Global PokédeX Plus Forums _ News and Updates _ An update regarding our community

Posted by: Zerxer Jul 2 2020, 05:07 PM

There's been some unfortunate news we'd like to share with the community because we feel it's important for you all to know.

We recently became aware of the fact that Gryphaena passed away at the end of last month. As many of you know, she's been a very active member of GPX+ for 10 years, especially on our old IRC and on our Discord. I know many of you can say she's been involved in your daily life in this community, she was always eager to help users out through incentives she ran like Sky Gifts and Pal Pad exchange. She's also been vocal in praising the community on Discord and our charity events to organizations such as the ACLU.

While we do not know the specifics of her passing, nor do we wish to speculate, we feel it's important to note that Gryph was very candid about mental health issues and supportive of users seeking professional help if they need it. If you're reflecting on our time spent with her and wondering if there's anything you can do, maybe considering donating to a charity she personally cared about such as the https://suicidepreventionlifeline.org/donate/. GPX will also be donating all July Credit purchases to this charity.

Please remember to seek professional help if you feel you need it, there are free resources available as well.

Please bear in mind that now is not the time for speculation or any inappropriate comments. She was a good member of the community, please give her the same appreciation.

Again, 100% of proceeds from "https://gpx.plus/plus" purchased during the month of July will be donated to the https://suicidepreventionlifeline.org/donate/.

Our thoughts are with her family and friends during this time.

I am so incredibly saddened to hear this. They were very kind always. Always very helpful and open talking about mental health issues. My heart goes out to their family. Thank you, Nick, for letting everyone know.

The process of wondering where she was with everyone on the Discord, worrying for weeks, finding out, having a full blown panic attack, and then working up the effort to pass it along to staff while in a state of complete numbness last night was an awful experience.

I had only spoken to Gryphaena a few times in the Discord, but I was among the nearly 2000 users she helped get the Social Network achievement, and though I can't verify this due to the nature of the system, I'm sure I've received a good amount of Sky Gifts on behalf of her group as well. Despite not being close to her at all, the few times I was able to speak to her I got an impression that matched her unparalleled community efforts that she took upon herself in the 10 years she was with us. Notwithstanding her efforts to make GPX+ a more enjoyable experience for everyone who played, she also made several threads for particularly difficult topics, providing a space within our community to voice their own struggles and experiences, and many can attest to Gryph giving her best effort to help people in a more personalized manner as well if they were feeling upset.

I would like to call attention to two main pillars of her community efforts on GPX+, her groups The Postal Service and The Networking Ninjas. Vital to each group was their founder's passion and constant tending to their duties, and I would hate for this tragedy to cause them both to fall apart.

For The Postal Service, if you are able to do so, I would ask that everyone send out Sky Gifts if they can, tally the amount you have sent, and post the amount to the main thread so it can be added to the total. Before this happened, the group's goal was to get to 10,000 total sent, and as of now they are at 9248 as of May 31, 2020. It would be lovely if this goal could be reached in her memory.

For The Networking Ninjas, I am less sure as to how this group could remain as active as it was. The primary engine of the group was Gryphaena, who always put out public calls to add users in her status and on Discord as well as likely directed her group members privately to add target users. I would like to hear from people in the group who are listed as "PM for SN" and especially Tier Moderators to see if the primary functions of this group can still be maintained.

My heart goes out to her family, friends, and anyone who has been touched by her within the GPX+ community. I hope I have helped further illustrate to those unfamiliar how much of a loss this is and how important Gryphaena was to so many people. In addition to keeping her groups active, any further ideas for how we might honor her memory would be appreciated.

Goodbye, Gryphaena, you will be terribly missed.

This was not something I wanted to read today.. and I can only imagine the feeling of having to deliver this news to the community both through the forums and on discord.

Gryph was a kind and caring person, very active in our community and she played a big part of helping anyone she could. Helping people get the Social Network achievement, making Sky Gifts have more activity, and even taking the time of sending monthly PMs.

We lost a great person and friend. She'll be missed dearly. Thoughts go out to family and friends.

