And so... it begins... (click to show)

Bryce already hated this room.

It had been set up on the "demands" of his newest subordinate, who was neither subordinate nor new. Technically, he was Bryce's Aide de Camp, sent to him from the Maw to "help with the problems his Sector were facing". In reality, he was under the head office's orders to bring Sector B back into line. Bryce wanted to spit. They tasked him with the hardest job to do behind what was more or less enemy lines, and because he allowed his people free reign to do so, they took umbrage. Not for the first time, Bryce thought about striking out his own way.

This room was one of the many changes the "aide" insisted on. Along with the insistence that uniforms be worn at all times, the new aide had decided that mandatory weekly meetings would be implemented, in a central conference room. The old hotel had several such rooms available, and the aide had picked one with windows facing the corner street to the front of the building. It was the first major conflict between Bryce and the aide, to keep those windows covered. What Magma agent would have been able to resist attacking a room full of aqua uniformed agents visible to the world?

From that moment on, Bryce refused to call him by his name, which was Wilkins. He was the aide. The rest of the Sector followed suit, save for two.

He looked over the assembled agents under his command, some looking exhausted, having worked a night shift before being forced into a meeting. Others simply looked bored. One was stone faced, and it was on that face that Bryce's gaze lingered, and then on the seat next to him, held empty since the meetings had been implemented.

Lange sat, dutifully in his Aqua uniform, back ramrod straight, eyes wavering neither right nor left. He had claimed that very spot at the first meeting, and the spot next to him, and, as today, Kylarian silently supported him by sitting with the empty seat between them.

Kylarian doing anything in silence was cause for concern, from what Bryce had observed in her before.

The aide came in, a tall, thin man with male pattern baldness leaving a horse-shoe of hair around the back and sides of his head. His face was unremarkable save for the prominent nose, which seemed to be constantly half-stuffed, and held small, square spectacles with thick black frames. A deep blue button up shirt with the Aqua stylized A was his own concession to the uniform, a supposed compromise, since Bryce had insisted that his people be given the right to personalize their uniforms.

He set up his little laptop computer with the projector, bringing up a series of graphs and charts. Bryce did not interrupt him; for all he cared, this was an hour for the agents to either wind down from the end of the day, or to gear up for the beginning. Scant few were interrupting their duty, and even that grated against the Officer's sense of duty.

Near the end of the meeting, Bryce felt his hackles raise. He didn't believe in sixth sense, but once in a while he had hunches that, oddly, seemed to come true. This moment screamed of extreme danger, and Bryce almost stopped the meeting right then and there, but could not, stunned as he was by the strength of the feeling.

"Now, the search for Smythe, who was lost under the nose of one of our agents," Bryce sat up straighter, seeing Lange do the same. The boy's eyes narrowed, but that was the only change the boy's face had taken for the entire meeting. In the seat two chairs over, Kylarian's face took on a sharper look, like a hunting animal having caught scent of prey. "Nothing has turned up, despite our best efforts. We will be halting the active search for Smythe, effective immediately.

The entire room went silent, as if each person was holding their breath. Kylarian looked ready to lunge over the table. Lange looked at the seat between them, looked at the man, his face melting into a shadow of the relaxed smirk he had a month before, when Smythe was still safe and within reach, then, slowly, stood up.

The aide seemed to be expecting this, a protest, and opened his mouth to address it. Lange didn't give him the chance. With barely a motion to Kylarian, not an order or a threat, but a casual flick of his head toward the door, he turned and made to leave.

"You haven't been dismissed, Mr. Lange," the aide said, his voice dripping with contempt. Lange stopped at the door, looked at Ivy, either to make sure she was actually with him or to have the opportunity to hold her back if she did what Bryce expected her to do, and then, satisfied with whatever he was looking for, looked at the man.

"No, but you have been." His voice was quiet, devoid of emotion, and his face was a shadow of it's usual cocky expression. Without another word, Lange opened the door, let Kylarian out ahead of him, and stepped out, pulling it closed.

Bryce could barely hold in a laugh, and as the man sputtered, the rest of the team stood and filed out.

-----

Jay did what he had done for the entire month that Sagira had been missing.

He ran. His feet moved almost of their own accord, dodging obstacles, turning corners when there was a new direction to go, and just moving the young man forward. Videl kept easy pace to his left, and Cammy to his right, each of them having also joined him from the day he began.

The pace was a steady one, no out and out run, but not easy to keep without training or being a pokémon, or both. Jay kept it out of spite at first, and lengthened it for the same reason. Unless given a mission, or eating, or sleeping, or perfecting the special way he had devised to communicate with Cammy, a riolu who had had her vocal cords severed as part of a sick experiment, this is what occupied Jay's time. Running, or walking the city, looking for the missing person on his team.

He would never phrase it as such, but, more than trying to reconstruct his team, he was seeking the missing piece of his heart. Sagira was gone, and it seemed to have pulled half of him away, too.

The only section of town he avoided was the section where Doctor Robinson lived. There, watching over her pokémon companion and, recently, lover, was his first pokémon, Hinata, a kirlia blind since birth. Jay had been born with a type of natural defense against psychics, he'd been told, emotions running so strong in him that they would overwhelm a psychic's mind. His sister, born with a powerful telepathic ability, had suffered for years before it was discovered, and it took her teacher, Sabrina from Kanto, to find it and teach Jay how to curb it, with a type of blanket of artificial calm.

That calm was shattered, and he wouldn't risk harming Hinata, nor the injured Paladin, a kirlia like her, which had been integrated into Sagira's team. The psychic link between the girl and the kirlia had been strong, and Paladin had been injured, and was still in a coma. Thus, he stayed with the doctor, who could only make him comfortable, and Hinata stayed with her, to protect her with distance since Jay's calm could not. Siryn, Jay's misdreavus, acted as a messenger between them: Jay would not even risk contact, even at a distance.

Cammy slowed, and Jay looked back at her. Her paws came up. Sleep, she signed.

No, he returned, turning to continue. She swatted his thigh, and he looked again, not stopping until she did, Videl taking her side by stopping as well.

It gets dark. You are tired. Sleep. Jay's lips pressed together, and so did Cammy's. Cammy watches. Videl watches. We find her, if she can be found. It had taken time for Jay to get used to the constant present tense in Cammy's speech. He thought it might be a remnant of poor training in sign language. At any rate, it was evident. She and Videl would keep watch, and if Sagira was out there, they'd find her.

It was a lie, because if she was going to be found, Jay would have found her long ago, but it was a kind lie. Jay let his head drop. He was tired.

Follow me back. Then come back for your own rest when you're ready. was all he signed. Cammy sketched a salute and turned, leading the way back to the hotel.

She led him to his own room, but knew as soon as he left, he would open the door between that room and the room next door, where Sagira had last slept, crawl into that bed, and fall into a deep, dreamless sleep.

As long as he slept, that was all she was willing to push for. Leaving him in the capable wings of Lady Jay, the Swellow that perched on the headboard, and watching as Raven, the silver-brown eevee, curled up behind his knees, Cammy and Videl left the room, running into the night, on the mission their trainer had taken.

Find their missing piece, and make the Pack whole again.

Knock-knock.

“Ivy?”

Knock-knock.

“Ivy? Dinner’s almost ready… Ivy?”

Gray Peterson, rough shaven and dressed in a preppy shirt and sweater combo sighed and pushed the heavy oak door open. What he saw inside was no surprise. An empty room. Well, not literally empty but devoid of the Aqua operative nonetheless. He frowned. She had been doing this more and more lately but even knowing that she had close friends and strong Pokemon to protect her he still felt sick for her safety.

“Silly girl…” He whispered, sitting down on the soft quilted bed that had been her resting place since her dear friend had been lost to her. Of course, she slept on the floor underneath the window sill where the cool night air would whisper against her neck fondly after a hard session of searching but Gray imagined her tucked under the quilts all the same. She needed to be cared for – a girl like Ivy, depraved of loving human contact for nearly all of her life, required more than simple companionship to find her real self with humanity.

Touching the uncreased pillows with his fingertips, Gray let out a long and heavy breath before looking back at the doorway.

“You’ll be hers, now.” He told the Pokemon that was stood there, watching with obedient rapture. “She needs affection and a strong friend to help her with what she is going through right now. If she has chosen it not to be me then you’ll have to go in my place… You understand, don’t you?”

The Pokemon nodded sadly. He didn’t want to be separated from his master, nor did he want to see him cry for the human girl any longer. Too many night had been spent at the fireplace where tears fell to the hot hearth and rapidly shrivelled to nothingness – hiding the evidence of his sadness.

“Thank you, George.” Gray lowered his hands to scratch behind the Pokemon’s ears effectionately. “You were the best friend I could have asked for.”

With that, Gray raised a plain Pokeball and twisted the release mechanism, dissolving the bond between biology and technology. George shuddered, a pale blue aura twinkling around him briefly to signify the separation.

“Now go – she will be gone for some time yet.”

George nodded and turned his nose to the floor, picking up the scent of the human girl and Pokemon that had been in the room not long before. Catching to familiar hints of biscuits and gravy, he raised his head and leapt through the open window, dashing out into the night after his new master.

***

Ivy panted heavily, sweat dripping from her forehead to pitter-patter on the rooftop’s edge where she rested on all-fours with her band of Pokemon all around her. Unable to move on the ground as swiftly as the true canids, Tau the Tropius circled lazily above while offering croons of support to his teammates. It was a sorry scene. A bad of Pokemon following their sleep-depraved and sorrowful leader through empty nights that never showed any promise in locating their missing loved one.

A Mightyena’s nose probed softly at the girl’s face, a reassuring nuzzle that she shrugged away irritably.

