The main arena, a gargantuan Colosseum overlooking the vast sea, has separated into 8 fields, each with its own set of stands, while the higher seats have a lovely view of all eight battles. Each battle is televised on the giant screens located along the walls, giving spectators the nitty gritty close-up views of each battle.

The battles to come would be fierce, and with so many raging simultaneously, and to be distracted by the neighboring fights could easily spell a loss.

The Match for this field was slated for Francesco Rojas and Lori Pardare. The field itself appeared to be a sandy desert, with rolling dunes and a few jutting buttes for more stable footing. Occasionally, as if by some marvel, little dust devils would whip up and die down, more than likely designed for temporarily disabling vision to an unlucky battler.

The referee, holding the trademark flags, floated nearby on what could only be described as a hovering disc; yet another technological marvel of Daioh Scientists. The ref tapped his fingers on his poketch, which revealed a rotating triangular pyramid on the main screen. Once it stopped rotating, it revealed a large number 2:

"This will be a three on three battle conducted in Doubles-Style, with One Pokemon in Reserve. If one of the combatants falls, the reserve must be sent in immediately. Trainers, summon your pokemon now!"

This battle seemed ready to erupt. The stakes? Continuing participation in the tournament.

The crowd roared in anticipation.

“Uh, whaaat?” Lori moved slowly, as though in a daze, to her side of the designated field. The arena in which she found herself was only one piece of a large 8-slice pie. The zone in which she stood was dry and sandy with a localised breeze that summoned swirls of dust into eye-scathing sand traps amid the sparse jutting boulders that protruded from the ground. Barriers separated her from the closest zones which looked completely different to hers. “Is this… normal?” She wondered out loud as she took up her spot where sand tickled the skin between her boots and pop-dress.

Across the arena a boy stood ready to face her. He was… very… handsome?... No… Pretty. This must be Francesco Rojas – her next opponent. She waved with an open smile on her face.

“Good luck, Fran… sess…ko?” Lori attempted the pronounciation awkwardly as she greeted him. She blushed with nervousness and gripped a large swathe of red hair in both fists for self-support. The referee interrupted her quickly:

"This will be a three on three battle conducted in Doubles-Style, with One Pokemon in Reserve. If one of the combatants falls, the reserve must be sent in immediately. Trainers, summon your pokemon now!"

No time for consideration – they were under pressure to get started right away!

“Time to go!”
“GO!”
“I choose you!”
“The stage is yours!”

Calls came from the other arenas, making Lori look around her expectantly. So much was going on! Pokemon filled the spaces at the edges of her vision and the urge to simply stand and watch how the other trainers were beginning their matches was almost overwhelming. She wrenched her attention back to her own field and selected two Pokeballs.

“Pipster and Triss, go!” Lori tossed the balls out into the sand where they burst open to reveal her Piplup and Snivy. “Time for our second chance, guys! Give it your best shot!” She allowed an errant glance at the other neighbouring pieces of the arena and saw both Trainers and Pokemon in the thick of battle.

*This is SO cool!!!*

Francesco Rojas had given Branwys a consolation hug after they had both lost. He had promises of the speedo-modeling whispered in her ears before the announcers declared the second round of battle.

Second round, second chance. Cesc's self-declared specialty was in turning the tides. Whether or not this was true remained to be seen, but brimming with his usual self-confidence, Cesc and Branwys dashed off to the Pokemon Centers.

As he stepped onto the field, surveying the rolling desert dunes. This was the battlefield, and he had no pokemon that could ably navigate it. The logical choice, for now, was to rest the two Pokemon who had fought earlier. Both Oberon and Valentine were agile Pokemon, which would be to their disadvantage on the playing field unless Cesc could find a way to utilize the jutting platform like structures. He would leave his Chimchar in reserve then.

Lori Pardare, his opponent, entered the field. His eyes immediately drifted to her bright red hair, noting how much he enjoyed such a flagrant display of red-ness.

"Please, call me Cesc!" He grinned cheerfully as he waved back at her across the field. "Good luck to you too, Miss Pardare!" With a sweeping bow, he reared back up, tossing the two pokeballs forward in one graceful motion.

As the pokeballs struck the desert, bursts of stars shot forth from the capsules, releasing a fireworks-like display of lights. The stars in turn swept up in an errant dust devil, spinning lazily around before being shot back upwards and dissipating.

"Bardolph! Tybalt!"

