Jason jumped as Larke heard him, and gulped. He decided that, from now on, he wouldn't comment without saying it louder, and aking sure it wouldn't offend her. He sighed, and slunk off behind her. "So I'm probably going to be the pack mule, huh?" He asked, trying to keep his mind off of all the astards on the streets right now.

procession

The air was cold and chilly. He wasn’t entirely sure why he had come here, but he had. He figured it was a good idea at the time. He would soon be proven wrong.

Blue, the serious Riolu, stared at the gates in front of him and his master. He stood before Celino and made sure that nothing could go wrong. He hoped that it didn’t – Celino thought the same thing. The wind rushed past and almost knocked Celino over since he hadn’t been expecting it. Blue covered his ears because of the noise. Celino was generally unfazed by it.

Pride knocked on his pokéball and shot a bit of electricity at it accidentally, as he was a Pichu and couldn’t quite control it yet. He wanted out though, that was sure. He wouldn’t be getting out anytime soon. He didn’t know how scary this God-forsaken (quite literally, it seemed) place was. Celino wrapped his fingers around the bars of the gate, rust getting on his fingers. He grimaced and pulled his hands back, wiping the debris off onto his pants – regretting it almost immediately because he now had rust-coloured pants. He groaned and sighed, gave up, and placed his hands on the bars again.

What he didn’t realise was that there were hundreds of eyes staring at him all at once. Once the gate swung open with a loud creak and squeak, he wiped his hands off on his shirt now and looked up when he was finished. The eyes flickered and followed his movements exactly. They were quite red. A few even disappeared and reappeared – though they seemed as if the owner of the eye only had a single one.

The collection of eyes startled Celino slightly. He tensed up, and Blue immediately noticed it. Celino waved a hand to dismiss it, giving a shaky smile. He shook his head and gave a few signs to Blue to further assure him. You see, Celino is deaf and usually his Pokémon are the only ones that understand him – Blue being the best and Cut the Nincada being the worst at it; Pride was okay, but he wouldn’t admit that, of course.

Blue snorted, evident in the way that he performed the action. Celino gave a nervous laugh – still capable of that feature – and turned back to staring at the staring eyes.

It suddenly turned chillier, colder. Celino noticed, once he crossed his eyes for a moment, that his breath cold be seen. His teeth began to chatter and he rubbed his hands together. He pulled his hat down further over his head.

And that’s when he saw the bottom of it. It was grey and all wishy-washy. It disappeared and reappeared. He pulled his hat up a bit more, a bit higher than it originally was, and a large mouth was staring at him. He was frozen in place completely. The face looked like it could eat him, outlined in gold.

It moved toward him. He gave a frightful scream, pivoted on his heels, and darted as fast as he could. Blue, a little startled by the scream, took a few seconds before following. However, he was too late to warn Celino about the impending hole.

Celino took a tumble, almost Alice in Wonderland style. However, this fall was quite shorter and random things didn’t float next to him as he fell. He did twist and turn though; because of this, he managed to hit his head off of a rock. The injury wouldn’t be serious, though it did knock him out. He landed at the bottom on his stomach with a sickening thud.

Blue jumped down quickly, standing next to his master. He didn’t panic though. He sat down in front of Celino, pulled the hat off (which he then put on his own head to make sure he didn’t lose it), and brushed away the hair. There was only a slight sliver of blood, but it wasn’t fatal. He figured Celino would be dizzy and have a headache when he woke up, nothing more.

Larke crossed her arms and rolled her eyes at Jason. The boy was really pathetic; it seemed that her voice scared him whenever she spoke with authority, even slightly. Hell, he was probably just simply scared of her and the authoritative tone only fueled this fear to get more intense. Maybe she could use that to her advantage to get him to obey quicker and lose less time.

"I didn't think of that, thanks for the idea," the Swiss girl said with a slight smirk. If she tried hard enough, maybe she could break his will and turn him into a submissive mutt? That would be perfect, having an obediant slave. Those were getting rare these days, since everyone tried to rebel for whatever reason, even if it wasn't remotely good.

