Global PokédeX Plus Forums _ Pokémon Debates _ Grass type haters must read this.

wave.gif Hello, I'm here to debate weather grass haters are true grass haters or not. I've allways loved grass types. But I realized lots of people don't like them. Why is this? confused.gif I think bulbasaur is cute. love.gif And what about shaymin, it's a grass type too, then how can so many people be infatchated with it? If anybody is out there listening to me, can you tell me why lots of people hate grass types? :(And if you hate grass types mabe you should rethink thier advantages.

Other than Shaymin with it's Chia pet uberness and Celebi, most grass types have terrible stat distribution and run-of-the-mill move pools..
They aren't really anything spectacular..
If I'm not mistaken the Pokemon with the most type disadvantages happens to be part grass type.. Snover.
The grass type starters are always the 'hard mode' on the Pokemon games as well.. since they have so many disadvantages.

The only good ones I can think of are Torterra, Sceptile and Roserade, not counting the two legends mentioned above..
Which is an extremely slim number out of the.. roughly 58 grass types. >:

Posted by: pokesuperspriter Sep 15 2009, 07:30 PM

My very first grass type was bulbasaur. Ever since then I loved grass types. All grass types are unique. Just like all the other types in the pokemon world. I always chose grass types as the starter exept treco, it's kind of ugly.

Celebi rulz!!!! blargagh.gif

Ivysaur Ivysaur Ivysaur Ivysaur <3!
Meganium is sweet too.

I love grass types. Even with their disadvantages they are great pokemon and can be very strong.

Posted by: methuselahalchemist Sep 26 2009, 10:07 PM

I've never liked Grass-types that much. I almost always choose the Fire starters, so Grass-types just come over as weak to me. The Grass starter's are okay, but I don't care for plants in general, so I don't like many others. I love Shaymin, though. And Celebi's cute.

Not in Generation II
Since the first gym has flying type good luck with Chikorita...

I always disliked using early caught grasstypes since there were so few who had any good moves...
I caught a Budew in Platinum, it had Mega Drain and Bullet Seed as its STAB moves and they sucked...unless I fought a Pokčmon weak to grass...and it had no other good moves either so I boxed it pretty early facepalm.gif
After battling Elite Four once more however I started to realize maybe having a grass type wasn't such a bad idea still...since Ground/Water types aren't too rare, (Whiscash, Quagsire and Swampert) so I started training a Sceptile.
At least Leaf Blade isn't bad for a grass-move:3 (Grass types are mostly just a pain in the ass to train from scratch XD)

Posted by: suzyk Sep 29 2009, 12:08 PM

I don't hate them, but they're pretty useless unless you're facing a Ground-type. Tropius is my favourite grass type Pokemon. tropius.gif

For example, I KO'd Jasmine on Gold with my Meganium. Her Steelix seriously sucks.

Actually, my Chinchou was of more use, but whatever.

I'm guessing it's because they have so many weaknesses. Also, people like fire types so much, so yeah. I myself don't hate grass types (I mean c'mon, I'd have to hate these guys if I did ---> treecko.gif grovyle.gif sceptile.gif leafeon.gif celebi.gif shaymin.gif (not the only ones I like but definitely my faves)

I mean I normally didn't pick grass types for starters until 3rd gen, but that didn't mean I didn't like them. And they're very useful when you start running into Quagsires and even worse Swamperts.

Grass Knot + STAB + Super Effective = NIIIIICE

Posted by: Mr Nightmare Sep 29 2009, 11:06 PM

Grass types are cool, that's why I love Venusuar.

Posted by: berry314 Oct 4 2009, 11:26 AM

I like grass types, but I don't choose the starters because fire types seem better to me.

A fire/grass combo is nice, I just send the grass against whatever could harm my fire, and my fire at what can harm my grass.