Posted by: vendyjane Jul 2 2020, 07:22 PM

Addendum to my post: In the Discord, we've been brainstorming a way to further memorialize Gryphaena by voting for symbolic options for this month's site-wide shiny hunt. THESE ARE SUGGESTIONS. Remember that a game is not more important than a very real loss, and I, in agreement with several users in the community (and hopefully anyone else reading this), am suggesting these symbolic options to vote for. If they are not picked, or if someone doesn't want to vote for these, I'd rather not see some kind of struggle over it when it's merely a nice gesture memorializing the far more important tragedy.

Our options:
1. Omanyte

An edited picture of Omastar has been Gryphaena's profile picture for years. https://i.imgur.com/wj9YoIJ.png https://i.imgur.com/lOk6WOC.png

2. Wingull

Its evolution, Pelipper, is a mail deliverer in the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series. This symbolizes her Sky Gift delivery group, which is quite fittingly called The Postal Service.

3. Happiny

It evolves when friendship is maxed and its evolutions are heavily connected to deep friendship and love. Gryph's Social Network group, as well as the love she showed to the community, are the obvious connections here.

If you are in agreement with these options, and if you wish, please consider voting for these options in Gryph's memory. Please let me know what you think.

My heart goes out to Gryphaena's family and friends. The loss of a loved one is never easy.

I didn't interact with her much outside of Networking Ninjas, but I know that she put a lot of effort into helping other users enjoy the site and brought us together to achieve something wonderful.

Vendyjane has brought up Gryphaena's groups already. I'm also not sure how Networking Ninjas will maintain their level of activity, granted I think the majority of us worked quietly. We haven't achieved Gryphaena's goal of 2,000 users having unlocked SN yet, but are so close. I'll be thinking of her when we do reach that goal.

Posted by: Sunsette Jul 2 2020, 08:02 PM

This is heartbreaking to hear. I'm not very active in the social side of GPX, but I've been here for almost 10 years now and have seen her doing things around the site for all that time, including helping me out with the Social Network achievement like she did many others. Though we didn't interact much personally, I know she was a wonderful, valued member of the community, and my heart goes out to her friends and family.

Posted by: Eryth Violet Jul 2 2020, 08:23 PM

Came back to GPX last July/August, and only days afterwards I had unlocked Social Network. I just happened to look in the Discord and see that she had posted my profile there, asking people to add me. It told me a lot about her. She always posted things like that, just to help people in this game, when she had zero obligation to.

I didn't know her well, but she was very kind, and she's already missed.

Posted by: virtualpet Jul 2 2020, 08:37 PM

Our system has not been too active in the community , but we still recognize Gryph even if we only interacted with her very scarcely. Hearing people talking about her makes us wish we had known her better since she sounds like an incredible person, and I think I can speak for all of us that we are saddened by her death.

Posted by: Yamper Jul 2 2020, 09:01 PM

Gryph had a lasting effect on our community, through helping almost 2,000 users with Networking Ninjas for the Social network achievement and The Postal Service for Sky Gift distribution.

Whilst I do not Gryphaena personally, she has been a longstanding member of the IRC and Discord server throughout the years who has often promoted great positivity and showed great approvement towards some site decisions (such as ACLU donations).

I don't really have many words to say as I've been active alongside her for a number of years (probably totalling nearly a decade now) so it's hard. Very hard.

My heart goes out to her family and those affected during this saddening time. Wherever she may be, I hope she is at peace.

Posted by: Enji Jul 2 2020, 09:10 PM

I was at one of the lowest point in my life and I put'' could really use a hug right now'' in my status not expecting anyone to care but Gryphaena was very kind and checked on me, im grateful for that and will always be. Rest in peace Gryphaena.

Posted by: Unnoticeable Kohai Jul 2 2020, 09:28 PM

"I hope today brings you everything you need"

Gryph always ended her pm's to me with that, when she was asking for me to add someone for Social Network. It was a bit of kindness, a small well-wish, and now, I realize the weight of those words.

Thank you, Gryph, for all that you've done. You really helped built this community, with small things like trinkets/sky gifts, Social Network, and just being a positive force in this place.

Thank you.

Posted by: Lord Raven Jul 2 2020, 10:24 PM

Gryph was an energetic person who was always willing to learn and willing to do what's right. She was electric and she spread positive vibes and was never afraid to speak her mind or hear thoughts, and never afraid to help someone out in need. It's such a sad, sad loss.

