As the title states, why do you hunt shinies?
For me, it is for nicknaming. I personally love naming shinies according to fictional characters, real-life people, or just naming them after my OCs in general. Partially, I hunt for shards too, but not that hardcore.
Sometimes, colors of the shiny in question will affect my decision as well. I kinda dislike shinies with same colors or very slight alteration of the normal colors. (Looking at you, Girafarig!)
Thoughts?
Shiny hunting gives me an excuse to collect even more Pokemon, and gives me a reason to keep hatching eggs. I like to nickname my Shinies as well, but it's not a huge reason.
My favorite thing to do around this site is to hunt shines. ^-^ I primarily stick to hunting ones I find cute, simple as that :')
Both time killer and sense of accomplishment. However, I've had this one hunt going for four years so maybe I should wrap it up soon, aha...
Mainly to pass the time. But I also hunt because there are shiny colorations that I actually like better. For example, Shinx and Swablu.
I haven't had any shiny hunts yet as I'm a new member but I definitely want to do some. For me this is all about completing my dex so getting entries from all the shinies would be awesome. Tough I don't think I end up keeping them all. As an example, I like color of normal Sableye more than I do shiny one. No point in keeping pokemon I don't like so I might as well release those pokemons so someone else can grab them from shelter.
I tend to shiny hunt in order to fill the shiny portion of the Pokedex. That and I love some shiny colorations better than the normal ones, so I thrive to get that coloration to have instead of the normal one. Plus, it keeps me pretty active on the site. c:
Mostly I'm shard-hunting, but completing that nice pokedex is tops, since I've completed most of the achievements. All remaining Hunt achievements can only be acquired reliably with shiny vouchers.
I mainly shiny hunt for a mix of looks and dex completion, but mostly the latter, hahaha. The shards are nice, too, and get me closer and closer to an arceus form, which is nice.
I do it to complete the shiny dex for the most part, but it's also the best way to spend my time on the site. There's always that thrill from hatching a shiny egg as well. :P
Completion, and it's the only thing I still have to do here aside from new explorations.
I also want shinies of my in-game teams.
I've not gotten any shinies yet but I just think it's so exciting waiting for a shiny to pop out of that egg.
It gives me something to do. And I really love certain shinies. (Like shiny Mistilil) There's also a bit of a compleationist aspect, though I am not anticipating making a shiny living dex.
whenever I start playing pokemon adoptable it is usually because of the shiny hunting... usually do hunt for shinies I really like - colour or design-wise I don't really care about completion but if I run out of favourites I shall do :p
I mostly just hunt to gather shards. I still hunt some things like Litten I already have a plate for though, just cause I like getting shinies of my favorite Pokemon
Outside of SWSH, the shines I've searched for were either for an achievement, or for some other meaning (I.E. the Shiny Koffing I was hunting was for the sake of quoting Chuggaaconroy in its description).
I hunt shinies because of completing my pokedex. It's the only way I'm going to get all those Arceus, after all.
And on top of that, I'm also using the opportunity to complete my Sprite Dex.
I hunt the ones I like the alternate colours for, I'm not gonna go for a living shiny dex, that's way too much work xD And a lot of them don't really get major changes, like Charmander or Pikachu
1) i love colors 2) it feels really special to have alternate versions of your favorites 3) the moment you Finally hatch them is so sweet and fulfilling?? literally nothing compares. and 4) it's something you can work towards relatively easily without giving the screen in front of you 100% of your attention after the initial setup! i usually shiny grind in the main series games in particular when i'm lazing around and watching cartoons/lps with my girlfriend.
I do it mainly for nicknaming, but I just love the different colors of some shinies. And I'm really trying for as much completion as I can, since as some other folks have said, I've done a lot else there is to do on the site. But nothing really compares to the feeling of finally getting a shiny!
Lemme check my Shine Recorder...
I'm currently shiny hunting Bulbasaur because I've already hatched shiny Charizard and Blastoise, and I want the full set of Kanto starters.
I haven't been working towards the other three hunts that I have active: Gulpin for the achievement, and Ponyta and Present Drifloon... I can't remember why I started these two
I haven't done many shiny hunts but I really love some of the colorations that shinies have so that's my main drive.
Though I'm still looking for my shiny Tentacool because that was my first shiny I ever saw in game (it was in Fire Red) and I ran out of pokeballs so I couldn't catch it. Guess I'm just chasing after the one that got away in that respect!
There are a lot of shinies that are simply beautiful. Take Alolan Ninetales for example: I was so charmed by it that I was happy when it came up in the previous SWSH, but didn't obtain my shiny until the hunt ended. However, I was still happy about my shiny.

Right now I'm doing a shiny race against my sister to help keep me attached to this game and as a friendly competition of sorts. Currently doing Sandygast and I'm pretty sure I'm the only person actually breeding these dumb sandcastles on the site.
My most common reason for shiny hunting is for nicknames. Whether it's after fictional characters, tributes to pets, or just bad puns. I also like to have counterparts for all my self-caught shinies from the canon games. Lastly, I've decided to challenge myself to get shinies of all the non-legendary megas. I realized I already had several, so why not go all the way?
My current shine recorder hunts:
Charmander, Shuppet, and Beldum: Need their megas still.
Pink, Black, and White Magikarp: I like their shiny colors, and I still need to go for Undaunted.
