DESIGN EGG-STRAVAGANZA

Art by Volmise

Hold on to your hatch! We're eggs-tatic to announce an eggs-tremely eggs-iting event!
Yes, you may have guessed it by now - we'll be holding an egg design contest this month.

Take the egg template, decorate it using some kind of art program (be it software or browser-based) and submit the finished product! After the submissions have closed (on the 17th of July), we'll be holding several rounds of voting and everybody will receive prizes based on how many rounds of voting they made it past.

This is the egg sprite template.
It's the base for the designs.

Rules:http://gpx.plus/contest
Submissions will close on the 17th of July.

So just give it a try, have fun! All accepted entries will receive a prize.
We're looking forward to your eggs-elent designs and egging cheering you on from the sidelines.
(okay I'll stop using egg jokes now lol)

Please see Zerxer's post below this one for any updates.

Everyone will have a chance to enter before July 17th. There's nothing special for users who submit first, so please don't rush to submit your entry if you don't have to.

Also, DO NOT post your egg anywhere on the forum or elsewhere in public. Letting others know which entry is yours is a fast way to get disqualified.

Good luck everyone!

Nice! An egg design. Just what I'm great at. J/K. I'll have to see if I can entice my youngest back and have her enter one. Not sure if we have the right internet settings to be so creative, but if anyone in the family can do it.. I'm sure she could! Not sure if I will enter because... yeah. My art is with words. Not pictures. So I'm looking forward to seeing the artistic side of everyone on the site. Even the ones that don't get though the first rounds, in my opinion, are usually quite good. GPX just knows so many Pokemon inspired good artists!

Good luck to you all. I'm looking forward to seeing your entries!

Posted by: CrazyUmbreonLady Jul 4 2016, 12:32 AM

I've made my submission. Hopefully it gets through the first round. This is my first egg design contest, so I'm excited to show off my top-notch MSP sprite editing skills! And I bet the other submissions will be great too.

Posted by: Darth Krytie Jul 4 2016, 12:58 AM

Look at all those puns. happy.gif Good luck everyone! I hope y'all enjoy the event.

Posted by: Kazz Jul 4 2016, 01:14 AM

Hmm, since we have until the 17th maybe I'll enter. Can't remember if I entered the last one. Now to think of ideas.

Posted by: InsaneMoments Jul 4 2016, 01:27 AM

Ooo Ill have to do this before i leave town!

I have a few ideas in mind already grin.gif

Posted by: x Sam Jul 4 2016, 01:33 AM

I guess I know what I'll be doing tomorrow happy.gif Got a decent base going, just need to tidy things up in the next week or so.

e: nvm

Posted by: Alicat Jul 4 2016, 02:10 AM

SO PSYCHED!! crazy.gif I remember the first egg design contest aaaages ago! And I just got back into the swing of spriting so YAY!

Posted by: Kazz Jul 4 2016, 02:39 AM

Went ahead and worked on mine and submitted. I'm pretty proud of it as I'm not the best spriter but I've learned a thing or two from people here. Can't wait to see all the other entries.

Posted by: Gigadweeb Jul 4 2016, 03:39 AM

Can we get a short description field, please? Just so we can get context on people's entries? I like to see the thought process behind people's creations.

Posted by: MewJewel Jul 4 2016, 04:10 AM

Sounds amazing but I'm not that good at art despite getting a B on my art GCSE.

The eggs designed in the last contest were brilliant and very detailed, my would just be crude noes.gif

Posted by: Bobdapeach Jul 4 2016, 04:21 AM

I was thinking about this a few months ago and had lots of ideas had it ever come back, but considering how dead the site is now I never thought it'd happen again, and now I can't remember any of my ideas LOL.

Tho I do have an idea or two I thought up of when I saw this thread, so hopefully I can make something swaggy. Art isn't really my forte at all so pray 4 me,

Posted by: Luneon Jul 4 2016, 05:41 AM

Sounds fun grin.gif and I'm glad to see another egg contest ^^ been a long while since we last had one!

