To Douken, this was a vacation! No blizzard. No meteors. No Nightmares. No way in hell did he want to think about death! Right now, he just wanted to battle like a trainer and get himself ready. Gigarte's gym leader has been having quite the win steak, so he had to make sure everything was in order. A good old tournament felt like just the answer he was looking for.

"Well, well, if it isn't Mr. Sota! Glad to have you on board!" A man in a suit walked up, handing Douken some paperwork, looking like most of it was already filled out. "Being the winner of the Arasam and Petropolis gyms, I doubt you have much threats to worry about. I am sure people will be rooting for you, myself included!"

With a small chuckle, Douken replied, "Thanks, but apparently, this tournament is going to be using some technology to try and balance out the powers between players. having the badges only mean I got experience in challenging battles, not a sure-fire win."

"This is true, but with your experience and skill, very few will be able to stand in your way. Now please, step up to the counter and get things set up." Douken giving the man a finger to say, "one moment," he headed over to the PC for a party swap before heading for the counter.

"Now then, as we take care of your team, we are also strengthening or weakening your team until everyone is the same level. Moves gained this way are usable, but the effect is only temporary," the nurse stated as his Pokeballs went through the healing and adjustment process before getting handed back. "best of luck."

"Now then," the suited man said, pushing him along to the field, "go show them how a gym battler fights."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Next up, Douken Sota VS. Joey Halls."
At the C-8 platform, Douken and another trainer was getting ready to get started. "Sucks that you have to be my opponent," Joey smirked as he held out a Pokeball. "This here is a companion i have had for over seven years, and even now he is one of the best ones out there. Don't believe me? Take a look!" And what he sent out was a Radicate, the evolved form of most people's first catch, the Rattata. "You are scared, aren't you? We are in perfect sync, and this is the best one out there. There is no way you can win!"
"Koldo, you're up!" Tossing the Pokeball into the sky, it busted open, revealing his Toxicroak. "Hey Koldo, he says that's the best of his kind, you up for it?" With a dark cackle, Douken knew he was ready.
"BEGIN!"
"Koldo, Poison Jab!"
"Sucker Punch, Radicate!"
Wanting to take the first hit, the rat dashed forward, slamming himself into the stomach of Toxicroak before getting impaled by the poisonous fist, and with both Poison jab and Poison Touch having the chance of poison, the rat was already starting to feel sick, not like he was worried.
"Look like ou triggered Radicate's Guts ability by poisoning him! Now he is much stronger! Show him the new strength with Hyper Fang!" With teeth glowing sharply, the rat crunched down on Koldo's arm, attempting to cause a flinch.
"Venoshock!" Churning a fluid inside his mouth, the frog spat out a special acid which cause a more severe burn if the enemy was already poisoned, which the rat clearly did not like.
"Finish it off with Brick Break!"
"Quick Attack!"
The rat once again collided into Koldo, but followed up to a chop to the noggin, a super effective hit with poison knocking him out.
"Radicate is unable to battle, victory goes to Douken Sota! Best of luck in the next round."
With a small sigh, he returned Koldo and waited to see who was going to be next.
*OK, Lor – you can do this…* Lori Pardare, swathe of red hair gripped in a double white knuckled stranglehold nervously scanned the arena. A warm breeze that carried the salty tang of the sea stirred what hair was not ensnared in her palms and ruffled the pink-and-black pop dress that she had chosen for the tournament. She swayed unsteadily and shot out a hand to grab the rail of the bridge connecting the mainland with her battle arena setting – a green island with majestic stone circles dotting the battlefields that had been drawn out there.
The emotional fallout aura of her battle at the Gym on Fidona was still following her like a bad smell and the prospect of any sort of competitive battling again was a daunting one. Her sister Kino, past champion of the Unova region, had told her more than once since that crushing defeat that no Trainer in the world could expect to win every single battle but what they can expect to do is learn from their failures and keep on working toward whatever they want to achieve.