This is probably one of the hardest years in a long, long time for everyone. Stay in touch everyone, stay safe, don't be afraid to reach out and all the love and prayers to everyone, especially Gryph's family right now for the loss of a wonderful person.

Posted by: Megatron Jul 2 2020, 10:40 PM

I was another person who interacted with Gryph only a small handful of times, but as a lurker on Discord it was clear to me how much she cared for everyone, and reading what a force for good she was through everything she did both on the site and off it I hope is something everyone remembers her fondly by. My deepest, sincerest condolences to her family and friends.

Posted by: Darth Krytie Jul 2 2020, 10:57 PM

My deepest and most heartfelt condolences to everyone who knew, cared for, loved Gryphaena. I did not know her well personally, but as a member of our community, she was one of ours, and therefore precious to us.

Posted by: ThunderMoss Jul 2 2020, 11:03 PM

I had only a few interactions with Gryph on Discord. These exchanges and others I observed always made me happier and a better person. I will remember this long after this great sadness fades.

Posted by: Doot Jul 2 2020, 11:21 PM

I only had a handful of interactions with Gryph, but I remember well that she and I helped each other bring our spirits up a few times in the Discord. She was one of the sweetest folks I met through this community, and was incredibly selfless. A beacon of light and love to us, really.

I hope for peace for her and her family in this time, and when I am back home, I will be lighting a purple candle for them.

You will be missed, dear Gryphaena.

Posted by: The Majestic Mr L Jul 2 2020, 11:33 PM

I'm not great with these sorts of things, but...
I admit I have been away from GPX+ for a decent amount of time, though I am incredibly active on the Discord and while I also admit I did not talk much with Gryph, she was genuinely a kind, caring person and such a vibrant soul. This year has been one of the hardest on myself and so many others personally, on top of everything going on in the world right now, and it still doesn't feel real losing such a well-known member of our community.
I have nothing but the deepest of sorrow and give my thoughts and prayers to her family. She was there for me when my mom passed away just this January. It's only right I return the favor.
Please take care of yourselves, this has been such an incredibly awful year and no one deserves to have to go through what Gryph's family undoubtedly is.
Peace and love.

Posted by: Mystickatt Jul 3 2020, 02:16 AM

Though I never interacted with them, my condolences go out to everyone affected. I feel the loss even though it's someone I never spoke to. It's sad to hear that a member of my community isn't here anymore. Everything I heard was positive and clearly this member of our community was an amazing, beautiful person.

Thank you for announcing this, and again my thoughts are with the family and friends who are affected.

Posted by: Zero Gravity Jul 3 2020, 03:10 AM

I never met this person nor have I talked, or had a PM interaction with her. But I am aware of them to a very small degree. No life should leave this world too soon. Maybe it's coincidence I recently donated to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, but I will not hesitate to donate to it again right now just for her.

I hope she's resting well.

Posted by: Cycloneblaze Jul 3 2020, 03:54 AM

While I can't say I knew her personally, I have known Gryph for a long time. I remember talking to her on these forums, on IRC and then on Discord, for at least half a decade. I was happy to have helped her out by making the avatar she still has on this forum.

Gryph seemed like one of those people who was just a part of the community, who would always be there. She was always positive and thoughtful, a lot of people who are much younger on this site than I can attest to that. Her disappearing so suddenly and permanently is a complete shock. She was young, making progress in her life, and it seems unfair that she had to go this soon.

It's heart-warming to see staff make this thread and see a lot of users coming together to remember her! It makes a sad day a little brighter. omastar.gif

Posted by: KatTheBard Jul 3 2020, 05:48 AM

Much of my interactions with Gryph had been over Discord and through NN. When I returned from hiatus in 2014 (2015?) I can safely say that her devotion and dedication to this community were part of what kept me here.

Gryph was loved and will be so, so missed.

Posted by: Akane Kurashiki Jul 3 2020, 05:51 AM

I've never been too active in the forum nor am I on the GPX Discord server, so I can't really say I knew her, but Gryph was such a notable contributor that it deeply saddens me to read the news. My condolences to her family and friends, she was a great person and it's awful that she left us so soon.