“Two more hours.” Ivy snapped, wiping her brow with the back of her fist to sweep the sweat into the mass of matted hair atop her head. Alpha, the Mightyena, sluped his shoulders in exasperation and made a guttering growl of discontent but stretched out his back all the same – ready to run once more.

“Zel.. zel!” A panting Floatzel, named Kappa by the girl, raised his paw and staggered from the back of the group where he had been collapsed in a heap only a few moments before. Sweat rolled off his sleek body in visible streams that clearly indicated the level of energy still within him.

“Alright, you can go back to your ball.” Ivy held up the Pokeball quickly and sucked the Water-type back inside without a second thought. “Anyone else need a break?”

The question was less of a suggestion and more of a threat. None of her audience responded.

“Good. Then let’s move out.”

~

“Yoooowwl!”

Ivy dropped to all fours, facing the mysterious Pokemon that had jumped out in front of the group. It was a Growlithe – a Fire-type that she had come to respect in her childhood after battling a small pack alongside her brothers and sisters to get to an abandoned garbage can at the back of a pizza house. As she remembered, it had been a close call for both sides resulting in a begrudged sharing of spoils before either pack became too injured to continue their night’s search.

“Move aside.” Ivy ordered, waing a hand at the puppy Pokemon. It responded with a taunting growl.

“Nnnrrrrr.” Alpha growled deep in his throat, moving up alongside Ivy slowly. A crackle of static from her other side said that Beta the Manectric wasn’t far behind. Ivy nodded. A fast battle would pick her team up a bit and each could take some time to rest.

“Alpha, go! Bite ‘im!”

In a flash of shadows, Alpha raced through the dark and snapped at the spot where the Growlithe had been standing a moment before. With blinding speed, their opponent was on top of Ivy and slamming past her to connect with Beta in a surprisingly strong Take Down attack. With a yelp, the Manectric was catapulted into the alley wall where he hit hard and fell to the floor in an unconscious heap.

“Eppy!”

Like a dart, the tiny Eevee shot from nowhere, teeth flashing for the Growlithe’s throat. With a spring, the Fire Pokemon soared out of her path and straight up where he turned to rain down pelts of Ember into her back. With a squeal, the Eevee tumbled out of view behind a cardboard box.

“YEN!”

A Shadow Ball from Alpha slammed the Growlithe mid-air. With a shocked bark, the foe hit the ground hard, rolling and coming back to his feet swiftly. Following up his attack rapidly, Alpha pounced in with his teeth once more. Dodging the Dark-type’s snapping jaws, the Growlithe retreated step by step towards where Epsilon was lying in wait…

*This Growlithe is really strong… A perfect addition to the team to help find Sagira…*

“VEE!” Epsilon tore through the box in one dash, the speed of her Quick Attack taking the Fire Pokemon off-guard. He was hit fiercely in the side but still refused to go down, back to all four paws in a matter of milliseconds before leaping back and away from both Mightyena and Eevee and spitting a ball of flame between them.

*A miss?!

Even as Ivy thought it, the incendiary exploded, showering both of her partners in flaming missiles that pinned them down completely. Ivy’s eyes widened. This Growlithe really was strong. Catching it would be difficult… unless…

BAM!

“Tau!” Ivy exclaimed, wind rushing through her hair as the Tropius crash-landed right on top of the Growlithe with an impromptu Body Slam. The poor Pokemon underneath him yelped and whined pathetically as he tried to escape but after a few moments the noises of struggle subsided.
Looking bashful and more than a little embarrassed, Tau stood up and moved away to revealed a very dazed-looking Growlithe. From there, the capture was a simple one.

Tired and with exhausted Pokemon all around her, Ivy clipped her new Pokeball to her belt and began to walk home. Another night of searching had been fruitless but in her mind the unerring mantra that had placed itself there when Sagira had gone missing still rang louder than ever.

“We’ll find her tomorrow. We’ll find her tomorrow. We’ll find her tomorrow.”

Jay sat on the bed that had once been Sagira's, for however short a time. There was a book in front of him, but he didn't even look down at it, his hands flowing through gestures and forms easily, as if he'd practiced all of his life. In truth, he had only begun learning for slightly longer than a month.

Across from him, sitting on the end of the bed, Cammy sat, her forepaws running through similar motions. Jay watched her hands when she gestured, and answered with hand positions of his own. They were communicating in sign language.

Cammy sometimes had difficulty making herself understood, since the digits on her paws were not as long as a humans, but slowly she taught him the compensations she'd worked out, until Jay was following the gestures easily, sometimes more easily that he might have with other humans.

Sitting with him now were Raven and Videl, bout on either side of him. The warmth of their bodies (heat being more fitting for Videl) was often a comfort in the night time, but lately they seemed to be more prone to being near him always. Raven would look up at him with those deep blue eyes. Just now she did so, her eyes deep pools, reflecting Jay's hidden grief, perhaps with her own. After all, Topaz had also been taken.

Lady Jaye perched on the back of a chair, her own expression as blank as the one on Jay's face, though, from time to time, she looked forlornly at his shoulder, where she would perch before she had evolved. Now, at more than twice her original size, she was much too large to do so.

Two green forms scuttle past on the wall behind Jay, their yellow legs almost a blur. Videl's eyes were tracking them coolly. They were no threat, of course. Videl merely envied that they could run on the walls and she could not.

The pair stopped and walked, slowly, to either side of Jay's head. They were both spinarak, one slightly larger than the other. Their heads turned to look, first at Jay, then at Cammy. There was no change of expression on their faces, consisting of large, black eyes and pincers instead of mouths. However, on the back of their thorax, where there were black hairs mingled with the green, there was an expression of curiosity as if rendered in nothing but dots and lines: Two eyes, with a line-mouth tilted as if in contemplation.

Jay glanced back, briefly, as he signed, then, just as he finished, said, softly," Stringer, Stinger. Give it a rest, please." The comment was not angrily delivered. There was no emotion to it at all. The two crawled off of the wall, their back hairs shifting, the black line-mouth turning down in an expression of disappointment. The expression came again when Jay's fingers lightly stroked around each small horn on top of each small head.

Cammy was concentrating on a particularly complex phrase when her head jerked up, and she looked back and to the left a full three seconds before the knock sounded. Jay, too, looked toward the knock. It was a little back from the corner in the room: Someone was knocking not on the door to the room where Jay was, but to the door of Jay's room.

Jay ignored it, until a new sound came. A key turning in the lock. With an audible sigh, he stood up, Cammy, Videl, and Raven standing with him, Stringer and Stinger rising on their six legs, and Lady Jaye puffing up her breast feathers.

The door between the rooms clicked, then opened. Jay had expected to see Bryce eventually. He didn't expect to see the brown haired girl with him, holding a key; His daughter, Melissa.

Jay hadn't seen her since he and Sagira had been on the run, the first time, when Dawson had threatened her and then declared her a rogue when they had defied him together. Melissa had been an unfortunate victim of Jay's manipulations, because she worked with sensitive information in Dawson's employ. Things since had been cordial, but hardly friendly between the two, mostly because Jay had felt guilty for deceiving her.

Now she stood before him, keys in hand, looking at him as if she would rather be anywhere else. Her boss, her father, stood behind her, and the look on his face was something that Jay had never seen. Resigned, almost, but stoic, as if he'd put on a mask he seldom ever used.

"I have an assignment."

Jay looked at him, then nodded. "Good luck on it, then, sir."

The word sir caused a slight reaction, a narrowing of the eyes and a slight wince that Jay only saw because he was now staring right at Bryce. The man's mask didn't slip, but there was a change.

"I have an assignment for you, Lange," he said, again with that odd unknown quality in his voice. "You and Kylarian."

Jay stood and stared, then narrowed his eyes. "I don't think I'm fit for duty, si-"

"It's been a month, Lange," Bryce ground out, and that was, at least, closer to the Bryce Jay had come to know. Jay's brow quirked.

"My team isn't complete, sir," he said in return. "Ivy doesn't even stay here. We need time."

"I don't have time to give to you anymore, Lange. I gave as much as I could." Melissa looked back at her father, then at Jay, her eyes pleading. Then Bryce sighed. "Look, you two need to get back on your feet. Think of what this is doing to Kylarian."

Jay saw a flash of red, and he struggled to contain the emotion, but, as had been the case since the day Sagira had been taken, he only partially managed.

"Oh, and things haven't happened to us while following orders. Never happen. Ivy didn't go through hell and get drugged out of her mind. Sagira didn't get nearly raped by her commanding officer. I di-"

"All of that was under other commanders, Lange," Bryce said, his voice remarkably calm in the face of a subordinate's anger.

"So let's talk about you, sir. You didn't send up out on a mission without giving us all of the information? You didn't withhold information about a man who may well have wanted to harm us? You didn't send me, personally out, untrained, on a mission I and my partner were expected to fail at?"

"That is enough," hissed another voice, and both Jay and Bryce looked at Melissa. Her eyes were narrowed, her face closed, and her glare was sharp enough to draw blood.

Bryce cut her off. "The dossier is on the desk in your room. Take the mission, or get out. That's all." With that, he turned, walking stiffly out of the room and the one beyond. Jay watched him go.

"He didn't deserve that," hissed Melissa. "You don't have a corner on the hurt market." Jay opened his mouth, but she cut him off. "I know it's raw, Lange, but don't take it out on him." With that, she turned on her heel and stalked out, hair bobbing up and down in time with her angry stride.

Jay sat on the bed, feeling Videl and Raven pressing to his sides, and sighed. After a moment, he pulled out his cell, pressed the number three for two seconds, and watched as Ivy's number dialed.