“So… C-8, huh?” Lori chewed her lip and peered the signpost at the other side of the bridge. The battlefields were definitely indicated there but she was too far away to read it just yet. Like her dream, just out of reach but tantalisingly close…
“Lup?” Pipster prodded her leg with a stubby wing questioningly.
“Yeah,” Lori gulped hard and looked down to her partner, “I’m ready, Pipster.”
“Piplup!”
“Then, let’s go!”
Together, Trainer and Pokemon broke into a run down the other side of the bridge and toward their first event.
*****
“This is, like, hard.” Lyla muttered as she tapped away on the computer next to the registration bench. “Who to pick… who to pick…”
After arriving at the Petropolis tournament, Lyla and Darryn had been split up to go and face their respective preliminary battles and throughout the whole walk from the front gate to the island arena the breeder had been considering her options for battle. More than that, Lyla had been considering her chances of actually getting a win under her belt. It was no longer a secret, well, not to Darryn anyway, that she had flunked battling 101 at the Pokemon Academy in the Johot region and since then she’d never relly put her battle knowledge to the test. Not wnting to sell herself completely short, however, Lyla had decided to participate in the event rather than spectate so that she could put into practice some of what she had learned from her cousin.
“Momo… Kaki…” She rolled the two Pokeballs around in her hands thoughtfully. They clacked against one another playfully, a whirlpool of indecision in her palm. Of the two she had an absolute powerhouse that could only be relied on for battle if one of the other members of her team was in danger and the other would like not follow orders if he had a better idea of his own. “Not you two.” She sighed and plopped the balls into her bag.
“So that leaves four young ones…” Lyla regretfully plucked the remaining Pokeballs from the bag and set them in the capsule-holders on the computer desk in front of her. “Or I could switch one for a Pokemon back at the Center…”
“Miss Moore to field C-8,” a voice crackled over the tannoy system, ”that’s Miss Lyla Moore to C-8. Last call.
“Wha!?” Lyla shrieked and jerked up right, swinging her bag over her shoulder in surprised where it thunked heavily onto the desk. A dull whir from the machine ensued as Lyla frantically searched for a clue to the direction of her preliminary field. She missed the bag touching the ‘transfer’ button and the accompanying flash of light and in her haste, snagged up the four Pokeballs from the tray and stuffed them in her bag, launching into a tottering sprint towards her first battle.
*****
Lori thumbed the first Pokeball at her side with indecision.
*Kino says that a gamble can always pay off… And all of my Pokemon are going to be on a level playing field with my opponent’s thanks to that new computer system thingy… Meaning even the most inexperienced of my team could have a chance…*
“Lori Pardare of Twinleaf Town versus Lyla Moore of Mauville City. Both combatants may use one Pokemon each and the winner is decided when one side is no longer able to battle. Pokeballs ready aaand… begin!” The referee’s flags swept down and both Lori and her opponent threw their Pokeballs into the arena.
“Apache, I choose you!”
“Go, Anzu!... Wait, what?! What are you doing here, Kumo!?”
Lori faltered as the pink-clad blonde across the battlefield waved erratically at the blue bird that materialised on her side of the field. It had cloud little clouds for wings and fluttered lazily on the slight sea breeze. Apache, Lori’s newly hatched Rufflet, emerged and sat down on the ground – unable to fly continuously just yet as he had only hatched not long before Lori travelled to the event.
*Don’t let them trick you, Lor! Attack now!*
“Apache! Use your Aerial Ace attack!” Lori declared, dramatically pointing at the foe’s seemingly accidental selection of Pokemon. With a primal squawk, Apache dashed along while keeping low to the ground and then leapt like a feathered bullet.
“Kumo! No!” Lyla cried as her Swablu span through the air like a cheap stuffed animal. “Oh no! What attacks do you have?! Try Peck!”
“Swaaablu!” The bird Pokemon fluttered back on course and swept down at the larger avian with a glowing beak thrust forward.
“Dodge it and use Wing Attack!” Lori urged her Rufflet and, miraculously, his speed and power paid off in a well-timed evasion and strike combo. The Swablu hit the deck hard and Apache rounded on it quickly, tearing up the ground like a bull would before charging a matador.
