PANE: Darryn Kellor

“So… down, huh?” Darryn gulped, looking up at the rescue worker and the gaggle of trainers nearby. He couldn’t hide the insecurities that he was feeling spread across his face – it was only natural to be scared of the unknown that faced them in the dark cavern that awaited them – but damn did all of those eyes on him make everything seem so much more intense.

He was given a firm, reassuring nod from the rescue worker and before he could think about finding an excuse not to, the Co-Ordinator found himself leaning backwards over the void and edging backwards.

*Roselia. Minccino. Kingler.* Darryn read off the Pokemon at his disposal as he left the edge of the blasthole behind and his feet met nothing but air. There was a hort, sudden drop as the harness around his waist snapped taught and the cord connecting him to the ground above groaned under his weight. Breath caught in Darryn’s throat as he swung there for a moment, the dark of the underground facility capturing him as effectively as a Pokeball. *Probopass. Stantler. Gallade.* He continued, air rolling over his face as the decent continued.

Looking up, Darryn could see other dark shapes on rope descending from the same irregularly-shaped hole in the black sky and wondered who had chosen to follow him.

*Please, please, please be amazing, experienced Trainers!* He wished selfishly.

*****

“Troooode.” A black ash-covered ball moaned under a pile of rubble as Darryn touched down under the poison field and into the battleground facility. The ground clicked audibly under his shoes – squeaking as he dragged his sneakers underneath him to stand firmly on the ground once more. The harness was shed swiftly and the Co-Ordinator took several steps away from the landing area to clear some space for the other trainers joining him.

Darryn panted freely, drawing in breath as his heart began to slow with the relief that he was no longer on the end of a dangling rope. Intensely glowing lights above head-height but set into the walls rather than the ceiling illuminated a long corridor that reached out for nearly twenty untouched metres before it cut off abruptly in a tangle of rubble and sparking wires. Black scorch marks around the destruction along the corridor mirrored those around the Co-Ordinator’s feet, indicating only one thing: another Electrode had fallen down here, rolled, then Exploded. Beyond the secondary blast hole, a soft orange light coloured a lingering cloud of dust that would welcome the rescuers to the next stage of their excapade.

“Aw… come on.” Darryn moaned, running a hand through his hair and turning back to where he had come from, ready to meet any trainers that had joined him on the underground mission.

PANE: Darryn Kellor

Down the figures came, from the light above and into the dark below, descending towards the ruined hallway in which Darryn waited. Dark silhouettes slowly approached, shadowed faceless forms that would help him with the rescue effort, but were suddenly joined with screams of terror from above and a final dark form that began to fall towards the Co-Ordinator with frightening speed. The suspended trainers, hearing the cries from above, kicked with alarm as their ropes were yanked skywards once more while the large spherical latecomer fell past them at high speed.

Darryn turned and ran, the terrified howls of "Electrode!" from the people holding the cables above filling his ears even as the thud of the Pokemon crashing into the ground behind him echoed along the hallway.

BOOOOOOM!

Before Darryn had time to register that the Explosion behind him would likely have sealed the tunnel shut and that he was completely alone under the battlefield, the force from the blast had thrown him far down the tunnel and hard into the polished ceramic tiles that made up the corridor. Pain wracked his body, fire burning up through his knees, elbows and palms where he had slapped down onto the slippery floor. Miraculously his face hadn't hit the floor but that was little consolation for the ringing in his ears and the pain in the rest of his limbs.

"Ugh..." Darryn moaned, fighting every urge in his body that wanted him to remain still and rest for a while, maybe catch some Zs, and struggling to find any limb that would agree to find its way beneath him. "Dammit..." He muttered, sitting up slowly and slumping back against the wall, looking back the way he had come.

True enough to the Electrode's Explosion, the corridor that had been illuminated by a shaft of light from the open hole in the battlefield had been replaced with a mass of broken rubble and debris. The Co-Ordinator offered the corridor a few choice expletives, running a numb hand back through his hair and squeezing his eyes shut in frustration.

Why is it always me!? What's wrong with being normal for a change!?

<This way.> A voice blossomed in Darryn's mind, singing like a thousand Combee in a thunderstorm. Darryn flinched, snapping his head to the side.

