Global PokédeX Plus Forums _ GPXPlus Discussion _ Do you nickname your shinies?

Posted by: Shadow Suicune Jun 7 2015, 01:26 PM

Do any of you ever nickname your shinies? I always name mine because to me, naming them helps me feel like I have a closer connection to them. I name some of mine after deceased pets, and some I name whatever they remind me of. For example, I named my Furfrou and Mightyena George and Tula Belle, respectively. I also named my Meowstic Missy, because that's who she reminded me of.

Sometimes. Team shinies always get the names they had in the games, some are named after other characters, and some just get whatever name I can think of. happy.gif

I nickname some of my shinies. Sometimes they're references to games/shows like Chelsea (Heatran), Episode (Lopunny), and the Florges line, and others are nicknamed after friends (also my Stoutland is named after my dog). And then there's the ones that I come up with on the spot.

Posted by: Takahashi Jun 7 2015, 01:39 PM

I nickname all of mine, they used to be named after Characters from Dangan Ronpa, but recently I've just been asking people around me what to name them and do that. Or they're just something I come up with, like Hobbitchan (Primeape).

Shinies are pretty much the only pokémon to get names :P (though I still need a name for the white Florges (F) and the Togekiss (M)).

The origins of their names vary widely though. The Eeveelutions will be getting names from Norse gods (got Thor and Aegir so far), then I've got some obvious ones (Cotton Candy the Ampharos, Manny the Mamoswine, Paraffin the Chandelure), a few from LoL (Ahri the Ninetails and Infinity Edge the Aegislash), a couple of uninspired ones (Bravery the Braviary, Yahn the Yanmega and Zan the Zangoose come to mind) and a few bases on video game/book characters (Sandor the Aracanine, Elena & Erril the Gardevoir & Gallade).

I nickname all of my shinnies. happy.gif

Where their names come from varies, some I get it from video game characters, what the Pokemon makes me think of, or something random that may or may not even fit the Pokemon.

My shinnies and their nicknames (click to show)

I'm wanting to get shiny Florges of all colors and name them after video game princess characters that have hair color similar to the Florges' "hair":
Blue - Blaze the cat from Sonic the Hedgehog (even though she's purple, but blue is close enough)
White - Rosalina from Mario
Yellow - Peach from Mario
Orange - Daisy from Mario (her hair is brown, but she wears orange)
Red - Zelda from The Legend of Zelda (she had red hair once)

I also want a shiny Chimchar name Chimichanga. konata.gif

I nickname all my shinies. And all my novelties and legenadaries (that aren't duplicates), and plenty of my other Pokémon too. I'm a creative guy and I like to think of names for them all grin.gif

A lot of mine have nicknames, but I haven't been doing them much lately. I should think of some, especially for my 6th gen shinies.

Posted by: Gambrinous Antiscian Jun 7 2015, 03:29 PM

The vast majority of my Shinies have no nicknames, simply because I rarely have a name in mind for them when they do finally hatch. I will get around to naming them all at some point; probably not any time soon though.

i name shinies after my friends and associates

Posted by: Crobat Jun 7 2015, 03:35 PM

I always try to name my shinies as best I can.

Like shiny slugma in X. He's called Mercury grin.gif

Posted by: Synx Itax Jun 7 2015, 03:43 PM

I used to nickname my shinies, but I stopped after filling entirely too many boxes with them. Nowadays, I only name them if I feel like they deserve one; for instance, if a hunt takes a really long time, I might name a shiny to reflect that. If it's a Pokémon I really like, that may be another shiny that I name. When I named them, I'd usually pick celestial objects or just pretty words (Arcturus, Halcyon, etc).

Posted by: Draknir Jun 7 2015, 05:31 PM

I name all of my Shinies. Surprisingly I haven't run out of names yet. Of course, there's no guarantee I'll keep doing so in the future.

Posted by: Daneh Jun 7 2015, 10:28 PM

I only name my shinies if I dress them up. And the names usually match the theme I dress them up as.

Posted by: The Majestic Mr L Jun 7 2015, 10:34 PM

Well, I try to. Mostly I do, but if I can't come up with a name then I just leave it blank. Typically I name them after characters in video games or TV shows, but every now and then there's one that has a name I just come up with.

I need to think of more nicknames for mine. Lately I've turned to genus names.

Taxonomy words sound interesting to me. Plus I liked the Biology I took.

Posted by: Cajun Jun 8 2015, 01:55 AM

If I don't have a nickname picked out I'll make one on the spot, so they're all nicked. That tends to go both ways, Goojira the Goodra and Redcap the Cranidos were good off-the-cuff, then I've got guys like James Franco and Snten.

Posted by: PokeNOM NOM NOM Jun 8 2015, 08:20 AM

Yes, I always name my shinies.
As for what kind of names I give them... could be anything really.
But I do like doing some research - I'll name them after creatures from mythology, Greek gods, plants.
I sometimes use words that sound lyrical from other languages that seem to suit the particular Pokémon.

...or sometimes I just name my Pokémon the first random name that comes to mind. x3

Posted by: Spades Slick Jun 8 2015, 08:50 AM

I either number them - because I'm strangely obsessive about keeping them in order for the time being - or give them stupid fandom nicknames, but yeah, they're all named in some way or another.