“Oh… What was I, like, raising you again?” Lyla moaned, thumbing through her notebook with worry. “You must know an attack worth passing on as… That’s it!”
“Apache! Use another Aerial Ace!”
“Kumo, blast it away with Dragon Pulse!”
The crowd gasped as a ball of brilliant azure danced free from the tiny Swablu’s beak and directly intothe oncoming form of Apache. Feathers flew as the Rufflet was catapulted back and away from his target, tumbling across the ground where he skidded to a groaning halt. Lori gasped.
“Apache, get up!” She cried, watching painfully as the Swablu regained its footing and began to take aim once more.
“Kumo, Dragon Pulse one more time!” Lyla’s initial despair was turned into the glee of an approaching win like the flick of a switch. Lori’s mind ran down the list of attacks that had met her upon registering her Rufflet and only one thing came to mind.
“Apache, Air Slash!”
With a sudden intensity, the Rufflet’s eyes narrowed and took on a piercing red hue as something took over his body. With a terrifying scream, he swept both wings forward and released an arc of razor-sharp wind that met the Dragon Pulse head-on. Wind cleaved draconic energy in two and continued through to rip up the foe with a powerful storm of invisible blades. With a strangled cry, the Swablu fell.
“Swablu is unable to battle! Lori Pardare wins this preliminary round!”
“YES!” Lori punched the air and dashed into the arena to wrap up her Rufflet in a hug. “You were awesome, Apache!” She lifted him up and hurried to the other girl who was recalling her unconscious bird. “Thank you for our battle, Miss Moore. I had fun and I think Apache did, too!”
“That’s, like, no problem!” Lyla smiled sweetly and offered a hand to shake which Lori took happily. “You and your Rufflet were, like, totally cool. Congratulations on moving on to the next round.”
“Thanks!” Lori waved to the girl as she moved off the battlefield, a sigh passing her lips and her pink-clad shoulders slumping as she walked away. Lori knew all too well how she felt but couldn’t help being consumed in the AWESOMENESS of her win. “Preliminaries complete, time for the first round!” She declared, hurring to the scoreboards tofind out who her next opponent would be.
"May the contestants please gather at their designated stations," was soon announced over the intercoms before the battle pairings were revealed, showing trainers on both side, a piece of land in the middle, and coordinates right below. Island arena, eh? Sounds like fun, thought Douken before he ran to the designated spot.
Looked like arrived first, too as his enemy's zone was empty. With the judge looking in his direction, Douken answered him, "I am Douken Sota, ready to fight!"
The judge nodded in response, asking him, "Being first to arrive, you have the option to voice your option of single, double, or triple battle. Now Mr. Sota, what do you prefer?"
"Triple," Douken answered, remembering the chaos that happened on Loch Ranch. It only said that trainers needed to pay attention to more detail, even if the battles can be taken care of faster. "As for my team: Maya, Sabre, Reep; let's go for it!" Throwing out the three Pokeballs, all three came out in flashes of white light onto the battlefield. His Dewgong landed in the water, Dusclops stood on land and Skarmory sticking to the skies. It was a set up that granted him access to all three terrains the island field provided. Not like he was scared in showing his choices before his opponent appeared anyways. Even if she wanted to change format, he was going to stick with these choices.
“Looks like we’re up again!” Lori spotted the image of herself on the display screen in the waiting area at her designated island arena. Alongside her own portrait ws that of a teen, like her but probably a bit older, with spectacles and a mess of dark blonde hair. She couldn’t really tell anything from the photo but nerves were already bubbling within her chest.
*A boy!? Oh God! How can I beat a boy!?*
She hurried to the field, finding her opponent on the field already, his Pokemon ready and waiting her arrival. She skidded to a stop at the sidelines and stared at the three beasts preparing themselves for battle and held back a gasp. They were all so… so BIG! None of her Pokemon stood a chance against them! An enormous metal bird, a majestic sealion and a…
“GHOST!” Lori screeched, a bunch of hair finding each fist in front of her in a deathgrip. She froze, unable to move as the rolling eye of the creepy Dusclops regarded her from its place on the field. Everything in Lori’s body told her to run but her legs simply wouldn’t budge.