After a moment, Jay's voice came, from a dry throat. "Ivy." He sighed, swallowed, and made his decision. "We have a mission. We'll have to work it in while we search."

Ivy turned and ran from her opponent, dashing out of his longer reach and right at the wire mesh that made up the Cage. Sweat and blood stung in her eyes but so far she was only suffering a bruised rib - her limbs had successfully dodged the brute's massive fists earlier in the match. Throwing power to her legs and kicking out hard she struck the arena wall and turned back sharply, raising a flat palm before her. The six-feet mountain of muscle audibly gasped just as she made contact, slamming his head back in a tight grip and dragging it all the way to the ground with her momentum. He crashed down in a sweaty, unmoving heap even as Ivy span away from him to slam into the other side of the Cage and drop to her knees, panting heavily.

The bell sounded. The crowd roared.

"Ivy!" Gray's worried cry at the edge of the raised platform was slightly dulled by the uproar around them but she could still hear him clearly enough to know he was concerned. "Ivy, are you alright?!"

"Fine, Gray Man." She panted, turning her dirty, blood-smeared face towards him. She didn't smile - merely nodded acknowledgement. "Just fine."

*****

Back at Gray's mansion, Ivy sipped the meat broth that the cook had slid in front of her slowly as her host stitched a split in her scalp closed.

"I still think you should go to a hospital." Gray fretted, snipping the final suture into a lop-sided stitch just behind her hair line. Ivy patted her washed hair down over the minor injury and flicked his hands away with her free hand.

"S'all fine." She muttered, slurping a hot tasty mouthful of broth back through her teeth and swallowing gratefully. She looked up at his wide, pain-stricken eyes and let out a long breath. "It's fine." She repeated, reaching out to stroke back his own curly hair that had managed to grow all the way to the bottom of his ears. He visibly softened at her touch but tensed again as her attention went back to the soup.

"Master Peterson?" A man in dark livery tapped lightly at the kitchen door. Gray waved him in. "Miss Ivy's telephone..." The staff member offered up the mobile phone that Ivy had obtained in her last mission with The Pack to the pair. It was vibrating in his palm. Ivy snatched for it, broth forgotten before her.

"Ivy. We have a mission. We'll have to work it in while we search."

Jay's voice was dry and strained. Ivy blankly listened. Another mission. Their first one since... Since...

"I'll be there within the hour." Ivy confirmed, hanging up quickly and sliding her chair out from the dining table. She took a step towards the door but a hand grabbed her firmly around the wrist.

"Be careful." Gray told her. His eyes were still painful but they had also narrowed. "I can't stop you, Ivy. Just... Just be careful."

"Gray Man." Ivy blinked at him. Why did he care for her this way? What had she done to invite this? They were not the same pack... He was not even in Team Aqua... "Don't be such a Silly." She pulled her arm free without a further protest and rushed to meet Jay.

It was Bryce's office, but he was sitting on the wrong side of the desk. It was not lost on him what the Aide was trying to do. He had asked to use the office, because it was, after all, his mission that was being undertaken to get Lange and Kylarian back on track. From anyone else under Bryce's employ, it would have been approached as a favor, and handled as a privilege. From this man? Bryce could see the hungry look in his eyes as he settled his boney ass in Bryce's chair.

Worse, he took the coffee cup Melissa had bought and modified for him and put it on a bottom shelf.

Lange walked in, followed closely by Kylarian. Where Lange was a picture of despondency, Kylarian seemed as if she were a charged dynamo. Lange flopped into a chair and slumped into it, resting his hands on his chest. Ivy stayed by the door, almost at attention. Bryce, however, seemed to see her quiver in her restraint. She wanted to bolt, not out of fear, but out of the desire to do something.

The Aide smiled, showing no teeth through his lips, and Bryce wondered if the man was smarter than he looked. Kylarian seemed to take after pokémon more than humans at times, and one did not bare one's teeth to a pokémon, unless that pokémon trusted you. Ivy trusted very few. Smythe was one. Lange was probably another. Beyond that, Bryce had no idea: He very much doubted he had her trust yet.

But, no, the smile was not one of deference or caution: There was too much of an air of smugness in his eyes for that. He saw himself as a superior. And, it seemed from the way his smile widened when he regarded Lange, that he saw Bryce's top team as troublemakers, who needed to be brought down to earth. And Lange was right where the Aide wanted him.

C'mon, kid. Snap out of it.

"This mission," said the Aide, folding his fingers together as if in prayer and leaning forward, "is simple. There is a new business in the shopping district which has commandeered an entire building, a building that is far too large for a pretzel shoppe. I want this building investigated as thoroughly as," he paused, looking at the two of them, unimpressed, "you can manage."

-----

Jay sat slumped in the chair, his eyes hooded, not taking them off of the eyes of the aide. His posture sang out to the world he was not interested in any of this. It wasn't a lie, and it wasn't a deception, but neither was it quite what it seemed.

The man behind the desk was an anomaly, not there to lead, but obviously wanting to be. Why was Bryce giving him so much leeway?

When he made his first disparaging remark, Jay found himself reaching back, slowly he reached back and touched the inside of Sagira's forearm, and she slowly calmed, her eyes dancing with fire and tapped Ivy's hip, getting her attention. With a slight shake of his head, he told her not to react, hoping she could read him. This guy was up to something, and Jay wanted to know what.

"You will be as silent as possible. If you get caught, Shadowcat moved ahead as Jay hissed her name, plucking the pokéballs from the waist of an unsuspecting guard before looking back with a sly, savage grin we will deny your existence within our ranks. You will take only those pokémon you need to successfully complete the mission. And you will wear your Aqua uniform at all times." He smiled, that sick little sycophantic smile, looking directly at Jay. The meaning was clear: This is what you get for making a fool of me at the meeting.

Bryce, however, bristled. "Now wait a damn min-"

Jay stood, faster than either Bryce or the Aide seemed to expect him to. "Is there a time limit," he asked, his voice still low and dry. Bryce deflated, but the Aide seemed to perk up.

"No, not this time." He waved a hand, looking at papers on the desk as if it were his office. "Dismissed."

Jay said not a word. Technically, Ivy outranked him, and it wasn't until she moved to leave, flinging the door open with a growl, that he, too, left. He stopped just before leaving Bryce's field of vision, caught his boss' attention, and rolled his eyes. Bryce gave a slow smile as Jay left.

"Wear th' uniforms!" Ivy was still bristling Catseye walked briskly, her hips swaying back and forth, the form fitting contours of her bodysuit leaving little to the imagination. She turned to look over her shoulder, a come-hither look in her eyes her fingers flexing open and closed. "How're we s'posedta be sneaky in that?"

"Don't worry about it. Bring a change of clothes." Jay started thinking. Despite his intentions, the thought of a mission was bringing back a level of energy he hadn't felt in over a month. "We'll do this our way, whether he likes it or not."

In her Aqua uniform for the time being, Ivy stood alongside Jay in the central district, a light breeze stirring her hair which had been amassed at the back of her head in a wild spray held by a thick elastic band. In all her time with Aqua Ivy had worn the uniform, albeit begrudgingly, and had developed her wear from the shorts-and-tee with no shoes to an all-in-one dress that ended far before reaching her knees complete with Aqua-mark at its hem. Tall boots that came to the bottom of her knee had replaced her bare feet that had finally healed from all of the deep cuts and grazes that she used to receive out on missions. She wasn't the child that joined the ranks all that time before. She was a young woman with the rank of Elite.

She held back a tear. For the first time in a long time it wasn't for her dear friend Sagira. This one was for herself - what had she become?

A keening whistle passed through the street, followed by two short barks and a light howl.

"No sign of Magma personnel in the vicinity of the establishment." Ivy reported to jay, tilted her head slightly. "Beta says we are clear to enter from the west service entrance and Alpha confirms the south staff entrance is clear but locked from the inside." *That wouldn't be a problem if Saggy was here...*

A soft rumble from the newest member of Ivy's team caused her to look down. The Growlithe's large eyes had wrinkles at the corners - he was older than the rest of the group - but they shone with vitality and purpose. He pitched a soft moan and rolled his ears flat.

"Omi can hear Kappa from the other side of the building - the sewer doesn't lead to any underground entrance that he can find, nor is there sufficient space in the tunnels for us to investigate, either." She relayed the message, thanking her team mate with a scratch on top of his head. His tongue lolled out appreciatively. "And with Tau taken away, the roof isn't an option." Ivy hissed that last, her fingers twitching at the bare space at her Pokeball belt. "Filfy, stinkin'..."

A passing motorbike drowned out her final curse, probably for the better.

You will take only those pokémon you need to successfully complete the mission. Had not meant that Ivy and Jay would make the decision themselves - this Aide of Bryce's had been the one to decide that. Ivy's blood boiled in her temples. Her jaw ached from the pressure she ground between her teeth and her neck stiffened until it felt like someone had replaced her flesh with granite but a cool glance from Jay calmed her.

She breathed deeply. He probably wasn't aware but he still smelled like her.

"What now?" Ivy asked impatiently. "We get sneaky and disguised like normal? I don't thinks even a pretzel store would let us in like... this..."

Jay allowed his vision to pass over Ivy again. At one moment cool and crisp, giving her report like a seasoned soldier, then, suddenly, twitchy and unsure, as if she'd suddenly found herself in a strange place but was determined to go on. Jay's lips pressed together, not at any action or lack thereof from Ivy, but at the situation they'd found themselves the unwilling participants of. Jay found himself once again comparing the what was of Sagira's presence to the what is of her absence, and the what could be forming like an icy regret at the pit of his stomach.

Sagira could help Ivy with whatever transition the semi-feral girl had found herself in, much better than the grieving Jay could, or even could have. Sisters had that way.