But I'm not quite sure yet what type of egg I'd like to do... especially with there being so many talented people out there haha
if I get around to it, though, I'll do my best to submit one

Some MSP Tips (click to show)

Anyways, I want to put that out there for newbies as someone who have been using MSP for spriting for a good while. It's not the most extravagant, but it's a good tool if you know how to use it.

Can't wait to see everyone's designs. This will be a fun event for sure!

Posted by: Cycloneblaze Jul 4 2016, 09:04 AM

Well this is sure a surprise! Time to try my hand at some spriting again, I suppose.

Posted by: Siyaa Jul 4 2016, 10:17 AM

Oo, sounds like fun! I can't wait to see all the cool designs people come up with! Maybe I'll even try my hand at one.

Ditto. It's really well done. There are a lot of great artists on gpx.

Posted by: AregularFrankiefan Jul 4 2016, 06:03 PM

I was thinking of entering at first, but then I remembered that I'm horrible at spriting and such. So, my design probably wouldn't look too fancy.

So I'm just gonna sit back and watch for this one.

Posted by: Shadow Suicune Jul 4 2016, 06:42 PM

I've wanted to do this ever since I first joined! I never actually did the 2011 events since I was new, but they looked fun. Anyways, why is there a color limit? I made a really pretty design, but it had 500 or so different colors, so I had to go back and cut down on the stuff I did, so it doesn't look AS good (but I still think it looks pretty good grin.gif)

Looking at the first egg design contest, I'm feeling slightly intimidated. MSP works down to the pixel, but apparently the entries in the last one were able to work down beyond the pixel. I'm not letting this discourage me, though! Still, I wonder what kind of programs were they using to be able to put in that much detail. hmm.gif

I'm not sure what others use, but Paint.NET is really good. I've always used it for spriting and I used it for my egg, too. My sig has some example of sprites I've made with it for reference. happy.gif
but I have no idea what you mean by "beyond the pixel"

But I agree with those saying you guys should join even if your not all that artsy. I'm sure it'll be fun to design one anyways. grin.gif

Posted by: CrazyUmbreonLady Jul 5 2016, 12:54 AM

I meant any measurements that are smaller than the standard pixel, assuming those are a thing. IDK if millipixels or micropixels actually exists. But there's more detail on some of the eggs than going pixel by pixel, that's for sure.

Nope, pixels are physically the smallest possible measurement manipulable by a computer, I believe.

Sorry to be a noob but I just wanted to ask: are we designing eggs to look like certain new pokemon, or just designing them however we'd like?
Also could I possibly get a link to the last egg design contest, if anyone would be so kind? I can't spot it haha

Nope, it doesn't have to be based on a Pokémon, or in the Pokémon universe.
The past egg coloring contest can be found http://gpx.plus/easter-contest We look forward to seeing your design! happy.gif

Some just look like that because of the colours used happy.gif looks like a nice blend going on etc. Some may have used an art program though, I'm unsure!

I'm using SAI for mine (as I don't have any other)

Well, most people probably use GIMP or Paint.NET or something to sprite rather than Paint, but nothing more fancy than that. But it's impossible to work with anything smaller than one pixel, that's not a thing. They were able to use so much detail by blending colours together and that sorta thing - I don't know how much of that you can do with only 64 colours though.

Posted by: The Wolfster Jul 5 2016, 04:53 PM

Just 2 questions:

1)Does the mode have to be RGB?

2)Is 64 the max or minimum colour?

Posted by: CrazyUmbreonLady Jul 5 2016, 05:01 PM

I believe 64 colors is the maximum. That's quite a bit of leg-room, actually. As for RGB, I don't know.

Ovi-r here, I'm wishing the best of luck to everyone!
This seems fun, I'm already eggs-tastic over this. I already submitted my entry, just waiting for it to get egg-cepted.
...These egg puns are so eggs-ellently cheesy, I could make a tasty omelette with them.