“Miss Pardare?” The referee touched her arm.
“WAAAH!” Lori yelled, pulling back from him in fright before she registered that the ghost was still where her eyes had left it.
“Ahem…” The referee held out a guiding arm. “You’re allocated to the blue side of the field. Please, let me escort you.”
On shaking legs, Lori allowed herself to be herded into her battle box. The referee puts boths hands on her shoulders and looked her in the eyes.
“Mister Sota has requested a Triple Battle. Are the standard Triple Battle rules acceptable or should we take a coin toss?”
Lori nodded wordlessly, her wide eyes still transfixed on Reep. The referee took that as an affirmative and hastily made his way to the sidelines once more.
“Your Pokemon, when you are ready.” He called to her. Her hands nervously found the green-capped spheres that she had prepared for the battle.
*C’mon, Lor! Suck it up and do something!* She gulped, still fearful that the ghost might come near, but managed to school her breathing to something a little more regular, if ragged. *It’s just a Pokemon… just a Pokemon…*
“R-right…” Lori maximised the three balls and drew back her arms. “Pipster, Triss and Chico! I choose you!”
Her Piplup, Snivy and Minccino respectively coalesced on the island all standing ready for battle.
"Um, is she okay?" found its way into Douken's head, hearing from Reep who can see the poor girl's fright. "I doubt she would be able to move at all at this rate."
"You're right," Douken replied before cupping his mouth, magnifying his voice over to Lori. "Hey! Calm down or else you won't be able to stand a chance! Remember, your Pokemon can feel your emotions which in turn can effect them as much as you! Take a deep breath and get your head in the game, because I do not hold back!"
"Now then," the referee stated, "If both trainers are ready, begin!" Flags up: the sign to go!
"Maya, Dive! Sabre, Sky Drop! Reep, Will-O-Wisp!"
With a quick breath, Maya took advantage of the water provided by the battlefield and dove down, swimming about freely over to the enemy's side of the field. Sabre, however, flew forward, grasping the Snivy in his claws before flying high upwards, holding the grass snake to try and prevent it from fighting back. lastly, blue balls of flame began to form between Reep's hands, getting shot off at the Piplup with a quick attempt to burn the penguin.
*Oh, God! If this guys know I’m nervous then I must be really failing out here!* Lori berated herself harshly for being so obvious with her fear for Ghost-type Pokemon. The other trainer’s urging of her to man-up fed her recovery but not fast enough as he took the opportunity to call the first move.
“Oh no!” Lori cried, unable to comprehend everything that was happening on the field so quickly after the flags had been dropped. Why on earth had she agreed to a Triple battle?! She’d never participated in anything but a simulation and none of her Pokemon had even seen a Triple battle.
Without even as much as an opportunity to dodge, Triss was snatched from the ground by that horrific bird made of blades which left Pipster and Chico to defend themselves against whatever came next. The boy, Douken, ordered a Will-o-wisp move which centered on Pipster as it floated horrifyingly towards him.
“Chino!” Chico dove for Pipster, his whole body flooding with a golden light which drew together in his front paws. Gripping Pipster by the wing, that stored energy seeped into the penguin and Lori thanked her lucky stars that she had such a wonderfully fast and faithful Pokemon with her.
“Yeah, Chico! Helping Hand!” Lori confirmed the move, “So Pipster use Hydro Pump!”
With a shout, Lori’s Piplup opened his beak and let forth an all-consuming torrent of water that fizzled out the incoming balls of flame and shot straight for the Dusclops on the other side of the arena.
With the Dusclops holding her arms out in front of her like an X, she stood there and took the attack, trying to reduce the impact as much as possible. "A Pokemon and Trainer should be able to use the terrain to his or her advantage, especially considering people say hitting water from a high height can be about the same as hitting cement." Holding his hand up, he pointed up at Sabre, calling out, "NOW DROP!" before throwing his hand downwards.