With that realization came the realization that, since Sagira had been gone, Jay had been extremely selfish. Ivy had to miss Sagira as much, possibly more, than Jay did, and yet he had wallowed in his own self-pity. They both loved Sagira, in different ways deeply, and Jay hadn't thought once to reach out to Ivy.

He shook his head rapidly. Now wasn't the time. They had a mission, diminished teams or not.

Jay actually smiled, or at least gave an expression much more like a smile than he'd managed lately. When the Aide had stepped forward to chose the pokémon that the pair would take, he'd thought that Ivy would rip the Aide's face off with her teeth. Evidently, whatever reconditioning she had gone through had won out, forcing her to bow to authority, despite the threat of having to leave any of her team behind. Jay had received no such reconditioning.

The man had stepped forward to physically remove the pokéballs from their belts. Ivy had let him, but Jay had grabbed his wrist before he could make contact.

"I'd appreciate it, sir, if you didn't go grabbing my balls."

He'd heard an unsuccessfully stifled laugh behind him, and had looked over his shoulder to see Melissa had entered the office. He turned back just as the aide's face had begun to turn red: Jay was not holding the wrist with an over amount of force, yet the aide could not move his hand forward.

"Mr. Lange," he hissed, holding in his anger, "are you defying a direct order?"

Jay looked him in the eye, betraying no hint of emotion. In truth, he felt nothing, neither anger nor acceptance for this man's decrees. It was a matter of propriety that he not be allowed to remove Jay's pokémon from his belt.

"No, sir. I would just prefer that you leave my balls out of your hands."

"I need to assess which pokémon you may take with you."

Jay would have protested, in better times. Instead, he pulled a pokéball from his belt. "Videl. A houndoom. Her dark typing allows her to be stealthy despite her size, and she is my most experienced battler."

The aide considered it. "You may take her."

The ritual went on like this for the rest of the pokémon on Jay's belt. In the end, he was left with Cammy, Raven, Stringer and Videl, while Lady Jaye and Stinger were to be left, the former because he felt that flight would not be needed, the latter because the Aide felt that two spinarak were extraneous. Jay barely managed to roll his eyes.

Now, in the area from which Ivy had sent her truncated team to scout, Jay was left to ponder their course of action. They couldn't split up: communication would be impossible. Ivy could understand her pokémon through practice and being raised by one, and Videl could also understand them, and hear the softer growls and yips that would be necessary for the pokémon to communicate without giving them away. But without Hinata there to translate, Jay had no way of understanding, let alone communicating back. Radios were out: Human voices couldn't possibly get low enough to escape all detection.

Jay considered the information that Ivy's team had relayed. The South entrance was out; If Sagira hadn't been gone, they could have picked the lock, and Jay would have suggested it: One doesn't hide things behind an open door. The front door would cause huge delays, but would be better than nothing. The west might be locked as well, but worse it would be guarded. The sewers were out.

"We have two options: Change, go through the front, and bluff our way in, or the roof."

Ivy was already shaking her head. "No roof. No flying types."

Jay graced her with a half-smile, glancing down at her. "I don't need them, and if there's a fire escape, neither will you. If need be, I can carry you."

He paused, squinting, then pulled off his backpack. The blue aqua shirt wore like a vest: two long sides that crossed over each other like the jacket of a gi uniform, but made from a much thinner and softer cloth. It hung down a few inches past his waist, and had the white stylized A of Aqua on both sides of the jacket, so that the emblem showed no matter which side had been crossed in front. Jay pulled the tunic off, revealing a tight undershirt, and slipped into a regular brown button up shirt. The only part of his uniform that he kept on, besides his pants, which had no distinguishing features, was the forearm bracer he'd ordered from a costume supply shop the day after he'd caught the spinarak twins. It was a yellow bracer with a wide lavender stripe around the middle circumference, made of a semi-stiff leather. He had two of them ordered, but only wore the one on his left arm, for Stringer to rest on when he was out. They were styled after the bracers of the Ariados' costume, Jay's favorite super hero.

Finally he looked at Ivy. "You're the ranking officer, Iv. What o you think we should do?"

*What do I think?*

In all her time training with Team Aqua, Ivy's role within the organisation had been glossed over on the whole. She had risen through the ranks relatively smoothly and even been sent to captain a three-man squad including Jay and Sagira before with disastrous results. Well, that was only half true. She hadn't been in control. Back then, her mentor and supervisor - Officer Crichton - had been drugging her to make her a more efficient member of the team. Now? She still outranked Jay, if only by a scribble on a piece of paper, but she didn't feel like his superior officer.

While Ivy did feel responsible for the actions of her Pokemon team, her human one was another matter. There came a point with humans that ranking no longer mattered and friendship took over. Humans that were friends were completely equal, unlike Pokemon who still held individual dominance in a pack despite their closeness.

Ivy shifted uncomfortably. This wouldn't have been necessary if Sagira had been with them.

"Roof." Ivy peered upwards at the towering building. "The roof is the safest entry point to avoid detection but to get up there..."

Ivy knew exactly what Jay was capable of with his abilities of parkour - she had seen it first hand - but she wondered if he could really carry her and do all of those fancy moves. He was bigger and stronger than her, arguably just as agile on level ground but certainly faster in a dead sprint. Ivy just had him on endurance - that's what you get from running with a pack of canine Pokemon almost every day of your life - but there was no way she'd be able to get to the roof the same way as him without some sort of help.

"You lead the way and I'll do my best to copy what I can. If there's stuff I can't do, we'll sort it somehow."

She began to roll up her dress.

"We'll just have to try, Jay-man." Ivy's dress, already extremely short, was now hitched over her hips. Underneath, plain black hipster panties were clearly on show at the top of her toned creamy legs that were covered in the shiny white flesh of scar tissue from countless numbers of past battles. "And I didn't bring other clothes so we's gonna have to be quick else the police get me..."

Jay blinked at her.

"Well, then? Let's get moving!"

Jay looked down at Ivy, his brows rising slowly. She would follow? Try to copy his movements? Was that possible?

And with her skirt hiked up like that?

It wasn't that he didn't believe Ivy capable of it, it was that, at best, it took some practice. Jay had been doing parkour for years and he still had to practice something new, unless it was done in the heat of the moment. For some reason he'd been very lucky when it came to things he had to do in times of duress.

Still, Ivy was... well, in short, amazing. During their times together Jay had never failed to be impressed with the short girl's abilities. From the beginning, when she'd seemed little more than a pokémon in human form, he knew there was a lot of power in that tiny package. Now, the one benefit of what seemed to be nothing more than forced personality manipulation, she had a sharp mind to back it up and temper her... temper.

He shrugged. "OK, Ivy. I'm going to look for the easiest way up." He took in her wrinkled nose and smirked a bit, still looking up. "I'd be doing that even if I were going alone. It's best not to waste strength if you don't have to."

He circled the building for as far as he thought it was safe. There were no patrols, according to Ivy's scouts, but there were guards on at least one door. Ideally, it would be best to go through that door, since there would only be guards if there was something important to guard, but the chance they'd raise the alarm was far too great.

Was he thinking in circles? He could have sworn he'd had that same thought before...

Jay sighed. If Sagira were here, there wouldn't be all this decision making. If they didn't all agree on a course of action, she'd run off half cocked and pick a direction, and at least something would be done. Jay nodded.

"The building's too small for fire escapes, it seems. Or they don't care. Either way, there aren't any on this side. But see the window ledges? They come out quite a ways, and the edges of the bricks are pretty deep." He nodded. "But we're not going to go up that way unless we have to."

"We ain't?" Ivy said, looking shocked. Jay gave her half a smile as he reached to his belt bringing Cammy off of it and out of her ball.

"Nope. See that storm drain? It's industrial sized. They're usually pretty strong. Watch." He looked at Cammy, using sign language to give her his commands. Watch me, then watch Ivy. If she starts to slip, help her. You can catch her, if she falls, right?

I catch her, of course, she signed back, looking at him intently. I catch you, as well. You fall, and I catch you.

Jay smiled at her. That won't be necessary. He turned and began to climb up the drain, hand over hand.

As he climbed up the drain pipe, he could see the places where he would next put his hands as brighter than the rest of the area, as if someone had turned a low light on underneath the area. He had long since stopped trying to make sense of it. The "light" was very seldom wrong.

He was a little surprised when the light stopped halfway up the pipe and jumped to the sill. Rather than jump himself, he reached up and tested the pipe. It was loose, loose enough to give under his weight. He jumped to the sill, hanging on and peering into the ceiling. Normally this would have been done quickly, but he wanted to make sure Ivy saw what he was doing.

His arms, however, were getting tired, so he continued up, skipping back to the drain when his inner guide indicated it was safe. Before he climbed over the edge to the roof, he checked it for guards. There were none.

Turning, he knelt on the edge and waved Ivy and Cammy up.

"Everyone, return." Ivy recalled her Pokemon as they reassembled in the alley at the side of the Pretzel Shop.

Ivy watched in silence as Jay began his ascent of the drain pipe. His fingers gripped tiny crevices and his toes plunged into the shallowest of cracks around the back of the pipe as he went, those muscles in his arms visibly expanding to grant him enough strength to move himself around such tiny hand and footholds. Ivy had found another reason to respect her teammate once more. Not only was he a very capable in almost any situation, whether in disguise or not, but his physical prowess was nothing short of incredibly impressive.

Jay paused momentarily some way up the building, testing the pipe above him with one hand. Just how he managed to stay attached to the wall was beyond Ivy - one arm to support most of his weight!? Then, even more surprisingly, he found the grip and power to leap upwards and latch onto a windowsill just outside of his normal reach. Another burst and Jay was at a higher section of piping, grappling with the smallest of purchases before he swung over the top of the building and onto the roof.

