INTRODUCTION__________________________________________________________________
This is a guide thing that will hopefully cover everything you need to know about EV training. EV training can seem like a repetitive, arduous, tedious, and ultimately pointless journey. And for the most part, it is. Why not just get an Action Replay and Pokesav anything? Because you idiots have nothing better to do in your lives than spend time with pixels, that's why. Clearly. So for those of you who fall into this category, I, Black Ice, have organized a little guide for you guys. We will cover all of the following topics in this portion of the guide:
If you still have questions or don't understand something then ask in this thread and I, or some other person with knowledge, will give you the best answer. Don't be shy to ask questions, because asking questions is one of the most efficient and obvious ways to get an answer. Anyways, onto the guide. Base Stat A base stat is a statistical value on a Pokemon that stays consistent with all Pokemon of its species. All Tauros, for example, have a Base Attack Stat of 100 which somehow calculates to a raw attack stat of 205 by level 100. The only things that can change that are EVs, IVs, and natures, which can potentially change your final stat by more than 100. Pretty big gap, right? That's why it's so important to find a good nature, EV train, and possibly IV breed, to a lesser extent. EVs / EPs (Effort Values / Effort Points) A hidden value that helps determine a Pokemon's final stats. There are some general rules that EVs follow: -4 EVs make up 1 stat point -A total of 255 EVs can be invested into a single stat -510 EVs is the max amount of total EVs for a single Pokemon. Since 4 doesn't divide into 255 so easily, it's better to just give a Pokemon 252 EVs instead of the full 255 if you plan on maxing that stat out. Since 4 EVs equal 1 stat point, and you can invest a total of 255 EVs into one stat, that'll make 63 points (255 / 4 = 63.75, and it needs to round down). IVs (Individual Values) A hidden value that also helps determine a Pokemon's final stats, but not as much. The highest IV is 31, and the lowest is 0. For each IV you have, that's 1 stat point. Simple. So if you have a Garchomp with 252 Speed EVs and 31 IVs, you'll have 333 speed. If you have 0 IVs on that Garchomp, then your highest speed stat possible is 302 (333 - 31 = 302). Simple enough, right? How to Calculate IVs To calculate IVs in every stat but HP, all you have to do is follow a simple equation: ((Math.ceil(Stat / Nature) - 5) x 100 / Level) - 2 x Base Stat - Math.floor(EV / 4). Math.ceil means to round up. Stat is your current stat number. Nature is the nature's effect on a certain stat (Adamant is 110% Attack, 90% Special Attack, so if you wanted to calculate Special Attack, you'd put .9). Level is your current level. Base Stat is a Pokemon's base stat of a certain stat (Shuckle, for example, has 20 Base HP). Math.floor means to round down. EV is your current EV investment (between 0 and 255). So, if I were to attempt to calculate my Lv. 100 Garchomp's IV in speed... Garchomp, Lv. 100 - Jolly nature (252 EVs in Speed) Garchomp has base 102 speed. Jolly nature and 252 Speed EVs gives this Garchomp 333 Speed at Level 100. ((Math.ceil(333 / 1.1) - 5) x 100 / 100) - 2 x 102 - Math.floor(252 / 4) ((Math.ceil(302.72) -5) x 1) -2 x 102 - Math.floor(63) ((303 - 5) x 1) - 2 x 102 - 63 (298) - 204 - 63 = 31. There you have it. My Garchomp has 31 IVs in speed. To calculate IVs for your HP stat, you must use a different equation. ((Stat - Level - 10) x 100 / Level) - 2 x Base Stat - Math.floor(EV / 4) Again, Stat is your current stat number, Level is your current level, and...I think 10...is a number. Base Stat is the base stat of the Pokemon (look around on Google or any other search engine for base stats of Pokemon). Math.floor means to round down. EV is the amount of EVs you put into that stat (in this equation, it'd be HP). Nature doesn't matter for calculating HP IVs. So let's do Blissey with 252 HP EVs. Blissey, Lv. 100 - 252 HP EVs Blissey has base 255 HP. With 252 HP EVs, this Blissey has 714 HP. ((714 - 100 - 10) x 100 / 100) - 2 x 255 - Math.floor(252 / 4) ((604) x 1) - 510 - 63 604 - 510 - 63 = 31 That Blissey has 31 HP IVs. Natures A nature increases one stat of a Pokemon by 10% and decreases another stat by 10%. For example, the Adamant nature increases Attack by 10% and decreases Special Attack by 10%, and Timid raises Speed by 10% and lowers Attack by 10%. The only natures that have no effect on stats at all are Bashful, Hardy, Docile, Quirky and Serious. They're generally not recommended for use. I think that explains the basics. EV TRAINING HELPERS ___________________________________________________________
This post is for all those nifty little items that can help speed up EV training. It'll still take hours upon hours to build up a single team, though. Just saying. And what would you do if you realized you did something wrong? That Action Replay is starting to look mighty attractive now, isn't it?Power Items EV training can take a very long time. That's why I'd suggest using a cheat device or something. You can still hack Pokemon that look EXACTLY the same as a normal EV'd Pokemon, you know. But for those of you without the benefit of such a godly device, Game Freak finally realised how much your lives sucked and decided to make the Power items, which add 4 to the EVs you would normally get for a certain stat. Salamence, for example, gives out 3 Attack EVs. Right? Right. Well, if you have your Pokemon hold a Power Bracer, which adds 4 EVs to the normal amount of attack EVs you'd get, you'd get 7 EVs after you beat down a Salamence instead of a measly 3. Note how 3 + 4 = 7. And if you have Pokerus, then it doubles the 7 and becomes 14. 2(3+4) = 2(7) = 14. Simple as that. But what are all the items? Here are the items and what they add to: CODE -------------------------------------------------- Power Weight | +4 EVs in HP -------------------------------------------------- Power Bracer | +4 EVs in Attack -------------------------------------------------- Power Belt | +4 EVs in Defense -------------------------------------------------- Power Lens | +4 EVs in Special Attack -------------------------------------------------- Power Band | +4 EVs in Special Defense -------------------------------------------------- Power Anklet | +4 EVs in Speed -------------------------------------------------- And where can you find them? I don't know. Google it or something. Stat-Reducing Berries And you know those berries that raise happiness but 'lower your Pokemon's ___ stat'? It actually lowers the EVs of that particular stat by 10. ...which usually ends up lowering the stats, so yeah. Here's the list of the berries and which EVs they decrease: CODE -------------------------------------------------- Pomeg Berry | Removes 10 HP EVs -------------------------------------------------- Kelpsy Berry | Removes 10 Attack EVs -------------------------------------------------- Qualot Berry | Removes 10 Defense EVs -------------------------------------------------- Hondew Berry | Removes 10 Special Attack EVs -------------------------------------------------- Grepa Berry | Removes 10 Special Defense EVs -------------------------------------------------- Tamato Berry | Removes 10 Speed EVs -------------------------------------------------- So naturally, you could use 26 of each of these on an individual Pokemon and be 100% sure that it has no EVs on it. Again, I have no idea where to find these. Google is your friend. Stat-Increasing Vitamins And then, who could forget the stat-boosting vitamins? These things are amazing. You ever had one of THEEEEEEEEEEEEEESE? Well, what they do is add 10 EVs to the designated stat (HP Up adds 10 EVs to HP, Protein adds 10 EVs to Attack, etc.). But after there are already a total amount of 100 EVs invested in a stat, you can't use these items to boost said stat anymore. So it would be common sense to use these items before EV-training. Unless you didn't have money. But an Action Replay could fix that problem for you. But then you wouldn't even need to buy these items because you could just hack those in too But why would you hack them in if you could just Pokesav your entire team anyways...? Oh, the options of hacking. Anyways, yeah. The table. CODE -------------------------------------------------- HP Up | Increases 10 HP EVs -------------------------------------------------- Protein | Increases 10 Attack EVs -------------------------------------------------- Iron | Increases 10 Defense EVs -------------------------------------------------- Calcium | Increases 10 Special Attack EVs -------------------------------------------------- Zinc | Increases 10 Special Defense EVs -------------------------------------------------- Carbos | Increases 10 Speed EVs -------------------------------------------------- You can probably buy these in a drugstore or something. No, seriously. I think there are drugstores in these games. They're in a huge shopping mall for some reason. I'm just going by word on the street though. Don't trust me on this. Experience Share (Exp. Share)If a Pokemon in your party is holding this item and does not take part in a battle, it will gain 50% EXP and 100% of the EVs it would get if it actually fought the Pokemon. If it did take part in battle and you used only one other Pokemon, you would get 33%. If it took part in battle and you used two others, you'd get 25%. And so on. And so on. -------------------- |

