PANE Pokemon

Name: Lacey St. James
Age: 19
Hometown: Fidona

Appearance: Lacey has long, black, messy hair that he generally neglects. While he does occasionally cut it, most of the time he just lets it run down to his shoulders and flows just over his eyes. It’s generally straight enough to look presentable even if it is messy; his hair is just so good at falling into place that he wouldn’t really have to do much even if he did want his hair to look really good—just get rid of the grease. His eyes are a light gray and appear to be either gray, blue, or green depending on how much light is present, though a few pigments in the upper left color of his left eye are always stained a dark blue from a previous injury, which resulted in partial-heterochromia.

Because of his previous job as a gardener, his skin is pretty tan and, because of his vegetarian diet, he is pretty slim. He generally wears only what he can find for cheap and, generally, that consists of hand-me-downs and clothes purchased from bargain stores selling used clothes. When picking clothes from these cheap sources he almost automatically keeps anything that’s mainly black or mainly green and neglects the rest. When he finds a shirt that’s too big for him, he cuts slivers out of it and then sews it back up so it’ll fit. This gives some of his shirts an even more worn look. Though, when shirts get too worn he just cuts them up and turns them into make-shift headbands or bracelets. Back home he never needed to wear much more than shorts and a t-shirt, but now that he’s away from home he sometimes wears a plaid pattern jacket or button-up shirt when it gets cold. He matches colors with his shirts so that if he’s wearing a green jacket, he’ll wear a black undershirt. Sometimes, instead of wearing a jacket, he’ll wear a long-sleeve shirt under his t-shirt. Again, he is very careful to co-ordinate the colors.

On his left arm, he has a tattoo of an eighth note and on his right arm he has one of a bleeding heart with a cross protruding through each side of it. Both of his ears are pierced and he wears small, silver studs in them. Around his neck he often wears one of his “good luck” charm necklaces. He has several though, so he keeps the others hanging from his pants or around his wrists when they aren’t around his neck. For pants, he has a variety of blue jeans and khaki pants. Then his shoes are really old and black with dark green and white trim.

Voice: His voice is very rough and generally calm and collected.

Personality: Superstition rules over him—specifically, occult superstition. Because of this obsession, he is wary of ghosts and ghost-type Pokémon as he views them to be bad luck. Though, he also believes that his good luck charms do actually work since from the time he started wearing them nobody has left him. To be fair, since he started wearing them he has avoided growing close enough for people to even think about leaving him…but the point still stands: they’ve done their job (at least as far as he cares…and he really doesn’t).

All that matters is what makes him happy and everything else can go away or die or disappear or do whatever really, as long as it’s away from him. So, generally, all that matters to him is that which he considers fun or interesting and, narrowing down that list, the pattern is that he likes to be outdoors, either for gardening, running, hiking, or simply for the sake of it, and he likes to try new things. New things keep life interesting and, hey, sometimes they surprise him and that’s almost always a good thing. All things considered, it’s only natural that he would like “new things” and, considering his childhood, it’s also just as natural that he’d like the outdoors. That, and the “outdoors” is a fairly large place, making it really easy to avoid everything he doesn’t like. Something similar could also be said of “new things” since there are so many of them; once he tries something he can pass judgement and, from there, avoidance or destruction of that “thing” is fairly simple. Generally though, he would prefer destruction…if it’s at all possible.

Oh, and he likes his Pokémon too, mainly because he finds them to be interesting—especially grass types. His first Pokémon, a Bulbasaur he likes to call Fiske, will probably always be his favorite Pokémon since he has had it for so long and it has helped him so much with his job. Though, he is also interested in catching some bug and maybe even water types since they could also help him with his gardening. And then there’s fire…kind of a love/hate Pokémon type for him since, as much as he currently likes his Growlithe, Seth, all fire types are capable of destroying nature, something he loves.

In a way, he likes plants and Pokémon more than he likes other people. His mantra is simple: no friends, no family, no lovers. While it isn’t entirely true in that he does have an older brother and, from what he’s heard, an older sister…he disregards them as family; he imagines that they don’t even exist and, if he were to meet them, he likely wouldn’t acknowledge them. Keeping acquainted though…that’s entirely different. As long as no attachment exists, relationships are fine in his book…but they shouldn’t go any farther than that. Because of his mantra, he is a rather lonely person, but, as much as it, at times, hurts to be lonely, he believes that his pain would only increase if he were to try to be anything other than lonely. Besides, it’s not like he’s ever completely alone since he always has Fiske. That, and the stars are always there at night.