Posted by: Tiamat Jul 5 2016, 09:26 PM

Ahhhhh, probably a dumb question, but is there anything we can do if we've accidentally submitted the wrong image or are we up a creek if that happens?

Posted by: timeerkat Jul 5 2016, 10:34 PM

Good luck to all! I look forward to being absolutely blown away again like last time! I'm amazed at the skill that this community has!

I entered the one I made today, as I don't think I can get it much better (I lack both the skills of an artist and the patience to go pixel by pixel for very long). I used Paint, and while it's not the most detailed design, and probably won't make it much past round 1 or 2, I'm fairly happy with how it came out. I think it's an improvement over my submission from the last egg contest (a Hostess chocolate cupcake with the white swirls, because I had no inspiration and could whip it up last minute before the submission deadline), so I'm proud of it no matter how it places.

Plus, the fact that anyone who enters gets some kind of prize was a nice motivation to enter regardless! cat.gif

This! The artistic abilities of some are really astounding, especially from the previous art contests! I can't believe it's been this long since we had an egg design one too oh.gif

The best I've come in an art contest was in the Kite design - I made the rose bush flower thing which I think stopped in round 3 or 4 - I think it was 3rd place idk xp

Hopefully I'll do okay with this providing my design is okay!

Rules:
  • Don't distort the shape of the egg too much.
If it barely looks like an egg any longer or the base of the template isn't very noticeable, your submission is likely to be denied.
  • You must stay within the 30x31 pixel dimensions of the image. Using the blank space around the egg is fine.
  • One entry per user.
  • Make sure the image is saved in .PNG format. Use http://www.ezimba.com/index-ln.html if you're having trouble.
  • Your entry must use no more than 64 colours. You can check by uploading your egg to http://www.ezimba.com/index-ln.html.
  • You may not simply (shrink/)paste other already-created images/sprites onto the template.
  • Don't reveal which entry is yours or go around asking for votes. Doing so will lead to disqualification.
  • Though not a rule, making the background of your egg transparent is a good idea. http://www.ezimba.com/index-ln.html could help you with that, if you don't know how to.
http://gpx.plus/contest
Submissions will close on the 17th of July.

So just give it a try, have fun! All accepted entries will receive a prize.
We're looking forward to your eggs-elent designs and egging cheering you on from the sidelines.
(okay I'll stop using egg jokes now lol)

I couldn't enter it even though it was the right size, file type, AND under 64 colors!

Posted by: Gajeel Redfox Jul 14 2016, 09:11 PM

I submitted my egg design on Tuesday and was happy to see when I checked a lil bit ago it was accepted. Honestly my spriting skills are rusty to say the least. I doubt I'll get far, though it's nice to know anyone will get a prize for entering. I remember many years ago I was planning to do an egg design and never did it. Honestly thinking of ideas can be such a pain...I still have some element-bent Pokemon designs I want to work on...namely of the second generation starters.

That being said I look forward to seeing the submissions and thank you to whoever accepted my entry. The worst part is that I normally don't have patience for things but spiriting I've always had patience for...or well more patience. Funnily...I think my color count was like...19. But then I've done spiriting for at least a decade so...it's easier to keep the count low and still look good.

EDIT: Looking over the last few pages, I wanted to add that I use Photoshop myself since I can make the egg transparent as well as keep layers for the edits I'm doing. For example I kept the very original base first, then the base colors I was using, then each additional part I added...and of course a layer to keep track of all the colors I need or may use. I was going to try for an actual Pokemon but decided to leave that for another time and just do something non-Pokemon. Would of been cool to do an egg for the new 7th Gen starters though. TEAM LITTEN!