With the Skarmory letting go of the Snivy, he let the grass snake fall a little before flipping over and going into a straight dive, beak at the stomach as he pushed the grass snake down at the water fast before stopping himself, letting the Snivy crash down in a large splash. What came next was Maya from below, ramming the Snivy from the back into the air and onto the island before she popped her head back up.
"Reep, use Curse!" Collecting her life energy into her hands, she fired it off, aiming at Chino, though whoever got hit by it would not take damage, but have a bruise-like mark on them shaped as her mask.
“No, Triss!” Lori cried as her poor Snivy received a double-whammy from above and below. Her Snivy screamed, unable to dodge a thing under such conditions and flopped back to the ground weakly. Without even having used a single move of her own, Triss was on her last legs. Lori’s brow furrowed. “Giga Drain on the sealion!”
A glowing green aura instantly surrounded Maya and a flood of energy drew back to the Grass Pokemon. With a little less effort, Triss managed to get back to her feet but not before that Ghost thing was attacking again.
“Chiiinnooo…” Chico shuddered visibly as the curse settled on him, a skull-like mark darkening on his chest. Lori raised a hand to her mouth in shock, wondering what a Curse might do. Would it give Chico bad luck for the rest of his life?! She looked back at the Dusclops. It faltered as it completed the move…
*Curse weakens the Ghost when it uses it… I know what to do for moves like that!*
“Chico, use Encore on the ghost! Pipster use Icy Wind on the bird!”
The Minccino immediately began to applaud his opponent, packets of confetti bursting all around the Dusclops to encourage it into using the exact same move on the Chinchilla. At the same time, Lori’s partner penguin drew in a deep breath and then expelled it hard at the Skarmory.
"For someone who is afraid of ghosts, she is making me wanting to use it again," Reep comment, feeling the effects of Encore, though its not like he had done this before. Maya had done the same thing, just not to something that can be hazardous to the user. As for Maya and Sabre, being at full strength, they were able to take their hits and keep standing, even if the Giga Drain did a bit of a number of Maya.
"Normally, I would follow up with Pain Split, but it looks like you gave me no choice. You may of been better timing it with the Will-o-wisp, because Reep's fall will come at a price." Readying the ghost's Pokeball, he issued, "Reep, use Curse again. Maya, Aurora Beam. Sabre, Steel Wing!"
With Reep placing her life force into her attack once again, she decided on a different target: the Piplup. And to make sure no one could jump and take the blast, the other two went and focused on the other targets. Sabre went to chase the Mincinno with glowing silver wings away from the penguin as Maya fired off a colorful beam from the waterside at the Snivy. Once the Curse wa launched, Douken returned Reep instantly, announcing himself, "Reep is unable to battle. Now there is no more ghost, but the curses stay."
That's when her mark pulsed, showing its true nature.
*Yes! It’s gone!* Lori mentally rejoiced as the Ghost Pokemon was forced back to its ball but her time for celebrating was ended almost as fast as it came. Pipster gained the same mark as Chico, a skull-shaped mark on his chest while right at the same time the bruise on Chico pulsed angrily.
“CHINO!” Lori’s Chinchilla groaned as Curse took effect, his body quivering like a leaf. Lori raised a hand to her mouth while the other took her hair in a deathgrip.
Maya’s Aurora Beam was a hard-hitting, beautiful move that Triss simply had not enough strength left to dodge. The northern-lights-projection-attack flashed and danced over the Grass Snake’s body like a kaleidoscope, the cold power from the Dewgong’s horn draining what energy Lori’s Pokemon had left. With a wail, her faithful Snivy collapsed to the dirt and lay still.
“Snivy is unable to battle!”
“Triss, return! Chico, run!”
Lori’s Minccino dashed away from the incoming Skarmory, his speed not enough as the steel bird closed in with every second… He reached the edge of the island and turned around to find the bird coming right at him. With a squeak, he was struck straight in the chest and taken off into the air. Lori watched with fright as the Skarmory climbed higher in the air, its glowing wing still carrying Chico off of his feet.