Biography: His brother and sister were long gone by the time Lacey turned ten, leaving him with no company but his mother. Not that his older siblings had ever payed him much mind anyway, saying nothing of his long-gone old man. And not that his mother really counted as company either given the way she tended to stay in her own little world. So even at the age of ten he was alone, his only companion was one gifted to him out of Tradition, which he couldn’t care less about. Still, he didn’t hold any of that against Fiske, the Bulbasaur he had been given. Really, he couldn’t even afford to hold it against the Pokémon, seeing as it was him and it versus the world for the most part. A fairly small world on Fidona, granted, but it was still a world he felt had largely abandoned him. So what? It gave him one Pokémon and expected magic to happen? He wasn’t buying it. The other kids his age, all of the ones with happy families and money and a whole mess of other things he didn’t have, could buy it…but it wasn’t for him.

Rather than spend time battling or catching more Pokémon or doing all of that other stuff society expected him to go out and do, he pretty much just spent his time lounging around with Fiske. Hiding on the roof with his guitar or finding a pleasant spot to rest in the shade, he spent pretty much all of his off time—since, yeah, he did have a job at a local flower shop—resting and thinking. Sometimes he’d have to use Fiske to fight off some small-fry Pokémon around what looked to be a good resting spot, but other than that Fiske was primarily just a constant companion and co-worker. Anyway…working at the flower shop got him more gold than battling would have as far as he saw it because, hey, using a Pokémon like Fiske to battle meant having to spend money on equipment and other gear so why bother? He didn’t even need to rely on his mother for food with Fiske around, since the Pokémon was pretty good at foraging.

Things got boring though. Monotonous. And his mother was getting worse—more and more out of it to the point that he really couldn’t stand it. So, well, he couldn’t say he didn’t see it coming but he was forced to leave home for good. Not like he had really been spending much time at his ‘home’ anyway, but at the age of thirteen he left it and Fidona behind to go out and find a place to really call his. Eventually…that is. He wasn’t exactly in a hurry and spent most of his time on the road just, well, enjoying his time on the road. Sure, he had to use Fiske to battle and sometimes things really got pretty dodgy…but things were overall good. And new. He liked that, that every day was different. Even the Aridana Desert couldn’t bring him down and eventually he found his way to Baccate.

At the age of fifteen, Baccate appealed to him for a couple reasons. First, it was a pretty small town all things considered, so it was easy for everybody to at least know you existed. Not that he wanted anybody knowing too much more than that, but by that time he at least felt it was nice to have a bunch of acquaintances. More importantly though, it was a town well-known for its botany, which was something he had a great interest in. While before he had just worked at a simple flower shop, he felt that it might be nice to open up a small place of his own, maybe try to grow some berries, apricorns, and herbs. And other things too, perhaps, but first he had to find land for sale.

Or not…since, as he soon learned, land was both more expensive and harder to come by than he had first thought…not that that was saying much considering his relative poverty. At the same time though, he didn’t see anything stopping him from building on so-far unclaimed land at the town’s outskirts. So using Fiske’s vines to cut down trees, he began to build himself a small hut. It wasn’t a terribly nice hut, since it still leaked when it rained, but at least it was free. Eventually he’d have the cash to make it better, but to begin with he poured all the money he had into seeds and gardening supplies, working as hard as possible to grow something sellable. From there he brought what he grew into town on a shoddily built cart and tried his best to actually make some sales, playing what he could on his guitar all the while. At first things were pretty slow going and, for the most part, unsuccessful, but he at least was able to make his money back most of the time so there was always that.

Eventually he at least had the money to improve his housing structure though, as well as to buy the glass required for a more sophisticated greenhouse. People were at least talking about him too, so there was that. At the same time though…he couldn’t exactly compete with the already established sellers so he really had to work to grow plants unlike his competitors. For the most part that meant producing herbs that weren’t quite as bitter or that had subtle flavor shifts that may work to offset the bitter effect, but he still made some money selling berries if he worked his prices right. Meant he didn’t profit much from them, but…whatever. At the very least his time spent growing berries brought him a Growlithe, as one had snuck into his garden only to be caught. Had burned some of his plants during the process, but…oh well. He named the Growlithe Seth, not holding the damage against it too much.

Even at the age of 19 business wasn’t exactly successful or anything, but at least he was living. And he had two friends in the form of Fiske and Seth, so there really wasn’t much more he could ask for. Pretty much everybody in Baccate knew about him too, so going into town was always enjoyable, even if it meant leaving his house and garden to Seth’s watch. Maybe one day he’d leave…but for the most part he found himself pretty content experimenting with bitter herbs and growing berries and, more recently, apricorns.