"Pipster and Triss, go!"

Cesc blinked at the disparity between the two sets of Pokemon. The Piplup and Snivy were just so...adorable...in comparsion to Cesc's intimidating Scyther and Zangoose. Always looking to please the crowd, both of his pokemon wore accessories, as per usual. The Scyther wore a blue vest, and a red and gold bandana, easily matching Cesc's outfit. Tybalt, on the other hand, appeared to be wearing a black tie, and had earrings in to match his trainer's.

Bardolph, overstimulated, craned his neck this way and that, to get a view of the other battles, perhaps in search of a more worthy opponent. A clawed paw rested gently on his shoulder as his Zangoose partner gently jerked his feline head towards the opposing pokemon. Glaring coolly back at the Zangoose, the Scyther let out what could only be described as a disappointed sigh. With a nod, the two Pokemon took up an identical stance, mimicking that of a Mienfoo: One claw and blade were extended forward, the other swept back, their balances on their back feet.

Cesc took a moment to look around, spotting Branwys in an adjacent battlefield. Other familiar faces? Darryn Kellor had been in the bracket, as had the loudmouth Seiccan Serroc, who appeared to be yelling in his usual fashion. Cesc hoped the opponent, a tough looking punk, wasn't fooled by Seiccan's dunce-like attitude; the kid was a pretty serious competitor.

"FIGHT!"

Snapped from his analysis of the other competitors, Cesc, without looking, swept a hand out towards his Pokemon.

"Tijera X Dobles!"

Out of habit, Cesc had resorted to his masked play, which seemed rather silly, considering that he was in a tournament filled with professional trainers; the Hall Leader from Fidona, Carmen, had punished him for that lesson. After the realization hit him, he hoped that Lori wasn't fluent in Spanish...and he hoped she wouldn't take offense to his slip up.

Faithfully, though, both of his Pokemon launched forward towards their opponents. Bardolph's wings buzzed, kicking up sand as he rose into the air before lancing towards Triss, his blades glowing with a fierce green energy. Likewise, Tybalt shot across the field from platform to platform, upon reaching the one closest to Pipster, he sprang up into the air, both sets of his claws glowing with the same energy as his partner. Masked play or not, Cesc was starting this one out fully on the offensive; his strategy was to apply pressure until one side cracked.

“Wha!” Lori cried, taken aback by the ruthless speed of her opponent’s Pokemon as they assaulted her own. Her hesitation was costly as the Scyther and Zangoose dove upon her Pokemon like bloody thirsty whirlwinds of blades while she lost the opportunity to counter attack.

“Luuup!”
“Sniii!”

Lori’s duo were struck hard, the x-shaped slash of the offsensive attacks burning their vision as each move met their target. The smaller Pokemon tumbled awkwardly along the sandy ground, fighting to find purchase that would allow them to rise and fight again. Lori gulped hard.

*C’mon, Lori!* She urged herself to focus while gripping her hair furiously. *Counter attack!*

“OK, guys!” The young trainer’s voice wavered slightly but the determination in her teammates should as they pushed themselves to their knees. “Counter attack! Use Water Pledge and Grass Pledge!”

Both of Lori’s Pokemon remained on one knee and bowed their heads toward the ground, as though praying, while an aura of blue and green swirled about them. In a flash, geysers of water and thorns erupted from the ground in pursuit of their targets, flooding the sandy field with mystical energy.

*Yes! It worked!* Lori’s knuckles whitened around her locks. *Time for a field change!*

"Incredible!" Cesc gasped as Lori's counterattack ripped through the entire field. The vines and geysers exploding forth battered his Pokemon clear back to Cesc's side of the field.

But even more amazing was the fact that the entire desert field had now changed to a marsh, leaving Tybalt and Bardolph ankle deep in a viscous pool of mud.

"Miss Pardare, I've never seen such a combination." he took a moment to flash her a smile and a wink. "Such a dazzling display from a dazzling woman. I'm officially your fan."

His muddy Zangoose and Scyther took a moment to look over their shoulders at their human commander. An exasperated look fell over the Zangoose's features, while the Scyther bore a murderous one. How incredulous! The trainer had taken time out of the battle to flirt.

"Ah, sorry my friends." Cesc smiled sheepishly to his battling partners, "Forgive me. Shall we turn the tides back in our favour?"

Straightening back up, he placed one hand akimbo, thrusting the other out in an almost overly exaggerated fashion.