Posted by: Kingis Jul 3 2020, 07:29 AM

We have talked with Gryph several times. I am very sorry to hear about this. She has been very active in the Discord too, where we got to talk. She always appeared happy and full of glee and ready to help others.
I have adjusted my vote for SWSH to vendyjane's suggestions and will also get some credits to help.
We will miss you, Gryph.

Posted by: Equitial Jul 3 2020, 08:29 AM

I have spoken to Gryph a handful of times on Discord. I can't say I knew her well, but I always enjoyed her kindness when talking to her. Even before I started participating in the community, Gryph had an impact on life with her openness about her mental health.

Like Gryph, I struggle with my mental health, and I've done so since a young age. For much of my life, I felt alone in this regard. However, when Gryph started their mental illness thread, they became one of the first people I had encountered being openly mentally ill and neurodivergent. And not only were they mentally ill and neurodivergent, but they also started the LGBT+ thread at a time when I was only just acknowledging my queer identities. I didn't have the courage at the time to respond, but, when I eventually joined the GPX Discord, the knowledge that there was someone "like me" bolstered me while I struggled against my social anxiety to say anything at all. I will forever respect their openness and kindness.

Gryph had an impact on my life without even speaking to me much, and I can't imagine what his closer friends and family must be going through. He was a wonderful presence in life and it is unfair that he has passed so soon. I have his loved ones in my thoughts. and I hope he rests in peace.

As soon as I read the name on the second sentence I felt my heart sink. I used to be a tier mod in the Social Network group a while ago. I always tried keeping an eye on the group even though my activity in the site is not what it used to be, and I always got a smile on my face seeing Gryph trying their best and still going strong with the Groups. I admired Gryph for that. I had thoughts here and there of maybe coming back and helping her a bit but I never got around to it because "I was too busy" sad.gif. Wish I had done so...

Gryph will be missed. My condolences to everyone. I hope Gryph is in a better place now.

R.I.P.

I can't even express how shocked and sad I am now. I used to message Gryph because I initially proposed to help giving her trinkets to transform in sky gifts to deliver to eveyone. We talked about many things including our mental helth issues, she told me about her depression and difficulties to find a job. I feel like crying...
Rest in peace Gryph, you wll be missed crying.gif

RIP Gryphaena, i didn't know you personally but know how much you meant to this community and put so much time into it. Fly free!

Posted by: Shinyx Jul 3 2020, 02:56 PM

This is really heartbreaking. Even though I've never been active within the community, I was still able to see just how much care Gryphaena put into this site and its members. I've only spoken to them very briefly, but the amount of kindness and positivity they spread with everyone was incredibly inspiring.

I'm going to spend the rest of the day making as many Sky Gifts as I can in her memory. Thank you for sharing this news in such a thoughtful way, and thank you to all who donate this month. Rest well Gryphaena, you will be very missed.

Posted by: Snom Jul 3 2020, 07:00 PM

I'm absolutely devastated at this loss. Gryph and I had our own little succulent club with just her and I in Discord where we would go back and forth on what we had blooming. My Queen of the Night bloomed the night before I found out she passed and I had posted pictures on our #wholesomestunfisk channel eagerly awaiting her reply when she saw them in the morning. To know that I'll never get these silly exchanges ever again really hurts my soul. She helped me realize even the most neglected plants had some of the best blooms. I encourage everyone to get their own neglected plant and bring out its special light. It's something she would have loved to have seen.

Posted by: Yamper Jul 3 2020, 09:06 PM

To those who are reading this:

We are currently trying to achieve something that Gryph was not able to before her passing. We are trying to reach the Networking Ninja's goal of 2,000 users unlocking Social Network.

If you are reading this and do not have the achievement, PLEASE send me a message so I can add you to the list. We have a lot of active users on our Discord who want to fulfil this achievement and we would love to get it done before the end of the month.

If you want to help out in any way, please head over to the group. https://forums.gpx.plus/index.php?s=&showtopic=72355&view=findpost&p=2503625

We are currently sat a 1975 users so we only need 25 more users to go.

Thank you.

I'm not a sociable person, I only visit the forum to read the big announcements, but even I had heard of Gryphaena. How incredibly sad, my sympathy goes out to you all.
I have a load of trinkets, I've sent about 100 sky gifts today but I'll be sending more over the coming days.
I also freed up room on my PalPal and added some people to help them get their SN achievement.
I've voted for Omanyte for the next shiny hunt, what a great idea!
I'll be raising a glass for her tonight too.