“Chino!” Chico gasped, the wing had done a lot of damage to his ribs but that didn’t mean he was out yet! With the edge of the wing gripped in his paws and his tail jammed between two hard feather, Chico held on for dear life, waiting for a call from Lori. “Use Sing, Chico!”
“Miiin, miiin chiii! Miiinccinoooo!” He crooned in his opponent’s ears.
“Right! And Pipster use Drill Peck on the Dewgong!”
Lori’s Piplup sent energy to his bill, making it glow white and double in size. Then, taking aim at Maya, jumped and span like a corkscrew. “LUUUP!”
Seeing the horror on Lori's face, he felt like a quick explanation was in order. "Curse is a move that differs if its used by a Ghost-Type Pokemon. You were right in the fact that it wore Reep out, but its toll was the Curse that is now afflicting both of your team members. If you don't take out what I have left fast, the Curse will succumb them both!"
Still, the girl did have some extra tricks up her sleeve, like putting Sabre to sleep. However, the more he climbed, the harder he was going to land, and his eyes were flickering back and forth. "Sabre, sand landing! Use it to your advantage!" With Sabre looking at his wing where Chico was caught, he smirked before pulling into a nosedive, leaning so the chinchilla would get caught in the landing and the 111 lb bird to sit on top.
With Maya getting hit in the head, Douken knew he could play the delay tactic a bit more to wait on the Curses to go through. "Maya, Dive again!" With a quick breath, the Dewgong dove back into the water, hiding away from the two foes, leaving them with the sleeping Skarmory.
And one again, both Curses pulsed.
“So that’s the trick?” Lori wondered out loud. “I have to win fast?” Her brow came down. “Challenge accepted! If I’m going to be a Pokemon Champion like my sister then I can’t give up - even when me and my Pokemon are smaller than our opponents. Right, guys?!”
“Lup!” Pipster declared as he got back up from his knees where the Curse had left him. While Chico, on very shaky legs indeed, struggled back to his feet. Likely, his last legs.
“So there’s one opponent trying to hide and another that’s a sitting duck… We’ve had to fight hidden things before, right Chico?!” Lori gave a thumbs up to her chinchilla and he set another right back. “And water-power is what you get when you’re losing strength, right Pipster?” She confirmed with her Piplup who nodded with determination.
“Alright!” Lori pumped her fists. “Hit ‘em hard this time! Chico use Swift on the Dewgong and Pipster use Hydro Pump on the Skarmory, right now!”
A smile came on Douken's face then, accepting her feelings. "That's right! Don't stand down! Come at me with everything you got as I do the same! Your Pokemon are your family, right? Well then, let your family know not to give up, and they will do the same!"
As the swift was launched, each impact sent out a small towering spray of water, following the pathway of the Dewgong as she swam through the water to into position as the rest of the spray clanged on Sabre's armor plating. And with the giant blast of water smacking into the Skarmory's head, his only response was a small moan and swirls for eyes. "Skarmory is unable to battle!" was quickly announced with the flag raised, causing Douken to return him.
"Now, attack!" launching herself from out of the water, she used the speed to throw herself into the Piplup, even if it meant throwing herself onto land and into the stars. However, it was not much worry. It would turn to one on one very soon, which Douken was ready for. Its this intense combat that brings trainers to their best.
Once again, the Curses pulsed, most likely being the last time the chinchilla feels it.
Lori felt a rush of pride for herself and her opponent when he denounced their unfaltering commitment to their Pokemon and their journeys, allowing her to discard the rest of the doubt that had been simmering under her skin since getting onto the field. She was definitely doing the right thing – becoming a Pokemon Trainer was the best thing she had ever done and her team really were her family. Sure, she had lost a bunch of battles and even suffered an embarrassingly quick defeat in her first Gym battle but quitting wouldn’t prove a thing – only working hard and getting stronger would get her where she wanted needed to be!
“Minccino is unable to battle!”