Gulpin: Pokii's Rage
Skarmory: I want a male to name after one of my OCs.
Pikipek: I temporarily cancelled this one to make room for one of the Magikarp hunts, since I couldn't resist the temptation to pick up multiple colors. Anyway, I want a shiny Toucannon named Bi Bi Birdie.
I like hunting shinies mostly for their 'rarity' factor. And because it gives me a good excuse for nicknaming 'mons after colors. Especially colors I like. But the big reason is I just like shinies.
I'm an avid shiny hunter in the actual games, so I suppose it only makes sense that that would carry over to GPX+. Of course, I have way more shiny Pokemon on those actual games than on here haha.
..Speaking of shiny hunting, I'm trying to save up to get at least a few Shine Expansions. 4 slots just isn't enough sometimes. But I'm trying to finish my current official hunts [Dewpider, Brown Jump Karp, Hoppip] first. Dewpider I'm just hunting because I love its shiny coloration/I got tired of actually playing Moon a while back, so why not hunt for it on an adoptable site, Jump Karp I'm hunting because I still need Undaunted + I wanted to see what the shiny looks like [though some people have posted theirs on the shiny thread already, so there's that], and I'm looking for Hoppip because it was on my eventual hunt list for a solid several years and from the moment I saw the character Joseph from Dream Daddy, I immediately thought of shiny Jumpluff.
I'm actually in a shiny race against my girlfriend!
My big reason for shiny hunts: I really love the colors of the ones I actually shiny hunt, or the colors of their shiny evolutions--like I love most shiny eeveelutions because they're my favorite colors. Shiny litten--that one is because I love the colors completely.
for me part of it is just the satisfaction of finally completing a hunt and because it's something to do, but mostly it's because i really love either the Pokemon or the shiny version of it!
Partly shards, mostly just to fill the shiny dex, though I'm definitely tracking my sprite dex much more avidly. Currently, the only purpose of hunting is to try to free up a slot for the SWSH so I don't have to cancel and restart a hunt
I'm currently hunting for a Shiny Aron mainly because it is my favourite non-legendary Pokemon, especially its fully evolved form, Aggron and Mega-Aggron, and I love its colors, too.
For me it's something to do, I also don't have a lot of patience for it in the games. I use this site as sort of a time killer and hunting shinies gives me a goal to work for instead of being on here with nothing to do. So far I've only been shiny hunting for my favorites but sometimes I just get a shiny egg from the shelter so that's added to my collection. In fact, my first shiny on here was a shiny Rydon that I just got as an egg from the shelter.
For completion for sure! That includes for shards too of course. Can't complete the dex without those.
I haven't done a shiny hunt yet, but when I do it'll be both for shards and because I'd love to have a living shiny dex at some point.
-Cries because a Missingno hunt would be pretty much impossible-
i love shinies.... MY PRECIOUS!!
hunting for shinies is fun.
Doing it for the Shards is more of a secondary reason for me. I mainly just shiny hunt as a Sisyphean task, because to me it's the best activity to ensure maximum efficiency - I can hatch all the eggs at the same time and simply cycle through to the next batch. This also allows me to focus on building up interactions more and other such activities. There's also the simple desire to build up a trophy case of shinies, and eventually complete a Living Shiny Dex. The only other reason I can think of is that I like hunting for shinies of Pokemon I have a particular affinity of, or at least ones I enjoy the shiny form of; the Pokemon I've gotten shinies of in the games are ones I like to hunt for.
I mainly shiny hunt for the sense of accomplishment but I also love nicknaming, the colours and making stories for shiny Pokémon. My life is rather uneventful so it gives me something to do.
i dont shiny hunt on gpx+ yet, but i do on another site (will remain unnamed to avoid possible rule break??) idk if theres really a tradeable money system here, so when i do start hunting here itll be just so i can collect them? i think my favourite shiny is PROBABLY chimchar line or the turtwig line
@gregoryk : If you're asking whether or not Pokemon can be traded on this website, you are correct in assuming that they cannot. Neither can items.
If I don't hunt for Shinies I won't get the Shards I need for Death Of The World, and so my Pokedex will go incomplete.
something to do and shards too
Shards. Also, despite being done with the Zap Plate, I'm hunting Rotom again because I'm 1 away from the complete set.
i like having a goal to pursue that feels somewhat reachable but not easy! exploration tasks scratch a similar itch, but i also like having shiny pokemon to show off, so shiny hunting can feel more rewarding.
Shiny Hunting is very satisfying when you finally achieve in getting whatever Shiny you're trying to get. I love having a goal and achieving that goal.
I like shiny hunting because shinies are rare. It gives me a sense of accomplishment when I get one!
Mostly aesthetic and to get shinies of my favorites. I do go easy on myself and target low maturity egg species & many of my favorites naturally come from the first three gens cause that's what I grew up with but not a whole lot more thought into it than that.
Definitely a theme to name them after songs especially ones that I'm listening to at the moment and/or am listening to when they hatch.
I've always had a love for collecting stuff, and shinies scratch that itch really well. It's so satisfying to get a shiny that I really want, especially a legendary or a really long hunt.
Mostly for something to do, though, I also just really like the act of shiny hunting. I love hatching the same Pokemon over and over. (And, that's not sarcasm, even though it sounds like it.) I really do love just hatching the same egg over and over. It only gets frustrating when it seems no one else is breeding the same Pokemon.
