Global PokédeX Plus Forums _ Finished RPs _ Fanfiction Contest: As the Saying Goes

Posted by: Kamaitachi Apr 25 2013, 01:28 AM

Here they are! The long awaited entries for the Fanfiction Contest!

Everyone with an active PANE profile is encouraged to vote for their three favourites. I will be weighting the scores based on people's order of preference. Your first choice gets 3 points, the second choice gets 2, and third gets 1. As with the previous contest, I will be the tiebreaker should one be needed. Feel free to explain why you voted one way or the other.

If you have an entry in the contest, you may not vote for yourself.

Voting will close on May 2nd at 11:59 pm (I extended the entry period by a day, it's only fitting to do the same with voting.)

Without further ado, here are the entries for this contest!

1. B
2. C
3. F

CCC, your post went like on and on and on and on and on... oh, did I mention on yet?
My post... I never knew I changed my name from 'Cortoma' to 'Cortana'... Ah well, close enough konata.gif

Posted by: colourcodedchaos Apr 26 2013, 07:18 AM

Even if it's terrible, I like to think it's detailed. =]

Posted by: Aura Dynasty Apr 26 2013, 12:30 PM

If that's not detailed I don't know anymore ^^, I have to say the way you write is special, I can't even find the right words to express what I think of it. (that good)

Togee's Darius Dovakin I read that and knew 'Fus Roh Dah' would be included in the post.
Jonahman10's was the most detailed one of all, and you liked it pretty much. ^^
Kamaitchi's was virtuous... it had a message hidden inside.
Douken Sota's was short, yet the point was taken in a swift manner, inspiring how he could be so descriptive in such a small text. I guess he goes by the 'Less is more' tactic. Can't blame him.

To the other guys: Hey, get over here and vote!!!! grin.gif

RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRAGH this is a really tough one you guys...

But, I'm being decisive!

I choose:
C
B
E

Two more days to vote! If you haven't done so...do it now!

Posted by: Douken Sota May 1 2013, 11:00 AM

F
B
E

Sometimes, it is really hard to read something when it seems to resemble something else (like the Dr. Who one.... it felt like a collection of big words to make one look smart...)

Posted by: Kamaitachi May 1 2013, 05:37 PM

I was impressed because all of the big words were used correctly in a way that was totally true to the character.

In that vein, I'm inclined to disagree. happy.gif

Adelaide uses intelligent language because she's very intelligent, which is something that post-doctoral physicists tend to be. Yes, there's technobabble (though Woodin cardinals, aleph-notation and transfinite sets are all real, albeit appropriated for my own ends), some of which is named after science-fiction authors, but A, it's only used briefly, and B, it has a purpose. Adelaide is trying to get back home the way she knows how, and she knows that it works because it got her here in the first place, however accidentally. Through this, she is shown to be cutting and rather mean-spirited, which Kevin (named after Kevin J. Anderson, who wrote balls-out crazypants space opera The Saga Of Seven Suns) cuts through to analyse and begin to help her get over the issues present here. She's only just arrived in Cerulean at this point - a couple of weeks at most have gone by since she fell out of the sky and headbutted Route 10. Her feelings of isolation are almost crippling, which is why she throws herself into her work with such abandon and is so horribly rude to everyone she deals with at first. Simply put, Adelaide is in a depressive spiral, and as someone who goes into them on a regular basis I can tell you that when someone is in them they're not nice people.

But hey, what do I know? I mean, sure, I wrote something that actually mattered to the character and showed her to have a deeply-held personal philosophy that she clings to as a lifeline to a world she may never see again if she doesn't get every bit of incredibly complex mathematics exactly 100% right, but that's clearly just me wanting to sound like a big ol' smartass teacher's pet. If I was real smart, I'd just have my character sit around in a pizza parlour and look for something cool to hear from an audience. Because that other stuff's for total dweebs, amirite?

Not that I'm at all put out or anything...

I am just saying that when I read yours, my brain got fried!

Posted by: Aura Dynasty May 2 2013, 11:34 AM

I had the same thing with CCC's and Jonahman's. It went on and on... I was like walloftext.gif , at the end I got the picture of what they meant, I even found mine a little bit too... uh, lame actually. :p

At least my vocabulary went up quite a lot after finishing reading everything ^^

I try to use simpler language when writing Amelia's family because of their agrarian base, but I suppose Mr. Darsay is obviously an allusion to Pride and Prejudice. Amelia herself is someplace in between the two. But personally, I find dialogue itself more difficult to write so I try to write around it as much as possible. Contrastingly, Entry C was the opposite, being mostly based in dialogue.

Overall, I felt that my story was rushed, especially towards the end.

Being a procrastinator, I'll probably be the last to vote. I liked all of the stories but here is how my vote goes;

1. B
2. F
3. C

THERE ARE RESULTS!!!!

I'm really happy with the results of this Fanfiction Contest. We had six lovely, well thought out entries. But, sadly, only three people can claim the top prizes. So, without further ado:

Honourable Mentions (click to show)

Third Place (click to show)

Second Place (click to show)

FIRST PLACE (click to show)

You may post for your TM/Move Tutor moves of choice here, or via PM to me! Thank you everyone for participating!

Posted by: Toogee May 3 2013, 05:56 AM

Anywho...

Can I save my TM moves for when Darius gets more pokes?

Finally...

I WON! I NEVER WON FIRST PLACE BEFORE! I'M SO HAPPY!

Posted by: Douken Sota May 3 2013, 10:03 AM

To be honest, I thought only thequote was required, not a background story, so I pretty much pulled something out of thin air for mine ^^; So part of me isn't surprised that i didn't get a thing. But congrats 2G

Posted by: colourcodedchaos May 3 2013, 04:06 PM

Well done, Toogee! And yeah, your piece was really good and deserved first place. =]

Posted by: Toogee May 3 2013, 04:44 PM

On a sidenote, Bindy will hopefully become PANE's first charizard. Tuesday's Dante is officially on notice devil.gif

Posted by: Aura Dynasty May 4 2013, 07:27 AM

congrats Togee! And when Bindy becomes the first Charizard then Darius will be a real Dovakiin ^^

Posted by: Kamaitachi May 4 2013, 12:13 PM

Congrats Toogee!

You may absolutely save the TM/MT moves for when Darius has more 'mons. ^_^.gif Just don't forget that you have them. For that matter, Yzarc still hasn't claimed his prize from the last FF Contest.

In any case, I'll put my requests here:

Orin - Frosslass - TM13 - Ice Beam
Bachi - Nidoking - TM26 - Earthquake

Posted by: colourcodedchaos May 4 2013, 02:44 PM

Say, Kam, do you want Orin to have Ice Beam for the fight I'm writing? I think it'd be a useful last-throw-of-the-dice against the Haunter she and Mantyke are facing off against. =]

Posted by: Kamaitachi May 4 2013, 02:50 PM

Why, that seems like a lovely idea.

Posted by: Jonahman10 May 4 2013, 03:30 PM

I still haven't redeemed my prize from mine either, but I am saving that for something special...

Congratulations Toogee and Kamaitachi, you guys did very well this time.
