Well, this is my first EV trained team. It's mainly OU with a splash of UU. This is my first one, and it's quite sided upon one stat, but still, that's why it's here. Oh yeah, it's also on SoulSilver.
Tomato @ Leftovers Ability: Pressure Nature: Rash (110% Special Attack, 90% Special Defense) EVs: 248 HP/136 Def/88 SpA/36 Spe - [Agility] - [Substitute] - [Baton Pass] - [Thunderbolt] I have Tomato lead as an assistance to my others. Starting off with Substitiute, he uses Agility for the Speed and trade off for one my slower sweepers with Baton Pass. If he's to weak for a SubPass, which Leftovers should at least allow me probably 5 SubPasses, then the EVs in Speed and Special Attack should allow for a solid hit on others with Thunderbolt. Kinda expected, especially when you see my others, but hell, if it works, it works. (Side note: Tomato's nickname came across while randomly watching Good Eats on tomatoes.) Porygon-Z @ Life Orb Ability: Adaptability Nature: Bashful EVs: 4 Def/ 252 Spa/ 252 Spe - [Nasty Plot] - [Tri Attack] - [Dark Pulse] - [Hidden Power (Fighting)] Z is one of the few Pokemon that I'll trade off for with Tomato's SubPass. The already large Speed EV investment gives him a decent Speed stat, even with the Base 90, but with the added Agiliity from Tomato allows him to Speed by, allowing his setup to begin. Nasty Plot starts it off, then pound the foe with the three Special moves he holds. This allows a good 2HKO on everything's that not Blissey, and with Adaptability, Tri Attack packs one helluva punch. (Side note: Porygon-Z isn't nicknamed because he was obtained over Wi-fi.) PoisonBone @ Life Orb Ability: Sniper Nature: Sassy (110% Special Defense, 90% Speed) EVs: 252 Atk/240 SpA/ 16 Spe - [Rain Dance] - [Waterfall] - [Hydro Pump] - [Draco Meteor] Bone is my Mixed Attacker. She's also another one I change in for SubPass. She holds a low Speed stat, mainly due to her Nature and Ability, but the SubPass changes that and allows for a comepletely different setup. When changed in, she starts with Rain Dance, then, according to the foe Defenses, she'll use Waterfall or Hydro Pump respectively. For anything that's resistant to Water, she'll drop down a Draco Meteor on them. With her high Special Attack, it's gonna hurt. A lot. She's one of my only two Physical Attackers. (Side note: PoisonBone's name came from Seadra's SS Pokedex description.) Vigil @ Leftovers Ability: Intimidate Nature: Impish (110% Defense, 90% Special Attack) EVs: 212 HP/24 Atk/252 Def/20 SpD - [Dragon Claw] - [Earthquake] - [Toxic] - [Roost] Vigil is my Defensive player. Yeah, yeah, it's said to be a waste for a Mence to be Defensive instead of Offensive, but if I did make her Offensive, what would happen if I hit a good sweeper? Toxic is used to weaken her enemies while she hacks away at their health with Dragon Claw or Earthquake, based on the foe. Roost comes in effect when she's low on health and Leftovers definately helps with a good amount of HP on the Wall. She can last a long time. (Side note: In latin, Vigil's name means guardian. She was originally going to be male, but due to laziness, he became she.) Chalybs @ Leftovers Ability: Sturdy Nature: Careful (110% Special Defense, 90% Special Attack) EVs: 4 Atk/252 HP/252 SpD - [Stealth Rock] - [Earthquake] - [Explosion] - [Gyro Ball] Chalybs is my Physical Sweeper as well as my Defensive Wall. He's based off my old Steelix, Rocky, only with his increased Special Defense he can take more super-effective hits than Rocky ever could. As well as with his large HP stat and Leftovers, it's kind of like another Vigil, only more Sweeping and less healing. Being the final one of the SubPass combo, he'll set up Stealth Rock if brought in early, if not, then he'll just sweep away. (Side note: in Latin, Chalybs name means steel.) Moribund @ Life Orb Ability: Levitate Nature: Timid (110% Speed, 90% Attack) EVs: 4 HP/252 SpA/252 Spe - [Hypnosis] - [Shadow Ball] - [Thunderbolt] - [Focus Blast] Just like Cadaver, her kid holds an extreme sweeping power. Unlike her, although, his Special Attack isn't hindered by a bad Nature, such as Impish, and I now hold EV knowledge. Moribund's Special Attack his huge compared to his mother's Special Attack. He holds the same moveset as his mother, as well as the same strategy. For the harder foes, start off his Hypnosis. His Base 110 Speed stat, plus the 252 EVs, allows for an almost sure-fire first hit move. This includes Latios/as, which means even they aren't safe. His moveset allows for a quick sweep of everything sleeping but not anything named Blissey. (Side note: Moribund took the longest to get the moveset for due to complications with the Battle Fronteir.) Clauses: Species Clause OHKO Clause Evasion Clause Soul Dew Clause Uber Clause And no, dispite what Smogon says, I don't think of Salamence as an Uber. |

That's understandable. Blissey and Mence can be a bit formidable. I may not have much experience in the competetive world, but I at least know a few of the major competitors.