Excluding Shaymin, I like:

Roserade
The Bulbasaur family (Even though I tend to choose Charmander )
Vileplume

I don't like Toterra because some people I know say it's better than Infernape. IT IS NOT D<

Posted by: Zaloog Jan 25 2010, 01:28 AM

I don't use grass Pokemon mostly because there weakness are to easily exploited and only have a few cool type combinations. I've only ever chosen 1 grass starter and that was Treecko. Fire and water types always appealed to me more.

Posted by: Unholy Shadow Jan 25 2010, 02:19 AM

I don't really care for them. The only ones I actually like are Bulbasaur and his line of evos.

Posted by: FancyGranola Jan 25 2010, 02:56 AM

Honestly speaking, I am not much of a grass type fan mainly because they don't have many good sprites... Torterra looks extremely bulky, and I never really got the idea of Carnevine... But disregarding everything else, my favorite grass type has to be Jumpluff. It is so useful, you have no idea how good it is until you really know how to annoy. And yes I have beaten an Infernape with a Jumpluff.

I LOVE grass pokemon! There are the second place of my fav types!!!!
My favorite of them is Roserade and his evolutions! proudbow.gif

Posted by: Y U N I E Mar 13 2010, 04:08 PM

I wouldn't say I hate them, I just dislike having to rely on them due to most grass types having horrible speed. Fortunately, certain Pokes are exception to this, but even so. I'll take my speedy fire types over them anyday~
Plus, as Zaloog said, their weaknesses are easily exploited, and their defenses can't always stand up to it.
Appearance-wise, though, there are some really cute ones. I have a Shaymin stylus for my DS. cat.gif

Posted by: Synchronise Mar 13 2010, 04:27 PM

Hmm, well...Grass-types do have a lot of weaknesses to exploit, it is true. But I find some of them to be aesthetically pleasing, and somewhat useful in battle. (Treecko for the WIN.) Not to mention they score a surprise super-effective on that bane of all human existence: THE WATER TYPE. (I kid. Water is cool too.)

As for my favorites, well...

Hate Grass-types? Me? How could I hate my ninja Leafeon?

Actually, my only problem with Grass-types is the lack of variety in terms of color palettes. They're all shades of green with shades of gold for shinies. I get the summer-autumn theme, but pretty much every single Grass Pokemon is like that. A little more creativity on Game Freak's part would be appreciated by this fox.

Posted by: Hodou Masaka Mar 13 2010, 09:06 PM

I don't hate all grass types, but I just have a dislike for the type in general. Not that the Pokemon in it are lame (though a lot of them are.) My problem is that it's just so boring. So much weaker sounding then the other types.

It's been that way ever since the first gen games, for me.

Professor Oak: "This is Charmander, a fire-type!
(Charmander breathes fire)
Me: Ooooohhh!
Oak: "This is Squirtle, a water type!"
(Squirtle squirts water at Charmander, Charmander breathes fire back)
Me: Oooooohhh!
Oak: "And here's Bulbasaur, the grass-type."
(Bulbasaur has vines and leaves and other things that aren't nearly as cool as fire and water.)
Me: ...Yeah, I'mma go with the Charmander?
Oak: Yeah, that's what most people do...

To be honest, I used Bulbasaur on a later replay and it was pretty cool. Ivysaur's awesome in Brawl. I also like Roserade and Torterra, and when I was a kid I always wanted to catch a Sunkern. But all in all, you look at the other types and they all feel more powerful, more awesome. It's like... Flamethrowers! Thunderbolts! Mental destruction! Tidal waves! Blizzards, boulders, even the normal-type has body slams and hyper beams! And the grass type gets... really sharp leaves. The only cool sounding move they got back then has to charge up first. And then most Grass-types are overly cheery, often covered in boring flower motifs and such...

Even though I like using them, I certainly understand what people are saying when they mention that they have too many weaknesses and move pools that aren't very good. I was super upset at Sceptile's move pool in R/S/E. At least they let it learn Energy Ball in the recent generations.

