Be thrown into a pit of desperate madness as artists smack each other with banners and avatars to win the grand prize: a single, shiny sticker to be placed upon their heads by joining the Graphic Showdown.

The sticker will not be revealed until there are only two or three people standing, but I promise you this: the sticker is shiny.

There will be several rounds to this tournament, depending on the amount of people who decide to enter.

Each round will get successively more difficult. I will provide themes for each round, and the competitors are to create something that matches this theme to the best of their abilities.

There isn't much as for rules; just as long as you follow basic forums rules and you do not copy other people's work you should be fine.

Note: This is a GRAPHICS contest, not a spriting contest.

Well, yes, CDB is right. You have a wonderful chance and I'm sure you will do fine. =)
And mind you, some of this I'm not all that good at. I'm so lucky this won't involve a lot of spriting since I suck at that.

Round 1

Royal Summoner Kitten vs Aperture
Luminey vs Shinzu

Striked through means that the entry has been submitted.

You have until October 31st to complete the following tasks. If all entries are handed in before that date, then they will be judged immediately so that the contest can move on. You can post them here or PM them to me; I don't mind.

For the first round, you have two tasks:

a) It's Halloween~ Recolor a Ghost, Dark, Bug, or Poison Pokemon so that it's Halloween themed. You can use any render you want (i.e Sugimori) as long as there is no background and it is not a sprite.

b) Render the Gengar from one of the following TCG pics. What this means is that you remove the background through whatever process you'd like so that only the Gengar is left. Some people use the eraser tool, some use paths. It's up to you.

Have fun~ And remember: if you don't know how to do something, you are allowed to use tutorials from wherever you go to find tutorials.

Recoloring and rendering are two basic skills a graphic artist needs ;D

If this is too difficult, please tell me. I'm trying to make it get progressively harder, so if the first round is hard then it isn't going to get any better.

For some reason when I saved the recolor it made a black background. I really don't feel like messing with it, but it there's not supposed to be a background on that one, let me know.

Oh and I hate rendering low quality images with passion >_>

@Luminey: Yep, all you're doing is recoloring for now. That was fast

(The black background is fine, but if both entries are of equal quality, then the background's going to be the deciding factor. ;> Also, I gave out low-quality renders but that doesn't mean you can't fix it up ;D Feel free to make it look better; won't hurt to increase your chances of winning)


Note: If it ends up as a tie between two people then both advance.

So can I edit out the background real quick? We can edit entries, right? I didn't see an rule stating that we wouldn't.
And by fixing it up, does that mean that we can do a vector of it too?

Yep, edits are allowed as long as it's within the deadline. Once all entries are received I'll give two days for everyone to finalize their entries in case they want to edit something.

Vectors are allowed as long as the shading, shape, and color remain the same.

I'm sorry I haven't turned in my entries for this round. I finished the recolor as you can see below. I haven't gotten to the other one. I know that's sad with how little time it should take to do it....

Edit: Just a quick sec. There was one random pixel in the background. *reuploading*

There we go. =) I had originally wanted to make the skin black but then I realized that his original color was black so opted to use red instead. He looks kind of like a gummy to me. =P

Update: Well, more like mini update: On the post with the information for the first round, I have striked through the people who have already gave in their submissions. You are free to change your entry until the deadline or until all entries have been submitted, which ever comes first. You will be given one day to finalize your entry if everything's in before the deadline.

LIA: (Overall: 8/10 Recolor: No apparent errors - very good. Render: Outline is a bit fuzzy.)
CDB: (Overall: 10/10 Not much to say, 'tis good ;>)
Average: 9/10

Shinzu:
LIA: (Overall: 9/10 Recolor: I don't know; something just seems off. Render: Honestly, I felt like this came right off the card.)
CDB: (Overall: 7/10 Recolor: It seemed more like a slight hue change than a recolor; nothing major ;o Render: The colors came out a bit too saturated and when colors are a bit too saturated they feel out-of-place.)
Average: 8/10

LIA: (Overall: 7/10 Recolor: Original coloring, but outline is a bit fuzzy and a bit too thick. Render: Fuzzy outline.)

