by: Harumi the Karamatsu Girl Mar 25 2016, 11:15 PM

I nickname Pokemon which I love and the Pokemon which my friend gave me. I love to nickname Pokemon, I even put description for them.

Posted by: Snowsky Mar 27 2016, 02:04 PM

My shinies, legendaries, battlers, and "Original Six" (the first six Pokemon I got, ever) have nicknames, but sometimes I'll nickname a Pokemon if it's special to me for some reason, or just because I feel like it.

Posted by: AregularFrankiefan Mar 27 2016, 05:41 PM

I nickname some of them [ex. Deadpool the Yveltal, Orion the shiny Togekiss], at least. Really, whether I nickname a Pokémon or not depends on my current mood + if I can think of a good name for a 'Mon.

Posted by: CrazyUmbreonLady Mar 28 2016, 12:31 PM

I do name my Pokemon every so often, particularly noteworthy Pokemon. Examples include my first Pokemon on the site, novelties, and Shiny Pokemon (if I ever find any).

Posted by: elbananero Apr 1 2016, 03:38 AM

I always put a name on a shiny pokemon, always trying to mimic the pokemon's real name, like a female Tyranitar and call her Tanya, just an example, I like this way haha konata.gif

Posted by: CaptainBootyShorts Jul 8 2016, 03:08 PM

I'm always surprised to hear when people say they don't nickname their pokemon. Like others mentioned here, I nickname them if I'm attached to them at all, though sometimes it takes me a while to come up with a good name.

Posted by: TimothyLaFave Jul 19 2016, 02:49 AM

Typically I just nick name them their original names and doubles I leave them without nick names.

Posted by: FiSouthpaw Sep 3 2016, 06:45 AM

I never nickname my pokemon. Not here and not in gmaes I own either. For me original names are as good as any and knowing how I name my characters in my stories, I doubt that I woud come up with good names anyway.

I always name my characters based on looks, like "That character looks in my head like his name should be Jonathan" and so on. If I started to name pokemons in a same way there is high possibility that my nicknames for them would be just first thing that comes in mind when I watch them. As an example, Goodra would propably be Slimy Kangaroo and Slugma would be Lava slug :p When my naming style follows that kind of pattern i guess that it's just for the best that I keep original names for them.

I like having Pokemon nicknamed. Since they're going to be stuck with me, the only Pokemon I don't nickname are usually legendaries. I don't why, it hard to come up with name for a legendary Pokemon.

Posted by: Yum Sep 20 2016, 09:41 AM

Yep Snorlax as Yum

Posted by: Gryphaena Sep 20 2016, 10:22 PM

I started nicknaming my shinies after taxonomic genuses.

Other times I'll make references to things I've experienced.

I'd like to find a shiny Shellder and evolve em to a Spiral Shellder so I can name em "Shaving Cream" after the https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G8ffkDf0ol4 by Benny Bell.

Posted by: theunreal Sep 23 2016, 12:35 PM

I do nickname my first pokemons. after that I give up and just call them whatever.

Posted by: Larzsi Sep 25 2016, 01:21 AM

I like to nickname all of my Pokemon. Sometimes their names are meaningful, but usually they're just silly. :P

Posted by: Luxeon Sep 25 2016, 12:27 PM

I nickname my Pokemon if I can come up with a good nickname for them. Usually the Pokemon I will nickname, like most others, are the ones that are special to me. For example, when I hatched my Shiny Pichu, I named her Baby. I thought it fit her very well. (:

Posted by: snapplefacts May 3 2017, 07:40 PM

i almost always nickname my mains and favorites! definitely the shinies. i actually spend the bulk of my shiny hunts working out what i'm going to name them because i'm kind of particular. even though the ones i go with in the end tend to be very basic or silly.