Fire actually was intended to be the hardest. Look at how many caves, oceans, hikers, and swimmers are out there! I think that's why the last two generations gave the starter the fighting type, so that it could at least be strong against all of those hikers.

I always do extremely well with Torterra, Venusaur, and Leafeon because they have good defensive stats and (in my hands, at least) rarely get killed. I can survive Fire and Flying with them, and it takes an Ice type to actually put them down.

I think the cool thing about Grass types is that you can beat someone with an improbable weapon. I love the "More-than-meets-the-eye" aspect of it. Actually, when I first saw the move Frenzy Plant, I thought it was displaying rapidly growing vines that surround the foe, choke it, and pierce it's skin. My first thought was "That's...dark...but awesome!" I always envisioned Grass types to be like deadly jungle plants, not cute, domestic house plants(even though a fair number are modeled as such).

I also agree with FourTaledKitsune. They do need to diversify them some more.

Also true: I, too, had no idea so many people hated them. o.O

Posted by: Samoo Apr 28 2010, 08:58 AM

Grass types are alright.... many lack in Speed. Yet if they have alot of speed they aren't very good in attacking. I usually use them as an annoyer. E.g Sleeping, Leech Seeding etc happy.gif

Posted by: ARCEUS May 6 2010, 04:40 AM

They're too slow and weak dry.gif the only exceptions (In my opinion) are grovile, shaymin and celebi.

Posted by: Lazy Trainer May 6 2010, 09:15 AM

Competetive play lead to a hate of grass types just because most are pretty unusable.
Stats are only ok at best. Movepools predictable with nothing super amazing.

However, I love most of the designs and that's what matters most to me.
I love my Roserade. Haters gonna hate.

I agree, lots of their stats stink, but some Grass types will definantly destroy a super powerful Pokemon.
...
or maybe not...

but anyway, Grass types rock my socks!!!

my favs... leafeon.gif roselia.gif roserade.gif sceptile.gif and tons more that I can't seem to remember... XD

Posted by: WYZURD Jun 1 2010, 04:24 PM

I think people hate them because they are weak against so many things.

Ice, fire, flying, psychic, poison, bug, dragon, and steel types all can destroy grass types.

Personally, I don't hate grass types. But I don't find them strong or such either. The only grass type that is okay with being in my party is Torterra. Even though it had a 4x weakness to ice, I find it very powerful.

I dislike grass type pokémon because they are, in my opinion, the weakest type. They have way too many weaknesses for one thing: Flying, Poison, Bug, Fire, and Ice. Then you notice that Grass-Type moves aren't supereffective against very many types. Plus most Grass-Type moves are lousy and most grass-type pokémon are too cutesy for my liking.

Too many weaknesses, can't seem to learn very wide movesets (different types and all). Looks-wise many of them are pretty good, but eh when it comes to battling.

Posted by: Dango Sep 8 2010, 08:38 PM

Grass types are also really good at special attack and they have all these "drain" moves to steal HP! grin.gif

Posted by: DittoHunter Sep 9 2010, 08:06 PM

they're cool, I've got to admit - chikorita's the only grass starter that didn't come in first in my ranks for its region starters (I liked cyndaquil better).
however, despite their strength on three common types: water, ground and rock, they have a BOATLOAD of weaknesses. fire, flying, ice, poison. even really wimpy bugs like butterfree or kriketune could take out a tangrowth with ease. AND add to the fact that many dual typed grass pokemon could have a 4X weakness. celebi+shiftry to bug, parasect and abomasnow to fire, to name a few.

you say that the grass type is the hardest one, but actually, i find it quite easy.
I almost always pick grass, and, not being a great gamer, find no trouble in completing the game

