Is it better to have false hope or to have no hope at all?

If there's a chance, you have to take it. I'd rather fail and try, then do nothing at all.

I would rather continue onwards anyway in case by some miracle it does work. Even if it didn't, I could die knowing I tried at least which would be better than giving up in my opinion.

Falso Hope. Wouldn't everything go down in chaos if we didn't hope?

In reference to the plan, it's a simple chance vs. certainty principle. On one hand, you have 99% chance of failure, and death. On the other hand, you have 100% chance of failure, and death. The most likely outcome is failure, and death, but in the first choice, there's a chance for success. Therefore, the only logical solution if you want life is to take the chance.
It's just like that movie where a nuclear sub thinks it has orders to launch it's nuke on Russia. To be more accurate, they got a garbled message, which either meant "launch" or "don't launch". One guy wanted to launch. The other guy didn't. What they both knew is that if they didn't launch, another sub would. So here's the situation: They either DON'T launch, and another sub, who most likely got the whole message, will launch if the orders were indeed to launch, or they do launch. However, if they launch, there's a guarantee that the enemy will detect the nuke, and fire back, starting a nuclear holocaust. So, they don't fire, and have a chance at a nuclear holocaust not happening, or they do fire, and there's a 100% chance of a nuclear holocaust happening. Chance vs. certainty. On the other hand, if you have a case where both instances have a 100% chance of failure, and death, then it doesn't matter what you do, though chances are people will start to get suspicious if the world is supposed to end this afternoon and there's no spaceship for them to board. PS, why do I feel like you watched Knowing right before making the poll? I believe the choice differ if you actually are working to complete a project to save yourself, or yourself and the world.
It's a bit harder not to do everything when so many are counting on you, including everyone you love. I'd do everything in that case, as giving up would be not only getting a certain death, but also getting a death nothing that you didn't do everything. That's even more lame! -------------------- ♥ Venez faire un tour ♥ |

As someone with a large ego, I would try until the very end..

No hope. If I can't change it then why try? I'd rather accept it and move on. Whatever happens happens.

I would try until the bitter end, until I was absolutely certian it was going to fail. Then I would have a complete nervous breakdown- when the end of the world came, I would either be curled up on the on the floor screaming, running away like a lunatic screaming, or randomly smashing things/killing people... While screaming.
I'm highly strung. -------------------- "The world spins on pain. I realised that if there is a supreme power, then it is our duty to become it's moral superior." -Lord Havelock Vetinari, Patrician of Ankh-Morpork "The sentient may perceive and love the universe, but the universe may not perceive and love the sentient. The universe sees no distinction between the multitude of creatures and elements which comprise it. All are equal. None is favored. The universe, equipped with nothing but the materials and the power of creation, continues to create: something of this, something of that. It cannot control what it creates and it cannot, it seems, be controlled by its creations (though a few might deceive themselves otherwise). Those who curse the workings of the universe curse that which is deaf. Those who strike out at those workings fight that which is inviolate. Those who shake their fists, shake their fists at blind stars."- Michael Moorcock, author. |

I would go for false hope, but there'll be a bit of hope there that we might survive. It's better than believing we're going to die and there's nothing we can do about it. But I guess that won't be the true reality, wouldn't it?

I would try till the end, but I wouldn't hope. I've done it before, on more minor scales. I tried my best to go on with life after my mom died, but didn't hope that life would get better. If you hope for stuff like that, and it fails... you'll be hurt worse.
It's kinda like when my mom's mom got sick with cancer before my mom died. My mom hoped at first that she'd get better, but when it was at the 99% chance that she wouldn't, my mom made peace with it. I was too young I guess to really grasp it, so I hoped like crazy that she would get better. But, when she didn't and she passed away it tore me apart for a while. It's one of those situations. Hope can make people relax somewhat for a while, or become careless enough to overlook something important. On the other hand working on something without hope, but trying to do the best that you can might end with better results. So yeah. blah blah blah~ PESSIMISTS RULE! ehem... that's all I have to say on the matter. -------------------- "Those with the biggest smiles carry the deepest scars."