Ivy gulped.

"Here goes..."

Jay's Riolu, Cammy, nodded reassuringly to her. She nodded back and set her jaw.

It turned out that the hand holds were not Ivy's biggest difficulty on the climb up the drain pipe. Luckily for her, her small stature and slim hands allowed her to slide almost her entire palm around the pipe which gave her a much tighter grip on the makeshift ladder than it had allowed Jay. Unluckily for her, the wall was not something she was accustomed to when it came to finding a suitable foot hold - the brick was too rough for her to go barefoot but her boots were too blunt and rounded with little forward-facing grip that would make attaching herself to small nooks and crannies pretty difficult.

Even so, she climbed. Far slower than Jay, Ivy reached the loose piece of pipe and was already panting. Her shoulders ached from taken nearly every ounce of her body weight since her legs were near useless in that situation. She reached up.

Cammy's paw tapped urgent from below Ivy. The girl froze, returning her grip to the pipe.

"That part is loose." Jay's hushed voice informed from above. "You'll have to jump to the sill, like I did."

*Ugh*

Ivy peered up to her directed target and nearly fell from sheer shock. The sill was much further from the pipe than she had initially anticipated. From the ground, it had seemed to be only a foot or two from the drain but in fact it was nearly double that when it was right in front of her. How Jay had managed it, she'd never know - that jump was crazy! Crazy but necessary.

"You're nearly there, Ivy." Jay's voice from above again. "You can do it."

*Ugh*

With encouragement like that, Ivy couldn't just turn around now and go with the front-door option. She braced herself, took a deep breath, said a deep prayer to anyone who was listening, and threw herself upwards and across.

<Sckr--kk skk!>

"IVY!"

Ivy's boots floundered against the brickwork as she pushed and before her body even had the opportunity to move upwards, she was falling. Her arms reaced towards the sill as it fled from her, stretching up and out like desperate blades of grass reaching for the light. Her breath caught in her throat - realisation hitting her as her hair began to come back past her face in the wrong direction. She would surely break something in the fall... Possibly her legs...

Out of nowhere, Cammy's paw clamped on Ivy's hand as she fell past, snagging the girl in a tight grip before the fighting Pokemon gave a mighty tug upwards.

*Impossible!!!*

And with that, Ivy was flying back towards the sill that had eluded her. Ivy's fingertips reached out and latched on tightly to the narrow ledge, her legs slamming against the wall as she struggled back and forth to regain some sort of balance after her close call with a hard cementy destination. Gritting her teeth hard, she fired everything in her exhausted arms and pulled herself upwards to kick a leg out to the side and grip the sill. With three limbs supported she balanced herself shakily and made her way back to the drain. There was that jump again.

Despair filled her. Jumping back was going to be easier than to the sill itself but the climb would be just as tiring and she didn't have much left in her to fight with. She looked up to find Jay watching her closely.

"Catch me, Jay-man." Ivy said firmly, focusing her attention back on the pipe. She'd have to do it her own way. And that meant using her legs. "UNGH!"

With a powerful jump, Ivy kicked her leg out as she approached the pipe and rebounded from it, using what grip her boots gave her, to perform a double-jump upwards without using her hands for support. Instead, she threw them up after the second contact and towards her teammate.

"Crap, Ivy! How much gravy did you have this morning?!" Jay groaned as he fought gravity to drag Ivy up and over the edge of the roof. They tumbled away from the edge in a tangle of arms and legs, Ivy panting heavily as she lay exhausted across Jay's chest. Cammy joined them moments later, not even breathing heavily from her own exertions.

"Har-dee-har, Jay-bir... Jay-man." Ivy quickly corrected herself but she saw the flicker in Jay's eyes before she could take it back. She clambered off him quickly and moved away, an uncomfortable silence settling between them. She stared at him through mourning eyes, unable to speak an apology despite every bone in her body willing her to do it.

"L..L..Let's get moving." She finally got out, rolling her dress back down to her knees and adjusting her Pokeball belt.

He could see the regret in her face as soon as his eyes snapped to hers. She had called him, in some odd slip of the tongue, the same name Sagira would call him when she was particularly happy with him. And Jay had, hearing it, smiled before her realized that it was Ivy saying it.

Her eyes expressed deep regret, but even more oddly was the brief shimmer of color in them. More than her irises, this color wavered in the sclera of her eyes, painting them briefly a deep blue with jagged yellow streaks, leaving the grey of her irises untainted. It disappeared as soon as he noticed it, and Jay set his mouth into a grim line. Great. I'm going insane.

He reached out and lightly ruffled her hair, a gesture he'd usually torment Amber with, and gestured toward the door. "All right, let's head in." To Cammy, to whom he turned before setting for the lone door on the rooftop, he signed, Good work. Thank you.

Cammy stared after him, her heart pounding harder in her thin chest. This feeling... it was new. No, not new. Incredibly old. So old she'd forgotten she'd ever felt it. So old that it had been buried in the miasma of pain and humiliation and other feelings, even older than the periphery feelings which were the borderlines of her experience with the men who cut and poked and prodded. Who would stick twenty needles in her eyes and then asked her what she saw.

Or, at least, that was how it felt, at times.

She followed the two humans, but felt her mind distracted, and quickly ascertained why.

The feeling, the gratitude of knowing her trainer was proud of her, that he had expressed pride to her... for her, the reference for that was not in the ever-present memory, was not something she felt had always been. It was in the past, deep in the past.

For the first time, she had to rediscover the meaning, for her own reference, of "was".

That's kind of sad...

She gave a start and looked around herself, but a presence stopped her. No! I'm not there. Don't tell Jay I'm talking to you, he'll... The sentiment immediately took a nose dive, but Cammy tasted the strong bitterness of resentment before it did.

I understand. Cammy hesitated for a while, then, timidly, thought again. You hear?

Yes, Cammy, I heard you Though she moved, Cammy waited. There was only one reason Hinata spoke to her this way: The message was for her to know, and her alone. Otherwise the loud-minded ghost would be here. Cammy did not hate Siryn, but she could be a lot to handle, especially on a mission that required stealth.

I've been keeping track of you, that's all. Jay goes with you everywhere. I admit, I'm a little jealous... he used to do that with me. Cammy instantly began to feel fear, but it was quelled as if by a soothing hand on her head. It's all right. He thinks he's protecting me. I'm glad he's not trying to protect everyone and leaving himself without one of us to protect him.

Cammy nodded. Videl, Raven, and one of the bugs is with us as well.

They were in the building now, and Cammy could feel the kirlia's thoughts receding. That's good. That's good... I have to go now, but come see me when you're free. I want to explore this new development. Without waiting for acknowledgement, Hinata pulled away from Cammy's mind. Cammy had to stop herself from going now. It was, still, the hardest thing to overcome, her skewed sense of time making everything seem as if everything that was already done or was to be done needed to be done at the present. It was a difficult task, constantly reminding herself that there was a past, where things had been done, and a future, when things still needed doing, and a present, in which she could only do certain things. Waiting, therefore was not a forte.

Future events were a little easier, since she had no visual memory to go along with the feeling that they needed to be immediately worked on, but she often had to stop herself when a new task came along.

Shaking her head from the tingling Hinata's communications caused, she made sure Jay was still in sight and followed him, secure that this, at least, needed doing now.

Ivy and Jay hurried down the non-descript hallways within the target building in silence. Well, almost silence. The sound of the elephant in the room was stomping all around them. Sagira was gone and they were both feeling it more than ever.

“What are we looking for, anyways?” Ivy hissed under her breath as they approached a blind corner and slowed to a trot.

Flattening their backs to the wall, the pair reached the turning and stopped. Turning her head to the side and back again, Ivy pricked her ears up and strained every sense. No sounds came from the unknown and the only smell that had filled her nostrils since entering the building was that of dust and an underlying smell of ‘new’. Everyone knows that ‘new’ smell – the sort of scent that comes off of a pack of playing cards fresh out of the wrapper or the interior of a recently purchased car. It didn’t offend Ivy exactly, just made her uneasy.

“Clear.” Ivy whispered from behind Jay. He nodded and flipped a tiny mirror on a stick around the corner, peering into it intently. Ivy gulped. That sort of move was something Sagira would have done in their siutation...

“Clear.” He confirmed.

With that, they hurried on.

“Just anything suspicious… I guess.” Jay muttered.

“But… Fine… But… Where are we even going?”

The pair slowed up, Jay’s Pokemon drawing in beside them. They had come down a flight from the roof and turned a couple of corners but for all the plain grey doors that decorated the halls, there was nothing to indicate that anyone had been on that floor in the past year let alone day. If anything suspicious was going on there was no indication of it so far.

A quick hand signal from Jay indicated that the door they had stopped next to (complete with little window) was the main stairwell that would take them down all the way to the ground floor and the pretzel shop below. Ivy took a deep sniff. The ovens downstairs were certainly fired up and baking away. If the shop was a front for anything then it was a certainly very successful one.

Ivy stepped forward and pushed the door open, walking out to the rail that spiralled down and down in front of her eyes. Had she really climbed that high on the outside of the building?! Surely it had only been a few floors? But the stairs went down… And down

“Um, Jay?” Ivy scratched the back of her head in contemplation. “I think this is suspicious… right?”

Jay peered through the door and down the stairwell, where the stairs followed a square spiral down, far too far down than his instincts told him were needed. "You know, Ivy," he said, pretending to speak it offhandedly, "I think you're right."

They pulled back into the hallway. Jay kept the door open with his foot as they looked at each other. "OK, so we definitely know they're not making pretzels here." Ivy's stomach growled, and a definite scent of baking dough wafted up the stairs. "Right. They're not just making pretzels..."