Posted by: LexDoom Sep 11 2010, 08:17 PM

I like them there not my total fave type but i like them
Cause they are easy to Train....... well not in Gen2 But i usually pick the starter thats not the best in the first 2 gyms
Gen1: Charmander
gen2: Totodile or Cynda depends......
gen3: Toirchic(sp?) or Treeco (Sp?) this Gen yeah i some times chose the Grass type some times
gen4: I pick all of them but when i first got it witch was Diamond I picked Turtwig cause it was cute cat.gif but i never evolved it
Gen5:...... Well depends on the final evo. I might choose SmugLeaf but im still not sure or i Might Pick Otto

So yeah it depends on Gen. and gyms for me........
But i like some of them when i saw Frenzy Plant and Leaf storm i feel in love and wanted all my grass types to learn it but sadly..... they dont.... But i kinda like the 1st stage for some of Gen

Gen1:Bulba so cute cat.gif
Gen2:Bayleaf yes i feel like ash
gen3:either Treeco or Grov depends how i feel
Gen4:turtwig its speed is the key
gen5:Depends but i might keep it at Basic Stage

at first i thought regigagas was Grass because of the bushes on the top and his feet (i think)

but they are not that useless like Bug types....... curse you caterpie.gif But before gen 4 i think..........
I always thought cause i was just a little Boy I thought every Green Pokemon was a grass type cause grass is green and yeah...... but the one i was fooled was Sodowoodo (sp?)

Posted by: The Aztec God Of Spoons Oct 1 2010, 06:08 AM

I love the Bulbasaur family, Leafeon, Shamin and Skymin, Bayleaf. and a few others. I tend to choose the water starter, though. But in Sinnoh, they all sucked so I chose Turtwig. Gen 5- Smugleaf for sure!!!

If anybody is out there listening to me, can you tell me why lots of people hate grass types? :(And if you hate grass types mabe you should rethink thier advantages.

When you think defense, Grass types are risky to use most of the time. Fire and Ice moves are commonly used by special attackers. It is also weak against Flying and Bug moves.

Most of their resistances don't have much use. For example, most Water-types are able to use an Ice attack, which can be used against a Grass type. They are resistant to Ground but many of them are half Poison-type, which would neutralize their resistance. Almost every Electric-type can learn Signal Beam, which is a Bug move.

It is typical for Grass-types to learn "disabling moves" like Leech Seed. This enables Grass types to provide support to the rest of their team, and might make them difficult to faint. Now that I think about it, they're immune to Leech Seed (I know it can be affected by Leech Seed if the previous Pokémon was seeded and has Baton Passed into a Grass-type Pokémon).

They also have problems if you think offensively. Too many types resist these moves, and most of them aren't very powerful. Even then, most of the powerful moves have drawbacks. Leaf Storm sharply lowers Special Attack, and Wood Hammer causes recoil damage.

The majority of Grass-types have very narrow movesets, often where the only damage-dealing level up moves are Grass and Normal moves (Thinking of Cherrim, Meganium, and Sunflora).

Double resistances to Grass are extremely common, even more so than double weaknesses.

Grass Pokémon seem to be affected by weather conditions more than most other Pokémon. Ludicolo in rain, Cacturne in sandstorms, or Abomasnow in hail are examples of this.

When I think Grass moves, I think Smart contest.

Tangela is the only pure grass type and I think Tangrowth is too. Correct me if I'm wrong about this.

The Grass type has been paired with every type that it is super effective against.

All Pokémon that have 7 weaknesses are Grass type.

Is that enough? Personally, I don't necessarily enjoy grass types, but I don't hate them.

I'm guessing you weren't counting grass starters on the pure grass type point
Anyway, I agree with all you've said, they all are true.
However, I think it is a preferred thing.
Not many people like grass types because they feel they aren't very strong, but they are sort of supposed to be a support type
Just like I dislike dragons because of their pure power

Dazmi said my general opinion - Major weaknesses, narrow movesets, little resistance.