"Gie, you'll be the pack mule, if that's what you wish," she added dryly, shrugging as if she didn't care. Making him feel like an idiot was her obvious goal here. He would probably mentally berate himself and decide to obey since she seemed more intelligent. Well, she probably was the more intelligent one, so that wouldn't be too hard, right?

"Now let's stop wasting time and let's go," she said, turning around and starting to walk away, expecting Jason to follow her. However, after only a few steps, a scream, more like a shriek, echoed from above, making Larke flinch slightly thanks to how unexpected it was. A few seconds later, a sickening thud sounded from behind her and Jason, as if someone had fallen down from a high place.

The purple-haired girl turned around out of curiosity and saw, to her surprise, a boy, who looked around two or three years older than her, on his stomach along with a Riolu, who was wearing a hat. Quickly figuring out that the Riolu probably belonged to the boy, she walked up to the new arrival and realized that he was, in fact, knocked out cold since he wasn't moving at all, except for the regular breathing motion that made his body move slightly as his lungs were filled with air and then emptied a few seconds later.

Ignoring the Emanation pokémon, she crouched down to get a better look at the boy. His outfit was fairly colorful, mostly consisting of orange and yellow with a bit of black, which was barely visible. Those colors clashed with his hair, which, upon further observation, seemed to actually be a very pale shade of blonde instead of white, as she had originally thought. This would mean that his eyes probably weren't red and would explain why his skin wasn't pale. She got back up and lightly kicked his side three times, lightly enough for it to be harmless but enough to shake him a bit.

"Hey, destada, mat," she said as she shook him with her foot, still completely ignoring the Riolu who was probably staring at her or something to that effect considering that she just approached his trainer and visually inspected him without saying anything or even looking at it. Larke's eyes were half-opened, showing that she didn't really care about the boy. Maybe she could have a bit of fun scaring him, seeing how he had shrieked before apparently falling down the hole. Either the fall had scared him or something else did, causing him to fall. Maybe even his own Riolu, if he was the cowardly type.

Jason sighed at Larke. Great. Now he was the idiot kid who was a year younger then the girl with purple hair. He stopped a minute later and looked back, looking up at the rusting ladder that the two of them had just come down. He sighed. He was so close to being free.

He stood there for a few minutes, thinking of going back to the ladder and leaving this stupid town forever. He took a step towards it, before turning around and walked after Larke slowly. He hated himself for how much of a scaredy cat he always was.

He looked up at Larke, and stared at the back of her head. She thought she was so much smarter then him huh? Stronger? Braver? He clenched his hands in to fists, before sighing. He wouldn't have hit her no matter what she had done.... within reason that is.

Jason looked up suddenly as he heard someone yelling, and the yelling was getting louder. He looked around, before yelling in surprise as a body landed with a thump between him and Larke. He was still yelling without realising it, and cut off his scream abruptly as he saw a blue and brown pokemon next to the kid, a hat on its head.

Jason smiled at the dog-like, blue pokemon. "It's a Riolu." He gasped, reaching out to touch it. The Riolu backed away from him, before Jason remembered the boy. He saw Larke kicking the kid, and sighed knowing she probably just wanted to scare the hell out of the kid. He gulped, knowing Larke would probably kill him for this later, and took out one of his pokeballs.

He pressed the middle button on the red and white sphere, which made it grow to the size of his fist, and pressed it again. The pokeball popped open and in a blinding white flash a blue little alligator with and light red spine spikes popped out.

"Toto!" It said excitedly.

"Hey, Trident." Jason said, walking around the boy and shoving Larke out of the way. "Move over for a sec." He said.

Trident walked around to Jason's foot, next to the boy's head. Jason looked at Trident, and motioned towards the boy. Trident opened his mouth and shot a squirt of water in to the boy's face. Jason looked across the boy, and saw the tunnel the boy had fallen out of. He jumped over the boy, and looked up the tunnel.

