Why did nintendo chose WEP for home WI-FI hotspot, when they could of chose WPA?
This is kind of annoying because Changing it to Wep can give your internet low security or no security at all. WHY DID THEY CHOSE WEP FOR WI-FI? -------------------- |

Just to annoy us? Not entirely sure, but you're not likely to get a good answer to this unless you contact the company itself. Perhaps the DS has issues with too much security? The computer's not that big.
I'm actually interested myself, now. Anybody else have any ideas? -------------------- "Courage is the price which life exacts for granting peace..."

Not a clue here, but I heard the DSi now support WPA. =/ I ended up getting a Nintendo USB for my DS Wi-Fi needs.

Had to change my computer to WEP~ I haven't found too much of a difference security wise, but we've got decent firewalls and security programs.
It was annoying when I forgot to write down the codes and couldn't hook up my laptop to the wi-fi for awhile, though. -------------------- |

I don't know why they did that, but we had to set up a second internet router thing for my DS, and now it doesn't even work. Ugh.

Does anyone know how to change the internet connection to WEP. (if this does not belong here, then delete it. i'm thinking its a wep disscussion thread) Ask your parents or whoever set up your computer/network first. If that's you - head into your routers page (which should be in start menu -> Network -> click on router), you can configure wireless from there, but you have to find it yourself as all routers are different.... -------------------- Pokédex completion: 493/493 Services I can perform for free! I think it was because there was more accessibility with WEP but then again, I'd have to doule check that. The compatibilty was probably the concern, but if WPA is better I don't see why they didn't orriginally have the DS systems on that.
Meh, nintendo. Never saying squat. |

I'm not too sure on this either. I'm a PC Support Tech, and WPA is the better standard. WEP uses 10 character codes for passwords, and they are static, meaning they never change, unless you go and change them yourself. But thats usually not what hackers go for. They go after the Initialization Vector, or IV for short. WEP uses a 24 bit IV, which is about 16 million possible IVs, but they like the Key, never change, giving hackers more time to break it. Also, using a method called Packet injection, a connection can be breached in about 5 minutes or so.
So yeah, WEP is really unsecured, why Nintendo decided on using such an unsecure connection type, is anyones guess. My guess is they wanted to sell more of their wireless adapters because alot of people would refuse to use a WEP connection to secure their data. But who knows? If anyone can get an answer out of Nintendo, I would like to know their reasoning. -------------------- |

Because Nintendo was lazy, include a little of Blue Tomoshibi's notation of trying to sell more wireless adapters and add a possible license (money) issue with IEEE and you probably get the answer.

The sad part is, I've still got my old Linksys but I can't use it for Wi-Fi because my dad has to keep the WPA plugged in for work all the time... sigh.

The annoying thing was that I had to switch to WEP for my ds and now back to WPA for my DSi =/

I'm pretty sure it's not an issue of "Let's screw the players!" and more an issue of either the DS/DS Lite's capabilities, or a lack of a software upgrade for the DS Lite. As has been mentioned, the DSi (which has better computing power) can handle WPA just fine, as can the Wii, so it may be possible that the DS and DS Lite may not be able to handle WPA. Or, more likely, it's just that, when the DS Lite was made, Nintendo never bothered to upgrade the software used to connect to WiFi, and WPA wasn't common when the original DS was being created.