"Tybalt, Garra Metal! Bardolph, Viento Plata!. Combination: Silver Sword!"

His pokemon launched forward, but Cesc noted, with a hint of dismay, that they were moving markedly slower through the marshy field. Lori's attack had not only damaged his battlers, but slowed them down.

As he ran forward, cutting through the muck, Tybalt held out both of his claws, which now appeared to be shining with a metallic hue. Behind him, Bardolph whipped his wings into a frenzy, sending out a cloud of spores behind him, forming into a pair of slicing blades. Catching them in his gauntlet-like claws, Tybalt raced forward, aiming for the spot between Pipster and Triss, aiming to slash both of Lori's Pokemon with his new combination attack.

“Wait, what?” Lori blushed deeply and tried to rip her gaze away from the pretty hot guy on the other side of the field. He called her dazzling… Dazzling! And a woman! Not a girl! And he was a… a… a FAN!? Heat burned in Lori’s cheeks with an intensity equal to a thousand suns as he stole her attention and held her with his paralysing and sickeningly addictive eyecontact.

Who was this guy!?

“Silver Sword!”

“Hmm, wha-?” Lori was wrenched back into the reality of her battle harshly. What had he said? Garra? Plata? What was that?! What was a Silver Sword?! How do you counter it?!

“Sni!” Triss dove expertly to the side in time to avoid the slashing blades of the Zangoose but Pipster had no chance in avoiding it, despite the battlefield giving him a speed adavantage. Maybe if Lori had responded sooner then they could have both dodged but quite simply their Trainer was not prepared for this.

Silver motes decorated Triss as she made her escape, stining her scales and making her cry with pain while Pipster was hit hard with a powerful combination that not only packed an impressive punch but also looked so COOL.

“Pipster, Triss!” Lori cried, watching them struggle to regain their footing amid the marsh. “I think we should…”

“SNI! SNIVY!” Triss yelled over her Trainer at the Piplup on her team. Pipster nodded, a blue aura enveloping him as he rose on shakey legs.

“Pipster, is that Torrent? Already?” Lori’s eyes were wide with amazement. Such powerful attacks had brought her teammate that far down already? This Cesc guy was something else!

“SNI!” Triss yelled at Pipster and together they attacked.

With a mighty leap, Triss dove for the Scyther and threw out her vines while her own body extended. Like an widening lasso, the Snivy’s body flew through the air in an offensive Wrap attack. As she preoccupied her own target, Pipster drew back his head with a long moan before snapping it forward with beak open and torrential water pouring fourth in a powerful Hydro Pump right at the Zangoose.

“B-but!” Lori protested but her Pokemon had already made their decisions and her choice of attacks was disregarded in favour of their own. Lori absently took a step backwards, away from the fight, with a hand raised in shock to her mouth. It was happening again but this time not only Triss was fighting without orders but Pipster had chosen to ignore her, too. There was no way she could win like this…

Torrent?

If memory served him, then Torrent was the water-equivalent of Valentine's Blaze Ability, which meant that the little penguin was about to get a massive power boost.

As he prepared to issue a set of counters, he watched, agape, as Lori's Pokemon acted entirely of their own accord. That sort of move left Cesc's masked play in the dust, giving him nothing to prepare a proper counterattack. He had thought, for a moment, that his earnest praise had stunned his opponent into silence, but that evidently didn't stop her Pokemon from acting of their own accord.

Perhaps the Snivy had sensed the innate synnergy in Cesc's battle style: Both of his Pokemon always worked in tandem when he could help it, playing off of his partner's strength. The grass snake wrapped herself around the Scyther, pinning down his shoulders and disabling the full use of his blades. With his main offensive threat down, and no way for him to hit the creature with his wings via Wing Attack, Bardolph looked particularly annoyed at being disabled so easily.

Tybalt, on the other hand, fared far worse than his partner. Despite playing it off, he had taken some damage from the Silver Wind that he grabbed, and combined with the Water and Grass Pledges striking him simultaneously, he had weathered quite a lot of damage in the first rounds.

The Hydro Pump hit him as he was making his retreat, giving him little room to maneuver through the swamp. Blasting him clear past Cesc and out of the arena, the powerful blast of water had rendered the poor Zangoose unconscious upon impact. He lay there in a crumpled heap, dripping wet from the sheer volume of water that had been pumped against his body. The little Piplup had packed a surprising punch.

