Hello, and welcome to Flygon's Spriting school. Here you can learn basic recolors, all the way to scratch spriting!
Do I expect your sprite to be perfect the first time?
No.
Do I expect your sprite to be good the first time?
No.
Do I expect your sprite to be even the tiniest bit decent the first time?
No.
Anything you give me that is any one of these will be a pleasant surprise.
You aren't supposed to complete the lesson in one go. I give you a generic explanation, you show me what you thought it meant, and we start honing in on your little mistakes, until its near perfect.

Requested pokemon you want to learn with? My favorite Pokemon, Magikarp, Taillow and Magnemite.

Note: The only program it would be convenient for me to use right now is Microsoft Paint, although I might use a different program soon. It should work well enough.

Tartii, looks good! I'll write your lesson shortly. I wouldn't recommend anything other than MS Paint. It is simple and very effective
Shadow, lets get started.
Ok. So, lets get a picture of a sunkern

Easy right?
For this tutorial, lets make sunkern have arms and legs. I want you to zoom in on sunkern, get your pencil, and shabbily draw some arms and some legs. Nothing perfect needed by far.

Not exactly Jesus.
Next, zoom in and erase all the corners.

Looking better...
Now, right now, I want you to decide where the sun is coming from, try to match it to the rest of the sprite.
It is coming from the left upper diagonal. So, first, fill in everything with your base color.

Now, lets make it start shading. Pick the next darkest color and start shading realistically.

And keep going till you've used all the colors.

Now, take the color used on the outline other than black, and trace it along the lighter parts. Don't be too generous.

And you're done! This is just basic scratch, so nothing too complicated or amazing right now.
Now its your turn! Do what I did.

Very good first try! So, heres the things you need to work on (you don't have to redo the whole thing.)
1. Please erase the corners - no pixels touching other pixels on the outline unless its a straight line. If you need me to explain it some other way, please ask.
2. It'd be nice if you could make the background transparent. The way you do this is -
a. go to ezimba.com
b. go into your sprite, and color the background a color not even related to any color in the sprite
c. upload your image to ezimba, go to transparent on the right, pick the color you used for your background, and adjust the fuzz (what I call leaning room) until it makes your background color go white. If it makes any of the rest of your sprite go white, undo. Once it is done, use that image url, and it will be transparent.
3. Please do not go up and down and up and down on a curved surface. (I'm talking about the left hand.)
Other than that, it looks good! Keep improving. If you could show me a sprite with these improvements, we'll start on trainers.

I understand this is a simple thing but.. may we offer critiques? Well not really a critique, merely a q.

By that, I just basically mean the legs/arms on the right of Sunkern should really attack on front of the body, in FRONT of the outline opposed to being behind it (if this is what you count as 'complicated' I apologise lol)

Dragon accepted! I'm currently on my phone right now, so you're tutorial will be written soon. Shadow , very nice improvement, you have completed Basic Scratch. I will make your tutorial shortly and Samoo, that you very much for your criticism, I love it, but for basic scratch, I'm just trying to familiarize them with drawing something, and then make it blend in with the rest of the sprite. Thanks again! Tartii, that's fine, do it whenever you can!

Alright Shadow, lets get started! First, get your sprites. Lets start with a nice, easy sunkern. XD

Alright, first thing, lets decide what we are going to change. Let's keep the skin, add the plant, eyes, lose the arms, add the stripes. Let's do it.
1. Add the plant. You should have had enough experience with fusions if you took the scratch course to remove the hat, and scratch anything you need so that it looks realistic. Again, if theres any confusion, please tell. This is difficult.

2. Next, the eyes.

3. Next, scratch the arms off.

4. Finally add some stripes. If you want, you change change the clothes color and the skin.

Alright. There we have it. The stripes are the feet, and again, change skin and clothes if you want.
Let me see your take on it. Everyones is different.

Nice first try, this is a very difficult subject.
Alright first off, use your newfound scratching powers to fill in the holes left by the arms.
Second remember to add the outline, add either black or a dark color to every part of it.
Nice try on the head, just put the outline on it and i'll accept it.
You seemed to forget the stripes on the feet. They were the initial stripes, therefore important.
Finally, if you could move the left eye over a smidge, it would seperate better.
Nice try nonetheless! I could tell you tried to grasp the subject.

Tartii: No problem! Now, there is an easier way, but this will provide the best results.
1: Go into your sprite, and surround the background with a color not related to anything on the sprite.
2: Go into Ezimba.com and upload your sprite.
3. Go into transparency, select your color, and adjust the fuzz (leaning room) until your background goes white. If any other part goes white, choose another background color.
4: IE: Right click your image, go into "Properties", and it should popup with a window. Find "Image Address" and copy what follows.
Chrome/Mac: Right click your image, click Copy Image Address
Once the address is copied, go into your post, pick the fourth button above the text box, it should say "Insert Image", and paste your image address. You're done, and your image is transparent, making it look great. if its complicated, I will explain it another way.

Try #2 (click to show)

You're definitely getting better.
Good job with the arms, very impressed.
Your outline improved, however you are still missing it around the head, back, and legs.
Stripes look great!
The eyes still look a little awkward. I'd reccomend switching them, but I do not expect you to.
So, just finish your outline, and I'd say you are done. If you want, I can go a little more detailed with the problems, and help you with the head. But it isn't required for you to get a good understanding of this skill.

Hm, not working. Did the (apparently) exact color of the background and it's not working.
