I noticed a few people had (or claim to have) shinies...

How exactly do shinies work in this game?

The shiny rate is glorious classified information.

It's just random. All there is to it.

yes but what i, and possibly the OP, are wondering, is how on earth do we tell if a pokemon we have is shiny or just naturally looks sort of glossy, and does being shiny or not shiny affect anything.

Uh.... shiny Pokémon are different colours. That's it.

so unless you get multiples of every pokemon, you might never know if you have any shinies? that seems kind of lame..

It tells you if a Pokémon is shiny or not when it hatches anyway.

Actually, the colors are usually completely different than the pokemon's normal color. Look up a pokedex- like serebii.net's- and it'll show you shinies. c:

Hello, children! Today, I will tell a story; a story of the creation of the universe.

Be warned, as this story may contain harsh language and conflict with your entirely incorrect religion! You have been warned!

*ahem*

Spoiler (click to showhide)

And that is how the universe was created! Over the years a few bits were lost in translation, like the No-Breakfast Pillar became the "Spear Pillar" and the Breakfast Flute became the "Azure Flute", but it is still mostly intact. So long as you don't listen to those ****ing communist-ass Pokedexes. Feel free to PM me if you want the full story on the origin of any of the other legendary Pokemon!

I'm clicking back again, so feel free to help me out.

Enough is enough. No more of your constantly demeaning comments, or you're going to get warned. Don't even reply to this post by posting either, just read this, heed it, and move on.

well considering that my last experience with pokemon was almost 10 years ago when i traded cards in Elementary school, you can hardly expect that i've memorized the appearance and name of every pokemon. When i get an egg, i generally have no idea what it's going to hatch into, and even if i know it's name, most of the time i still don't know what it is.
Also, i've noticed that in the last few years, they seem to have added a lot more pokemon than i remember there being. call me old fashioned but I liked the old ones better :P

We have a PokéDex here too, http://dex.gtsplus.net/

You could also use the huge gallery we have to see shiny Pokémon, http://gallery.gtsplus.net/