Posted by: Kitten Jun 8 2015, 01:45 PM

I do yes, if I have one planned.

Posted by: Durppie Jun 22 2015, 12:32 PM

If I plan on keeping any Pokemon, they get a name. Shinies are definitely keepers. happy.gif

Posted by: Wastelander Jun 22 2015, 06:57 PM

I nickname most of the shinies I hatch on GPX+. Usually I give them random names, though sometines I'll name them after video game characters or songs.

Posted by: Spoovo The Pirate Jun 26 2015, 07:22 PM

I make it a thing to nickname my shinies. Even if the nicknames are awful, every shiny gets one. Though I try to go for puns. cat.gif

Posted by: Easley Jun 27 2015, 03:45 AM

Me too! I always give my shinies a name. Usually I name it based on events that relate to its birthday or any event around me that's in. XD

Posted by: Lucca Majere Jun 27 2015, 08:45 AM

I nickname all my shinies and all of the pokemon I've determined to keep in general, actually.

I used to name every single pokemon I got on site, but as you can imagine, that stopped before too long LOL.

As for a theme, the vast majority of my shinies have Homestuck names.

Posted by: Cycrum Jul 29 2015, 03:06 PM

I do nickname my shinies. Usually, I either nickname my shinies something random on the spot, something related with what the Pokemon is based off of, or after a character from a video game or television or web series.

I always nickname my shinies. Usually after the predominant color. And I'll use foreign language words for colors as well.

Indigo, male Zoroark: English
Fuchsia, female Ariados: English
Aquamarine, male Ludicolo: English
Lila, female Lapras: French(?) for lilac
Blau, male Zangoose: I... honestly don't remember what language, but it's supposed to be the word for blue.
Lapis, female Reuniclus: English
Aqua, male Feraligatr: English
Cinnamon, male Vespiquen: English
Whyte, male Winter Vulpix: corrupted English
Lavender, male Kingdra: English
Midori, male Serperior: Japanese

Then your Black Furfrou is so suave!

YES.

HECK YES.

I name them after a gem of that color, or a gem relating to Steven Universe.

For instance, come Octoberfest, I plan to rename my shiny Dusknoir Garnet because Garnet in Steven Universe is a fusion of a red gem and a blue gem, and Shiny Dusclopes go from red to blue upon evolving.

I also have a shiny Mega Lucario named Topaz, a shiny Psyduck named Sapphire, a shiny Pumpkaboo named Amethyst Star (as in the Unicorn pony), and a shiny Skitty named Ruby (previously the unoriginal Bling).

I nickname most of my Pokemon, not just shinies. Sometimes I have names planned out already, sometimes I just call them whatever springs to mind first.

My nicknames tend to vary in origin, if you haven't guessed. (I mean, I named my shiny Duskull Bill Cipher, my fake Groudon Francis [if I remember correctly], and I'm planning to name my hopefully male shiny Misdreavus after an OC of mine-a stripey, color-changing demon dude named Icaruba.)

Posted by: bufu12 Oct 2 2015, 11:32 PM

I nickname mostly my Shiny Pokemon instead of my normal ones. The Pokemon in my signatures have nicknames: Shiny Ruru (Shiny Gardevoir), Shiny Ryu (Shiny Gallade), Kid Goku (Shiny Lucario), Pollo Campero (Shiny Blaziken), and Pollo Jr. (Shiny Combusken).

It's better for me to nickname shiny Pokemon it seems worth it to name something that you completed from the shiny hunt.

While I give names to most of my pokémon, my shinies have a naming theme: WoW lore characters. Their description also has a paragraph on the character the pokémon is named after happy.gif

Posted by: ShrapnelStars Oct 9 2015, 10:11 PM

I tend to have a theme for each box that I start on. My first box was named after typefaces, and right now I'm doing song titles.

Posted by: Vande Oct 10 2015, 01:47 AM

Sometimes I nick name them, but for most of the time I don't.

Posted by: shadowlarvitar Oct 10 2015, 02:27 AM

I've never nicknamed a Pokemon in my life. On the games or here. I just can't think of anything cool enough to give them

Posted by: Mangepic Oct 10 2015, 04:06 PM

I always nickname my shinies, ususally for a reason, sometimes for no reason at all :P I name pokemon after foods a lot too
I've named a shiny Gyrados shashimi
Duskull named dawn
Ninetales names snowfox
Marshtomp named Muddle (Mud+puddle)
And a moltres named turkey
Also name a few non-shinie, but not as often

Pretty much all of my Shinies are nicknamed in reference to something. You'll have to figure out the three in my sig by yourself.

My Charizard is Kostbar (means precious, as I just snatched a random egg) and my Togetic is Dragonsbane for an obvious reason.

I don't have a shiny yet (joined pretty recently) but I look forward to it! Shinies seem like a lot of effort, and I'll want to name mine because I think I'll feel closer to them, like you said. When I first started playing pokemon (Blue on the Gameboy, way back in the day) I named every single poke! I think I may reuse some of those names (at least the ones I can remember) for nostalgia.
