It's for seeing eggs in the Daycare, it's for if you're breeding two different Pokemon.

Not useful though if you breed with Ditto/breed 2 pokemon of the same species.

I have a question about the Silph Scope, does it let you see whether your daycare eggs will hatch out to be shiny or not? I am saving money to buy one but if it doesn't show whether they are shiny or not then I don't think I'll buy one right away.

No it doesn't show you that. All it shows are the eggs' pictures instead of the generic lab egg pic.