Pushing the door open again, Jay motioned for Ivy to follow him, and they stepped out to the stairwell together. Ivy seemed apprehensive, and Jay thought he might know why. "Don't worry, Iv. We don't have to climb down it."

Jay looked down, again, imagining Sagira, already halfway down the stairs, half crouching, half crawling to check out the floor on the first landing. He shook his head and the image faded as if it had been before his eyes.

They slid down the stairs with little incident, even though Jay expected to have to restrain Ivy when they passed the door to the first floor, where the goodies were being made. Come to think of it, he was surprised he didn't burst in there himself. He hadn't felt like breakfast, and he was now hungry.

The stairway beneath the door grew darker, until there was only the most minimum of light guiding their way. Curiously, Jay noticed his perception of brightening areas was still present, though muted, as if, while still seeing where it was "safest" to put his foot down, any other choices weren't unsafe, per se. That was the impression he got. Curious. He hadn't thought of the brightening areas as anything other than his making a split second decision and "seeing" that clearly...

Jay looked up. They had passed down three flights so far, with no doors, and the stairway extended down further, though it was hard to tell how far with the dimness. He looked back at Ivy, her face barely illuminated, and leaned closer. "Dark down there. It's making me curious to know exactly what they need to put so far under a pretzel shop. How about you?"

-----

"Can't read Si, can't read Si,
No you can't read Siryn's poker face!
(Siryn's got a ghostly body!)
Can't read Si, can't read Si,
No you can't read Siryn's poker face!
(Siryn's got a ghostly body!)

Nom Nom Nom Nom!
Nom Nom Nom Nom!"

The misdreavus gyrated and writhed around the room, a spartan room with a bed, a pair of chairs, and some medical equipment. She floated at about head height to an average person, tilting wildly as if her body were a head attached to an invisible neck. Below her, where hands could possibly have been, was a pair of handkerchiefs, flowing like ribbons in sweeping motions (one of which would raise to midway between the other one's lowest sweep and the "head" her body served and spiral in a circle briefly).

The ghost seemed completely unaware of the other two residents, a pair of kirlia, one of which lay in the bed quite still, tragically still, and the other of which sat propped next to him, with a magazine laying across her thin legs. Both kirlia looked similar, in that they were kirlia, but also in that there were line around their eyes and a general listlessness.

The sitting one jerked, once, then shook her head. Her eyes, a misted over green-grey, widened a little bit, lending her face a small amount more life than had been evident before, and she shook her head as if clearing fuzziness from her mind. She opened her mouth and rasped the first syllable of her species name, before grimacing and deciding to use her mental voice. Oddly, that, too, sounded a little raspy, but she didn't think about it. Travelling the psychic plain and searching for a lost entity was bound to have some repercussions.

Water...

Yes, the Hinata! Right away the Hinata! A cup rose from a little stand nearby and floated down the hall. Beads of sweat appeared on the misdreavus' forehead, but the cup returned, trembling slightly, but managing not to spill. It floated gently to the hand of the sitting kirlia, who, when it touched her, reached out to take it. A very, very small smile stretched the small mouth on the kirlia's face.

Thank you, she said, and the misdreavus seemed to slump in the air. However, the ghost perked up after Hinata took her drink. I could feel the power you used. You're getting stronger, she offered, gently.

Aw, shucks, not really. Siryn's face glowed, and she exploded into talking, unable to contain herself. Did the Hinata see Siryn dancing?! Or, well, sense it, since the Hinata is obviously blind!

Hinata's mouth quirked. Yes, dear, I sensed it. It made a very good anchor back here.

Siryn was practically bouncing, if she weren't floating several feet above the floor. What did the Hinata think?!

It made me very glad I'm blind, Hinata said dryly. Siryn's mouth dropped open in a gape, looking thoroughly shocked.

The Hinata made a joke! Did the Hinata find the Paladin?!

Hinata's face fell, then, dropping back in the mask of emotionlessness that she had worn for a month now. No. Not yet.

Siryn dropped into silence, looking struck, then floated over and nestled against Hinata's arm. The kirlia raised her arm, allowing the misdreavus to come closer, and rested her head against the fluff that flowed from the misdreavus.

If anyone can find the Paladin, the Hinata can.

A lone, thick tear oozed from Hinata's eyes, and she patted Siryn's body gently. I'm starting to wonder. After a pause, in which Hinata gazed blindly ahead and Siryn looked helpless, the kirlia sighed. Thank you, Siryn, for helping me... and for keeping an eye on Jay... Is he better?

Siryn nodded, or, at least, it would have been a nod if her head wasn't also her body. Jaytrainyman and Ivydoggirlprettyface are on a mishmish!

Hinata's eyes opened a little wide, then, with a nod, she turned back to Paladin. Then he's getting better.

Nuh-uh. The Ack was forced into it! Hinata's lip quirked once more. Ever since Sagira had been taken, Siryn had taken to calling the team, who had been unofficially designated 'the pack' by their comrades, in a shortening of the team's name, leaving off a letter or two each time. Still, the news was... odd.

Bryce finally got fed up, huh?

Nuh-uh. There's a new stucky-uppy boss! Even BossmanBryce doesn't like Stickupthebum! Hinata turned toward Siryn and gaped, and the handkerchiefs that Siryn had been 'dancing' with waved frantically. BossmanBryce's words, not Siryn's!

Hinata shook her head, 'looked' down at Paladin, and sighed. OK. Get me out at dinner time... The doctor's out, so we have to change the IV bags...

"Dark down there. It's making me curious to know exactly what they need to put so far under a pretzel shop. How about you?"

Ivy blinked back at Jay’s face in the dim stairwell. He wasn’t the same as the old Jay but for a moment he looked like he remembered what the old Jay was like… It made Ivy loosen a little – she liked the old Jay a lot more than the sad one Sagira had left behind…

“Er, that’s where they keep the spare pretzels?” She offered, scratching the back of her head in thought. Jay literally stared blankly back at her. Had she made a Silly!? “Ooor… Team Magma’s drillin’ to the centre of the earth and bringin’ out all the magmas to get us?”

Jay blinked. Ivy blushed.

“Yeah, me’s curious, too.” She finally uttered, turning her brow into a downward frown of deep thought. “So we’s gotsta take a look.”

They moved on in quiet, light fading and fading as they sank lower and lower below the mysterious pretzel shop. Ivy’s nose told her it was damp down below long before the scent of dirt and mud caught Jay’s nostrils but it was the characteristic smell of oil and the faint drone of machinery that first took her attention. She relayed this information to Jay and he signalled to proceed with caution, she following his every move down the treacherously dark steps.

*How’s he know where to put his feet in all this dark, anyway?!* Ivy demanded silently as they went before, very slowly, her own eyes began to pick out the stairs below them. *Maybe ol’ Saggy would have been able to see down here, too… Silly Catlady…* There was light coming from below. She hadn’t been taking note of how many flights they had spiralled down but Ivy wouldn’t have been surprised if it surpassed twenty, maybe thirty. Something very suspicious was going on, after all.

“Recon time means it’s Ivy time...” Ivy hissed, unclipping Alpha and Beta from her belt. Mightyena and Manectric materialised in the dim light – the flash from the Pokeballs momentarily blinding her. They whined very softly and she grumbled deep in her throat back. They had to be quiet and they had to be unseen. They nodded back to her – a strange thing to see from two canines - before sweeping down the stairs. The normal clickity-clack of their nails was unheard as they descended the last couple of flights, Alpha leading the way with Beta remaining only a flight below Ivy.

Soft growls, so quiet Ivy had to strain her ears, from Alpha were passed to Beta and then again up to Ivy. She turned to Jay.

“Three men. And… a… big water?” Ivy rubbed her chin. “Maybe they mean a pond? Lake? I dunno… And diggin machines… Alpha can smell some Pokemon, too, but he can’t see ‘em.”

Not a great deal of information, really. Ivy inwardly sighed. Her job as the Recon member of the team was difficult sometimes, even for her and her brothers.

“What do we do now?”

Jay closed his eyes. Every single step forward had been preceded with the question, "what do we do next". Ivy would ask Jay, Jay would ask Ivy, Ivy would then ask Jay. If not for the fact that both of them were, in fact, perfectly capable of knowing what to do next, and did those things when asked, they wouldn't have gotten anywhere.

Sagira, had she been there, would have snorted and moved on before they noticed she was gone. And knocked out the guards in the way. After stealing their pokeballs. While they were looking.

"What we do now is stop asking what to do now," he said, popping his neck. "We've been second guessing ourselves all night, and if we get into that habit... you'd have fallen off the building."

Jay looked toward the door, pulling out a pokeball and calling out Videl. "We'll need your boys to keep a nose out for a while longer. Videl will be back up in case we get caught, along with Cammy. Raven and Stinger will stay in the pokeballs for now."

Jay looked toward the door, narrowing his eyes. "There's something important there. I can feel it." And he could Something in his bones, resonating like a plucked guitar string. Without another word, he walked to the door and pushed.

It didn't open. Glad for the dark, where Ivy couldn't see his blush, he gripped the door knob and, slowly, twisted. Luckily, it wasn't locked, and there wasn't anyone immediately beyond the door, but there was a sudden rush of slightly cooler air and some new smells and noises. Smells and noises that were not pretzel related. Looking back at Ivy, he gestured with his head, ducked in through the doorway, holding the door to let her in.

“They’re hurt…” Ivy whispered as she walked into the room, her eyes unable to see a thing in the lack of light. Instead, she relied on her heightened hearing and sense of smell to detect the creatures hiding in the shadows.