"Tybalt, come back. That was some beautiful work out there, my friend." The Zangoose disappeared back into his pokeball, leaving Cesc with only one Pokemon on the field.

"Ms. Pardare, I'm afraid you and your friends are putting me on the ropes; I'll have to really let loose if I want to win this, no?" Whipping out his third and final Pokeball, he tossed it into the field with a flourish. A spire of flame shot upwards, parting to reveal his final choice: Valentine, his Chimchar.

"Valentine, Fake out Piplup!"

Once again displaying the blinding speed of his Pokemon, Cesc had ordered what was possibly one of the fastest attacks any of his Pokemon could muster. It looked as if the Fire Monkey disappeared and reappeared in front of Piplup, clapping his hands with surprising ferocity. The attack usually flinched an opponent without fail, unless they had a special ability. However, with Piplup displaying Torrent, Cesc figured it to be a safe call.

"Bardolph, whip up a Razor Wind!"

While Triss was bodily locked to her target, the Scyther began whipping up a whirlwind around his body, forming circling blades of air around him as he buzzed his wings as fast as they could go.

Cesc knew full well that he couldn't quite hit Triss with it, at that close range, but hopefully it was enough to scare the Snivy into detaching and returning Bardolph's full range of already limited mobility.

“Snnnn.” Triss fought against the pull of the vortex created by Razor Wind and the struggling motion of the Scyther beneath her but there was no way to overcome that strength with her small frame. Inch by inch her coils began to unravel and before she knew it she was unwillingly loosening her grip on the bug Pokemon in her clutches.

“Pipster, help!” Triss shrieked, chancing a glance back at ther teammate. A burning Chimchar had left its Fake Out mark on the small Penguin, rendering the Water-type unable to move. Already weakened it was inevitable that the monkey was going to finish Pipster off with its next move unless Triss could somehow step in and create a distraction.

There was a grunt from below and Triss instantly found her lower half loose and flapping about wildly. The Scyther was breaking free!

“Ung!” Triss groaned as she fought to hold on, her only purchase reducing to her vines which were wrapped around the bug’s shoulders.

“Triss use Flash!” Lori’s voiced called over the ripping sound of wind in Triss’s ears. Triss rolled her eyes. The girl had made the wrong call again.

With a heave, Triss drew herself closer to the Scyther’s face and grabbed it with her hands just as her vines were torn free. Summoning her inner beast she narrowed her eyes into a piercing Glare rather than use the move that her Trainer had supplied. Without waiting to see if it took hold, Triss pushed away from the Scyther and sank low into the mist of the marsh, sithering rapidly away on her belly.

*Hang in there, Pipster!*

*****

“No…” Lori whispered to herself as Triss battled on without an acknowledgement of her commands. At the moment she had seen the Zangoose fall, Lori had received a surge of hope that she would be able to win the match but if her Pokemon didn’t even believe in her, why should she? How ironic that Cesc had considered that he would require to “let loose” in order to win while Lori’s grip on the battle was so “loose” that she barely knew what was going on anymore.

With Pipster down on his knees, awaiting his final spanking before recall and Triss hidden amid the swamp, Lori held her breath and resigned herself to see what would happen next.

Razor Wind had been successful in undoing the wrap, but the Snivy had been ordered to use Flash.

Expecting something...well...flashier, he was surprised to see the grass snake make eye contact with Bardolph. Immediately, his Scyther stood stock still, trembling for a moment as the incipient Razor Wind died down before it launched. Cesc cursed silently, as he'd now lost a turn to to paralysis. It seemed odd...Flash wasn't a technique that paralyzed opponents...was the Snivy acting of her own accord?

It dawned on Cesc that perhaps Lori wasn't giving non-verbal commands, as he'd suspected. Her pokemon had simply taken the battle into their own hands, shaking the girl's confidence.

Now, with the Grass Snake hiding in the muck, he needed to get rid of the Piplup, who was the main threat to his freshly summoned Chimchar.

"Valentine, Acrobatics!"

Foregoing the marsh all together, Valentine sprang into the air, aiming a fierce double-footed kick with all the force of the parabolic arc behind it, aimed at the already worn Piplup; he had to remove that potential threat immediatly; the Snivy he'd deal with as soon as he figured out her third pokemon. He'd have to try and make a quick comeback, forcing it down to a 2 on 1 if he had any chance of winning this. On top of that, the wily Snivy was too unpredictable, and thus needed to go.