I don't train Grass Types very often, and when I do, it's due to the fact I focus on their other types (Breloom for Fighting, Ludicolo for Water) or if they are fast enough to spread status like Leech Seed like for example: Sceptile, Jumpluff, Erufuun (Due to it's ability), Tropius (Trick Room)

It's not like I don't like Grass types, it's that I like other types more than Grass types and I can pretty much defeat the pokemon that Grass types beat with my own pokemon, as well as defeat Grass types rather easily when I wasn't even planning on fighting them.

Water is always my first pick when i start a new game so it's almost natural to moan when I have to battle a strong grass pokemon

Posted by: FancyGranola Oct 24 2010, 01:32 AM

Water types and Grass types are amazing.
Ludicolo is one of my favorites. Well, all Water types are my favorites.

I just love the flexibility I get from using a Grass type. Sub seed is a nasty strategy to use on anyone. Stun Spore is hilariously pathetic to be honest... I really do enjoy using Thunder Wave over Stun Spore. But Spore is the Grass type's saving grace. That move will destroy teams.

I use so many Water types on my team, I always have a Jumpluff or another speedy Grass type on my team.

i like grass types because they have decent stats and are ethier cute or beautiful

Posted by: Painted Fox Jan 19 2011, 08:21 PM

In FireRed/LeafGreen it was actually easier to beat the game if you choose Bulbasaur, and in Emerald beating the Elite 4 is WAY easier if you choose Sceptile and use it against them, like with Blaziken in Sapphire/Ruby.

Treecko has and will always be my fave Starter of all Gens!

And no matter how much I have disliked 'Smugleaf', Jalorda is the most Epic final Evo ever!

Posted by: Black Rock Shooter Jan 21 2011, 08:45 PM

Grass-types are awesome.

Venusaur, Torterra, Smugleaf and Jalorda are the best Grass-types there is (imo).

Never liked Grass types from the start. To me they are useless, and they still are.

Posted by: Proby Jan 29 2011, 07:00 AM

I detest Grass types. I'm not a player who enjoys all the set-up that Grass types have, I hate using Status, I generally only use attack. This means that Grass types are pretty useless to me. I find them annoying to use.
The only Gen I used a Grass type was the 3rd, when Treecko arrived. His physical stats meant I liked him (although not nearly as much as Torchic and Mudkip). I actually used Treecko in my Platinum playthrough (Level 1 traded straight from Diamond as soon as I could) and he was a powerful member of my team. But aside from him and a few exceptions (Tropius, Roserade [I have no idea why I used her...]) Grass Pokemon never make it on my team.

I also hate them because of their ridiculously high amount of weaknesses. Pure Grass types have 5 weaknesses, a number which is only equalled by Rock. Rock has got some saving graces, because they generally have high difference, look pretty good and have a good moveset. They are the only type to be weak to another useless type in my opinion- Poison (It gives a rubbish little status... and isn't good for much else) so that makes them totally useless...

Tbh, I like grass types, but only with specific moves. I hate how most of their moves are super weak or are status moves.
Pokemon that double as grass and poison are great for battling though.

shaymin.gif bulbasaur.gif leafeon.gif < FTW. I like Snivy too. Why are you people hating on grass types?

Too many weaknesses, can't seem to learn very wide movesets (different types and all). Looks-wise many of them are pretty good, but eh when it comes to battling.

weaknesses =/= a bad defensive type

competitively speaking, grass types hold three key resistances: water, electric, and ground. they're weak to flying, poison, bug, fire, and ice. flying is a very uncommon attacking type, poison is almost a non issue, the only really common bug type move is u-turn, and the other two are worth it because resistances to thre of the most common attacking types make up for it

i'm sorry, but, anyone who says grass is a bad defensive type just because it has weaknesses is just being dumb

Posted by: Verinia May 17 2011, 09:41 AM

The only Grass-types I like are Ludicolo, Breloom and Virizion. And I think Snover and Bulbasaur are both adooooooorable. But Grass-types have a plethora of weaknesses, so that pretty much ruins any chance I'll be running one when I challenge Red.