“Baaaawwh!” Lori groaned, holding up a green capped Pokeball and recalling Chico as he slumped into the hard-packed dirt. Her eyes left the other combatants for only a moment but the cries of her Piplup were enough to recognise that Douken’s Dewgong had continued its assault.
“Piiiip-luuuup!” Pipster struggled back to his feet, the curse mark of the Ghost Pokemon throbbing darkly on his chest. The little penguin puffed and panted to his feet, exhaustion obviously playing on his every limb.
“C’mon, Pipster!” Lori cheered him on hopefully, “I know you can do it! Give it a Drill Peck one more time!”
“Luup…” Pipster began to run at the Dewgong, his beak swelling in size and glowing a bright white. He lifted his short wings and fluttered them weakly, attempting to throw himself into an offensive spin but the energy simply was not there. Instead, he settled for a basic Peck and charged his opponent.
Lori blinked. It was over. There was no way Pipster could win if he was too weak to use his best moves for the match. She held back her breath as he partner dove into battle one more time, already knowing that her path in the competition was over.
"Maya, Headbutt!" The two moves clashed into each other, both standing there as the Dewgong's horn found its way at Piplup's belly as his beak found the top of her head. Both bodies stood there tired, until one finally fell.
"Piplup is unable to battle, making Douken Sota the winner!" With the flag raised to Douken's end, it was official. The match was over, having Douken proceed to the next round.
"Well done, well done!" applauded the suited man as he walked onto the field, patting the Amazon's back. "Not like it should be any worry. How else could a rookie trainer like her defeat a two-badge holder like yourself? It was yours from the get-go."
Douken turned his head and glared at the man. "You make it seem like it was a complete sweep. as you can see, she has the skill, tactics, and guts of a true trainer to bring me to the point on the field you see right now. If you doubt me, why don't you take her on yourself?" it was enough for him to lose his nerves and walk off. With a small sigh, he turned around and walked over to the other side of the field, holding his hand out.
"It was a good fight," he told Lori, "I'm sure if you didn't start so shaky, you would of been able to win that. Keep that confidence and I am sure you will do well in the future."
That was it. It was over.
Lori felt that all-too-familiar ball of frustration, sadness, anger and shame that always seemed to grow when she lost a battle settle in her throat. Another day another loss and she still didn’t know truly where she was going wrong. Maybe she could ask Kino? Was her strategy still not good enough, even after reading those chapters in the training manual that Joey had? Were her Pokemon not gaining the sstrength that they should have at their level?
*Maybe they need to evolve…But I can’t even help them do that, can I?* Lori scolded herself, reminded of the failure of Triss’s evolution in the Fidona Pokemon Gym.
“Pipster!” Lori brought herself back to reality and away from her self loathing, jogging to her partner’s fallen side and scooping him up carefully. “Are you alright, Pipster?”
“Luuup…” Pipster moaned weakly, his eyes barely open enough to look back at his trainer. Those eyes held tears that had not been born of any physical pain. Lori held back her own with great difficulty.
“You don’t need to say sorry,” she interpreted his moans perfectly, “I know you did your best – am I’m so thankful that you did. You’re the best Pokemon ever, Pipster.”
“Pip… Piplup…” He whispered back, slumping in her grip.
“Time to rest – you deserve a long one.” Lori stroked his brow once with soft fingertips and then held up his green Pokeball. “Pipster, return.”
With her Pokemon all safely back in their balls, Lori wiped off her sweaty palms on her dress and sought out her opponent. He was talking to some guy in a suit but was soon hurrying towards her. She accepted his handshake and made herself smile through all of her disappointment. He offered her some kind words which, admittedly, lifted her mood but a loss was still a loss to Lori.
“And congratulations to you, too, Mister Douken.” She bowed her head. “I hope you win now – I can’t lose to anyone other than the best, y’hear?” She waved him goodbye and left the arena, unsure of where to head next since she was out of the tournament already. Maybe the main area would have some stalls or other competitions she could participate in? Whatever the case, her tired Pokemon all needed the attention of Nurse Joy.
With a win and a loss under her belt, Lori Pardare made for the tournament village.
