Just out of interest, what's this story you want him to have and how come Smoochum is so important to it ?

Well. Simply....Hes an orphan and its the last hing he has from his parents.

I don't get it. Couldn't "the last thing he has from his parents." be any pokemon? Heck, it doesn't even have to be a pokemon; it could be a pokedex or any item. There's got to be more to the story for the pokemon to be a smoochum and nothing else.

Is there a specific reason why it has to be a smoochum? It sounds to me like you're merely refusing to be flexible in a storyline you envisioned before.