The smell of dirt, oil and an overall dampness were clearly strong enough to be smelled by any normal human but Ivy could pick out the distinct taint of sweat that was born of fear and desperation. Whatever was huddled back in the darkness was not happy. The sound of scraping and shuffling was faint but certainly there – a signal that the beleaguered denizens in the underground room were weak and afraid of their presence.

“Jay…” Ivy continued to peer into the blackness. “There’s lots of them…”

She edged further into the room, reaching out with one hand to sweep the area to make sure she had enough room before unclipping Omicron from her belt. She clicked his Pokeball open and, in the brief moment where light from the release illuminated the room, was able to catch a brief glimpse of the room they had entered.

It was long, rather than wide, lined with cage upon cage stuffed with soft-looking grey lumps of flesh and bone. Whatever they were, these Pokemon were exhausted, scared and covered in soil. Rage began to boil up in the Aqua Elite’s chest before the light even faded, leaving a static imprint of the room left in her eyes. She grit her teeth and moved forward, feeling Omicron’s warm fur pressing against her leg to guide her.

“HOLD IT!”

Blinding lights illuminated every corner of the room in an instant. Ivy squeezed her eyes tight shut and instinctively held up her arms to defend against attack but none came.

“INTRUDERS ON LEVEL G9! INTRUDERS, LEVEL G9!”

The crackle at the end of the man’s voice gave Ivy enough information to know the voice wasn’t actually in the room with them but rather playing over a loud speaker. Whatever trap or security measure had been employed in the room had been sprung and now their infiltration was soon to become a battle for escape.

“Bur? Dril drilbur?” The confused and battered Pokemon in the cages cowered away from the light as Ivy turned back to Jay.

“Jay, I-“ She stopped mid sentence. With their eyesight returning rapidly, she was able to see something the would have gone completely unnoticed as they entered. There, next to Jay and the door, was a map pinned to the wall. It depicted a plan of Noverus from above, a red circle near the centre of town and a dotted line leading to a secluded spot just outside of the city… The Maw. A deep tunnel. Mole-like Pokemon stacked in cages. A path connecting their location to the HQ of Team Auqa in noverus. “Oh my gravy!”

Jay felt a familiar pang in his chest when it was made clear exactly what was happening. He could feel his jaw clenching, relaxing only to tighten again. As his eyes grew used to the darkness in this room, he could see each drilbur clearly. Some of them had injuries on their snouts or bodies. Others were thinner than their general shape seemed to allow for. Still others were still. Too still.

When Ivy had called forth Omicron, the light had slightly blinded him, but soon the shapes were back, and more. Now, he could see the creatures individually, as if a soft light had illuminated each one. On some, a halo of weakly flickering light surrounded them. More, however, had only the slight illumination, allowing Jay to see each detail, each gouge, each bruise, each broken claw and missing eye... there were few, too many but still only a few, that had no light at all, in fact, seemed to swallow the light that Jay thought should be there.

Then light and sound exploded throughout the room, and Jay hissed, hiding his eyes in the cook of his arm. The drilbur in the cages shuffled against the backs of them, away from the sudden light as the voice on the other end commanded that they halt. Jay and Ivy took the time to blink away the glare. Jay had recognized that the voice was a recording, and, from her tone, Ivy had, too.

"Jay, I- Oh my gravy!" Jay looked toward the spot where Ivy's eyes were locked, and his face went grim.

In truth, had he not seen it, he wouldn't have changed his course of action. The presence of the map with the Maw clearly marked, with the line going to it, with the target over their home, only made his decided course of action more urgent, as well as more correct.

"Get that map, Ivy, then help me over here." Jay pulled two pokéballs off of his belt and opened them, both with bright flares of light. From one came the familiar shape of Cammy, looking around. Her eyes fell on the cages, and she reeled backwards, acting out the shock that Jay himself had done his best to suppress. The other released the flat, insectoid shape of Stringer, who looked around but otherwise had no reaction. At least, not until the hairs on his thorax rearranged themselves to a deep, angry scowl.

"Stringer," he ordered, keeping his voice as quiet as possible and still be heard. "Put a web over that door, as thick as you can make it. Cammy, help me with these cages."

He could feel Ivy's confusion behind him, without really knowing how he could feel it or why he knew what it was, but he offered no explanations. Not yet. He was, in fact, mentally kicking himself. They hadn't checked for cameras or traps or speakers or anything like that. It was sloppy work.

Sagira would have never gotten herself caught like this. And if he or Ivy had while in her presence, she'd have bitched at them about it the whole time.

He did not find it the least bit odd that he missed that about her, either.

Jay moved to the cages, opening the ones he could, to tired looking pokémon who had obviously been recently worked and starved, and forcing the ones he had to. Cammy, a fighting type working against steel bars, was able to make shorter work of them, and Jay felt the times he was able to pull a door off of its hinges were due to the door being poorly maintained. The drilbur, however, remained as far from the openings as possible.

Jay and Cammy glanced at each other. Jay signed to her We need to tell them they can leave.

Cammy's face drooped. I cannot she signed back. Jay put a hand on top of her head.

I'm sorry. I didn't forget, but I didn't remember soon enough, either. Jay turned to Omicron, unwilling to call more of his own pokémon, lest someone be watching and he not have any surprises left. "Ivy, do you think Omicron can tell these pokémon we don't mean to hurt them?" Then, a wicked flash of inspiration struck. "And that there's food, that way," he said, pointing up at an angle toward the fourth floor. "He might even want to suggest... the direct route." A grin, grim and wicked and not at all like his usual smile, spread across his face.

“Right!” Ivy pounced on the map and tore it from the wall – scraps of paper still pinned where the corners had been fastened. Rolling the paper quickly into a long tube, Ivy folded it once over and stuffed it deep into her left boot. By this point, Jay had summoned his Riolu and one of his Spinarak. A shrill whistle and Ivy’s other Pokemon appeared in the doorway. The space in the room was already limited so she recalled them immediately. With a quick order from Jay, his spider was clogging up the door and Cammy was helping to open cages.

Then Jay asked Ivy to get Omicron to speak with the injured tunnelling Pokemon.

“Omicron speak to these things?” Ivy said half to herself. She looked down at her newest Pokemon and the already-faithful canid looked to her expectantly. He completely understood what Jay had said but was waiting for Ivy’s confirmation. She chewed the inside of her mouth absent-mindedly. Beta and Kappa wouldn’t have even waited for a cue to urge these beleaguered Pokemon to freedom and even Alpha would have at least acknowledged them by now. But Omicron… He was just waiting on Ivy’s word.

“OK, Omicron.” Ivy gathered her fists before her. “We’ve got to make sure these Pokemon know we’re on their side!” She switched over to growling and barking quickly before the Drilbur could pick up on her callous moment-of-truth speaking. [i]”They need to dig us out of here – it’s the only way. The pretzel shop is still right over us and they can eat whatever they want when they get there but right now we need to get moving and FAST. Do whatever it takes to convince them – whatever it takes!”

The Growlithe nodded and turned to the Drilbur scatted amongst the cages. His chest was proud and head high as he began to bark in universal Poke-speak to the collated moles and draw their attention away from despair and fear and towards freedom and food. Watching him speak so earnestly to the Ground-types made Ivy wonder once again where this Pokemon had come from. He was an amazing find, indeed. More of a general on a battlefield than any of her Pokemon and he had been with her only days.

Slowly, the Drilbur began to edge towards the edges of the cages and peered through squinting eyes at the Growlithe that bolstered their spirits. Ivy’s Pokemon turned and spat a flame at the far wall where the make-shift plaster had already crumbled with damp, exposing hard earth beyond. The remaining wall crumbled under his flames and one by one, Drilbur moved towards the hole.
The first to reach the wall touched tentatively at it with a gnarled claw and then looked back towards the Aqua operative and their Pokemon. Omicron barked at him again, this time with more urgency and a stamp of his foot. The Drilbur seemed to sigh before looking back at the wall and burying a claw into the dirt. Again and again, the digging claws of the moles dug into the wall and in seemingly no time they began to disappear into the dark, leaving a trail of dirt and rocks behind them.

“C’mon, Jay!” Ivy bounded for the hole and plunged into the dark with Omicron at her heels.

Jay very nearly saluted Omicron when he had finished "speaking" to the drilbur, impressed by the growlithe's tone of dignified command. Omicron proved the analogy apt when, as the mole-pokémon hesitated, Omicron made his position quite clear. He was inspiring, commanding...

Ivy had herself a general.

Ivy plunged haphazardly into the dark hole (though, with her senses and Omicron to lead her, she may not have been as bad off as Jay), and he had little choice but to follow. However, once inside, the faint outlines that had made the drilbur apparent before were able to guide him to where they were, with a startling brighter pair of outlines at the rear (from the shape and actions of one, very bright outline, the owner was trying desperately to get the others to move faster).

A paw reached up and slid into his hand, and pulled, leading him deeper into the cave. It was Cammy's, he knew, but something pulled him back toward the entrance, and, oddly, when he felt the pull, almost immediately Cammy stopped pulling.

Jay looked out at the webbed over doorway. If they had a fire pokémon, that web wouldn't last long. And of course someone would have a fire pokémon, they were Team Freakin' Magma.

"Stringer, I need another web across this door. Can you do it?" Stringer turned about to look at Jay, with no change in his eyes or mandibles to indicate understanding, let alone acknowledgement. However, the fine black hairs on his back shifted to show, instead of the usual two dots with a line underneath, a dot, a dash, and a curved line.

Stringer was winking at him.

"Huh." He nodded, then turned to Cammy, signing in the waning light. Follow them. I'll be right behind you.

