I use Sandslash (rock smash, rock climb, strength, cut) and Chinchou (surf, waterfall, whirlpool, flash) and I always have a flying type to know fly

Usually my HM slave turns out to be a Pokémon I generally dislike. Or else it ends up being the starter that I picked at the beginning.

It depends for me, I rarely have just one. Marill, Graveler, Rayquaza, Salamence, Sceptile, and Aggron are a few I sometimes use.

Geodude works well for me. When I need cut, I pull out Bidoof. Usually I don't need rock climb and strength at the same time as cut and rock smash.

I actually have two HM slaves. Staryu (waterfall, surf, whirlpool) and Ryhorn (rock smash, strength, rock slide). They're pretty helpful in battle too though amazingly. I thought they'd be terrible and useless but apparently not.

 aurmarill surf waterfall rocksmash and strength (empoleon knows cut and rockclimb) while chatot knows fly and defog

Huh, I've never really been one to use HM slaves much really...
 In my current HeartGold team I have a Pikachu with Surf and Strength which I caught on the PokeWalker, a Gyrados from Lake of Rage with Waterfall, a Tentacruel with Whirlpool and Cut, a Kangaskhan with Rock Smash and a Pidgeot with Fly. The only one left is my lv.37 Cyndaquil which doesn't know any HM moves. I even EV trained some of those in the team too, in fact Pikachu, Gyrados and Tentacruel are probably the strongest Pokemon in that team even though they know a lot of HMs  ...

I use the Kangaskhan I caught on th Pokewalker since I got the game for surf, rock climb, strength and rock smash and my Farfetch'd knows fly and cut. My Feraligatr knows Waterfall, as that HM is actually usable.
