So, my profile hasn't been approved yet, but I was wondering. Since an Onix is holycraphuge, would, say, a Tyrouge using mach punch have much of an effect on it? Low Kick would be a different matter, but it just doesn't seem like it'd do much.

Edit/Add On: Likewise, Onix using Tackle vs. Flareon (example 'cuz it has high attack) using tackle. The fact that Onix is a giant rock snake should take priority to Flareon's atk power.

I think it's evident in the anime that size rarely matters, unless we're talking about the absolutely huge. Ash's pikachu was able to beat Brock's Onix (and other ground types, which just rankles me) despite a type disadvantage. In your question, a Tyrogue using Mach Punch would probably not OHKO an onix, but it would hurt enough for the Onix to realize it was in trouble.

As for the second question, I think the smaller Flareon would probably hit first, but due to most rock types superior defense, if they were the same level, it wouldn't do too much to the Onix. Whereas the Onix would conceivably do more to the flareon, due to size/weight. That's one of the few places where anime style combat would trump game style (the onix doing more damage due to weight in the anime style, rather than stats being the only thing to determine hit/damage.)

Hm... well, okay, then. I still think that a mach punch would be rather weak, but whatever.

Well, I'm not a mod, and it's up to how you RP. The reason why I said Mach Punch would do more damage to an Onix is that Rock types are weak to Fighting, so it's power doubles. If he used Mach Punch on, say, a Ground type with high defense (say a Sandslash) he probably wouldn't do much damage.

A typical advantage to show how the anime copes with this difference can be seen in the Oreburgh Gym episodes. Paul's Chimchar can THROW an Onix when using Dig, but it took 2 repetitions of the attack (and a Brick Break) to actually defeat it. Also, check out how many times his Elekid had to hit Cranidos with Brick Break before it finally went down. And just because Onix is huge, it doesn't make it uber-powerful against smaller Pokemon. Elekid gets hit by 2 Slams and a Double Edge from Onix and STILL manages to battle Cranidos later on.

In short, it doesn't matter too much as long as you don't make anything ridiculous. Since we're writing in anime-battle style, I think it would be safe to say around 4-6 Mach Punches from a Tyrogue would make an Onix give in. Tackles, however, would need in the region of 20+ etc.

I guess this is part of the whole "type isn't the only thing that matters - you have to consider level, too" scheme of things.

It's pretty much what everybody else said. Basically, physics and Pokemon don't mix well, so we only use what we want. Like gravity.
