Here is a lovely list I've compiled for you all to read. This is to help you debate better and to help you avoid making yourself look like a moron. The thread title will be edited when any additions to this list are made.

---

Know what the debate is actually about.

Kind of hard to debate if you don't know what the debate is actually about. Read through posts in the thread carefully if you aren't sure what is being debated. If you still aren't sure, feel free to ask a question for clarification.

Explain the reasoning behind your opinions.

Please do not just make a post saying "I think x is wrong/right.". Explain why you think so and if possible, provide examples and/or evidence to support your opinion.

Know what you're arguing against.

You will not believe how many times I've seen people argue against something and turn out to have limited to absolutely no knowledge about what they're arguing against. If you're not entirely clear on what you're arguing against, do some proper research to learn more about it. Avoid making yourself look ignorant.

Don't turn a debate into a flame war.

This is one of the biggest things in debates. There's no need to attack the other side with insults instead of actually making a point. Flaming in the debates section can carry hefty warnings, so don't spark one up or join in one. If you see a flame war happening in a debate, report the post or contact a global moderator/admin right away.

Present your arguments nicely.

Use good grammar, spelling and punctuation. You don't have to be perfect, but other people need to be able to know what you're talking about. Posts look much better when they are in nice and orderly paragraphs and lists. It's very important to make sure that you're communicating well in here, otherwise people may misunderstand something you say.

You can leave a debate at any time.

Don't feel you have to keep dragging something on. If you want to stop debating in a thread, just leave the thread or post in it stating that you're not going to debate any longer. Just remember to not make a big deal out of it when you're posting that you're stopping a debate.