EV TRAINING HOTSPOTS_________________________________________________________
Here are some EV-training "hotspots" - places with many wild Pokemon that give EVs of one or two stats. So you won't find things that give 2 Attack EVs and 1 Defense EV or anything like that, which can screw up your training a little bit. CODE --HP EVs--
Where: Route 201 Who: Bidoof (1) Where: Valley Windworks Who: Shellos (1) Bidoof (1) Where: Route 222 Who: Gastrodon (2) --ATTACK EVs-- Where: Route 202 Who: Shinx (1) Where: Route 212 Who: Kricketune (2) Bibarel (2) Where: Route 208 Who: Bibarel (2) Machop (1) Where: Acuity Lakefront Who: Snover (1) Machoke (2) Where: Lake Valor Who: Seaking (2) Gyarados (2) Need: Super Rod *Unown also gives 1 Attack EV, but gives out 1 Special Attack EV as well. --DEFENSE EVs-- Where: Oreburgh Gate, Left of Oreburgh City Who: Geodude (1) Where: Oreburgh Mine Who: Geodude (1) Onix (1) Where: Ruin Maniacs Cave Who: Hippopotas (1) Geodude (1) Where: Iron Island Mines Who: Graveler (2) Onix (1) --SPECIAL ATTACK EVs-- Where: Route 204 Who: Budew (1) Where: The old Chateau in Eterna Forest Who: Ghastly (1) Haunter (2) Gengar (3) Need: FireRed/LeafGreen/Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald in the GBA slot for Haunter and Gengar. Where: Trophy Garden of Pokemon Mansion Who: Pikachu (2) Pichu (1) Staravia (2) Where: Lost Tower South of Solaceon town. So if you fight that guy with 6 Magikarp, it'll be better than that guy with 2 Staravia. By a long shot. Also, this is assuming you have both the Power Items and Pokerus. I just don't wanna type it out all 6 times. It gets kinda redundant. Also, if you don't have Pokerus, then just multiply the amount of times you have to battle the person by 2. And if you don't have the Power Item but you have Pokerus, then just get a calculator out and get crackin'. If you don't have either, good luck. HP Training
Attack Training
Defense Training
Special Attack Training
Special Defense Training Sorry about Special Defense, I don't know the levels of the Pokemon yet. So I can't suggest anything else other than to battle Wild Pokemon. If somebody could check them for me, it'd be appreciated. Speed Training