“Pipster, no!” Lori screamed, her Piplup taking the powerful hit from Cesc’s Chimchar. With a strangled scream, her partner fell and did not rise.

“Piplup is unable to battle!” The call came from the referee as Lori hastily recalled her teammate.

“You fought well, Pipster.” She whispered to his Pokeball as he clipped it back onto her belt. Her fingertips brushed the tops of the green-capped balls as she tried to make a decision who to send out next. Her options may have been relatively limited but there simply was no easy way of picking between the two Pokemon she had left.

*Chico is fast and experienced – he’d be great for fighting an experienced Trainer. But then, Apache can fly and he’s super strong…*

“Miss Pardare?” The referee prompted her from the side of the field. She blinked like a Hoothoot.

“Huh?” Her gaze returned from somewhere in the near-distance and she bobbed her head apologetically. “Sorry! I was just thinking for a sec! But I’ve made my choice and now I’ll call out… Chico!”

“Miiinccino!” Chico announced as he emerged from the thrown ball amid the marsh. He looked around expectantly but could not spot his teammate. He shrugged nonchalantly and turned back to give Lori a thumbs-up.

“At least someone is ready to listen to me…” Lori muttered. “Chico, let’s-“

“SNI!” Triss burst from cover without warning, her collar unfurled and shinging blinding light at the Chimchar with her Flash attack.

Lori gasped with shock, not believing her eyes as her Pokemon went on the uninstructed offensive once more. The snake barked more orders out at the chinchilla on the field as she went and before Lori knew what was going on she had lost control of her final Pokemon.

“Cino!” Chico declared, also rushing the Chimchar. With his heritage singing strongly in his bones, the chinchilla swept his powerful tail towards the fiery foe with Aqua Tail.

The field had erupted into madness, and Cesc had no idea what to do. For a moment, he had locked into Lori's battling style, which was rare for Cesc. However, the one time he'd clued in to her rhythm, it appeared that her Snivy took over. Triss seemed to be issuing the commands, and both had targeted the fresh Chimchar.

The Flash lit up in Valentine's eyes, causing the Monkey to paw at them as he stumbled back. He couldn't see the little chinchilla Pokemon's powerful Aqua Tail coming. The Minccino's tail impacted him like a crashing wave, sending him tumbling into the mud.

"Valentine, Slack Off! Bardolph! X-Scissor on Snivy!"

Leaving the Scyther unguarded proved to be a problem. It made sense to target the major threat on the field, given that Bardolph was dealing with a paralysis from Triss. However, it didn't mean that he was out of the fight.

He moved much more slowly than before, between the paralysis and the muck, but it appeared that Bardolph still had strength a plenty in his terrifying blades. The scythes flashed out again, hoping to score another X-shaped slash on the flanked Grass snake.

While Bardolph took the offensive, Valentine plopped down into the mud, sitting serently for a moment to restore his energy. Cesc couldn't afford to be have only a paralysis-ridden Scyther in this match, so the moment of defense felt warranted. However, he eyed Lori carefully, not sure how to go about this. On the one hand, it appeared that she had a better chance of winning with her silence. On the other hand, he was supposed to be battling her, not just her Pokemon.

“Triss! Get out of there!” Lori cried, her alarm seeming the reach the grass snake at the last moment. Lori’s Snivy span quickly, the incoming Scyther filling her vision. With a powerful shot downwards with her vines, Triss threw herself clear from the ground and upwards in an attempt to dodge the bug Pokemon’s attack by jumping over him.

As though in slow motion, Triss’s movement traced an arc upwards that allowed her to get out of the path that bardolph had originally set for her. It did not, however, allow for the clearing of the marsh.

Power from the combination of Water and Grass Pledge evaporated from the sand in that same moment, tendrils of blue and green energy shimmering upwards like a heat mirage. Also in that moment, Cesc’s Scyther regained some of his speed.

“SCY!”

Crossed blades that were aiming low were suddenly aiming high and the vaulting Snivy was caught completely off guards. Blades bit deep into green scales and the Snivy was thrown high into the air with an agonising scream that resonated angrily in Lori’s ears. By the time Triss hit the ground, the screaming had stopped and her limp body barely flinched as she hit the sand hard.

“Snivy is unable to battle!”

“No!” Lori gasped, horrified that her Pokemon had fallen and she had only been able to give her a single direction in the whole time she had been on the field. “Triss, return now!”

