I've been considering buying a shine recorder but I wasn't sure - does it increase your chance of finding a shiny egg in the lab / shelter? Or does it just let you say what shiny you're looking for and then keep track of how long it takes to find one? Or other?

It's the hatching of a specific egg, looking for a shiny version of that pokemon. All it does is track it. It says this next to item in the shop: An amazing device that can record how long a trainer spends searching for shiny Pokémon.
