In an interview with one of the anime's creators, I read that Ash's grandfather was a great Pokemon Master. Ash's father took off in his father's footsteps, as Ash would his own father's.

I think the ash's dad is dead by now..(no offense) but the show has been going on ever since my parents were born i think-and the books are pretty old too...So theres a possibility right there..

It actually is possible that he is dead and that's why no-one mentions it, but I'm pretty sure that the makers just haven't tought of it. It's not like Pokemon's intrested about their family-ties - the main plot is to follow this trainer Mr. Awesome during his journey to be a Pokemon Master, which he will never be in order to continue following his process.

BUT wild speculations are fun, so.
I'd like to say that prof. Oak is Ash's dad. Oak and Ash's mom (Sorry, can't remember name, I'll refer her as a "mom" now) seems to be in pretty good terms. But that wouldn't explain why Ash reacts in no way to Oak more than that he's a good professor, and I doubt Gary would be so snappy towards him if they belonged in the same family. And for some reason I was tempted to write breed. Let's move on.

So I'd more likely say GIOVANNI. >:V He left Mom alone long ago because he's so bad guy and that's why he doesn't know Ash - now wait have he still ever even seen him? Well anyway. Giovanni is one of the most possible answers from the characters what we've seen.

Wasn't there also some guy in the TV fighting with Elite team, in the very beginning of the series? That could be too, but I doubt it.

Anyways,seriously it's professor oak, come on. we all know ash's mom and oak have been buddy buddy for YEARS. it's not weird for older guys to like younger girls, and i'm a younger girl who like much older guys so i know the parallel works too. ash and oak have similar looks, act alike, and i so see ash being absent minded but smart in his older age. argue with me if you must, but this is what i shall believe!

EDIT: ya know, delia (isn't her name something like that? coulda been kinda friendly in her younger days if you get my drift. i see her dating giovanni around the time as well (ooh love triangle!) she might not be sure who the dad is entirely, so why would ash know? i kinda get the feeling oak knows to degree though. delia might have figured it out after a while, but hey, let ash find out on his own. besides he's never home and these are the kinda things you gotta sit a kid down for.

Delia (yes, that is her name) actually did date Giovanni! It was said so in Pokemon Sunday which, of course, is only in Japan!

I personally believe Giovanni is Ash's father. It really creates that ironic Darth Vader-Luke Skywalker scenario.

If/When Pokemon has a FINAL episode, Ash should have a Pokemon battle, 6-on-6 against Giovanni after finding out he's not only his father, but also the head of Team Rocket. (Ash: NOOOOOO!!!) Brock, Misty, Dawn, May, Tracey, Delia, Gary, and Prof. Oak (pretty much every major character, lol) are all watching. Maybe even a rep from the Pokemon League in disguise, so when Ash defeats Giovanni, he'll be invited to join the Elite Four Five. XD

Not that I mind... but maybe there's one of your reasons why Giovanni is the "true" father for Silver in the PokeSpe and even the games, so people would drive away from the theory of Giovanni being Ash's dad. ;x

If you ask me, there should be the crazy theory where Ho-Oh is Ash's father... *flees*

Lessee, how many crazy things can I dig up...

a) Professor Oak is Ash's father. It would explain why he's always around Ash's mom (anime).
b) Ash's father is Giovanni (that one musical whose name escapes me).
c) Ash's father is Ho-oh (I dunno wth happened with this one).
d) Dawn is Ash's father (blame TVTropes).
e) Ash's father is Lugia (same as above).
f) Sir Aaron is Ash's father (time travel was involved).
g) Ash is his own father (wut).

I like the Ho-oh idea, because "It will reveal itself before a pure-hearted trainer." maybe it just made one.
It is also a possiblity that Sir Aaron is like Ash's great, great, great, grandfather. (Yeah, that many greats.)

I have no idea who might be his father. There wasn't much mention of him, and Ash never talks about him. I'm thinking that Ash's father is either dead, or still out there trying to become a "Pokemon Master" or something. I'm pretty sure that Giovanni is "not" Ash's father. If you don't remember, Ash is kinda...um..not smart? Giovanni is very intelligent. Ash also looks nothing like him.

I found this on another site, but I don't know if it is true...

"Ash's mom said that Giovanni was her boyfriend as a teenager, which she specifically said was before she met Ash's dad."

Dunno if this is important but I might as well put it.

"There was a book released by the main writer for Pokemon (Takeshi Shudo) back in 1999 called "Pocket Monsters: The Animation". Basically, there's a chapter where Satoshi (Ash) is five-years-old, and his mom is tucking him in bed, and reminessing about his father/her ex-husband.

Satoshi's mom, Hanako (Delia?), and her mom, owned an inn in Masara (Pallet) Town where wandering trainers would come and rest. One day, a wanderer, a star trainer, came in, and grew fond of Hanako, and she grew fond of him. At the time, they were both eighteen. Anyways, eventually, they got married, and she got pregnant with Satoshi. When Satoshi was born, he left her.

Hanako then explained to Satoshi that his grandfather (his father's father) was also a star trainer, and Satoshi then fell asleep. She then said to herself that she knows one day Satoshi would leave her, because it's in his blood -- and he did, five years later."
