I don't quite know where to put this topic, but it seems that this would be the best place.
well, I started this thread because I can't grasp what time is. Some people said, that before the Big Bang, there wasn't any time. So is time just something we make up or is it an actual thing? share your thoughts. -------------------- Nintendo 3DS FC: 5327-1215-2976

I, like many many many other people, cannot grasp time either. It is the basis of the 4th dimension maybe? This is why i like dialga so much, the master of time, and that if i could control time like dialga can my life would be fantastic, as most of my problems seem to be caused by the passage of time. Being able to control time would solve pretty much all my major problems. I think the only way to describe time is to use the word time itself, but when the meaning of the word time is unclear then how can we explain what time is. I think most of us know what it is but can't put it into words, anyone got an idea?

time...
u know... there is a song by Steve Conte where he says: "To everything, turn turn turn There is a season, turn turn turn And a time to every purpose on to Heaven A time to be born A time to die a time to sow a time to reep" and so on... so basically, I think Time is simply the order in wich events occur... Like Steve Conte also says: "Days are just like moments turned to hours" -------------------- [align=center]Current Quest: Waiting...

I don't want to say time is an abstract concept, but humans basically divided time into 24 different hours. Otherwise, it's really only morning, afternoon and night. That's probably what early humans saw it as. Stonehenge shows us that a system for time and was created in 2200 B.C. (Wikipedia). So humans grasped the concept of time a long time ago. Is there time on other planets? Sure, as long as we apply our system to that planet. Of course, my post could make no sense...

yeah...time is a really arbitrary concept and I don't think anyone really understands it.
But I've had quite a many friends with interesting discussions on it, so I'll try to combine all their takes in my say here. Not saying its right, wrong, or anything. Just some stuff to ponder Time is supposed to be the basis of the fourth dimension. We appear to have that down. But with that said, if time is the fourth dimension, an interesting tidbit is that everything, then, exists in 4-D. Why? Consider this example: Draw a line on a piece of paper. Your line is technically considered 2-D (3-D if you want to get technical since it actually DOES have depth but...). However, if your line did not exist in the 4th dimension (assuming it is time), then it would simply disappear. The line would be instantaneous, and then gone. Why? Because time keeps the line EXISTING. Even instantaneous notes time, so technically without time, your line would not exist at all. You would not exist at all, following this concept's thought. While its a bit of an odd and crazy theory, I find it fun to listen to my friends explain it, so I thought I would share with everyone I think things like time have always 'existed', but just because humans/life wasn't around, we assume that means it didn't. If there was ANYTHING at all, then all our principles, etc. would have to exist with it, wouldn't they? Again, I'm not saying any of this is right or wrong or anywhere in between, and I'm not saying I fully agree with some of the concepts my friends have of time. But since this is a discussion on it I thought I would share them with everyone to ponder -------------------- You have been challenged by PokePrincess Bri! Got my brain hurting from hearing the word "dimension" all those times... AND THERE IS A PART 2.... but thats pretty much the concept of time, in my point of view alright... Kudos to Etnie... =D -------------------- [align=center]Current Quest: Waiting...

I think of time like this.
Each moment is happening, during every moment. Each moment happens... an infinity of times. My way of describing time is very complicated, and is hard to understand, mind you. It's kind of like a movie reel. Each little frame is a moment in time, and that moment is constantly repeated over and over. as you read this, there are past selves of you reading the first part of my post, and future parts of yourselves doing whatever you're going to do next. The future is predetermined, and even if it seems like you have two choices, and you could go either way, you actually have no choice. Say you want to either get a doughnut with strawberries on top or blueberries on top. You'll think LONG and HARD because that's what happens. You will choose blueberry, because that's how it WILL happen. I hope I made my views clear. |

Actually i've no idea.
But i believe that time is related with other dimensions. The power that makes the events ocurr in this moment and not in another one. It's a instrument of chaos to make things unclear and to confuse the cetic minds that are allways trying many and many times to solve it's eternal puzzle.. Ow God it's so poetic. |

Time is an illusion; you cannot go backwards (I mean far back to the dinosaurs) in it because it doesn't exist. The only thing we can do is move forward and hope for the best of humankind.

Time in my opinon is a REAL thing. There's prove all around us. For example, we age. Time controls everything around us, it influeneces everything. Time is the basis of life. Without Time, everything would confusing to say the least, we cannot live without Time.
In fact, you're techinically going forward in time when you drive a car 60mph, when someone is walking 1mph etc. I think Time probably did exist before the Big Bang, because people say WHEN did the Big Bang happen? It had to happen some time. Since the Big Bang released the main chemicals of the universe, those chemicals needed TIME to form. So yeah, Time may have existed before the Big Bang, or maybe not. Its a mind buddling question. -------------------- |

But is it 'time.' or the result of chemical reactions manifesting themselves in results we call 'aging.' Specific changes occur in muscles to form wrinkles, tears in the muscles of the eye from repeated use cause us to lose focus and require glasses, the death of melanin cells turns hair gray, etc.
Is it time, or is the latest part in an endless goldburgian contraption? 'Time' as we understand it is a human invention; something we have quantized, named, and standardized the measure of. In nature, time is a measure of reactions. As for time travel, while we can technically go forwards through time by traveling at extremely high speeds, I don't think we can go back. -------------------- |

I do not believe in time.
I think time was created by humans so they could organize their lives. I believe everything occurs simultaneously, but we are not aware of it. Why do we exist only in the present? What is the difference between our memories and our current feelings? What is "now"? Right now I am typing, but every word is now in the so-called past. I hope that made a moderate amount of sense. -------------------- |

Time isn't something that is "real" but in another sense it is. It is something we made up and we made for convenience. If you ever look around even messy people have some sort of pattern. We as humans have to have some sort of organization which is why anarchy couldn't work. it would last for a while then you would notice small groupings of people with similar beliefs trying to get everyone to join them. Time is just there so we can be organized and know when to be somewhere.

If you really want to mess up your brain read "Schrodinger's kitten". it a nice none-math physics book. I can explain most the concepts, but if your ever in need of staying up all night unless you cease to exist upon going to sleep , that book will get you there.