POKERUS_____________________________________________________________________
So, what is Pokerus, exactly? It's a little virus. But it's actually a good virus, so you want it. You only have a slim chance of getting it, but once you do, you'll likely want to spread it around and maybe keep an infected Pokemon around by putting it in the PC before it loses it. What's so great about it? It doubles the total amount of EVs you gain. So that 3 EVs in Attack that you get from Salamence double to become 6. Paired up with the Power items, this thing can really cut down the time needed for EV-training without them. How can you tell if you have Pokerus? Well, if you look at your Pokemon's profile on the first page (where it has the location and picture and stuff), then you should either see PkRS above your Pokemon's picture, or a smiley face that looks like ('.') near the bottom-right corner. When you see PkRS, then that means that you have Pokerus and you can still infect others. When you have the smiley face, that means that you've lost the ability to spread the virus around but the effects still remain. You can only have PkRS for a short period of time unless it's in the PC so it's best to infect another Pokemon and keep that one in the PC in case you want to infect more later on. If you leave a Pokemon with PkRS in the PC then it will never go away and you can keep infecting other Pokemon. How do you infect Pokerus to other Pokemon? First, you send out the Pokemon with Pokerus into a wild battle. You then either have the foe attack you with a physical-contact move like Tackle or Scratch, or you do it yourself. After that has been achieved, you switch to the Pokemon you want to be infected and either attack or be attacked. After that, you should have Pokerus. If you don't, try again. Alternatively, you could just walk around for about 1000 steps or something, whatever floats your boat. Note that even if you have Pokerus and EV-train with it, the max stat won't be any higher, even though the stats seem to go up higher than usual. That means that if I train my Garchomp with Pokerus, the highest it can get (with max IVs, 252 EVs) is still 333. EV TRAINING HELPERS & POKERUS COMBINATIONS_______________________________________ For you lazy people out there who don't want to do the math. This will show you what you can accomplish with Pokerus and either the Macho Brace or a Power Item. 1 EV