Edit: Effects might be rather interesting. I personally thought that perhaps round 2 will have to do something with the pokemon you chose to recolor. It was just a thought that ran through my mind while trying to decide which pokemon to choose.

Round Two will end on the 15th of December. If all entries are handed in before that date, then they will be judged immediately so that the contest can move on. You can post them here or PM them to me; I don't mind.

For the second round, you will have three tasks.

a) It's almost Thanksgiving~ Create a matching avatar and banner set that relates to this in any way, be it color or subject or whatever you can think of. You must include the word Turkey in both creations in a way that doesn't detract from the overall quality.

b) It seems like you like effects, so here's a simple effect: Reflect an object onto a shiny surface or water. As long as it looks like a reflection, then it'll be good.

c) What's a graphic without fancy text? For the third part, create a banner using only text. An example would be the FiaHGE first page banner thing. Be creative You can use lots of different fonts to make one big rectangle, or you can make the text form a shape, for example. It's up to you~

Have fun~ And remember: if you don't know how to do something, you are allowed to use tutorials from wherever you go to find tutorials.

OOOO.....I rather like the topics. Task 1 seems like it shall progress quite smoothly. I do have a question about this though: I understand that some people, when making a matching avatar and banner, will simply take a portion of the banner and make it the avatar. Is this what you are looking for or are you looking for something which is not the same as the banner yet expresses the same theme?

As for Task 2: I am intrigued to try a reflection on water.

Task 3: I've got ideas for this.

Both ways are fine; if you think it'll look better by using a portion of the banner, then feel free to do that. If you think that's too bland, then you can create a different but matching avatar. As long as it looks like an avatar and the banner looks like a banner, then it's fine with me ;o

Sometimes the simple fonts can make the biggest impact; fancy fonts aren't always the best~

It was hard finding a decent render to work with. Eh I can't see myself winning this round. I still have no idea what to do for the last part. Guess I have to go download some fonts to get anywhere anyways.

Finally finished although GIMP decided to F*CK ME OVER ONCE AGAIN. I save as a png with no background. and what does it do? Add a background after saving. So the outline looks like crap. I gave up trying to make it look nice after it was ruined, so enjoy. Everything is make with TEXT or SYMBOLS that came with the text pack that I downloaded. Alright, I spent hardly any time on these and I can't spend anymore because of projects. So sorry they suck. I honestly like the turkey banner best and the word banner the least. The reflection also turned out rather bad... I am not very proud of these but quite frankly I just don't care anymore. (Darker skins work best for viewing.)

PS: The quote says "The creative person is both more primitive, more cultivated and more destructive, a lot madder and a lot saner, than the average person."

Edit: I wonder if I made the text banner wrong....

Sadly the sign-ups are closed and we're still waiting for the results of the finally contest. Maybe there will be new one if this one ever gets judged?

And for graphics, we mean things done with photo manipulation or editing. Much like the use of Photoshop or GIMP. Creating things from scratch on the computer and such. Although I view Pixel Art as graphics since it's done digitally, I don't believe we do any spriting for this. I'm sure you could use a sprite for a signature though.

Hopefully I got this right, if not, someone may correct me.

In regards to this topic. Dang...it's been forever. I forgot what I made for the last one and man... I was so rushed at the time, lol. I think more than likely there will be the final stage if these get judged but I doubt they will simply because of the time frame between the cut off date and today.

I'm just curious as to where CDB has been lately. His shop died off a while ago, and I assume it was some hiatus because he did mention that school was becoming very demanding. But even with the work load he never popped in to say he was still kicking and planned on getting back to things eventually.

I just hope whatever he's up to, it's going well and that he comes back soon with less stress!