<Who's there?>

<Danger awaits.> The voice intoned once more. <Danger from above. Danger from below. Danger here.>

<Well, duh...>

<Hurry - this way.>

<Who are you? Why should I trust you?>

There was a long pause. Whoever had decided to reach Darryn went quiet, their psychic presence fleeing from his mind momentarily. Although not a true psychic himself, Darryn's telepathy only really worked through his emotional link to another person or a Pokemon. In this instance, however, a psychic had approached him first and opened the connection - reopening it was impossible without another psychic to do it for him since he didn't know who or what he was speaking to.

<Wait.> The voice made its hesitant return. <I come.>

A warm wind blew out from the depths of the subterranean research facility, stirring Darryn's hair as he turned to look into it. Almost as instantly as the wind came, so did the Pokemon. Then, almost as suddenly as it arrived, it was gone. Darryn blinked.

<Follow.>

Poised where he sat, Darryn considered his options before moving. It didn't take long - his options were few, after all - and with stiff, aching legs he pushed himself up and trudged off into the depths of the tunnel after the legendary Pokemon, Entei.

Jill Cortoma

A little bit late for her being, actually she was ALWAYS late so that wasn't valid for an excuse, she had tagged along with one of the rescue-workers that had come to fetch her. Unknowingly she'd been staring off into the crowd, not even noticing all other volunteers had moved forward towards the hole underneath the Poison field. At least she was lucky, or perhaps not so lucky, that the rescue-worker had been standing in her near her when she had been shouting and had wondered where the Quite-Shouter had disappeared off to. Nowhere it seemed.

Just in time she arrived to see Darryn, the fashionable Co-ordinator she had to battle, descend down the large gaping underground. She was asked to stay back until another harness had been pulled back up so she too would be able to descend as well, they were lacking in material so there was no other choice. Her thoughts wondered back towards that odd voice she'd been hearing... what was that all about? Troubled by it she shrug her head and walked past the rescue-workers who were helping other trainers down the gap, getting near the edge at the side that was rendered unsafe to descend and peeked down. The darkness went down deep, but she could faintly see how the light touched the rubble beneath. Bending over a bit more the darkness seemed to fade and make way for another scenery. The depth in front of her became brighter and a small curtain of mist stretched out in front of her... she heard the rumbling of water... lots of water. It seemed as if the ground underneath her started to shake violently and the next moment a burst of water busted through the edge, filling the hole with water. A waterfall.

Fear took a hold of her body and she couldn't move anymore. Her muscles rejected the orders her body gave them and she stood paralyzed, one foot on the edge, almost entirely bend over. She could feel how the hole, the deep wanted to swallow her whole and she tried to get back, in vain however. Slowly she started to bend even more, until a loud bang made her body jolt backwards. The waterfall and mist disappeared and returned the gap that was in front of her. An illusion...?

Another bang, this time closer. Screaming and a large cloud of dust and debris flying around snapped her out of her thoughts and returned her to reality. Electrodes. That's what they were screaming. Rescue-workers desperately tried to pull their comrades and the volunteering trainers back out of the hole as the volley of Electrodes kept on coming. Jill ran over to the nearest rescue-worker and started pulling the rope as well, then extending her hand towards the people that crawled over the edge, out of the gap. Shouting. Looking left she saw how a rope was about to snap and she reached for a pokéball on her belt. The next moment an electrode dropped next to her and exploded, flinging her away as if she was just a napkin.

A vicious pain shot through her right arm and she felt how the flesh on her arm tore open as she slammed into a nearby wall. She could feel how a piece of edged stone pierced through her upper arm and how a warm liquid started to spread over it afterwards. Her entire arm went numb and she could barely put enough weight on it to get herself unto her knees. She moaned softly as she shook her head, which wasn't such a good idea at first though, it hurt incredibly. The dust surrounded her and her sight was blurry, on top of that her ears were constantly being terrorized with a high-frequency tone. At the same time that voice once again resonated through her mind.

<Hurts, doesn't it?>

"Ugh...What...?"

<I can help you if you want...>

"Wh-who's there...?"

<I've helped you before...you can trust me...>

"..."

<I'll take over for now, just relax.>

After that, Jill's mind went blank.

My body...
is made out of swords.
Iron is my blood
and glass is my heart.

I have overcome countless battlefields undefeated.
Not once have I retreated,
Nor once have I been understood.
Always alone....
On the hill of swords...
intoxicated by victory...

Thus, this life has no meaning...
This body...surely was...
Made out of blades.