*How can this happen!? This is not how it’s meant to be! I’m meant to be better than this! I’m meant to be like Kino! She’s strong and never gives up, always winning and smiling to the crowds. But I’m… I’m…*

“Lori, Lori, Lori!” A mini section of the crowd, maybe three kids a little younger than her cheered fervently in the stands. Their faces were lit up with excitement and urgency – a welcome boost to the flame-haired girl’s breaking morale.

*They’re cheering for me? But why? I’m losing…*

“Cino?” Chico called back from his spot on the field. His eyes were large and expectant, ears twitching to hear what his next orders were. Lori’s resolve bolstered a little.

*Losing but not out. Right, Chico?* Lori clenched her fists and took a deep breath. She had to keep battling until the end and if she lost then it only meant she would be stronger for her next battle – Kino had always said that. So it was up to her to never give up, not just for herself but also for her Pokemon and… her fans? Lori nodded to herself. It was time for the unexpected Trainer to take a lead out of the unexpected Ninja’s book!

“Chico!” Lori cried, holding out her hands in front of her. Her middle and fore-fingers made a cross that her Pokemon mimicked perfectly. “Kage bunshin no jutsu!”

Five puffs of smoke popped on the field in an instant, each one clearing to reveal a copy of the Minccino that had stood alone a moment before. The rodent was focused and energized, his stance ready and waiting for his Trainer to exact her battleplan. Lori felt her heart trying to escape her chest with her excitement.

“And now, get that Scyther! Use Iron Tail!”

A flash of satisfaction crossed Cesc's features as the bothersome Snivy finally went down. He now had Lori on the ropes, with only one pokemon remaining on the field. The Minccino was certainly a cute little thing, and had shown tremendous power in his attacks. He couldn't afford to let his guard down now.

He turned his gaze to the crowd, where a small group of spectators had began to chant Lori's name. A smile crossed his face as Lori's look of hopelessness turned into one of determination. This was the 'consolation bracket', but both competitors still had a chance to win the big one.

"Kage bunshin no jutsu!"

Lori had replied to Cesc's original masked play with masked play of her own. Though, a little voice in the back of Cesc's head thought the phrase would've been more complete with the term "Datteybayo" behind it...whathever that meant.

Chico had vanished, reapparing as five Chicos.

Double Team. Cesc noted, filing it away in his mental databank. Cesc's aptitude with languages gave him this tiny ability...hopefully one day it would come in handy.

"Bardolph, Doble Equipo!" Cesc prepared to counter with the same technique, utilizing a different name. However, Bardolph's paralysis took hold once more, forcing the Scyther to double over in pain.

"Valentine, intercept! "Lanzallamas""

Cesc's hesitation cost him; the Flamethrower ripped through one of Chico's shadow clones, leaving the real Minccino free to smack the beleaguered Scyther dead on with a devastating Iron Tail attack.

Bardolph disappeared in a red beam of light, but Cesc decided to continue to press the attack. He absolutely could not afford to let the momentum swing in his favour. He was back in the desert field now, a scorching hot area that perhaps Chimchar could take advantage of. The natural fire type would feel a bit more at home in the desert heat than a fluffy woodland creature.

"Valentine, Giro Fuego!""

The intensely mobile Chico, who appeared to rely on close physical combat with its tail, would hopefully be trapped in the flaming vortext for a quick spell. Cesc's agile mind raced with a way to finish off the battle.

Lori literally pumped the air with a fist when the Scyther went down, jubilant in her practical tie with Cesc. She’d had a rocky start with triss taking control of the match but Lori was proving to herself and her Pokemon that she was a more than capable Trainer if they only listened to her plans. That thought nearly left her head completely when a Fire Spin enveloped Chico and the small rodent’s cry split the air.

“Miiiin!” Chico screamed amid the flames, the spiral of fire surrounding him in a blazing trap.

*Oh no! Chico can barely move with that fire holding him back!* Lori cursed, watching in vain as the Chimchar kept itself at a safe distance. *And Chico’s Aqua Tail is useless if he can’t keep up with his target… What can we do!?*

“Cciiiiinooooo!” Chico wailed again, his cries becoming more strained amid the flames. The sound was horrible! How could Lori let the battle go on if he was making such…

“That’s it!” Lori let go of her hair completely to wave frantically to her teammate. “Chico, use Hyper Voice!”