Posted by: Gryphaena Jul 16 2016, 05:09 AM

My Paint skills are quite sub-par, I think I prefer Dress-Up Contests. xD

Posted by: Manah Jul 16 2016, 04:04 PM

I'm not entirely happy with the less-than-64-colors version of my egg, but at least I managed to make something that doesn't look completely weird. xD

Posted by: Cycloneblaze Jul 16 2016, 05:43 PM

Got my egg in just there. I had to change my idea a couple times, but I ended up making something I'm happy with happy.gif It wasn't too hard to get it under 64 colours either, although I was a bit surprised that it did go over. I just really hope it gets accepted now! I'll show it (and a couple beta designs) off when it gets knocked out.

Posted by: Gajeel Redfox Jul 16 2016, 07:25 PM

I'm surprised at how many people had trouble staying under 64 colors. I can't even fathom why you really need too many either. I find it best to use at most 5 shades of a single color. Still I can't wait to see the eggs people have made.

I'm surprised at how many people had trouble staying under 64 colors. I can't even fathom why you really need too many either. I find it best to use at most 5 shades of a single color. Still I can't wait to see the eggs people have made.

Hm I know a lot of people use other brushes than the default pencil in ms paint so I think their brush just affects the surrounding pixels as well and slightly changes their shade.

Or if you make your egg template 500% and then use the zoom in to get it 800%
cause I guess for some things it can be useful to have a giant template
but then when you make it small again, you can get a LOT of extra accidental color which you then have to remove/fix

I use that trick (first resizing to max, then back to original when I'm done) when I edit and/or make textures in Painttool Sai for 3D models that some of my fb friends like to make/edit
For spriting contests like these it's really inconvenient at times so I don't recommend it.
Especially not if you're in a hurry because you may forget to reduce colors.

Trying to make a design I'm happy with is seriously so hard... xD I've actually pixelated only a handful of my ideas and I just KNOW I'm going to submit it right before the deadline

Edit: Well... after spending five hours tonight making two more eggs, decided to go with the one I made last night after all xD I hope it does okay

Posted by: pumpkinking0192 Jul 17 2016, 11:50 AM

I made my egg transparent, but the site linked in the OP made it a gif instead of a png, so I went back into Paint and saved the transparent gif as a png. I didn't realize until I'd submitted that Paint changed the transparency into a solid black background, so I'm glad whoever's sorting through submissions allowed me to resubmit. I ended up just submitting the white-background version from before I tried to make it transparent, and it looks fine on the contest page's white background. happy.gif

Mine got approved this morning. My skills suck lol but had to have a go :p

We'll be extending submissions through at least Wednesday, to allow more time for new submissions as well as resubmits of denied ones... and also possibly because I don't have the time tonight to get the polls up anyway. happy.gif

Literally just read this. oTL I accidentally submitted a revised version two minutes ago that didn't have a transparent background. Would I be able to fix that?

Yup, don't worry, we've been catching submissions that don't have a transparent or white background (transparent definitely preferred, if only so the white doesn't negatively sway voters later). Feel free to resubmit.

Could we get an update on the main GPX page (where it says Design Egg-Stravaganza) as well as the first page/post? Many people probably don't know since the update is only on this page and it may help get some people to actually submit an egg if they have an extra 2 days happy.gif!

Posted by: Kazz Jul 18 2016, 09:39 PM

I asked on FB but gonna ask here as well for visibility. Are we allowed to resubmit if we've made a slight edit to what was already submitted? Or is this just for people who didn't submit or submitted w/o transparent backgrounds?

Just got an answer.

Posted by: Gryphaena Jul 20 2016, 09:19 AM

Judging by other artsy contests the site has had, the entries will be awesome! :]

Posted by: Rua Jul 20 2016, 10:41 AM

I'm so antsy to see if my new one will be accepted! I'm actually kind of glad the one from Sunday was rejected - I think the tinkering to fix it for resubmission actually improved it in the long run. Is the deadline still tonight?

Posted by: Zerxer Jul 20 2016, 07:26 PM

Submissions will be closing tonight, but not precisely at reset (we'll be out until later).

However, I'm going to allow resubmits of denied entries until Thursday night, and then the polls will be up at some point on Friday (possibly after reset Thursday). The page will just be closed to new submissions after tonight.

Can't wait though!

