Dodrio, at 5ft 11. Tied with Areodactyl, (if you count it as a bird)
Eevee Master: Staraports pretty small, only 3ft 11. This post has been edited by Flamer: Feb 28 2009, 02:57 PM -------------------- |

I was thinking more of a flying bird than a ground/running bird..
It doesn't make sense that in the anime, they showed Staraptor to be a Giant next to a human. And yet in the game, It says that it's smaller than that. Doesn't make sense at all. Pidgeotto in the first movie carried a human over the sea. The Pidgeotto was collosal compaired to the human. Pidgeot is supposed to be collosal. And yet in game, it's not that big. It's just.. odd and makes no sense.. |

Yeah, but if you think about it a bird who is 4ft 11, (Pigeot) is going to have a absolutly huge wingspan, so when flying it will look enourmous. Although I take your point. After watching the whole of the first series of the anime, I was shocked to see how small there where in the games. -------------------- |

...I think we should try to figure out the realistic wingspans of the bird Pokemon. Because I think that Pidgeot's wingspan would be something like fifteen feet...

Pidgeot is one of the most awesome pokemon ever! It's actually only 4'11"
I'm just throwing out random guesses. Altaria, Fearow, Golbat, .... 5'11" Dodrio/Aerodactyl 6'07" Flygon/ Gliscor Those are the largest bird-like pokemon i could find in my pokedex book. I also saw that Furret are 5'11", but i'm sure it was a typo... -------------------- Uprising (click to show ) |

Flygon and Gliscor aren't really bird like. They've got wings, but brids tend to have beaks and feathers and all that stuff.

Wingspan-wise, birds more suited to gliding will have a larger wingspan in relation to body size than birds which dip and dive. So fearow would have a larger wingspan-heigh ratio than, say, pidgey.
Fearow is based off the anhinga, which wikipedia tells me is "35 in (88.9 cm) in length with a 45 in (1.14 m) wingspan.". So that body:wingspan ratio is 1:1.28. We're given the pokémon height, not the body length, but I guess asking for biological details is asking a bit much xD; Assuming that the ratio holds true for its pokémon counterpart: Fearow is 1.2m, & 1.2 x1.28 = 1.536m estimated wingspan. BUT as fearow can glide for several days at a time, I'd sooner look at the albatross, surely one of the gliding champions in the bird world. For the sake of choosing which one, I'll just take the bird with the largest wingspan, the wandering albatross. "The Wandering Albatross has the largest wingspan of any living bird, with the wingspan between 251–350 cm (8.2–11.5 ft) [...] The length of the body is about 107–135 cm (3.5–4.4 ft)" Taking the larger measurements [o:], the ratio is 1:2.59. Which is a tad bigger, so using fearow for this, it's 1.2x2.59 = 3.108m. Which is quite big. I guess you could get one of the official drawings of a bird pokémon & measure the wingspan and length to get a ratio. If ye were really determined xD; I fear that I'm getting a bit into this <.< sorry about that. Yeah, I'm aware that post is largely mathematical gibberish xD; but I tried.. something. Maths + science + pokémon = Anyhoo. Lugia's the largest bird at 5.2m high, and as stated above, dodrio's the largest non-legendary bird at 1.8m high. The largest non-legendary bird with wings appears to be empoleon, at 1.7m, which is shared with skarmory. -------------------- |

Actually I don't think Aerodactyl is a bird. He's a dinosaur, He ain't got no feathers and I'm sure he has dense bones as regular birds have hollow ones. (not to mention he's a rock pokemon)
And I had a Dodrio that could learn Fly, so if you say he's not a bird because he doesn't have wings, tell that to my flying dodrio. Hey I contradicted some of what i said! Edit Dodrio: 5'11" Skarmory: 5'07" Empoleon: 5'03" Therefore, Dodrio wins the largest bird pokemon prize. (think of it as a chicken, tiny wings and tend not to fly, But they taste great) I think it's pidgeot next at 4'11" And i'm certain that it has the largest wingspan. Not Fearow because it's like 3'11" or something like that... This post has been edited by knil1: Mar 1 2009, 07:03 PM -------------------- Uprising (click to show ) |

(not to mention he's a rock pokemon) I... don't think Areodactyl's a dinosaur. Pterodactyls, which Aerodactyl's based off of, were flying lizardy things, not dinosaurs. I think Dodrio's closer to an ostrich or an emu, though. Although it has magic Fly powers so who knows... -------------------- |

I really don't get what the bid debate is. Ostrichs and emus are both classified as birds, and since Dodrio is based on them, then it is therefore the largest bird Pokemon. End of.
And I think we've also clearly established that Pigeot is the largest bird Pokemon capable of flight. -------------------- |

It scares me how people are still guessing when there are Pokedex sites which tell you the answer... *pats Flamer on the back for being so succinct*

The largest flight-capable one I would think is pidgeot.
The anime (and fanart especially) seems to give a distorted idea of how big the pokemon are compared to what the dex says. For instance, I wanted to draw a pokemon team for myself, so I searched up heights for my team out of curiousity. It turns out, Nidoking is a lot shorter than I originally thought. I pictured him as HUGE pokemon when really he's only 4' 7". Like most people. I'm going to draw him more like the size I imagine him anyway though.
