Simple enough. Post singers and vocalists, solo or in a group, that you like. Rappers most definitely count too. Maybe they're not even your all-time favorites, maybe you might even just pop in to post about a vocalist you recently discovered and went "whoa, this guy/gal is awesome!"
There are a hell of a lot of vocalists I like so I'll just post a few for now. Phil Anselmo of Pantera, Down, Superjoint Ritual, and all 347853475 of the other projects he's been involved in I dunno man. I dunno exactly what it is I dig so much about this guy's vocals, but holy cow, he is badass. His vocal style has a great blend of Southern style and conventional metal and hardcore vocals. Great range, he can be very melodic one minute and then he can screech like nobody's business the next. Mike Williams IX of Eyehategod, Outlaw Order, etc. Debatable as to how objectively "good" of a vocalist he is, but damn, I really dig his vocals. Atonal, really ugly (in this case I don't actually mean "ugly" or "atonal" in a derogatory way at all, just as observatory/descriptive), furious sort of shouting vocals. Lots of energy. Henry Rollins of Black Flag, Rollins Band, etc One bad-ass dude. Like with Mike IX and many hardcore/punk vocalists in general, I really appreciate how much raw energy there is in his vocals; he really packs a lot of powerful feeling into them. "Dixie" Dave Collins of Weedeater Some of the raspiest vocals I've ever heard. This guy sounds like he dumps a bucket of gravel down his throat every morning and then washes it down with whiskey . They're not death growls or screams or anything, I wouldn't even call them conventional metal vocals at all, they're just... raspy and pitchless. It's like a metal version of Tom Waits. And it is awesome. Eric Wood (AKA "Throatrake") of Man Is The Bastard, Bastard Noise, Neanderthal, etc This guy's vocals are always atonal, he never sings melodically as far as I know (Between his different projects he must have like at least 100 albums released so yeah), but within those atonal vocals, holy shit, he's got CRAZY range. One second he'll be letting loose some of the lowest, most guttural, monster-like gurgling growls I've heard, the next he'll switch to these really inhuman, demonic sounding "hisses", and then even his more normal, conventional hardcore punk-style shouting is freaking awesome, angry as hell and always really satisfying to hear. Enough of that bull, now post yours! This post has been edited by Abufi: Jun 30 2011, 10:12 AM -------------------- |

Dave Mustaine- How he manages to play those impossible-sounding guitar parts and sing, it just baffles me.
Billie Joe Armstrong- My voice is in the same, I dunno, range as his, which makes it fun for me to sing Green Day. Bon Scott- He's got a crazy voice, and a personality to match it. Sad that he passed on.... -------------------- Came back on a whim because I saw something that reminded me of here. MAD props for Akerfeldt. That guy is freaking amazing - really great clean vocals one second and then the coolest death growls (hell, not even growls - they're freaking ROARS) ever the next.
Mustaine kicks ass as well. Pretty damn unique vocals. (Although, actually the other guitarist in the band usually tends to do the more complex parts, but Dave still does some crazy stuff.) This post has been edited by Abufi: Jun 30 2011, 05:40 PM -------------------- |

Hell yes to MJK, Chris Cornell, Geddy Lee, and Brent Hinds (on the subject of Mastodon, Troy Sanders is also awesome.) All great.
Also, holy shit! Props on the Pig Destroyer mention a few posts above me! Wouldn't have expected them to ever be brought up on this board... go figure! PxDx's early EPs and demos from the late 90s are some of the finest grindcore I've heard. (Not to dismiss their later material at all - I just personally really like their 90s-era material.) M. Shadows from A7X David Draiman from Disturbed Ah, how'd I forget them? M Shadows' voice is insane, especially in Bat Country. And Draiman can do some pretty cool stuf with his voice, like the "Ow ah ah ah ah!" at the beginning of Down With the Sickness. -------------------- Came back on a whim because I saw something that reminded me of here. My top 3 vocalists are (in no particular order, 'cause it changes a lot):
Jeremy McKinnon (A Day to Remember) Matt Davies (Funeral for a Friend) Shane Henderson (Valencia) I can't really explain why, I just love their voices. I think out of those three, Matt Davies will always be my favourite. I've seen Funeral live about 12 times now, and every time his voice is on point and stunning. Shane Henderson's a new one to the list. I always liked his voice, but I saw Valencia live for the first time quite recently and... MAN that guy can sing. There's another guy, who's not in my top 3, but has a special place in my heart: Dan (Soupy) Campbell (The Wonder Years) The stuff this dude writes about... it's like he's writing what I'm thinking sometimes, it's kind of scary. |