Voting has begun! http://forums.gpx.plus/index.php?showforum=157

These first ten polls, with 21 entries each, and 5 votes allowed per poll, will be up until Tuesday night.

Top 10 per poll will move on.

Posted by: Gajeel Redfox Jul 23 2016, 12:55 AM

There were some good and some not so good entries from what I saw. But good luck everyone!

WOWZERS!

I just visited the polls and (dare I say it? I dare! I dare!) We have very talented artists here at GPX and far better candidates than the US Presidential election! omg.gif There was a lot of tough choices to make and I can see how many really put some thought behind their designs. Kudos to all of you!

Round 2 voting has begun! http://forums.gpx.plus/index.php?showforum=157

There are five polls with 20 entries each, and 5 votes are allowed per poll again. These will be up until Friday night, three full days.

Again, the top ten per poll will move on.

If you lost in Round 1, the http://gpx.plus/contest will say so at the top. If you're still in the running, it will tell you which thread your entry is in.

Good luck!

Posted by: Gajeel Redfox Jul 27 2016, 08:05 AM

I was surprised I made it into Round 2. Anyway good luck to those who made it into Round 2.

Congratulations to those who made it into round 2!

Are we allowed to talk about our egg if we're out of the contest?

Posted by: Gajeel Redfox Jul 27 2016, 12:29 PM

Pretty sure you can if you're already out...though I wanted to ask. How many rounds are there in total?

Yes, you may post if you're already out. Some have already done so in the community thread, and someone else has posted a separate thread in the GPX Discussion section for eliminated eggs.

I won't lie, the number of rounds is not yet decided. I am deciding round info as new rounds begin. There will most likely be 2-3 more rounds, don't see a reason for more than that. But we'll see!

Posted by: Lodrelhai Jul 27 2016, 08:59 PM

Some gorgeous eggs in the contest! Mine didn't make it to round 2, but I didn't expect it to really. Spriting details is a lot harder than it looks, and just trying makes me even more impressed with the entries that actually made it. Hats off to everyone, and good luck!

Posted by: Gajeel Redfox Jul 29 2016, 09:28 PM

I agree with Lodre. Also Zerxer, I was looking at previous contests and just wanted to know what number of entries making it into the 1st to 7th place? Is it like the top 50 eggs?

Posted by: x Sam Jul 30 2016, 02:21 AM

Can't wait for the next round oh.gif

Posted by: Zerxer Jul 30 2016, 04:37 AM

Quarterfinal (round 3) voting has begun! http://forums.gpx.plus/index.php?showforum=157

There are five polls with 10 entries each, and this time you may only vote for 3 per poll. These will be up until Monday night, three full days.

Only the top 4 from each poll will move on. There are only two more rounds after this one; round 5 will be the finals.

If you lost in a previous round, the http://gpx.plus/contest will say so at the top. If you're still in the running, it will tell you which thread your entry is in.

Good luck!

Posted by: Kazuchan Jul 30 2016, 02:18 PM

I just want to thank all people who voted for my egg.

It didnt make it to the 3rd round but I wasn't expecting it to. Actually I was baffled and surprised it made it to round 2. I made it with normal Paint in like 3 minutes, I have no clue how to make the background transparent (I think in Paint you can't) and it was my first ever sprite I have done to any contest or anything.
There were/are so many brilliant works in the contest I thought my egg wouldnt stand a chance. So again, thank you everyone who voted on it. happy.gif

This is the egg

Semifinal (round 4) voting has begun! http://forums.gpx.plus/index.php?showforum=157

There are four polls with 5 entries each, and this time you may only vote for 1 per poll. These will be up until Thursday night, three full days.

Only the top 2 from each poll will move on to the finals.

If you lost in a previous round, the http://gpx.plus/contest will say so at the top. If you're still in the running, it will tell you which thread your entry is in.

Good luck!