Use a quiet nature for steelix, since it will boost the power of gyro ball iirc, lower speed makes it faster. Steelix isn't really a physical sweeper. Its EVs even say it, especially its base stats. I think you should just use it as a wall. Since the zapdos, is going to be passing on agility, right? You wouldn't need Timid, I think you should go for a Modest nature, because of the fact that it'll give you more power. Plus the agility will give you great speed, with which you get a speed of 632, which beats quite a lot of pokemon. Even choice scarf azelf, which goes at 493 speed. Thats without a +speed nature which is quite good. I suppose if you want to give your opponent a surprise, then go for explosion, instead of hypnosis. Also hypnosis, has 60% chance, of hitting. Gengar, isn't made to survive hits. HP Ice would be much better to use instead, or explosion again for a surprise, especially against blissey, which it will damage quite a bit Modest, is better for Porygon-Z,since again you are baton passing agility. However, you do need a backup plan, just in case your Zapdos, gets destoryed. Its always good to have one, so in that case, I'd put Timid on the Porygon-Z. It gives you a nice backup plan. I think Hasty is better for Kingdra, it will outspeed, other kingdras with a rain dance set and give others a nice surprise. I think Thunder would be better on Zapdos, that is if you are gonna use it with the rain dance on the kingdra since it will 100% of the time, and add a great deal of power to your zapdos, but yeah depends on your preference This post has been edited by TyraniBoah: Aug 3 2010, 07:20 AM -------------------- |

Alrighty then, I could try a bit of that, the explosion thing mainly. I should be able to find myself another Seadra and Dragon Scale for the Hasty Kingdra, but I never found out how to get a different natured, 1 time only Pokemon other than hacking.

Before I actually delve into it, I'd like to note that Salamence was very recently voted to the Uber tier, so if you plan on using her, you will have to remove your Ubers clause. It also means you can avoid Latias, as she was also recently voted off to Ubers. However, if you still want to run a defensive Dragon in that slot, you could always run with a Dragonite:
Dragonite @ Leftovers Ability: Inner Focus Nature: Impish EVs: 220 HP/36 Atk/252 Def - [Earthquake] - [Dragon Claw] - [Toxic] - [Roost] The EV spread I posted needs work (a lot of it, since I don't have the resources on me to check stats) but this Dragonite could work about the same, minus the nice Attack drop thanks to Intimidate. That said, Dragonite is naturally bulkier than Salamence, and with Mence gone from OU, Dragonite can move about more freely. Now then! The rest of the team! Zapdos Looks fine. Running TBolt over Thunder is definitely preferred, as Zapdos is not quite bulky enough to fling around once Rain Dance is out, and TBolt with Zapdos's SpAtk is going to be beastly enough. Thunder is tempting, but its normally low accuracy isn't worth the gamble considering what Zapdos is designed to do. I like. Porygon-Z Since you were obviously going for HP Fighting, I can't say much about its neutral Nature. Nasty Plot will cover for it, in any case. Z is another Pokemon that won't stand up to a lot of hits, so you'll have to be sure Z can survive one (max two) hits from an opposing Pokemon after a Baton Pass. Kingdra Although the Defense boost that Sassy provides is nice, I would recommend running, in your case, Brave, as you don't seem to worry too much about Speed decreases thanks to Baton Passing Agility with Zapdos. The moveset is pretty standard besides; I run a Kingdra with that same moveset myself, and it works to great effect. Steelix Standard Steelix. Gengar I am...surprisingly okay with Hypnosis on this set, because you can more than cover for the types that HP Fire/Ice would take care of. But from personal experience, Hypnosis is unreliable (well, it has 60% accuracy, so there) so use it only when you won't be able to get off a OHKO with certainty. I should be able to find myself another Seadra and Dragon Scale for the Hasty Kingdra, but I never found out how to get a different natured, 1 time only Pokemon other than hacking. Each and every pokemon, in the wild, has a pre-determined nature. They change everytime you find one. Also have you heard of IVs at all? Also I think you should try all of the improvements suggested by users on Shoddy battle, to get a rough idea of what works in practise. I'd also like to add, that defensively, Dragonite is a lot better than Salamence, why? Because of its higher defences, it does have slightly lower HP. Overall, I find that dragonite survives a lot more of the time than salamence. I ran it with 252 attack and 252 speed with 4 hp. Instead of the above moveset, you could use a bulky DD set. Off the top of my mind, I'd say 252 HP, 144 attack and 96 in speed, then putting the remaining into defences. Then your zapdos could baton pass agility to it, which would let it sweep. Put on Dragon dance, Outrage, Fire Punch and EQ. Idk how it would work out though, since I have yet to find out calcs for it. Adamant nature with leftovers. DD would be great for adding extra power and speed, making dragonite wipeout a sizable amount of the opponent's team. EDIT: i forgot, quiet is +spatk -speed, use either brave or sassy. Brave will give your gyro ball a bit more power, whereas sassy will add spdef. This post has been edited by TyraniBoah: Aug 3 2010, 05:40 PM -------------------- |

I don't think there's a way to fit Roost onto a DD set without sacrificing a lot of coverage.
I would honestly keep the Toxic/Roost combo on Dragonite if possible. Stealth Rock and Toxic on one team has its benefits. It's also possible to switch one of Steelix's moves with Toxic as well, but something would obviously have to go. Also, if you plan to keep Gyro Ball then Steelix should have a Sassy nature. Back to Dragonite - So Toxic and Roost are some moves to keep in mind. If you give Toxic to Steelix though, you can open up a whole new window of opportunities for Dragonite. It could become a bulky mixed sweeper, a bulky physical sweeper (which your team lacks), or it could even offer further status support with Thunder Wave. -------------------- |