"Larke! It goes up to the surface! Aw man, come on let's go!" He said, excited at the prospect of leaving this dump of a town.

procession

Blue stood his ground, letting out a soft growl at the girl, Larke. The Riolu stood and snapped at Larke, but retreated a bit when Larke started kicking Celino. Blue’s growls grew louder, and he latched onto her leg, trying to get her to stop.

When the other boy came by, Blue let go of Larke and stared at him. He didn’t know who he was, so he didn’t like him already. Blue’s frown was very visible as he took a short step back. The boy paused before releasing a Totodile. Blue stared at the confused water Pokémon and pulled the hat down over his head more out of anxiety. The Totodile squirted water at his master’s face – Blue would have none of that! He snarled and went to tackle the other.

Celino gasped and choked, eyes flicking open as he sat up quickly. His eyes closed tightly afterward – he was dizzy as all hell. Letting out a small grunt, he rubbed his closed eyes quickly, attempting to get all the blood that rushed to his head away as quickly as possible. It was done half in vain though, since he was still dizzy after a few minutes. He blinked open his eyes and stared up at both the girl and boy. They both looked young, probably younger than he was – despite his deceiving appearance. He brought a hand up to his head and felt around for blood, if it decided to leak; his hair was slightly damp, but not a lot. So he figured that he wasn’t bleeding too much, though his head still hurt horrendously. He idly wondered if he would hallucinate. He couldn’t hear things that weren’t there, that’s for sure.

The Italian stood up, albeit shakily. He gave out a just as shaky sigh. The girl looked a bit scary, but he was somewhat indifferent towards the boy. It seemed his Totodile had woke him up—

Argh! What was that pain in his side?! Celino clutched at his ribs frantically as Blue ran back over to him. The Riolu took off his master’s hat and held it out for him; he could tell Celino was in pain, but he didn’t want to acknowledge it. Celino gave him a weak smile and took the hat back from him. The pain wasn’t that bad – it had felt like he had been kicked several times – but just very hindering.

He put the hat back on his head, squishing several locks of whitish hair into it to keep it cleaner. He turned to the boy and signed for “thanks”, though he didn’t know if they would understand or not. He pulled his bag in front of him and began rummaging for the notebook and a pen. When he looked back up, he gasped. The boy couldn’t go up there! He would surely get his soul stolen away!

Celino dropped the notebook and pen – notebook holding past notes and whatnot – as well as his bag before running over to where he had fallen down from. The deaf man almost fell over from the sudden movement, a headache coming on. He grabbed onto the boy’s arm and began to tug, though lightly. He shook his head, closed his eyes, and continued to try to get the boy to get away.

Blue, on the other hand, had his back to his master for now. He was staring up at the girl, wondering if she was mean. She did seem that way, since she had kicked Celino. Blue made a promise to himself that the girl wasn’t allowed to touch Celino anymore, or bad things would happen to her.

Larke glared at Jason as shoved her aside to let his Totodile shoot water at the boy that had just fallen down.

"Tgi igl uffiern far ti quittas ti eis ad ageschas sco quei?" the Swiss girl spat in her native language, not caring that Jason probably wouldn't understand what she had just said. She didn't exactly expect him to understand either; it would most likely scare him, which was good, right? She crossed her arms and stared dryly at him, obviously unamused.

Well, at least the boy was awake. He made a strange sign, which somewhat intrigued her. Wasn't that called sign language or something like that? Larke did know five different languages, but none of them included sign language. Since the boy was using sign language to communicate, she figured that he was probably mute, which pretty much extinguished any of the slight interest she might have had in him. The boy's Riolu was also staring at her and she surprisingly resisted the urge to kick it after looking at it for a few seconds. She walked over the Riolu and up to the boy and Jason, shoving both of them out of the way.

