So my friend today was playing through White and he was using Tirtouga (sp?). I advised him to get a different water type but actually found I couldn't think of anything besides Basuo. Any suggestions?

Jellicent. Water/Ghost with a pretty decent ability and defensive stats? Sign me up. Carracosta isn't half bad too. Both of its abilities are pretty useful, decent enough movepool, Aqua Jet to deny the horrible speed, all you have to take in account is the horrible Sp Defense but hell, if you get a Shell Smash in you won't need to worry that much in-game.

Probably one of the Water starters. The Grass and Water Starters are usually the best of the Grass and Water Types.

Either Samurott, Jellicent or Swanna.

They're pretty good water-types. c:

Jellicent always drive me crazy when I battle them. Get one, and Alomomola work too. Swanna are just plain pains in the necks.

I used a Tirtouga after getting EXTREMELY bored with Oshawott (well, Dewott) so I actually highly suggest tirtouga. Just make sure you teach it shell smash ASAP and Aqua Jet to offset the low speed and the defense lowerings from Shell Smash.

typole is also a good choice its not too great until it evolves but water ground type is really useful against the electric gym leader (who i had a hard time beating without typole)

Can we get an update?

There aren't any "bad" water types in this gen. Even Basculin have a few uses as speedy revenge killers. But anyway, pretty much every water type has some use. Pick whatever works best with your team. I personally like Tirtouga/Carracosta, but I couldn't fit them into my team (I had enough of a fighting problem as is), so I used a Vaporeon (post-national) and my starter Samurott (pre-national).

Samurott, Alomomola and Swanna are all good, but they lack a moveset which you would use.
Although I do use Alomomola, I dont recommend of using it, since you'll need to hunt for a good natured one and get it good evs.

What I do recommend tho is Basculin or Carracosta. You may be weirded out with Basculin, but with Adamant nature, it can be pretty good. Get the Rock Head one, and get Double-Edge, Waterfall and Crunch. It can be pretty annoying when on lower levels.
Carracosta is basically a beast. Aqua jet deals with its horrible speed, And you have access to some of best abilities with him. Rock slide, Stone edge, Curse, Shell smash, Crunch, Bulldoze... It all works.

Jellicent or Carracosta, for all reasons listed above. I personally ran a Jellicent post-game and it's a sturdy bugger. I plan on raising one later on for a rain team of sorts. Also going to run Carracosta in a Black playthrough later.

If you don't run those, Swanna's not a bad choice, just frail. It was my in-game Water-type though I ended up using my Excadrill to take care of most things.

for black/white generation i'd recommend
Swanna(water/flying), jellicent(water/ghost), and carracoasts(sp?) water/rock

For previous generations, i'd highly recommend lanturn being it's a water/electric type grin.gif

I've found my Basculin to be quite valuable. It's fast and has excellent Attack, but it can't take many hits before going down either. Basculin is good if you just want to go through a battle quickly, but if you like something more defensive I'd choose something else. I see a lot of people have selected Carracosta, which I have used as well and it is definitely great in terms of Defense.

Sen Kagemiya, eh? Yoshimori! You know him, right? No? Aww... I wanted to ask you about him. He's pretty friendly, though, so I got the lowdown on him myself. He likes dried squid, and avoids personal questions. I guess he has some family issues... His family had some problems, so he was raised by relatives. [[Yoshimori: That's his cover story?]] I asked Mr. Kurosu about it, and he just smacked me with his attendance roster. That confirms it. He has serious family issues. Just like Gen. Seems like new students always have some kind of family problem (what a coincidence!), but Sen's not like Gen at all. There is one thing they have in common ... they're both popular with girls!

Surprised no one mentioned Simipour. My White Simipour (nicknamed Mercury, for the curious) is a real powerhouse. Just be sure to teach it Scald and not evolve it until it learns Crunch. Just keep it away from Grass and Electric special-move users. unsure.gif It's got really crappy Sp. Def. And you can also teach it Surf, Waterfall, and Dive to boot.

Carracosta is actually a good choice. My Carracosta was the only reason Ghetsis's Hydreigon didn't rape me.

Fair point; Simipour is the only redeemable one of the set purely because of Scald. Seriously. Scald is THAT amazing. (And I have to agree.)