Posted by: Ness 64 Jul 4 2020, 11:34 AM

I literally never posted on the forum and I still don't have any plans of becoming a regular (this may very well be the only time I ever post here), but I can't stay quiet about this anymore. I'm another of those who barely knew Gryphaena (if that), but I'll share some of the very few experiences I had with her, hopefully to show those who didn't know her the kind of person she was.

Gryph is pretty much the reason I have a good trinket collection on the site today (and, for that matter, the reason I barely care about trinkets instead of not caring at all), as one day back when I was in the Discord server, she sent me practically all trinkets I didn't have and she did. And when I say all trinkets, I mean all of them. She sent me even the ones she only had 1 copy of, which meant I spent a while giving the literal hundreds of non-spares back to her (couldn't complete my own collection at the cost of another's, it feels wrong), and had to tell her she should only send spares if she wanted to do this again. After this, she kept sending some new spares whenever she got a chance. I could say about half the trinkets I have (if not more) are thanks to her (other people helped too, but I'm pretty sure she sent the most), and I never could repay the favor because her own collection was almost complete, I didn't have anything unique I could give her (not even 1-copy trinkets, she had those too) and I didn't know she took spares for Sky Gifts.

And even though I never asked for anyone's help with this, she apparently tried to help me get the Social Network achievement anyway (check her journal out).

I never got to talk to her much (after that, I just checked her profile occasionally and tried to help someone she mentioned to get SN if they were close enough, and that was it), but it's clear these stories of mine are nothing compared to how hard she tried to help others in this site, and even less compared to how good of a person she was, not just to the community, but as a person in general. For any of the newer members reading this (and maybe wondering why so many Sky Gifts are popping up lately), this announcement being in the site itself was not in vain; we lost a major member of this community, and you can see some of this on this thread. Things really won't be the same after this.

It's too late to say this to her, but I'll say it anyway: Thank you for everything, Gryphaena. You will be missed, but you will not be forgotten.

On another note, vendyjane's idea was a good one. I already voted for all 3 she mentioned, and I'm already breeding Omanyte since yesterday. I'm set on not breeding anything else for the rest of this month regardless of what happens, but I'll be really disappointed if at least Omanyte doesn't show up in the next site-wide shiny hunt.

I'm so sorry to hear about this. My condolences and prayers go out to her family.

Hello there. I have never posted on the forums neither am I active on here, but I am one of Gryphaena's friends from Discord and Poliwager. Gryphaena was a very sweet individual who recently became more active a while ago back in the community I am most active in, Poliwager. I met her through the Discord and she helped me obtain a lot of trinkets that I didn't have on here since I planned my goal to at least collect all of them, however long it may have taken. I found out she was on GPX+ and that is how I ended up knowing her and we also hung out on the Poliwager Adoptables as well, where I'm most active. The last I saw of her on our Forums was when I was promoted to Sectional Moderator and she was one of the first people to congratulate me on the Discord as well. She had a very bright and wonderful personality about her and gave off such a positive aura within our Community as well. I often come on here (Adoptables section of this site) to collect Pokemon and Trinkets and participate in the shiny hunts. The previous post I read of suggestions for the next shiny hunts I am all in for! I am deeply saddened to just learn of her passing and I hope she rests in peace. I have also coordinated with our site's Admin to make sure that our small and tightly-knit Community is aware of this as well. She was a very active member in our Community and she will be missed by all of us. May she rest in peace.

Love,
Ivey

You're welcome. We'll be making a post tomorrow morning. We're also doing an Omanyte shiny hunt next month in her memory as well. I will try to start being an active member on these forums as well since she isn't the only user that our sites have in common. If anyone of you needs someone to talk I will drop my Discord as well and you can just add me and DM there. We'll all get through this together!

My heart and prayers and thoughts go out to Gryph and her family and friends as well. As Poison said, we will also be posting something soon.