[insert chit-chat crap] CODE -Atk | -Def | -Sp.Atk| -Sp.Def| -Spd | +Pof ------------------------------------------------------------ +Atk | Hardy | Lonely | Adamant| Naughty| Brave | Spicy ------------------------------------------------------------ +Def | Bold | Docile | Impish | Lax | Relaxed| Tough ------------------------------------------------------------ +SAtk | Modest| Mild | Bashful| Rash | Quiet | Dry ------------------------------------------------------------ +SDef | Calm | Gentle | Careful| Quirky | Sassy | Bitter ------------------------------------------------------------ +Spd | Timid | Hasty | Jolly | Naive | Serious| Sweet ------------------------------------------------------------ -Pof | Spicy | Tough | Dry | Bitter | Sweet | ------------------------------------------------------------ When you see a +, that means that that stat is increased by 10%. Likewise, when you see a -, that means that that stat is decreased by 10%. The natures that + and - the same stat don't do anything. Nada. Zip. Zoodle. You get the point. Pof means poffin. +Pof means that the flavour is favourable, and -Pof means that the Pokemon dislikes it. As you can see, -Atk natures don't like Spicy, -Def natures don't like Tough, -SAtk natures don't like Dry, etc. Likewise, +Atk natures like Spicy, +Def natures like Tough, +SAtk natures like Dry, etc. -------------------- |

Maybe we could put some of these things onto the site instead of the forums? Liek how FEP has info on the games?
I'm pretty much finished for now, and there's a link navigation thing in the first post anyways. -------------------- |

i still dont understand how you specific evs from these pokemon a few are labeled with the ev they give but others just say points so im assuming that ALL pokemon give out eps but if thats true what ev do you recieve from pokemon that dont give out specific stat eps? and wouldent you need to start training your pokemon from level 1 to get the specific evs that you want?

effort values = effort points. 3 effort points in attack = 3 attack evs. Just a different name. so im assuming that ALL pokemon give out eps but if thats true what ev do you recieve from pokemon that dont give out specific stat eps? Yes, all Pokemon give out effort points. All Pokemon give out specific evs. A Bidoof always gives out 1 HP ev. Nothing else. and wouldent you need to start training your pokemon from level 1 to get the specific evs that you want? No, you can use rare candies until you get to Lv. 99 then ev train it. As long as you don't battle anything that gives you the wrong evs, you're fine. Also, wild Pokemon start out with 0 evs, so you don't have to go around looking for a Lv. 1 Dialga to ev train. -------------------- |

If you've fought random Pokemon then you can use berries to get rid of the evs you don't want.

Sometimes it depends on what Pokemon it is and at what level. Lower level Pokemon don't get as high stat gains as higher leveled ones, and slow Pokemon probably don't gain a lot of speed either.

... why wasn't this moved to General Pokemon? Moving. Because most of this stuff only applies for D/P. Darkrai, Modest LvL50 - HP: 134 (8/0) | Atk: 99 (30/0) | Def: 105 (20/0) | Sp.Atk: 154 (0/0) | Sp.Def: 106 (22/0) | Spd: 134 (8/0) | Hidden Power: 51, FIGHTING | Format: stat (IV/EP) Darkrai is at Lv. 50 and is Modest. HP is 134, with 8 IVs and 0 EP (also EV)s. Attack is 99, has 30 IVs, and has 0 EVs. Defense is 105, has 20 IVs and 0 EVs. Special Attack is 154 and has no IVs or EVs. Special Defense is 106 and has 22 IVs and 0 EVs. Speed is 134 and has 8 IVs and 0 EVs. When you teach it Hidden Power, it'll be a Fighting move with 51 power. -------------------- |