Both of the Minccino’s ears rolled up tight at Lori’s command and a powerful scream rent the air from inside the column of fire. Lori winced from the severity of the sound but managed to keep her eyes on the battle since the attack was not aimed directly at her. All the same, the sound was a frightening cacophony that she rather never hear ever again!

"Clever girl." Cesc muttered, a wry grin resting on his handsome features.

The Hyper Voice attack blasted clean through the Fire Spin, dissipating it easily. Cesc watched as the sonic waves burst out over the field, cutting up the desert and sweeping clouds of sand into the air. Shrieking unhappily as the sand pelted him, Valentine was unable to accurately dodge the wall of sound headed towards him. The blast bowled him over, sending him into one of the jutting buttes.

Hyper Voice had proven to be a formidable offense and defense, and Cesc needed a new way to attack. If Valentine got in close once again, he'd more than likely receive another Aqua Tail, which would more than likely end the match. The Chimchar looked over his shoulder at Cesc, waiting for a command.

"Valentine, Acróbata"

The Chimchar needed to adopt some Run & Gun tactics in order to keep the Minccino at bay. The cute little fluffball was proving difficult at both close and long ranged combat, so he needed to switch between the two. Cesc's Chimchar once again vaulted through the air, aiming to score a powerful hit on the Minccino before retreating back to his own side of the stage once more.

“Chico, no!” Lori gasped, watching on as her partner Minccino was laid a devastating Acrobactics attacks that looked more like a smack-you-hard-in-the-face attack to her. The poor bundle of grey fur that she had called to the field tumbled end over end before coming to a stop in the dust, sputtering up sand irritably. Meanwhile, Cesc’s Chimchar retreated once more to keep a good distance between himself and Chico. Lori chewed her lip and her hair found its way back into her grip.

*He’s keeping away from Chico’s Aqua Tail – that’s for sure… Never give up!*

“Alright Chico!” Lori put out her hands into the familiar hand sign from before. “One more time: Kage Bunshin No Jutsu!”

“Cino!” Chico agreed, also performing the hand sign and summoning five copies of himself amid the dunes with tiny puffs of smoke.

“Now, attack with Swift!”

“MiiinCINO!” Chico’s copies all cried, sweeping their tails around in a quintet of star-generating arcs that flooded the air with golden missiles.

Cesc looked on in admiration as the rush of spinning golden stars flew towards his Pokemon. More impressing than the display was the one-mon combo Lori had pulled off. He needed to start thinking that way, especially when it came to the 1 on 1 portion of the contest matches.

But this wasn't a contest, and his spaced out admiration halted his thought processes. The swift stars were zooming in from all directions, and were homing to boot; there was no dodging them. Not to mention, only a fifth of the projectiles in play were real, as far as Cesc figured, so what happened if Valentine tried to dodge the imaginary ones, only to jump INTO the real ones?

This Minccino was a true ninja.

Screeching in pain as the Swift slammed into him, Valentine sailed through the air from the machine-gun rapidity of the hits. He landed on the ground, only slowly rising up on his elbows. Considering the amount of damage he'd taken so far, Cesc was now just waiting for...

A fiery aura erupted around the Chimchar as he shakily stood to his feet. The air around him visibly heated, sending shimmering waves off of the desert sand in the arena. The fire on his body burned hotter than before, occasionally scorching the rock of the buttes nearby.

"There we go, Valentine! You're still in it! Rueda Fuego!"

Summoning the intense flames around him, Valentine threw himself forward, effectively wrapping himself in cloak of fire. The conflagration seared through the desert arena, aiming for a colossal, dead-on blow with the little chinchilla Pokemon. Valentine wouldn't be able to stand any more hits; this appeared to be his grande finale. A simple "Flamethrower" wouldn't cut it: Cesc needed the air to be thick with suspense, and the attack a beautiful collision!

Even though Lori and Chico’s teamwork had landed another hit upon the Chimchar, it did not seem as though the battle would be won so easily. Cesc’s Pokemon was a strong and agile opponent, able to take Chico’s Swift attack and still come back for more. Not only that, but the Chimchar named Valentine seemed to use his waning energy as a strength, a fiery aura enveloping him in the same way Torrent did for Pipster and Overgrow did for Triss.

“Keep it up, Chico!” Lori cheered encouragement to her panting chinchilla. “You’re doing great.”

Paff! A double team clone disappeared in a cloud of smoke – no doubt about it, Chico was getting tired. Paff, Paff… Paffpaff!

