Progressive rock, or prog rock for short, is a style of music characterized by long instrumental sections many instruments and symphonical influences. Examples on bands are: Genesis, Porcupine Tree, Bigelf, Magic Pie.
It seems to be most popular in England. I'm very much into this kind of music and is inspired by it when I write my own music, but many people seem to never have heard of it. So do you listen to progressive rock and if so what bands are you into? You might even find some new bands to listen too. My personal favourite is Porcupine Tree. I like have they use synthesizers in combination with electrical (and sometimes acoustic) guitars. -------------------- |

i don't listen to straight-up prog rock too often but i like some progressive sludge metal bands from the georgia scene like kylesa, baroness, and mastodon
king crimson is wonderful too and is probably my favorite classic rock band altogether what i dig the most of progressive music is when it has a ton of airy atmosphere and blends in elements from new age or world music, especially taking a lot of themes, cues, imagery, etc. from eastern culture/philosophy/spirituality. bands like cynic and tool do this, incorporating traditional eastern instrumentation/music theory into their songs and themes related to hinduism and buddhism and stuff. i find it really neat and thought-provoking and often just really nice to listen to when bands do stuff like that. -------------------- |