Posted by: Luxrayx May 5 2017, 10:34 AM

I name shinies and other pokemon I plan to keep. That said, I usually forget sweat.gif

Posted by: Dat Geechy Pie May 29 2017, 09:18 AM

I give them cool or funny names. Cool ones include Flame King (Flaming Zoroark), Leviathan (Mega Gyarados), and Blade (Haxorus). A few funny ones are Jelly (Goodra), Finally Dragon (Salamence), and Wicke (Bewear).

Posted by: Tapu Lele May 31 2017, 02:58 AM

I have never given nicknames to any of my Pokemon and it really annoys me when I get nicknamed Pokemon's in online trade shakefist.gif

Posted by: Alex Mercer Jun 1 2017, 09:37 AM

I originally nicknamed everything when I first joined this site, but now I just have too many; I reserve nicknames for shinies and legendaries.

Posted by: miu Jun 3 2017, 05:11 PM

I tend to nickname my shinies and maybe some novelty Pokemon that I like. There are just too many Pokemon going through my boxes.

ETA: Actually, also Pokemon I use in the Battle Tower, as well as some breeding pairs happy.gif

Posted by: Gigadyne Jun 4 2017, 02:49 AM

Mostly shinies, if I got a good/decent nickname for them.
Sometimes I use meaningful names, sometimes it's random, whatever clicks sort.

Posted by: Breech Loader Jun 4 2017, 05:08 AM

Nah, I don't nickname my pokemon. I'm always striving to improve their IVs so some of them don't last long in my Pokedex.

Posted by: swuff Aug 8 2017, 12:34 AM

Not usually, no. On GPX+ I'll almost never bother unless I've come up with something I consider really good. My Articuno that permanently sits in my party is named Sheer after an old character of mine, but that's really it. Some others might be nicknamed from when I was younger.

Posted by: celestialtrollestia Aug 10 2017, 05:31 AM

I nickname all of my Pokemon that I intend to keep.
I like to put puns in the nickname, if possible (see: Han Solosis, my Reuniclus, or Coca Coala, my Torkoal), but unfortunately I don't do that often, because I'm not the best pun-maker. Most of the time I call them things based off their appearance, name, type, or Pokedex entry.

Posted by: Mars Adept Enten Aug 13 2017, 08:59 PM

I try to nickname all my Pokémon if I can think of a name for them. I tend to name my shinies after their predominant color. Basically, if a shiny is blue, I try to think of a name relating to blue. Stuff like that. And I'll try to nickname Legendaries after what they're based on, concept-wise.

Posted by: StarNightingale Dec 5 2017, 06:50 PM

I name some. Some Pokemon I have now I plan on naming but haven't gotten around to yet. I'm not usually good at names and I'm also in the process of shiny hunting and I don't really have the energy to come up with names for every egg I hatch.

Posted by: AregularFrankiefan Dec 5 2017, 09:29 PM

Update: So, I went from nicknaming most of my Pokemon in general to nicknaming essentially none of them. I still name shinies/playthrough 'mons where possible, but that's really it.

Posted by: Minimanta Feb 15 2018, 08:56 AM

I only nickname them their pokedex number, so yes but not really :P

Posted by: Hearth of Fire Jun 7 2019, 08:47 AM

I roleplay a lot with my Pokemon (not on this site, i just make some Storys of them in my head) i name all Pokemon i like and which have a RP sigificance. And also all Shinys of course happy.gif

Posted by: lonelyTroubadour Aug 16 2019, 06:59 PM

Been trying to make sure I nickname them all. It makes it cooler.

Posted by: Jon Snow Apr 19 2020, 01:51 AM

Bit of a necro, I know, but I figure it is probably OK...

I started out around here nicknaming a lot, then quickly fell into just nicknaming shinies. That's how I continue and most cases, the pokémon will be named after the song I was listening to when hatched.

Similar story when I think about it for the actual games as well. With the caveat that I will always nickname everyone when doing Nuzlockes, but have also fallen into making most nicknames related to the song I was listening to.

And then I'll likely dress them up too.

I don't usually nickname mine...I'm not 100% sure why I prefer not to. On occasion I might though.