Posted by: Gajeel Redfox Aug 2 2016, 07:09 AM

I feel you Kazuchan, I was surprised I made it to round 3. What's even more surprising is I was so close to making it to round 4 as well. Ah well. Pretty sure I know whose going to win though.

Posted by: Faerydae Aug 2 2016, 05:13 PM

The final round is upon us! http://forums.gpx.plus/index.php?showtopic=74218

There is a single poll with the top 8 entries, and this time you may of course only vote for 1 entry. This poll will be up until Sunday night, three full days.

Information about prizes will be revealed later.

If you lost in a previous round, the http://gpx.plus/contest will say so at the top. If you're still in the running, it will tell you which thread your entry is in.

Good luck to the top 8!

Well I made it to the finals! Good luck everyone left in the running. So far, looks like I'm on for a good top 5 finish happy.gif

Posted by: General Ironwood Aug 5 2016, 05:09 AM

Well, when I went to bed I was eight votes short of the final, but alas, good things can't last forever! I was honoured to have made it as far as I did, considering I haven't sprited for quite some time and I threw up my egg in photoshop without so much as a theme. All I knew was I wanted it to be on fire, then I pixelled in the mountains afterwards.

Posted by: Luxrayx Aug 5 2016, 05:25 AM

Oh General Ironwood, your egg is lovely! I'm honestly surprised it didn't make it to the final.

This is the egg I made, I based it on Norwegian rosemaling, which is kind of my favorite thing ever... Maybe I would've gotten farther by making something more recognizable tongue.gif
I also wish I'd done more with the shading and such, but oh well. Making it to round three is still an ego boost for me ^^

I'm honored that one of the staff actually liked mine. Especially since like one of the previous posters it was something I threw into Photoshop except that it was of course based on Grant Gustin's Flash costume. Had several egg ideas since the contest started that I might just throw together and post in the creative section. Anyway congrats to everyone who made it to the finals.

The contest is now over! Prizes will be handled later this week when I have more time, but for now...

Congratulations again to our final 8!

Coming in 1st is Sleeppari's design;
sharing 2nd place are designs by Rua and Aether;
and the remaining 5, sharing 3rd place, are designs by irisidium, Lovelybones0, Bonnie Clyde, Lhancat, and Sam.

All 8 of these, as well as the remaining entries, can be seen in their placements here: http://gpx.plus/design-eggstravaganza-contest

Note that they are not sorted by the number of votes received in each round.

Posted by: Gigadweeb Aug 8 2016, 01:01 AM

on a sidenote, is there any way we could get one of these events more than once a year? I love seeing the community's creativity come out, and it'd help keep the site alive a bit

This was my design happy.gif thank you for everyone who voted for it. I haven't sprited in a long long time and getting back into art, so I'm really happy with how far it had gone. Concept based off Fabergé Eggs happy.gif

Congratulations to Sleeppari, Rua, Aether and the rest of the finalists

Posted by: Lodrelhai Aug 8 2016, 05:14 AM

Congrats everyone! That last round was tough, several of the eggs had been top picks of mine for the entire contest.

Posted by: Mamanator Aug 8 2016, 09:17 AM

Congratulations to all of those who tried their creative hands and went from one round to the next! Those were incredible designs and you should all be proud of what you had done!

Kudos to all of those in the Top 3! I am happy to say that I had supported ALL of those designs at one time or another (obviously, sometimes, more than once LOL).

I've said it before and I'll say it again. GPX+ has awesome membership whose talent is incredible! And for those that didn't advance past the first round - I hope you know that you still did something worth bragging about. Some of us (cough *me* cough) didn't even try, but you all did. That's awesome!! I hope you pat yourselves on the back for your efforts and continue to work on them for the next time (as, I'm sure, there will be a next time).

Definitely pumped to hear about the prizes.

Posted by: Luxrayx Aug 8 2016, 09:47 AM

Congratulations everyone on your talent! I hope we can do this more often ^^
I'm happy to see who won... To be honest, I'd been rooting for that one from the beginning, though I've kind of been rooting for everyone tongue.gif