Gryph joined my site 4 years ago, and was active for a time, but then came back a few months back after some inactivity. She was always so pleasant to talk with and so friendly, and asked questions and participated in nearly everything. I knew she was active here as well, because she'd ask me about GPX once in a while too. It brought me joy seeing all the heart she put into everything. She was such a kind soul, and I hope she's in a better place now.

Posted by: Permalocked Jul 4 2020, 08:05 PM

I never talked to Gryphaena, but I would see her online often and her name on in a lot of threads here. She'll be missed here for sure. May she rest in peace and my condolences to her family.

Wow, terrible news. So sorry to hear this. I didn't interact a ton with Gryph but was certainly very aware of her presence in the community. Sending condolences to her family and friends.

Although I never met Gryphaena (I'm not on Discord and I only really check the forums for announcements), I've seen the username online a lot. From the responses here, I can tell that they were not just heavily involved in this community but cared deeply for it, and the community shared that love with them.

Such awful news. My condolences to their loved ones, including people here who had the opportunity to interact with Gryph.

(I'll be sure to vote for those suggestions too. It may not be much, but with everything going on right now, every act of kindness is valuable.)

Posted by: GymLeaderWinona Jul 6 2020, 05:28 PM

I am on and off GPX+ a lot, but I saw Gryphaena and her work often. She was very well-loved in this community and my heart is heavy with her loss. May you find peace, dear. We will honor your memory.

I wanted to give an update on this month's fundraiser:

At nearly one week in to July, we've already raised $250 for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.

Thank you all.

Posted by: Running On Ice Jul 7 2020, 01:51 AM

I haven't been as active as I have been in the past few years, but I can see how much of an impact that Gryphaena has had on this community. I send my condolences to her family, friends, and everyone on here who has known her.

Posted by: Gryphites Jul 10 2020, 02:27 AM

Truly horrible news.

I've been playing GPX+ for over a decade now, but have never really been a part of the community, just casually clicking stuff and lurking around.
Gryphanea was the only person, I think ever, who actually messaged me with the intention of making friends. We kinda bonded over the fact our usernames are similar. She sent me so many trinkets, which helped me to get an achievement. She's one of three people who are in my Pal Pad. Everytime I noticed she interacted with my critters, I smiled.

I know this is not much - there are people who have been far more involved with her than me, and who are now far more affected by her passing. But her reaching out to a "nobody" like me really shows what kind of person she was.

May she rest in peace.

I did not posted here yet as I did not had much personal contact with Gryphaena. However, after reading this thread and seeing all the amazing things she has done for this community, I can't help but feel incredibly sad that we have lost such an amazing member. She was truely a super kind and helpful person. I'm sure I have gotten many skygifts from her (initiative) and she helped others on the path of succes or completion.
I wish my condoleances to everyone, especially her friends and family. And I hope wherever she is that she is at peace now, and can continue giving us skygifts, but this time by being a star in the night sky.

While I did not know Gryphaena personally, I agree with what Dark Krytie said. As a member of our community she was one of ours and therefore precious. A life cut short is always a tragedy and I am sorry for the family’s loss and pray that they can find comfort through the haze of sorrow that they must be swimming in.

Gryphaena was a very talented woman and, just through recounting what she has done here in our community, I know that she was very caring and giving of herself. I hope that her family knows how special she was and that many feel her absence now.

On this note, I wanted to mention that our staff did share a kind message with her family about how loved she was in our community and how many have spoken out about the positive impact she's had.

Thank you for doing that, Zerxer. I'm sure the family is grateful to have been contacted and made aware. love.gif

I've just made the $455 donation to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.

Thank you, everyone, for your donations last month as well as all of the kind words, thoughts, and actions.

Oh my God, Gryphanea!! :O

I am so late to find out, I'm not involved in the community at all so I didn't know...

I never even click those forum links, but I did today and I read her name in the post and I am so surprised, I KNOW HER!

She's on my Pal Pad and I'm on HERS! She gave me TONS of trinkets over the last half a year I think... and I couldn't even give her one :( I tried, I checked from time to time if I have even one thing to give to her and she had everything already :'D

This is so sad for me, coming from a person not involved in the community, just casually clicking, she was the one I remembered the best. She was so generous without knowing me at all, it must be a tragedy for her family and friends to lose such a gem of a person :( Rest in Peace lovely person I wish I knew, I will remember you </3