“Cino…” Chico sighed, unable to maintain his clones and still keep fighting. Lori felt her heart skip a beat. Was Chico really OK to keep on fighting?

"There we go, Valentine! You're still in it! Rueda Fuego!" Cesc’s call rang alarm bells in Lori’s ears, his command taking her by surprise as she became engrossed in Chico’s fighting condition. The chinchilla, however, crouched ready for Lori to make another call.

“Chico! Aqua Tail now!”

“Miiin!” Chico rushed back at the flaming mass of Pokemon hurtling towards him, the long grey appendage trailing him instantly soaking with water as he went. Like two missiles, both Pokemon jammed their trajectories straight for one another in an all-out collision. “CINO!”

Chico leapt last moment, swinging his tail under his body and up into the swirling ball of flames approaching him. The arena was instantly filled with the screaming hiss of steam and the cries of two Pokemon as they rebounded painfully from the impact. Dust and sand was kicked up as both forms crashed down hard and the audience watching was hushed to near silence as the steam and sandstorms began to slowly clear.

Lori’s breath caught in her throat.

“Chico?” Her pathetic whisper was almost in audible.

“Chimchar is unable to battle!” The referee’s flag swooshed down even as Lori found the bright brown eyes of her Minccino winking back at her playfully with the thumbs-up. “The winner of this round is Lori Pardare of Littleroot, Sinnoh!”

“Chico!” Lori cried, eyes welling up with fresh tears of joy. Her Pokemon wobbled on short legs only once before the chinchilla collapsed with exhaustion. “Chico!” Lori repeated, running out into the field to grab him up. It was harder than it should be, of course, since the arena was so sandy and the young trainer found herself collapsing in the dust a few feet from her Pokemon.

“M-min…” Chico gasped through ragged breaths, his eyes open and arms reaching weakly toward his trainer.

“I’m coming,” Lori panted, scrambling up awkwardly and ddrawing the Minccino softly into her lap. “You were so so amazing, Chico! I’m so proud of you!” She hugged him, careful not to squeeze too tightly and nuzzled his large ears with her nose, tears rolling silently from her eyes. “We won… We really won…”

Cesc's breath caught fast in his throat as the spectacular collision rocked the entire stage. A cloud of sand burst into the air, complete with swirling steam from the impact of fire and water. The air visibly tensed around the arena, and a thick silence over the field was pierced by the sounds of the other battles raging around them.

Yet with all the distractions, Cesc, Lori, and their section of the crowd stared intently at the swirling mass on the field. Everyone present knew that it had been the final move of the match, and a victor was about to be declared.

As the sand started to clear, the referee's flag shot up.

"Chimchar is unable to battle!"

Cesc didn't bother to listen to the rest. Wordlessly, he moved forward onto the field, not minding that the sand was getting into his immaculate shoes. He knelt down next to his partner and gently scooped him up.

"Chim."

The whimper was barely audible as the penitent looking monkey looked up at him.

"No, no, my friend." pressing the monkey to his chest, he placed one hand on the back of Valentine's head in the softest hug. "An admirable performance; I'm so proud of you."

He looked up across the field to see Lori in a similar position, hugging her champion Minccino to her. In his lap, Valentine stirred, craning to see them as well. Not feeling the need to say anything more at the moment, Cesc and his pokemon partner merely let out a soft smile, each of them giving a thumbs up to their opponents.

Millions of lights burst out all over the stadium. Radiating from every single trainer's belts, purses, pouches, etc, light shot out, blinding everyone for the moment in its brilliance. All Pokemon out on the field returned back into their pokeballs in the flashing of lights.

As the light began to fade, a shout pointed everyone's attention skywards, where a hover of helicopters had appeared in the sky. Without warning, several objects began to fall from them, flung from the helicopters.

As they fell closer to the stadium, the sharper eyes began to note the perfectly spherical shape. The sharper ears would hear the bone-chilling monotone cry of:

"ELECTRODE."

Dozens. Hundreds of the Pokemon fell to the stadium. The swiftly reacting trainers threw out their pokeballs, yelling commands...only to realize that the Pokemon they released were not the ones they had summoned. In fact, they weren't even Pokemon they had caught.

The flashes of light had randomized and shuffled everyone's pokemon.

With the confusion at hand, the Electrode began to impact in the various stadiums, exploding on contact, causing widespread panic throughout the arena.
