I think it differs. Eevee looks like a kitten/puppy mix. Umbreon looks sorta like a fox. Espeon = cat. Vaporeon... cat/fox. Flareon... Wolf Cub. Jolteon looks like a cat/fox mix. Leafeon and Glaceon look like, hmm... cat mixes.

I think they all look feline in some way. I'd call them all cats.

I always thought they resembled foxes.
If you think "bunny" because of the big ears, then you should really take a look at the fennec fox: I think they're foxes. Since foxes are canines, I guess that puts my vote for dog. -------------------- |

Lol. Foxes are related to dogs, they're canines. Canis vulpes.

Eevee and Jolteon look more like dogs to me, and Espeon looks like a cat.

I'd say in general foxes. But if I had to choose between dog or cat, I'd go with cat. Most of them seem quite feline to me.

I'd personally say they were all foxes of some variety or other, which puts them closer to being canines.

In my eyes, the horrible brown mutt is of the canine variety. Thus, its evolutions carry the traits of dogs except for Espeon and Leafeon; they seem to be more of the feline variety.

In my eyes, Eevee and its evolutions are Eevee and its evolutions. Not dogs, cats, walruses or Northeastern Czechoslovakian Gerbils. Eeveelutions. Generic pseudo-mammals.
Design-wise they seem to have elements of both foxes and cats among other things, but honestly, Eevee is the only one that has a real fox tail, and Espeon's the only one that's blatantly based off a felinid (it's based on the Nekomata, a two-tailed cat youkai). Other elements vary from Eeveelution to eeveelutions - all and all they're their own creatures. >>; So, none of the above. (And for the record, Kai Reddtail - just a bit of nitpicking. There is no such thing as "Canis vulpes" beyond archaeic Linnean systematics. While foxes do belong to the family Canidae, no foxes belong to the genus 'Canis'. They belong to the the genus 'Vulpes', with several species - such as the crab-eating fox, the grey fox, the bat-eared fox and the critically-endangered island fox - belonging to their own genus. Most foxes constitute a separate tribe within Canidae. Which rather makes sense considering they have a lot of traits that are definitely not what you'd call canine.) Dude, why do you always have to come in when I start feeling smart? XD
You are right though. Thank you for correcting me so I know. But since they're in the family canidae that still makes foxes closer to dogs. lol. This post has been edited by Kai Reddtail: May 12 2009, 02:03 PM -------------------- |

I'm sorry if I sound a bit condescending with all my biology nonsense sometimes. ^^; Just a subject I'm very passionate about.
But yeah. They still are more closely related to dogs than to cats - not arguing with that. Lovely case of convergent evolution there... I still find Eevee to be Eevee, though, rather than Fox OR cat. ^^ -------------------- No longer available on GPX+ for now. Don't bother clicking me. Thank you. |

Hey no worries, that first sentence was a joking thing. It's always good to have a passion.
You're right, they are their own creatures. I suppose the question is more about what their based on or what kind of creatures they seem to take characteristics from primarily. To me, they look like they're based more on foxes than anything. When I drew an Espeon character I thought up, I used a fennec fox as a reference, but that's just my personal vision of them. When drawing pokemon, especially in cases where you try and put a little realism into it, everyone will think of them a little differently. It's all about individual interpretation, because in the end they're unlike anything we have in our world. -------------------- |