Posted by: SaphireShadows May 19 2011, 03:57 PM

I love Grass types because of their status-inflicting moves and long-range attacks. Take Cottonee/Whimsicott, for example. I usually have it learn Leech Seed, Poison Powder, Energy Ball/Hurricane, and Cotton Guard. That way, I can raise its defense three stages, suck HP from the opponent, and weaken the opponent with Poison all in one turn grin.gif I like having all the technical moves that grass types possess. It makes battling a lot more fun.

I don't hate Grass types, I just thought that most of them have a really bad stats (and have a lot of weaknesses). I used Snivy on White and just... ugh. :/
The only Grass type I used was Breloom... I think. xD

i love grass types e-e;
in silver/gold/crystal/HG/SS i mostly like chose chikarita happy.gif
totodile is a suckish pokemon all rite :I But i do like most grass types, but some might be suckish, like oddish?
but do think, every type has VERY SUCKY POKEMON!, Ex: unown(1 move?) or magikarp (no moves? water type?) or even snorunt.(just a bad pokemon/ice type.) bucktooth.gif My opinion has been stated?

Posted by: Shinzu May 25 2011, 08:27 PM

I love Shaymin to death, as well as Treecko, Roserade, Cacnea, and Cacturne. What really gets me to hate Grass Types is the fact that...well...they've been my mortal enemy since the start of my Pokemon journey, save for FireRed and Emerald.

Totodile- owned by Chikorita
Piplup- destroyed by Turtwig
Oshawott- gets its butt kicked by Snivy ALL. THE. TIME.

Me and Grass types are like...Romeo and Juliet's families. P: We just don't get along.

And, I had a really bad experience with Sceptile. A year after I got to the EF, I failed miserably. I ditched the game and when I came back, Sceptiled failed again! I was broke, none of my Pokemon were good enough, and I decided to restart with Torchic (I despise Mudkip). Best choice ever. Besides Bulbasaur and Treecko, all the Grass Types are ugly and pointless, especially Snivy. That thing just needs to rot in a hole.

Grass types pokemon are cute . i love them so much

I don`t hate grass, but they arn`t my favorite

Posted by: mptiger Dec 18 2011, 10:07 PM

I don't hate grass types, I just don't usually use them. Most of my starters have either been water or fire types except for in Black where I got a Snivy. I do have a Roserade in Platinum, but it has little use other than to help catch Pokemon or to get rid of a Water/Ground type. And to be honest, Serperior isn't super spectacular either, so I usually end up having to over train him so that he remains useful.
Grass types don't have as versatile a move set in most cases compared to say a Water or Fire type. They're really not very useful in game, save for a gym or two. And they're just a pain to raise in general because you have to put so much more time and effort into it just so that they remain useful. Too much work, not that great of a reward. :/

grass types hold a special place in my heart mainly because my first ever pokemon was treecko.

Posted by: Quomimi Aug 21 2012, 07:11 AM

I don't like specific types, other than flying types. But I like only Pokemon from the types... cat.gif

Posted by: DaemonicFae Aug 23 2012, 06:42 PM

I don't dislike them, I just tend to prefer other types over them. I always have a water type and an electric type which basically covers their strengths. They're usually good for inflicting status conditions, but I don't usually need that.

Even if I plan to have one, I usually end up replacing it with something more useful and easier to raise. They mostly learn grass or poison type moves that don't cover a lot of extra bases. I like Pokemon that can learn at least one good move from at least four types, and grass types just don't fit that.

Their designs are so awesome though. noes.gif

Actually, Grass-types were the EASY mode since RBY. Water-types were the MEDIUM, Fire-types were the HARD.

Actually on yellow, where you can acquire the 3 normal starters I had the most trouble leveling up my bulbasaur and the least with charmander.