"Move over for a sec," she said, seemingly childishly, yet menacingly, imitating what Jason had done to her earlier. That purple ball she had seen earlier was probably just her seeing things; no point in staying in a city that reminded her of the hellhole that was her hometown if there was nothing of interest. She hopped on the ladder and looked at Jason and Celino, looking at the latter straight in the eyes, her own eyes still being half-opened in boredom.

"I have no interest in a mute boy, let's go," she said in an apathetic tone while rolling her eyes.

Jason jumped as the boy grabbed his arm. He looked at the boy, who started making weird gestures with his hands. What was it called? Sign language? Jason shook his head, trying to tell the boy he didn't understand. He looked at Larke, seeing that she was glaring at the Riolu.

Jason looked at the Riolu, before Larke shoved him out of the way. He stumbled a few steps before catching his balance. He vaguely wondered what Larke had said when he had shoved her out of the way. He pursed his lips together, before looking over at Trident.

Trident was now the one staring at te Riolu, well, glaring. He had puffed his chest out, and was standing on his tip toes, as if trying to show that he was the better of the two. He looked at Larke again as she said that the boy was mute. "Doesn't that mean he can't talk?" Jason asked, seeing as how she wanted to go up to where the boy had previously been, but he didn't move.

"He doesn't seem to want us to go...." Jason said, standing were he was.

"Toto!" Trident suddenly shouted.

Jason spun around to look at Trident, seeing him on his back. He must have lost his balance and fallen over. Jason sighed, and took out Trident's Pokeball. "Return, Trident." He said, pressing the button in the middle. A beam of red light shot out from the white button and engulfed Trident in red light. The beam and Trident entered the Pokeball, and the red and white sphere shrunk in size.

Jason clipped the Pokebal on to his belt, and looked at Larke fearfully.

Larke rolled her eyes and sighed. This boy was even more pathetic than she recalled. She glanced at him before shaking her head. Did he really ask her what the word "mute" meant? Pathetic.

"Yes, it does mean he can't talk. That's common knowledge, idiot," she muttered. Jason then said something about the mute boy not wanting to them to go. Why would she even care? She wouldn't let a mere stranger, much less a mute boy, tell her what to do, as ironic as that sounded. He was probably scared as hell and confused by the way he had fallen in, maybe even still half-conscious. Violently, she pushed him away, not caring about that Riolu at all, and turned around, now facing the direction she had intended to go earlier; where she had seen that weird purple ball.

"Now, let's go. I want to see what that thing was. Could be useful." Larke yawned after speaking and started walking away, expecting that coward to follow while thinking about that purple thing. What could it possibly be? Had she hallucinated? Was her mind tricking her? She shook her head, chasing those improbable thoughts. It was probably a Ghost or Poison Type Pokémon, since those two types were typically purple. If so, then it would definitely be useful.

"C'mon! Don't make me drag you with me!" she said harshly to Jason, left hand on one of her chains. If he didn't obey, then she'd make him obey. He was probably too much of a scaredy cat to resist a single chain whip. He'd learn that no one messes with Larke Eischer, even if she's still young, sooner or later; probably through blood, sweat and tears if he didn't behave.

Jason looked at his feet when Larke called him an idiot. It wasn't his fault his mom had been a damn homeless drug addict. He sighed. He didn't even know how to read! Now that he thought about it, it was pathetic and sad. Sighing, he looked at Larke when she said she wanted to follow that purple thing.

Jason turned around and looked back at the tunnel. What would happen if he just ran up the tunnel now? Jason bit his lip indecisively. He looked back at the boy and the Riolu, before looking back at Larke. What was that purple thing? He thought about it for a second. It was probably a ghost pokemon... like a Ghastly or something.

Jason looked back at the tunnel, and actually started climbing it before he heard Larke say that she would force him back. Glancing back down the tunnel at Larke, his eyes widened when he saw that she was holding one of her chains.

Quickly, Jason slid down the tunnel and leaped out of it, before sprinting to catch up with Larke... or, atleast to be able to walk a few feet behind her. He stared at the chain fearfully, hoping beyond hope he would never have to see what Larke would do to him with that.