You come, too, Cammy signed furiously. They come, they catch you. You come too. You must! Her face was fierce, but Jay put a hand on her head to still her.

I will be right behind you. I'm giving Stringer, he had to spell the name in sign to show it was a name, and not a person who strings, some more instructions. Go now!

Cammy scowled, both at him and at the spinarak, then turned and scampered up the tunnel. Before the light disappeared, she turned back, her face worried. You are lost.

Cammy's odd tense impediment had been a problem, before Hinata explained it. Then Siryn's "interpretation" became the problem. It was finally worked out, and Jay understood that Cammy only sensed time as the present. Hinata swore they were working on it, but until then it took some time to figure out when Cammy was talking of the past, the future, or the present.

I'll be fine, Jay finally signed. I won't get lost. I'll find you. If Cammy had signed back, Jay couldn't see it. The light had been blocked, and all Jay could see was an intense, flickering outline of Cammy as she turned and ran.

Jay turned to Stringer and knelt, almost kneeing the poor bug in the back, but missing by a few hairs. If Stringer had been distressed by this, Jay couldn't see it. "Stringer, we're going to start going up very soon. When I give the word, I want you to hop off of me and put the strongest net over that entrance. Buy us some time."

Stringer tapped one foot against Jay's head, and that was all the acknowledgement he got. Still, it was enough. However, whether or not Jay would be able to enact his plan was put in jeopardy.

Outside of the room, muffled by two layers of webbing, a voice shouted "Bring a fire pokémon! They're this way!"

Jay ran, heedless of the dark. He heard a sound, like a combination of an air gun and someone spitting a wad of phlegm, and heard whistling through strands almost immediately after. The final sound was a light crackle, and Jay grinned.

It didn't take too long for Jay to catch up, and there were Cammy and Ivy, outlined in intense colors, Cammy dancing from one foot to another as she looked toward the makeshift entrance they had made. Dirt and rubble was already rapidly piling up where the tunnel began to slope.

Before Jay could ask why they were still there, Ivy slipped into the tunnel. Looking past her, some of the drilbur were climbing slowly up, and Jay understood: Ivy, and Cammy, had taken up the rear guard position and made sure that the drilbur went first. Even now, Cammy was boosting a tiny drilbur that Ivy had either missed or entrusted to Cammy. Jay wasn't even sure Ivy knew Cammy was about, and if she had, they had no real way to communicate in the dark; Cammy would be able to hear her, of course, but had no way to vocalize acknowledgement. Jay didn't know if Ivy knew standard Sign Language. He certainly hadn't taught her.

A flash of emotional pain surged through him, but he bore it down. It was too stressful to think of Sagira right now.

"Get started, Stringer," Jay ordered softly, and he could hear the beginnings of the web door that he had ordered being formed. Already at the bottom, the rocks, dirt, and debris was starting to pile up. Jay could see, through whatever remarkable vision he had gained, that Stringer had moved to inside the cavern. It was time for him and Cammy to do so as well.

"Let's go, Cammy, get in," he said, hopping up and through before Cammy could protest. She did the same, adding an elated spin as she passed through the shrinking opening in the tunnel mouth.

It was already a tight fit, and getting tighter as the dirt piled up against the web. Jay heard "Just run through it, it's a thin web," just as the hole closed, and had to stop and laugh as he heard the sharp crackle, followed by a scream. They had gotten through the second web faster than he'd considered, but it didn't matter. What mattered now was not drowning them in the dirt now cascading down the sloping tunnel.

"On my back!" Jay ordered, pulling Cammy up without asking. He had reached for Stringer, but the spinarak was already scuttling over his head. Rolling his eyes at his own forgetfulness, Jay started pulling himself up, bracing himself on the shifting dirt and pulling himself up by his arms.

"Burn this one, too!" called the command, now muffled by webs and pounds of dirt. Some time had passed, Jay knew; it must have taken a while to clear their teammate as well as get past the webbing. Perhaps Stringer had laid another trap or two. Jay, Cammy, and Stringer had almost caught up to the rest of the group. The dirt behind them was piled up pretty thick by now.

"No, you idiots!" came the shout just before the rumble of said dirt falling out of the newly opened tunnel rushed over the Magma grunts. Also being in a tunnel that wasn't sloping, if they weren't buried, it would take them a bit to get past the plug of dirt.

Jay had caught up. How far they had climbed was unknown: The tunnel was being dug rapidly and Jay wasn't exactly sure how far down they were to begin with. But there was a crowd of pokebutts in the way, and one frustrated Ivy.

A loud crack sounded, and a small amount of light filled the tunnel, which, looking back, Jay could see had been sloped to keep the humans from sliding back down. That was considerate, but once those Magma troops got past the dirt piled against them...

"Mmm," murmured Ivy, licking her lips. Jay gave her a look, then smelled it himself: Pretzels.

The smell had an effect on the drilbur, quickening their movements as they broke through the floor of the building. Jay could now see that at least three feet of their tunnel was through solid stone, or cement at least. It was a wonder that they hadn't hit any plumbing.

The drilbur raced through the hole once it was big enough for three to get through at a time. This made it easy enough for Ivy to pass, and the pokémon had no problems at all, but for Jay it was a tight fit, ripping a long gash in his shirt.

"Great," he muttered. "Just great."

From the other room came screams, and Jay knew the drilbur were raising havoc. It gave him an idea.

He knelt, then, patting both Stringer and Cammy, muttered, "You two were excellent. Thank you. But I have to put you back in the pokéball, " he said directly to Stringer, "'cause Ivy and I are going to need to move extremely fast." Stringers back hairs made a frown, but his head nodded. With a nod of his own, he recalled his spinarak, clipping the pokéball to his belt as he turned to Ivy.

"Do your best to follow my lead. If you think you can't, just follow me." He winked, and smiled. "Let's get out of here."

He stood and stepped to the door, stepping through it. The kitchen was empty, except for one, small drilbur that had stuffed itself and was now sitting content, patting its stomach. Jay got another idea, but there was no time to brief Ivy.

"Hey, little guy," Jay said, kneeling. "Thanks for helping us. Would you be willing to help again?"

The drilbur looked at him with sleepy eyes and belched, then nodded. Jay lifted him gingerly to his shoulders. Jay winked at Cammy, spelling something with his left hand, and she snickered. "OK, buddy. Hold on tight!"

The door to the main room crashed open, causing the customers already fighting panic from the drilbur raiding the display cases en masse to scream. Jay appeared, eyes wide, hair wild, with a gigantic tear in his shirt and a drilbur on his back, and screamed at the top of his lungs, "RUN! RUN FOR YOUR LIVES! THEY'RE MAD I TELL YOU! MAAAAD!!!"

The drilbur on his back didn't look mad, so much as confused, but the people no longer cared, screaming and hollering, they crowded through the door, spurred along by the frantically screaming Jay, ("SAVE YOURSELVES!") who twisted, writhed, and turned, ("YOUR WEAPONS ARE USELESS AGAINST THEM!") fighting off the obviously vicious creature who was trying to either tear off, or cut off, the man's head ("OH THE POKEMONITY!"). With every flail and spin, the drilbur's feet rose off of Jay's shoulders or back, but it held on tenaciously.

No one noticed, no one who didn't already know the young man, that the hands that appeared to be trying to pry the pokémon's claws off were actually holding them in place.

It wasn't long before the doorway was cleared, and Jay and Ivy could slip out and dash away to find their way to headquarters.

Ivy’s little frame stood stock still, completely dumbfounded by what she saw. The little mole was… attacking… Jay? And he was… scared… of it? That tiny fluffy mole… Jay was scared of it… Why would you invite a cute little Pokemon like that to ‘hold on tight’ just to let it rampage all over your head?!!?

“Huh?” Ivy blinked. Then her brows turned down. “Gerroff!” She launched herself after Jay as he twisted and jerked around the room, trying in vain to dislodge the offending critter.

Jay’s eye flashed dangerously at Ivy for one brief moment in a ‘I’ve got this’ sort of way but Ivy couldn’t disagree more. If it had been her, that Drilbur would have been off her head and under a boot in a second!
In a bizarre game of cat-and-mou… dog-and-ca… dog-and-bird?, Ivy threw herself after Jay and out of the Pretzel shop into the streets of Noverus.

It took two blocks for Ivy to realise what was really going on and the pair of Aqua agents took a detour to a small park to say farewell to the mistreated mole Pokemon. Without them, Ivy and Jay wouldn’t have escaped the secret base with the plans that Magma had been scheming and they really did deserve an escort to some soft earth where they could tunnel away.

“Almost there!” Ivy panted as they approached the final bridge out of the city with the sun falling low in the sky ahead of them. Their vehicle, a small powerboat loaned by their harbour master at the Maw had a bunch of supplies, including biscuits that Ivy could practically taste. But biscuits would have to wait – the rolled up map in her boot was far too important to waste time on snacking (irrespective of deliciousness).

Heels ground on asphalt as Ivy kicked herself to a halt as dark shapes appeared on the bridge ahead of them. Silhouettes of mysterious figures blocked their path and something about the way they stood there did not suggest that they were friendly.

“Grrr…” Omicron growled ominously at Ivy’s heel.

Ivy tensed up. She was so so tired after the mission and yet some other obstacle had appeared. She clenched her fists and grit her teeth. It was probably time for another fight.

“Jay…” Ivy shifted. “We can’t be stopped here…” She reached towards the Pokeballs at her belt but there was a sudden flash of movement from one of the figures ahead that made her fingertips freeze where they were. “We can’t be stopped here!!!” Ivy roared and threw herself into a sprint towards the centre target of the three figures. Omicron flew at her side.

*Magma must be stopped! No matter what!!!*
